• Adopt a Java EE 7 JSR!

  Broad community participation is key to the success of any technology worth it's salt. The Adopt-a-JSR program was launched in recognition of this fact. It is an initiative by some key JUG leaders around the World to encourage JUG members to get involved in a JSR and to evangelize that JSR to their JUG and the wider Java community, in order to increase grass roots participation. There are a number of JUGs that have already jumped in like the Chennai JUG, SouJava, London Java Community, BeJUG, GoJava, Morrocco JUG, Campinas JUG and ItpJava. Note that any developer can participate, there isn't a need to be a JUG leader.   Sorry if I am asking a trivial question but I have been searching for a while without any luck. I need to design a system and I am looking for advice on the technology that should be used. The layout is very simple: it is a sales application with a centralized database and multiple clients. Each salesperson has GUI app installed on his/her laptop that should be able to connect to the database to retrieve data and upload data (i.e. register new orders). My question is the following: how should the communication between the client and the server be implemented? I doubt that connecting directly to the RDBMS is a good idea... Should I use web-services? XML-RPC? How to implement authentication and encode the data? Thanks for your advice!

  You have been a developer for 16 years, mostly in the unix environment woring with C, C++ and Java. You are proficient in those skills, but can always improve. The jobs for C and C++ developers working in the Unix environment are not as plentiful as they used to be, so you're looking to expand your skills. If you were going to focus on an area of technology for the next 10 years, and you had a choice of C# or to continue with your work in Java and expand those skills, which would you choose and why? I love being a programmer. I want to focus on an area that would put me in demand so that I can continue to be a programmer. • Is regularly hiring and making permanent staff redundant normal? [on hold]

  Is a cycle of hiring permanent staff and then making them redundant after 1-2 years due to 're-alignment of business goals' / 'changes in priorities' normal in the technology industry? This behaviour hardly seems justifiable, and here in the UK it is questionable whether it is even legal. I begin to wonder whether some of this behaviour I have seen in this economy is due to the companies involved not wanting to pay premium rates for contractors (who I must admit in my opinion often offer no more value), and using 'redundancy' e.g. "sorry joe, you're not needed any more", as a convenient way of recreating the contracting scenario. It seems in this situation if you're a valued developer your job probably is never at risk, but I can understand it being a worry for people and I don't think it is fair on those who are mislead into thinking that they have a longer term career with the companies which do this.

• What should I look into to find a career path?

  I am finishing up my bachelor's degree in computer science and am feeling somewhat burnt out in the field. I enjoy solving problems, programming, and using computers to find said solutions, but I feel that I never really concentrated on anything in particular and so I don't have any specialties or a path in technology to follow. I feel like a 'generic programmer' with nothing special to offer. My question is, where can I look to find this niche? I have interest in the environment, nature, sustainability, and other similar things. Is there something in these areas in particular where specialists are needed? My question is somewhat vague but where did you "find your niche"?

• What happens if we serialize and deserialize two objects which references to each other?

  To make it more clear, this is a quick example: class A implements Serializable { public B b; } class B implements Serializable { public A a; } A a = new A(); B b = new B(); a.b = b; b.a = a; So what happens if we serialize a and b objects into a file and deserialize from that file? I thought we get 4 objects, 2 of each. Identical objects but different instances. But I'm not sure if there's anything else or is it right or wrong. If any technology needed to answer, please think based on Java. Thank you.

Is it morally wrong of me to quit my job after a few years, only to hire myself out as a 'specialist' or consultant on our systems?
