  • can power supply affect I/O

    I have a dev server machine running Ubuntu 12.04. For a long while it's been throwing intermittent errors where it would suddenly tell me "File system is read only" or drop into a GRUB error console on boot. I've done disk checks, bad blocks, etc. and no real problems with the main SATA drive were detected. Finally the drive would not be detected at all-- but neither would other drives I plugged in (via SATA). I plugged the supposedly "bad" drive into another server and it worked fine, no issues, for days-- so I assumed the motherboard had a bad SATA controller, and replaced the motherboard with an identical model. I replaced the drive into the original machine with the new motherboard, rebooted-- and the same issues-- I/O errors, failure to read the drive at all, dropping into GRUB, etc. I'm wondering if there could be some other issue with this machine, that's not related to the drive-- possibly power supply? Thanks for ideas

  • How to dual boot Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows XP sp3 on Dell Dimension 8250 desktop using 2 hard drives

    I'd like instructions to dual boot Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows XP (sp3) on my desktop Dell Dimension 8250 (this is old and has 1.5 GB RAM which is maximum). I will be using 2 hard drives. Windows XP is already on a 120 GB drive and and Ubuntu 12.10 will go on a separate 80 GB hard drive. Both drives are IDE using a 80 conductor cable where the 40 pin blue connector connects to the motherboard. The middle connector is gray and is "normally" used for slave (device 1) and the black connector at the very end of the cable is meant for the master drive (device 0) or a single drive if only one is used. First, I do not wish the XP drive to have its boot modified by Ubuntu in any way. It should remain untouched...virgin. Let me know where the XP drive and the Ubuntu drive should be connected based upon the cable I've mentioned above, as well as jumper settings for both during the whole process. I'm just guessing, but should I remove the XP drive and put the empty Ubuntu drive in its place and install Ubuntu? By the way, I already have made the DVD ISO disk. For your information, the BIOS for this machine is version A03. When I tap F12 to get to the boot menu, I have the following choices: Normal (this will take me to a black screen with white type giving me the choice to boot to XP or to my external USB backup recovery drive) Diskette Drive Hard-Disk Drive c: IDE CD-ROM Drive (Note that if the CD Drive is empty, it will then go to the DVD drive) System Setup IDE Drive Diagnostics Boot to Utility Partition (This is Dell's various testing utilities) Thank you in advance for your help.   • Is Accessing USB from web application for cross browser cross os possible at all ?

    Hey Guys, I am wondering if there is anyway we can achieve this. I heard different things about Silverlight 4 , Java Script or Active X control but not seen any demo of code for any of them. Does anyone know any web component that is available or how to write one. We really like capture client's USB drive via Web and read/write data on it. This has to work for ANY Operating system in Any web browser. Thanks UPDATED What about WPF in browser mode...I read that I can host my wpf apps inside browser and sort of like smart client. Here is a great example of doing this via silverlight 4 but author mentions about possibility of accessing USB on MAC via 1) Enable executing AppleScripts. This option will let us have the same amount of control on a mac machine as we do on a windows machine. 2) Add an overload to ComAutomationFactory.CreateObject() that calls the “Tell Application” command under the scenes and gets a AppleScript object. This option would work extremely well for Office automation. For any other operating system feature, you’ll have to code OS access twice.  I did not quite understand it. Has any tried this ?

  • How to write a generic USB Host Driver for Printers from various vendors?

    I want to develop a USB host on an embedded device that will talk to printers from various vendors. Drivers for the vendor specific printers would be available on PC which is ultimately communicating with printer but my device is facilitating this communication and needs to perform the basic handshaking/setup of the printer (i.e, it needs to know when the printer is connected, what are the socket IDs that needs to be opened for CTRL and DATA transmissions etc). All of these printers are supposed to comply with IEEE 1284.4 standards but I see that many of them vary quiet a bit. One approach I have is to take the USB traces of handshaking from each of these printers and write various sections of code respectively (I know, that sounds ridiculous!). Is there a generic way to do this? Is there any available forum where these standard informations are mentioned? For eg: EPSON uses 'EPSON-CTRL' and 'EPSON-DATA' for its control and data services which needs to be provided to get the socket ID for these services. I am pretty sure HPs, Canon's etc would have their own service names as well. As per the standards, this was supposed to be captured in IANA but I dont see anything there. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards, Ullas

  • How to run Repository Creation Utility (RCU) on 64-bit Linux

    I was setting up WebCenter Content (WCC) on a new virtual box running 64-bit Linux and ran into a problem when I tried to run the Repository Creation Utility (RCU). I saw this error when trying to start RCU .../rcuHome/jdk/jre/bin/java: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory I think I remember running into this before and reading something about RCU only being supported on 32-bit Linux. I decided to try and see if I could get it to run on 64-bit Linux. I saw it was using it's own copy of java (.../rcuHome/jdk/jre/bin/java), so I decided to try and get it to use the 64-bit JRockit I had already installed. I edited the rcu script in rcuHome/bin and replaced JRE_DIR=$ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre with JRE_DIR=/apps/java/jrockit-jdk1.6.0_29-R28.2.2-4.1.0 Sure enough that fixed it. I was able to run RCU and create the WCC schema.

  • Personal | Going For A Long Drive

    This weekend, we were planning on going to Mt. Rushmore, but with the weather the way it is, we decided to head south instead. So what are we going to do? A tour of different restaurants on the show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Not very original I know since there are web sites and iPhone apps dedicated to locating the establishments, but it definitely sounds like it could be some fun. We are going to leave KC tonight and go through St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock, Dallas, Oklahoma City, and back to KC. The kiddos are excited and we have plenty of movies, coloring books, etc in the car for the trip. This will be the first time we will get to use our turn around seats in the mini-van with our pull out table. I will have my laptop and phone if anything goes wrong with the site while I am gone and John will be back in KC as well. I hope to pushing some photos and reviews of the restaurants as we travel.   • Linux Mint is Brilliant

    Most of my blog posts sound way too whiny. I'm not that guy. (Am I?) I've been using SUSE-flavored Linux for personal projects since 2002 (SUSE Linux 8.1). This past weekend, I made the heart-wrenching decision to abandon openSUSE (version 12.1) in favor of Linux Mint (version Maya). OpenSUSE had just become too burdensome. Packages that installed easily on RedHat or Debian always had issues running on top of OpenSUSE. And I never could get the Heroku Toolbelt installed in any kind of usable state.And so, ...I'm beginning again with this enticing young thing -- Mint with the Cinnamon window environment. Delicious.   • USB Mouse and Keyboard not working in Linux 4 Tegra

    I am a new person in Tegra Linux development. I have Tamontem NG Evaluation board with Tegra 3 Chip. I installed L4T sample file system from NVIDIA tegra Resources (https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra) and installed the file system as described in the documentation provided in NVIDIA site. Already these was an SD card with L4T running. i dont want to change the boot loader. So I copied the boot.scr.uimg to root (/) folder and uImage to boot(/boot/) and it starts booting from the existing SD card. After that while booting, some errors occurred in some Bluetooth devices (there is no bluetooth device in the board). So I disabled Bluetooth by giving the following command sudo mv /etc/init/bluetooth.conf /etc/init/bluetooth.conf.noexec Now the problem is that mouse and keyboard are not working. So i cannot login. Even though i installed desktop, the mouse and keyboard are not working. But mouse and keyboard are enumerating. lsusb command is showing the USB mouse and keyboard. The installed file system is Ubuntu 13.04. Linux Kernel version is 3.1 What to do. Please help.Thanks in Advance.

I am pretty basic with the linux bash sudo/apt-get/sl/ls/locate/updatedb/etc... I don't really know the full power of the terminal. I have this Linux Mint and i installed it on to one of my desktop PC, i have downloaded and installed freerdp-x11 for me to connect into my windows terminal server...The thing that I really need help is, i want the terminal command line to connect automatically to the windows terminal server so that every time i boot my Linux Mint pc i wouldn't have to keep typing "xfreerdp 000.000.0.000" on the terminal command line...Is there a script for it..????
