  • Java EE @ NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium Des Moines

    As some of you may be aware I recently joined the well-respected US based No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour. The NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium was held August 8 - 10 in Des Moines. The Des Moines show is one of the smaller ones but still was good overall. It is one of the few events of it's kind that take place this part the country so it is extremely important. I had five talks total over two days, more or less back-to-back. I had decent attendance for all my sessions and had many of the same folks staying for multiple sessions which is always a very good sign. I did talks on Java EE 7/Java EE 8, WebSocket, the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints, JavaScript + Java EE and NoSQL + Java EE.   • Why does Linq to Entity Sum return null when the result set is empty?

    There are quite a few questions on Stack Overflow about the Linq to Entity / Linq to SQL Sum extension method, about how it returns null when the result set is empty: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and many more, as well as a blog post discussing the issue here. I feel it is an inconsistency in the Linq implementation. I am assuming at this point that it is not a bug, but is more or less working as designed. I understand that there are workarounds (for example, casting the field to a nullable type, so you can coalesce with ??), and I also understand that for the underlying SQL, a NULL result is expected for an empty result set. But because the result of the Sum extension for non-nullable types is also non-nullable, why does the Linq to SQL / Linq to Entity Sum behave this way?

    I'm trying to understand the maths of moving points in a 3d space by making a game written in C#. I'm looking at this wolfire blog series which explains some basic 3d maths. I've read the first two parts but am stuck on the 3rd. I know it's all really rudimentary stuff but I find Googling for help with equations really hard. The one I'm struggling with is: 0*(0.66,0.75) + 2*(-0.75, 0.66) = (-1.5, 1.3) How can anything multiplied by 0 not be 0? So my question is how does this look in code: x(a,b) + y(c,d) I know it's basic stuff but I just can't see it.

  • How to troubleshoot rendering differences between Chrome/IE and Firefox? [on hold]

    I have a personal website and just realized that the display is very different between Firefox (tested 19.0.2 and 25) and Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m Firefox display (this is how I intended it to look. In Chrome & IE9.0 the DIVs all seem to stagger on their own..... ? Im just an amateur and this is my personal blog for fun, Ive never had to troubleshoot a rendering issue like this one. Not sure how to go about doing it? Can Firebug help with determining where layout is inherited from? I have sample HTML if needed but didn't want to cloud up the questions a wall of text.

  • How to compare page views/visitors to site totals in Google Analytics?

    I want to measure the effects in total traffic (views or visitors) of a single URL across a time frame. For example, let's say I published a blog post on July 2012. I want to measure what chunk of the site's total traffic is coming to this particular post on a month-by-month graph from July 2012 to date. Is there a way to do this? Edit: I should clarify that what I'd like to do is to generate a month-to-month graph, similar to the one you can see comparing a metric on a period of time against the previous equivalent period (year vs last year, for example) but comparing a particular URL traffic to the site's total traffic. In other words, I can get to the part where I can see the URL's traffic for the timeframe I selected and it shows how much of the total traffic corresponds to the current URL: But I'd like to add a second line to the graph, representing the site's total pageviews, similiar to this (but this one is showing just a different metric for the same URL): Thanks!

In this talk, I discussed a Master/Detail application that runs on Android 2.2 devices and forward. I used the Actionbar compat Android library to allow the older devices to have an actionbar. I also used a SQLite database for my data.   • Starting an animation from the ViewModel in WPF/MVVM

    I'm writing a MVVM app and have started putting in a few animations. I want to call something on the ViewModel which starts the a storyboard. This blog had a promising approach to it, but it doesn't actually work. The IDChanged handler never fires for some reason. I also found that you could start animations on EventTriggers, but I don't know how to raise one on the ViewModel.

    I'm trying to set the preprocessor variable in wix and i'm unable to find an example of this or explanation on how to do it anywhere on the internet, i'm hoping somebody here can explain or show me where im going wrong! I have tried the example shown here regarding setting var values http://www.ageektrapped.com/blog/setting-properties-for-wix-in-msbuild/ The documentation for using the HeatDirectory taks in wix can be found here and is not very useful at all! How do i set the preprocessorVariable to substitute the SourceDir for another variable name?
