• How do I efficiently code both the client and server at the same time?

  I'm coding my game using a client-server model. When playing on singleplayer, the game starts a local server, and interacts with it just like a remote server (multiplayer). I have done this to avoid coding separate singleplayer and multiplayer code. I have just started coding and have encountered a major problem. Currently I'm developing the game in Eclipse, having all the game classes organized into packages. Then, in my server code, I just use all the classes in the client packages. The problem is, these client classes have variables that are specific to rendering, which obviously wouldn't be performed on a server. Should I create modified versions of the client classes to use in the server? Or should I just modify the client classes with a boolean, to indicate if its the client/server using it. Are there any other options I have? I just had a thought about maybe using the server class as the core class, then extending it with rendering stuff?

• Is it time to drop Courier from your monospace font stacks?

  I've been fine-tuning my font stacks lately and was wondering if it's safe to drop Courier from my monospace font stack yet? Would you feel comfortable dropping it? Of course, monospace is my final fallback. Note 1: OS Testbed: WinXP, WinVista, Win7, iPhone, iPad Based on my research, these browsers now substitute Courier New for Courier by default: IE9+ Chrome 2+ Firefox 10+ Safari 3.1+ iDevices Note 2: The default "font-family: monospace;" renders as Courier New in every browser I've tested, from IE6 through the latest iPhone/iPad devices. EDIT: One exception is Opera 12, which renders Consolas on Win. Opera 10 renders Courier New. Note 3: I've noticed that Courier refuses to render with any font smoothing (anti-aliasing) in any browser I've tested, regardless of system and/or browser display settings. Probably because it's an old bitmap font. This could be because of my system setup, however.

  I have a GPS device, and I am receiving continuous points, which I store in an array. These points are time stamped. I would like to graph distance/time (speed) vs. distance in real-time; however, I can only plot 50 of the points because of hardware constraints. How would you select points from the array to graph? For example, one algorithm might be to select every Nth point from the array, where N results in 50 points total. Code: float indexModifier = 1; if (MIN(50,track.lastPointIndex) == 50) { indexModifier = track.lastPointIndex/50.0f; } index = ceil(index*indexModifier); Another algorithm might be to keep an array of 50 points, and throw out the point with the least speed change each time you get a new point.

• How do I merge multiple PDB files ?

  We are currently using a single command line tool to build our product on both Windows and Linux. Si far its works nicely, allowing us to build out of source and with finer dependencies than what any of our previous build system allowed. This buys us great incremental and parallel build capabilities. To describe shortly the build process, we get the usual: .cpp -- cl.exe --> .obj and .pdb multiple .obj and .pdb -- cl.exe --> single .dll .lib .pdb multiple .obj and .pdb -- cl.exe --> single .exe .pdb The msvc C/C++ compiler supports it adequately. Recently the need to build a few static libraries emerged. From what we gathered, the process to build a static library is: multiple .cpp -- cl.exe --> multiple .obj and a single .pdb multiple .obj -- lib.exe --> a single .lib The single .pdb means that cl.exe should only be executed once for all the .cpp sources. This single execution means that we can't parallelize the build for this static library. This is really unfortunate. We investigated a bit further and according to the documentation (and the available command line options): cl.exe does not know how to build static libraries lib.exe does not know how to build .pdb files Does anybody know a way to merge multiple PDB files ? Are we doomed to have slow builds for static libraries ? How do tools like Incredibuild work around this issue ?

• Can I build or test a computer without a case?

  I am in the process of building a really nice new PC right now. It's going to have a nice Lian Li case with the internals powder coated black and all the wires will be sleeved. So my problem is I am getting parts in a couple days but my case will not be completed for about a month because it is on back order plus time to powder coat it. I am purchasing many of m y parts from newegg.com and they claim you must return any dead parts within 30 days or the invoice for there warranty to replace bad parts. So is it possible for me to set up the PC without a case just to test that the main parts are working correctly within the timeframe I am allowed? If this is possible, how do I deal with turning the system on/off without a powere button? Or is therer one on a motherboard? Thanks for any tips/advice

• ClassCleanup in MSTest is static, but the build server uses nunit to run the unit tests. How can i a

  Hi All, MSTest has a [ClassCleanup()] attribute, which needs to be static as far as I can tell. I like to run through after my unit tests have run,and clean up my database. This all works great, however when I go to our build server and use our Nant build script, it seems like the unit tests are run with NUnit. NUnit doesn't seem to like the cleanup method to be static. It therefore ignores my tests in that class. What can I do to remedy this? I prefer to not use [TestCleanUp()] as that is run after each test. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know [TestCleanup()] aids in decoupling, but I really prefer the [ClassCleanup()] in this situation. • apt-get install does not work. Gives the same error every time E: Unable to locate package

  There is an issue, for every package that I try to install. I am using VMWare Player 3.16 & I have installed Ubuntu 12.04. The error is: E:Unable to locate package (PACKAGE NAME) Also, another problem is that there are some configuration errors. So I have to use the CLI rather than the GUI. Now if this is a network error, I'm not sure as to how to open the setting from the command prompt. Even if I get to the GUI, it might not work, as the shortcuts are not available.

• FWBuilder DNS Object Run Time - when exactly does it resolve the DNS name?

  In Firewall Builder, when you use the DNS Object and set it to run time, when exactly does the firewall (iptables in our case) actually resolve the DNS name? Is it whenever a call is made to that DNS name in the firewall? So the firewall would resolve the name on the fly whenever someone/something tries to access that DNS name? Or is it when you execute the fw script to load the rules into iptables? So in this case, it would resolve the DNS name that one time and then hard-code the resulting ip address into the iptable rules? From what I read, I think its #1, but it's just not 100% clear to me. We have two servers for a certain function on our network. One is the primary server and one is backup. alpha0.domain.com alpha1.domain.com In DNS we have this: alpha.domain.com -> alpha0.domain.com If the primary server goes down and we need to switch to the backup, I just change our local DNS record to point to alpha1.domain.com instead. So back to the firewall, if I just put in a Domain Object as alpha.domain.com, do I have to reload the firewall rules every time we switch to the backup alpha server and change the DNS record? Or will the firewall automatically resolve to the correct address even after the switch?

I have a couple of ideas e.g. remembering the key and event generation time so that we could in a consecutive event handler invocation check the time difference between these two events and decide, whether it's a two-button event or not. That means, most people in the team should work on different parts of the system at different times so that everyone has an understanding of it. If you are an expert database admin, what's the point of working on the user interface of the system when you switch pairs? Sure, it could just be that I am noticing it more because I am actively looking out for questions and blog posts, but even in my day to day reading of Code Project Daily News and Stack Overflow questions there seems to be increased activity around the language. So what sparked this post? Well, today today I logged in and saw that the latest podcast by DNR was on F# and then immediately afterwards I received an email from CodeProject with a great article comparing F# and Scala. Currently, as of this blog posting (21 May 2010) F# is ranked on the tiobe site at position 43, but I am willing to put money on it that in the next few tiobe ratings this ranking will continue to rise till F# will be a top 20.

  Im using JAXWS 2.1.7, using some classes to run through JAXWS's 'apt' to generate the WSDL. For dates, I use @XmlSchemaType(name="time") private Date wakeupTime; and this generates a schema with xs:time, but when this all comes out in XML, the value is something like <wakeupTime>1901-01-01T01:00:00 +10</wakeupTime> I want JUST the time portion to come! I think I want to use a custom converter to say that xs:time + java.util.Date should be printed and parsed in such-and-sucha manner, but I cant see that I can pass a bindings file to the apt routine. I can't (for historical & other reasons) use XMLGregorianCalendar - it has to be a java.util.Date. How do I specify a custom binding for the apt tool in jaxb

THe Accepted answer for previous question was: One thing you can do is add a condition to the .csproj or .vbproj file that MSBuild will check when doing a build. The condition would check if a publish is occurring and check if the build is a debug build, then do something like run an external tool or otherwise interrupt the build process or cause it to fail. • Is there an easy way of obtaining the total page response time in ASP.Net?

  Hello, commonly on say PHP or other web frameworks getting the total response time is easy, just start the timer at the top of the file and stop it at the end. In ASP.Net there is the whole Page Lifecycle bit though so I'm not sure how to do this. I would like for this response time recording to take place in a master page and the response time show up in the footer of pages. What would be the best way of doing this? Is there something built in to ASP.Net for it? Is it even possible to include the OnRender time?

• Technique to Display Multiple Browser Windows Tiled at Same time?

  I have a separate monitor that I use for Toodledo (a web-based task managment app), in which I like to display various views (Next Action Status, Waiting Status, Planning Status, and Overdue Due-Date items). I've been playing around with some add-ons on Firefox that allow you to split the browser, but they are cumbersome. I'm now trying Chrome, and opening 4 different browser windows that I've tiled on the screen in quadrants (I use the Compiz grid applet for this). This is not ideal as each browser replicates the URL bar and the tab, and I don't have opening ths windows automated upon restart. Chrome is great in managing screen real estate, but this is not ideal. In Firefox I tried various extension to hide interface elements, but it was very clunky... Am wondering whether anyyone has tried to do similar with TD, and how they achieved what I'm going after? Am wondering whether someone has a good technique for accomplishing what I'm looking for?

• Dockable panes created in CChildFrame not visible the second time the app. starts.

  Hi, I have created some dockable panes in CChildFrame::OnCreate() The first time i start the application they are shown. The second time i start the application they are created but the splitterwindows are completly against the sides of the clients area (bottom and right), so not visible. So i have to use the mouse to pull the splitters into the clientarea so that the dockable windows become visible again. If i do File-New in my app a new client window is created and showing the dockable windows as they should be. I Think this has something to do with saving the windows layout in the registry, because if i change SetRegistryKey(_T("61sakjgsajkdg")); in the CWinApp derived class of my app. and rerun they are shown again the first time. (but not the second time i restart the app). How can i save the layout of those dockable windows as well, so if i restart my app. they are visible ? Or else how do i prevent my app. of overwritting the window layout with the one previously saved. Something to do with LoadCustomState() and SaveCustomState() ?, i could no find any info on howto implement those methods. • Safely convert UTC datetimes to local time (based on TZ) for calculations?

  Following from my last question which @Jon Skeet gave me a lot of help with (thanks again!) I am now wondering how I can safely work with date/times, stored as UTC, when they are converted back to Local Date/Time. As Jon indicated in my last question using DateTimeOffset represents an instant in time and there is no way to predict what the local time would be say a minute later. I need to be able to do calculations based on these date/times. So how can I assure when I pull the dates from the database, convert them to local date/time and do specific calculations on them they are going to be accurate?
