• Solo .NET Programmer moving to a team

  I've been a solo .NET programmer for a small startup for the last 8 years. I've put together some pretty decent software, and I always strived to better myself and conform to best practices, including source control (SVN/TFS). I worked very closely with a team of engineers of other disciplines, but when it came down to the software I was the only one programming. I love the craft of programming and love learning new things to sharpen my tools. In 2 weeks I will be starting a new job in a team of 20 .NET developers. My position will be mid-level, and I will be working under some programmers with incredibly impressive backgrounds. Again, the team aspect of development will be new to me, so I'm looking for some general "new guy" tips that will help me be as effective and easy to get along with as possible from the get-go. Anything goes, including high level tips, and small day-to-day things about communication.

• Does Ubuntu Touch consume less power than Android?

  One of the problems of new OSs is power consumption. That is because power and performance requires a lot of tweaks and experience with the kernel, drivers and OS code-base on one hand, and a lot of extensive long-term test and quality assurance on the other hand. Given that Android is a rather old and established OS I saw that it has pretty good power consumption. Phoronix does this kind of comparissions but I was not able to find much about Ubuntu Touch. Does Ubuntu Touch consume less than Android, do you have data on some platforms compared?

• Doing practice jobsearch/technical interviews?

  I graduated college last year & I've never gone through the interview process - my current programming position evolved out of projects I did in school, but in a few months I'm making a clean break and moving across the country so I'm going to have to face a "grown-up" jobsearch. I'm kind of scared of technical interviews - I think I'm pretty good at my job and my hobby programming projects ... but what if it turns out I'm part of that group that thinks they're qualified, but really just cause despair at the state of education in the hearts of interviewers? So, I'm thinking of doing a "practice" job hunt in my current city to get an idea of what it's like and what kind of experience/expertise employers are really looking for. Is this a dick move ethically (applying to/interviewing for jobs I can't take)? If so, is there another good way to prepare for technical interviews, especially those little trick puzzle-type questions?

• I want to master ASP.NET - What concepts should I focus on/What concepts do you most value?

  I start a job this summer doing work in ASP.NET 4 (C#). I plan on working with some legacy code as well as MVC. I want to get a running start. I have good understanding of HTML/CSS/Javascript, and pretty good understanding of C# itself, Design principles, Design Patterns, and understand masterpages, basic MVC2, and code behinds for web forms. In your opinion what aspects of ASP.NET are the most important to master for web applications? What do you value most in your usage of ASP.NET? Do you have a recommendation for understanding the internals of ASP.NET itself?

• Unable to mount samsung galaxy S3 via USB

  Connecting as either MTP or PTP: neither allows one to see pictures saved as default by phone camera to DCIM folder on external SD card. Similar problems with previous models (e.g. S2) were solvable by 'usb utilities' in wireless & networking settings, but this is no longer present. Other suggestions have mentioned uninstalling various libraries... but i don't wanna just start cutting stuff without knowing it'll help. Any thoughts? Seems like a pretty epic fail from google & samsung. There's not even a linux section on the relevant google site... despite android's usb driver being part of the linux kernel which powers android. Boo!

  I'm having a discussion with a fellow developer, and I'm trying to argument this in something like a short "term". SoC (Separation of Concerns) is pretty straight forward design practice, but it dwells deeper. If we want to pick on it's deep corners, we can Google it and there are plenty of articles that pop up, and after taking a glimpse, we know a lot more, and might find some examples. But, what about "Use procedures that execute a single task"? That's also a great design principle to use when writing applications and it becomes more and more rewarding, the larger the application gets. • What is the best way to find a python google app engine coach?

  i'm a software engineer and have been building Google App Engine apps with Python for about a year. I have a pretty good familiarity with the main concepts: web app framework, modeling, queues, memcache, django templates, etc. Where I think I'm lacking is in methodology. Architecting the app, using git for versioning, designing an writing unit tests. I'm totally convinced to incorporate these practices in my development style, and have started reading up on them. However I've learned that I'm a much faster learner when I have someone experienced to ask questions to and interact with. IRC channels and forums like stack overflow are great. But sometimes you want something more dynamic that produces results faster. So my question is how can a person find an experienced engineer that is familiar with the technologies he uses and that is willing to give them a couple of hours of Skype coaching sessions per week in return for an hourly fee...

• Why do employers care so much about GPA?

  I went to a pretty good engineering school and did CS. I graduated with a 2.86 gpa and really tried my best. I even took a few graduate classes in place of undergrad courses to challenge myself. I really liked those a lot. But the second question I am always asked is "What was your gpa?", this of course always comes after "How are you today?". Once I tell them either 2.86 or a rounded 2.9 they immediately shut off. I have even had them stop the interview saying the 3.0 is the cut off. Does a tenth of a point really mean that much?

• Acer Aspire installation of Ubuntu as the one and only OS

  I am quite sick of a Win7 limited edition that was pre-installed on my Acer Aspire One 533. I want to have Ubuntu as the only OS on this little thing. I have tested Ubuntu on a pretty unstable system and I am simply in love with it, despite the fact that I am still on the learning path. So my questions is how do I format/erase all previous info, including windows files? I am interested in a real cleanup of the drives rather than just a re-partitioning, because I travel every now and then and I want to prevent any personal data remaining on the drives for anyone with recovery knowledge to sniff through. • Best practices of texture size

  I wanted to know how should I determine a good texture size ? Currently, I always create UV texture that are 1024x1024px but if I create for example, a big house with a 1024px texture size, it will looks pretty bad. So, should I create different texture size (512, 1024, ...) for different mesh size like this ? : or is it better to always do high-resolution texture and then reduce it in the software (ie : increase the LODBias settings in UDK reduce the size of the texture) ? I mostly found existing changelog on website (the term changelog is pretty used) or explanation on how to manage the release numbers, which I don't care. • What are the packages/libraries I should install before compiling Python from source?

  Once in a while I need to install a new Ubuntu (I used it both for desktop and servers) and I always forget a couple of libraries I should have installed before compiling, meaning I have to recompile, and it's getting annoying. So now I want to make a complete list of all library packages to install before compiling Python (and preferably how optional they are). Off the top of my head I can remember these: build-essential (obviously) libz-dev (also pretty common and essential) libreadline-dev (or the Python prompt is crap) But I know there are many more. Please tell me and I'll update.

• Calculating an orbit and approach velocties

  I have drones in my game that need to approach and orbit a node and shoot at it. Problem is I want to stay away from a real physics simulation, meaning I don't want to give the node and drone a mass and the drone's thrusters' a force. I just want to find the best way to approach and then enter orbit. There was a pretty good answer about using bezier curves and doing it that way, but that is essentially a tween between two fixed points. The nodes are also moving as the drones enter orbit.

• Writing to a structured buffer with a compute shader (D3D11)

  I have some problems writing to a structured buffer. First I create a structured buffer that is filled with float values beginning from 0 to 99. Afterwards a copy the structured buffer to a CPU accessible buffer is made to print the content of the structured buffer to the console. The output is as expected (Numbers 0 to 99 appear on the console). Afterwards I use a compute shader that should change the contents of the structured buffer: RWStructuredBuffer<float> Result : register( u0 ); [numthreads(1, 1, 1)] void CS_main( uint3 GroupId : SV_GroupID ) { Result[GroupId.x] = GroupId.x * 10; } But the compute shader does not change the contents of the structured buffer. • Wubi downloaded and installed 64bit 12.10 on my 32bit netbook

  I downloaded the Wubi installer on my atom N450 netbook. When I started up Ubuntu I got an error that read failed to change the mode of /ect/passwd- to 0600. Then while it booted it froze and several strange characters filled the screen. Finally it loaded it ran pretty slow, and I could connect to my router, but not to the internet. Ping 8.8.8.8 showed no server found. So I checked the about computer and it said I was running the 64 bit installation. Now I know that my computer has a low power 32 bit chip and even the Ubuntu iso download suggested a 32 bit installation. So I went to double check and see if I just missed the option for a 32 bit Wubi install and I did not. There was no option. Is there any way to download a 32 bit version of 12.10 through the Wubi?

• Google displaying swf menu in SiteLinks

  I have a website that uses a Flash based menu as its main navigation. A plain HTML fallback version is "lying underneath", the swf is embedded using swfobject. swfobject.embedSWF('MENU.swf', 'menu', '1000', '600', '8.0.0', 'ext/expressInstall.swf', {}, {wmode:'transparent',bgcolor:'#666666'}, {}); Somehow Google now started displaying a link to the swf-file in the SiteLinks (noting [SWF] beforehand) which is pretty ugly as the Flash content gets all scrambled and all you see is a random string of characters and numbers (it looks "hacked" to me, although I do know it is not). Also, the link to the swf is plain useless as it relies on JavaScript-functions in the HTML-document. I already demoted the swf in the Webmaster Tools, yet in some situations the link will still show up. Is anyone aware of this problem (I haven't found too much on this on the Internet) and knows how I can keep the search results from linking to the swf?

• Best choise of gui platform/framework for 3d development [closed]

  The title pretty much says it all, so I'm developing a 3d engine for Directx 11, and it's going good so far. I started using .net forms as a GUI, but then(Of curiosity), i jumped to MFC, and the app looked great, but in my perspective, MFC is badly written, and it's too complicated, meaning that some things just took forever, while it would have taken a few seconds in .net forms. But my real question is: If i want to make an Editor for a 3d scene, where directx renders in the form( This was accomplished in .net forms), what would be the best choise of gui platform/framework? MFC,.net forms, Qt, etc....

• Which programming career path fits my terms? [closed]

  I am sick and tired of my enterprise development job, I need some programming direction like this: Demanded in jobs-market Demanded in freelance market Can use Ubuntu as development environment Not enterprise. Standalone, mobile, web-development, anything, just not enterprise. Basically, I need a programming direction which doesn't need 20 developers, terribly big databases systems and long going projects with intense long-term support, I don't want enterprise job where a lot of people are working on one terribly big project and do modules to it all day long. Instead, I need something where: Projects change pretty often Projects are little, or medium-sized (in terms of code, modules and people working on it) but still not enterprise-sized Possible for freelance, solo-development, or at least requires a team of 3-4 programmers. Not like in enterprise where you feel like a drop in the sea with your 50 classes while system itself has hundreds of classes. Suggestions please?

• How can I connect my HP Photosmart C3100 printer in 10.04 (regression from 9.x)

  My printer was working under 9.x. It is a an HP Photosmart C3100 series. When I open Admin-Printing no local printers are found. I try to add via Other (My local choices are Serial and other). I have tried many url's - ipp://localhost:631/ipp, http://localhost/ipp, localhost, 127.0.0.1, etc... None have worked. Under the networked I have tried JetDirect, using localhost and 127.0.0.1 and port 631. I have tried many options under IPP with different variants in the host trying to verify a printer. No luck .I tried LPD/LPR with localhost and tried the probe. no luck. I tried the cups admin via localhost:631 and that didn't work. On the old version its simply found the local printer, I might have picked the driver, I can't remember but it was the photosmart c3100 series that was working.I just can't get 10.04 to print.

• Memory Management/Embedded Management in C

  Im wondering if there is a set or a few good books/Tutorials/Etc.. that go into Memory Management/Allocation Specifically (or at least have a good dedicated section to it) when it comes to C. This is more for me learning Embedded and trying to keep Size down. I've read and Learned C fine, and the "standard" Learning books. However most of the books don't spend a huge amount of time (Understandably since C is pretty huge in general) going into the Finer details about whats going on Down Under. • Switching Programming Languages

  Hi I'm a senior level Delphi developer looking for move into either C# or possibly Java roles. I have around 8 years of development experience of which pretty much all of it is in Delphi, I have very little commercial experience in C# and no commercial experience in Java. I have about 6 months worth of academic experience in both Java and C# from some University papers I took a 4 years ago and use these languages for hobby projects, so I know the languages I just don't have the commercial experience to back it up. Given that I'm too over qualified for a junior role but do not have the commercial experience for even an intermediate role how does one go about changing jobs?
