  I am making an AI for my checkers game and I'm trying to make it as hard as possible. Here is the current criteria for a move on the hardest difficulty: 1: Look For A Block: This is when a piece is being threatened and another piece can be moved in behind it to protect it. If the piece cannot move out of the way without still being in danger, the computer ignores the piece. 3: If the computer player owns any kings, it will attempt to 'hunt down' enemy pieces on the board, if no moves can be made that won't in danger the king or any other pieces, the computer ignores this rule. 4: Any piece that is owned by the computer that is in column 1 or 6 will attempt to go to a side. When a piece is in column 0 or 7, it is in a very strategic position because it cannot get captured while it is in either of these columns 5: It makes an educated random move, the move will not indanger the piece that is moving or any piece that is on the board. 6: If none of the above are possible it makes a random move. This question is not really specific to any language but if all examples could be in Java that would be great, considering this app is written in android. Does anyone see any room for improvement in this algorithm? Anything that would make it better at playing checkers?

• Execute code every hour

  I need to create a web service that executes every hour. It will be used to review data in a database and add alerts to a table in the same database if certain conditions are met/not met. What we currently have is: We have end devices that use Python to report to an Amazon Web Services (AWS) virtual server. The AWS server takes that information and stores it in a MySQL database. The AWS server is Linux running Django and Apache. I need to be able to have some python code run every hour that verifies the data that has been stored by the end devices. If certain conditions are not met then a record will be added to the alerts table in the database. We originally contracted to have the above setup created. I am new to Python, Django, and Apache. However, I have already made several changes to the Python code that sends and also receives the data from the end devices. I am a coder that is breaking into web programming. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can do this?

• One page using querystring or many folders and pages?

  I have an application where I have the 'core' code in one folder for which there is a virtual directory in the root, such that I can include any core files using /myApp/core/bla.asp. I then have two folders outside of this with a default.asp which currently use the querystring to define what page should be displayed. One page is for general users, the other will only be accessible to users who have permission to manage users / usergroups / permissions. The core code checks the querystring and then checks the permissions for that user. An example of this as it is now is default.asp?action=view&viewtype=list&objectid=server. I am not worried about SEO as this is an internal app and uses Windows Auth. My question is, is it better the way it is now or would it be better to have something like the following: /server/view/list/ /server/view/?id=123 /server/create/ /server/edit/?id=123 /server/remove/?id=123 In the above folders I would have a home page which defines all the variables which are currently determined by the querystring - in /server/create/ for example, I would define the action as 'create', object name as 'server' and so on. In terms of future development, I really have no idea which method would be best. I think the 2nd method would be best in terms of following what page does what but this is such a huge change to make at this stage that I would really like some opinions, preferably based on experience. PS Sorry if the tags are wrong - I am new to this forum and thought this was a bit too much of a discussion for StackOverflow as that is very much right / wrong answer based. • Need recommendation for transferring ASP.NET MVC skills to PHP

  I am looking to translate my skills in .NET to PHP - specifically in regards to ASP.NET MVC. At work I am currently using .NET MVC 2.0 on a variety of projects and thoroughly enjoy the platform. Specifically I enjoy the very minimal configuration required to get a project up and running (just create the project, define routes, and start coding), as well as the ability for controller actions to return different items (i.e. ActionResult, JsonResult). Another piece I really like is the way the view/model interaction can be handled. For example I like being able to call return View(model) and having a view page (.aspx) load and having the full model object available to the view, regardless of the model type. I'm looking for a PHP implementation of MVC that is the most similiar to what I am already familiar with. I don't anything apart from the MVC functionality. I've looked at Zend, Symfony, CodeIgniter, etc. and, while they look like they'll be fun to play with in the future, they provide much more functionality than I need. I'd prefer to write my own DAL, form helpers, delegate handlers, authentication/ACL pieces, etc. In short, I just need something to handle the routing and view interactions and will worry about the model implementation myself. Can someone please point me to some lightweight code that accomplishes or comes close to accomplishing my objectives above. Or, can someone identify just the portions of a larger framework that do the same (again, I'm not currently interested in implementing something on a big framework, just the MVC portion and want to implement the model portion myself as much as possible).   192.168.3.1(ASA) - 192.168.2.1(ASA) - ( internet ) - 192.168.1.1(ASA) DomainController, FS, Exchange 192.168.0.1(ASA) - above is a rough idea what my network setup looks like. each internal ip (192.168.x.x) is located behind an ASA. Each location has a different gateway for the internet. They all talk to the 192.168.1.1 network for dns, dhcp, dc, exchange and so on. They can only see the 192.168.1.1, they can not see each other. In my Static Routes on my 192.168.1.1 ASA, should i have them configure as follows? example: 192.168.x.x 255.255.255.0 Locations_Internet_Gateway_IP OR 192.168.x.x 255.255.255.0 Main_Locations_Internet_Gateway_IP not sure which configurtation is correct, thanks in advance for any help!

Now if someone changes the namespace it would be harder for a code reviewer (either automated or not ) to spot an incorrect use if the namespaces changes. My question would be: Are there many ways in which the above situation can be done and what can be done to protect this namespaces? (Either in the javascript itself or by some static code analysis tool)

• Backtick (Grave accent) button sticking

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 running in a Virtual Box virtual machine, on my Windows 7 32bit system. It has been working great, except that the backtick/tilde button sticks(not physically). When I hit the backtick button it keeps repeating until another input button is pressed. So if I press the spacebar while the backtick is repeating, it stops, but if I press the shift while it is repeating, the backtick turns into a tilde, and the tilde keeps repeating until I release the shift key (at which point it's a backtick again and keeps repeating). This sticking behavior only happens with the backtick key, and only in my Ubuntu virtualization, never in windows. I've tried both my laptop's keyboard and an external USB keyboard and the problem happens on both. Both keyboards I've tried are Japanese 106/109 key layout, but I'm using them with a English(US) 101 profile. When I refer to the backtick key above, I mean where it is on the US layout. If I use the Japanese profile, the key in that location (the US backtick location) still sticks, but its no longer mapped as the backtick key. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this and possible solutions? I've searched a lot, but have not found any help so far. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  I'm trying to apply a registry fix for an Outlook/O365 issue on a user's account. The issue is that "regedit" is blocked by a domain GPO. I'm able to run "gpedit" using the local admin account. Question : When I run "regedit as the local admin, am I modifying the registry for the local admin user or the domain user who's actually logged onto the workstation? I'm trying to apply the following fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2843677 Also, the path for the above mentioned registry should end in " \Preferences" which is what I'm unable to locate. I'm able to navigate up until \Outlook. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Running Outlook 2010.

• File downloaded from IIS6/Win2003 server to a Mac (and not PCs) is incredibly slow

  We have a test zip file on our customers server that we host for him that when downloading to a Mac is incredibly slow. On a Mac - trying the download via Safari 5.0.3 and Chrome 8.0.552.231 results in a quick burst of normal download speed then plummets to almost no speed at all after 1 or 2 meg (between 1 and 5 Kb/s - yes, KiloBITS per second! According to the network monitor). Downloading via Windows was fine and speedy. Tested via; IE7 7.0.5730.13 and Chrome Portable 8.0.552.224 On Windows XP Pro, and; IE8 8.0.7600.16385 in a Windows 7 virtual machine running via VirtualBox 4.0.0 r69151 on the same Mac mention above Google hasn't helped us out on this occasion, possibly because the search terms I'm having to use are quite generic. Has anybody ever experienced this and if so how do we fix it? Thanks in advance

  Hi, I am using a Media Temple DV server with CentOS upon trying to install ImageMagick via yum, I get the following error: There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/rpm/_rpmmodule.so: undefined symbol: rpmdbCheckTerminate Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. • Intel turbo boost - in reality

  I have an Intel i7-3630QM processor in my laptop. Its speed is supposed to be from 2.4 to 3.4 GHz in turbo boost mode. In reality, will it ever run all cores on full speed (3.4GHz mentioned above) at the same time? I heard somewhere that this additional 1GHz is shared between all cores in laptops. If the boost is 1GHz per core it's pretty impressive (over 40% speed up). What does it really look like? How long can a processor run in turbo mode?

  In most companies that do programming teams and divisions consist of programmers who design and write code and managers who... well, do the management stuff. Aside from just not writing code, managers usually do not even look at the code the team develops, and may even have no proper IDE installed on their work machines. Still, the managers are to judge if a person works well, if he or she should be put in charge of something, or if particular developer should be assigned to a task of the most importance and responsibility. And last, but not least: the managers usually assign the quarterly bonuses! To do the above effectively, a manager should know if a person is a good programmer—among other traits, of course. The question is, how do they do it? They don't even look at the code people write, they can't directly assess the quality of the components programmers develop... but their estimates of who is a good coder, and who is "not as good" are nevertheless correct in most cases! What is the secret?

• Is there a pattern or best practice for passing a reference type to multiple classes vs a static class?

  My .NET application creates HTML files, and as such, the structure looks like variable myData BuildHomePage() variable graph = new BuildGraphPage(myData) variable table = BuildTablePage(myData) BuildGraphPage and BuildTablePage both require access data, the myData object. In the above example, I've passed the myData object to 2 constructors. This is what I'm doing now, in my current project. The myData object, and it's properties are all readonly. The problem is, the number of pages which will require this object has grown. In the real project, there are currently 4, but the new spec is to have about 20. Passing this object to the constructor of each new object and assigning it to a field is a little time consuming, but not a hardship! This poses the question whether it's better practice to continue as I have, or to refactor and create a new static class for myData which can be referenced from any where in my project. I guess my abilities to use Google are poor, because I did try and find an appropriate pattern as I am sure this type of design must be common place but my results returned nothing. Is there a pattern which is suited, or do best practices lean towards one implementation over another.

  Is there a software package available that can serve up a hard-drive internal to a PC and make it available over USB to other USB Master nodes as mass storage? Ex: take your C: or /dev/hda drive on a PC (let's call the computer PC-A), and run a driver program which makes your C: or /dev/hda drive available to external devices as USB mass storage. When you'd hook up another PC (PC-B) to PC-A via USB, it would detect a USB mass storage device, which is C: or /dev/hda on PC-A. Is this even possible? EDIT: I know that there are other ways of making data on a drive available between two different computers (eg. putting PC-A's hdd in a USB-drive-enclosure, or having PC-A make the hdd available via a network share). But I'd like to know if the method that I describe above is even technically possible.

If the batsman is skilled more runs will be generated. There will be a mode of play of the batsman aggressive, normal, defensive. If he plays aggressive chances of getting out will be more. If the chasing target is more the run rate should be more. If the overs are final the run rate should be more. I am using java random number function for this. • Moving from windows to linux

  I need to reconcile these 2 facts: I don't feel comfortable working on Linux; I need to develop software for Linux. Some background: I have a 10+ years of programming experience on Windows (almost exclusively C/C++, but some .NET as well), I was a user of FreeBSD at home for about 3 years or so (then had to go back to Windows), and I've never had much luck with Linux. And now I have to develop software for Linux. I need a plan. On Windows, you can get away with just knowing a programming language, an API you're coding against, your IDE (VisualStudio) and some very basic tools for troubleshooting (Depends, ProcessExplorer, DebugView, WinDbg). Everything else comes naturally. On Linux, it's a very different story. How the hell would I know what DLL (sorry, Shared Object) would load, if I link to it from Firefox plugin? What's the Linux equivalent of inserting __asm int 3/DebugBreak() in the source and running the program, and then letting the OS call a debugger? Why the hell release builds use something, called appLoader, while debug builds work somehow different? Worst of all: how to provision Linux development environment? So, taking into account that hatred is usually associated with not knowing enough, what would you recommend? I'm ok with Emacs and GCC. I need to educate myself as a Linux admin/user, and I need to learn proper troubleshooting tools (strace is cool, btw), equivalents to the ones I mentioned above. Do I need to do Linux From Scratch? Or do I need to just read some books (I've read "UNIX programming enviornment" by Kernighan and "Advanced Programming..." by Stevens, but I need to learn something more practical)? Or do I need to have some Linux distro on my home computer?

  I have just set up a Server 2008 R2 machine with Remote Desktop Services. It's all running on the one server, just for a single application, which works fine locally and when using Remote Desktop Web Access on the local network. However, when accessing it over the Internet, you can log on to RD Web Access fine, but when running the RemoteApp you get the message: RemoteApp Disconnected The remote computer could not be found. Please contact your helpdesk about this error. The application and all Remote Desktop services are on a single machine. I have purchased and installed a GoDaddy Cert. It works like a charm in the local network, but I get the above message when trying to access through rdweb How can I enable the RemoteApp to function outside the local network? I think there is one or 2 steps I left out??.. Please help...

FTPS, as it seems to perform better than SFTP The ability to send KeepAlive commands to the FTPS control port No passwords sent on the command line...sorry, curl Number 4, above, is critical: we have set KeepAlive in some other clients (e.g., CoreFTP LE) but we seem to have some routing equipment in the server environment which drops our connection when transferring a 7GB+ file. We have also set passive mode and "resume transfer" functionality seems currently broken with this secure file transport server...so we need to download the file in one go. What FTPS clients might meet our needs?

• How Can I Restrict VSFTPD to a Particular Local Group?

  I'd like to control VSFTPD access by adding users to a group such that only members of the defined group can access the FTP services. I am thinking I can do this by modifying /etc/pam.d/vsftpd, but am not sure how to get started. Or is this only for virtual users in VSFTPD? I am aware of user_list and this does not seem to support groups. This doesn't provide the function I am looking for which is described above. If I am mistaken though this would be great. • Have VIM jump to a ctag in an existing tab

  I have ctags configured with my vim installation. My habit is to usually have all of the relevant files I'm working on open in tabs in vim all at once. The "problem" is that if I use Ctrl+] to jump to a ctag in a file I'm editing, it will replace the buffer in that tab, even though I have another tab already open containing that symbol. It would be much better if it just switched to that tab and jumped to the symbol there instead. This way I would always have a 1-to-1 tab-to-file ratio. I noticed in the Changenotes for the taglist.vim plugin (which I also use) has an entry that says 1. Added support for jumping to a tag/file in a new or existing tab from the taglist window (works only with Vim7 and above). However, I couldn't find anything in the documentation for Taglist (or Ctags) about how to actually do this. Can any vim gurus fill me in? Thanks!

I usually add this to a partial and include the partial in my layouts. "flash", :id = flash_type % "text/javascript" do % setTimeout("new Effect.Fade('');", 10000); This will wrap the flash message in a div with class=‘flash’ and id=‘error’, ‘notice’ or ‘warn’ depending on the flash key specified.The value ‘10000’ is the time in milliseconds before the flash will disappear. In this case, 10 seconds.This function looks pretty good and little javascript stunts like this can help make your site feel more professional. It’s also worth bearing in mind though, not everybody can see well or read as quickly as others so this may not be suitable for every application.Update:As Mitchell has pointed out (see comments below), it may be better to set the flash_type as the div class rather than it’s id. If there is the possibility that you’ll be showing more than one flash message per page, setting the flash_type as the div id will result in your HTML/XHTML code becoming invalid because the unique intentifier will be used more than once per page.Here is a slightly more complex version of the method shown above that will hide all divs with class ‘flash’ after a time delay, achieving the same effect and also ensuring your code stays valid with more than one flash message! • Magento - How to manage multiple base currencies and multiple payment gateways?

  I have two requirements to satisfy, I hope someone with more experience can help me sorting them out. Multiple Base Currencies My client wants to allow visitors to place orders in whatever currency they prefer, choosing from the ones he’ll configure. Magento only supports one Base Currency, and this is, obviously, not what I need. I checked the solution involving multiple websites, but I need a customer to be registered once and stay on the same website, not to switch from one to the other and have to register/log in on each. Manage multiple Payment Gateways per currency and per payment method This is another crucial requirement, and it’s tied to the first one. My client wants to “route” payments in different currencies to different accounts. He’ll thus have one for Euro, one for USD and one for GBP. Whenever a customer pays with one of these currencies, the payment gateway has to be chosen accordingly. Additionally, the gateway should be different depending on other rules. For example, if customer pays with a Debit Card, my client will have a payment gateway configured especially for it. If customer pays with MasterCard, the gateway will be different, and so on. The complication, in this case, arises from the fact that my client uses Realex Payments and, although it would be possible for him to open multiple accounts, the Realex module expects one single gateway. In a normal scenario, we would need up to six instead: Payment with Debit Card in Euro Payment with Credit Card in Euro Payment with Debit Card in US Dollars Payment with Credit Card in US Dollars Payment with Debit Card in GB Pounds Payment with Credit Card in GB Pounds This, of course, if he doesn’t decide to accept other payment methods, such as bank transfer, which would add one more gateway per currency. Is there a way to achieve the above in Magento? I never had such complicated requirements before, and I’m a bit lost. Thanks in advance for the help.

• Camera wont stay behind model after pitch, then rotation

  I have a camera position behind a model. Currently, if I push the left thumbstick making my model move forward, backward, or strafe, the camera stays with the model. If I push the right thumbstick left or right, the model rotates in those directions fine along with the camera rotating while maintaining its position relatively behind the model. But when I pitch the model up or down, then rotate the model afterwards, the camera moves slightly rotates in a clock-like fashion behind the model. If I do a few rotations of the model and try to pitch the camera, the camera will eventually be looking at the side, then eventually the front of the model while also rotating in a clock-like fashion. My question is, how do I keep the camera to pitch up and down behind the model no matter how much the model has rotated?
