  • Windows 7/Ubuntu 12 dual boot deleted for Windows 8 installation. How to make grub rescue go away?

    I had a Windows 7/Ubuntu 12 dual boot and I decided to clean install Windows 8 over them. The problem is that after I deleted all partitions and installed windows I was getting an "Operation system not found", however after an "enter" the system will normally boot into Windows 8. I realized that Windows did their trick and put the system (not partition anymore?!?) "tag" (Disk Management) on my media hard drive. After trying to fix the boot/mbr to be able to boot from my main drive the "Operation system not found" changed to the "grub rescue" prompt. I know that I cannot use that because I have killed the grub files. Windows can still boot as long as I choose to boot from the media drive. The question is, is there any way to move the "system", whatever it is now, to the main drive and have the PC boot from there, while making grub disappear? And if that is possible after that, can I just make the Media drive inactive or I will have to somehow remove the "system" tag?

I modified the client side code for a server/client communication program, by creating two threads for the client side, main thread for receiving user's input, and inputThread for receiving server's response.   • IPS Package Groups

    IPS group packages consist solely of dependencies on other packages that make up a logical grouping of software. These are similar to, but not the equivalent of, Solaris 10 metaclusters. The main difference is that metaclusters are nested subsets ranging from a minimal install to nearly all packages on the media. Group packages have no such hierarchy. They can overlap other groups, or be completely disjoint sets. A group dependency is set this way in an IPS package manifest file: depend fmri=full/pkg/name type=group Current Solaris Groups Solaris currently has 4 system groups defined. These are used for different types of installation, and are included in the xml manifest files used by the various Solaris installers: Package Name Summary Description Default Installation For:  group/system/solaris-desktop Oracle Solaris Desktop Provides an Oracle Solaris desktop environment Live Media  group/system/solaris-large-server Oracle Solaris Large Server Provides an Oracle Solaris large server environment Text Installer  group/system/solaris-small-server Oracle Solaris Small Server Provides a useful command-line Oracle Solaris environment  Zones  group/system/solaris-auto-install  Oracle Solaris Automated Installer Client  Provides an Oracle Solaris Automated Installer client  Automated Installer There are also several "feature" groups such as AMP and GNU Developer Tools. These are provided for convenience, but are not used directly by any installers. Retrieving Group Package Information A listing of all current groups can be found with the command: pkg info -r group/* A listing of all the packages in a group can be obtained with: pkg contents -o fmri -H -rt depend -a type=group groupname An example: $ pkg contents -o fmri -H -rt depend -a type=group solaris-desktop archiver/gnu-tar audio/audio-utilities codec/flac codec/libtheora codec/ogg-vorbis codec/speex communication/im/pidgin etc. You can determine which package group is currently installed on your system: $ pkg list group/system/\* Output would look like: NAME (PUBLISHER) VERSION IFO group/system/solaris-desktop 0.5.11-0.175.0.0.0.0.0 i-- Note that there are not version numbers associated with a group package dependency. The package version that best fits the system will be used, based on other dependencies such as what is listed in incorporation files.     When we create a .cs file means code file class is automatically create. That .cs file means class has default usings for namespace. using System;using System.Collections.Generic;using System.Linq;using System.Web;using System.Web.UI;using System.Web.UI.WebControls; We don't use all namespaces  in that class so we have to remove unused namespaces from file. We can remove  namespace manually but it takes time and need full knowledge of class library so we can use Visual Studio . Step 1:  Right Click in .cs File. Step 2:  Move on Organize usings. Step 3: Click on Remove Unused Usings. After that we have only those namespaces in the file these are using.

    Writing the tests for FluentPath is a challenge. The library is a wrapper around a legacy API (System.IO) that wasnt designed to be easily testable. If it were more testable, the sensible testing methodology would be to tell System.IO to act against a mock file system, which would enable me to verify that my code is doing the expected file system operations without having to manipulate the actual, physical file system: what we are testing here is FluentPath, not System.IO.     When I try to install a SharePoint Solution using PowerShell, I got the error “How to fix Install-SPSolution: Admin SVC must be running in order to create deployment timer job”. The reason you got error is that SharePoint 2010 Administration is not started, so to fix it you just need to start the services. Problem: Solution: To fix the issues, you need to start the SharePoint 2010 Administration service. 1. Go to services control panel. 2. Start the SharePoint 2010 Administration service. 3. Rerun your PowerShell, it should fix the problem. However, you might get another problem “A deployment or retraction is already under way for the solution “*.wsp”, and only one deployment or retraction at a time is supported”, for this problem you can check my other blog here.

  • How do you get users to rank their software enhancement needs?

    I've inherited a legacy software system, and have been tasked with performing usability and system upgrades. While there's nothing bad with the system, from discussions with the users, there are "small" usabilty issues that need to be addressed. At this stage I'm the lone developer on this system, and apart from testing I don't use the system at all, so its difficult for me to know what issues may exist or are percieved to exist. I'm going to have some time to speak with them all and discuss what they percieve to be good/bad or indifferent about the system. Since its essentially just me for the time being my time is limit. So I was considering asking them to imagine that I'd only be able to do one change, have them all write privately what they'd want that one change to be, and then helping them rank those, but I'm hoping for other tips as well. What techniques exist for getting users to explain their wants, needs, and requirements, while also having them rank them by importance or desirability?

  • Parse JSON in C#

    I'm trying to parse some JSON data from the Google AJAX Search API. I have this URL and I'd like to break it down so that the results are displayed. I've currently written this code, but I'm pretty lost in regards of what to do next, although there are a number of examples out there with simplified JSON strings. Being new to C# and .NET in general I've struggled to get a genuine text output for my ASP.NET page so I've been recommended to give JSON.NET a try. Could anyone point me in the right direction to just simply writing some code that'll take in JSON from the Google AJAX Search API and print it out to the screen? EDIT: I think I've made some progress in regards to getting some code working using DataContractJsonSerializer. Here is the code I have so far. Any advice on whether this is close to working and/or how I would output my results in a clean format? EDIT 2: I've followed the advice from Dreas Grech and the StackOverflowException has gone.     I'm getting the following error when trying to connect to a remote mysql server. Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.Odbc.OdbcPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I've installed the odbc 5.1 driver, and can connect to the database using the Data Sources (ODBC) tool in Control Panel. However when I try and run my C# scrip to connect, I get the above error. I've read its something to do with trust levels or something? I don't quite understand what people were talking about though. I went to C:... Framework/v2.0.50727/CONFIG and added to the medium and high trust.config files, but that didn't help.. Can someone help me out here please?   • How to set up a user Quartz2D coordinate system with scaling that avoids fuzzy drawing?

    This topic has been scratched once or twice, but I am still puzzled. And Google was not friendly either. Since Quartz allows for arbitrary coordinate systems using affine transform, I want to be able to draw things such as floorplans using real-life coordinate, e.g. feet. So basically, for the sake of an example, I want to scale the view so that when I draw a 10x10 rectangle (think a 1-inch box for example), I get a 60x60 pixels rectangle. It works, except the rectangle I get is quite fuzzy. Another question here got an answer that explains why. However, I'm not sure I understood that reason why, and moreover, I don't know how to fix it. Here is my code: I set my coordinate system in my awakeFromNib custom view method: - (void) awakeFromNib { CGAffineTransform scale = CGAffineTransformMakeScale(6.0, 6.0); self.transform = scale; } And here is my draw routine: - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); CGRect r = CGRectMake(10., 10., 11., 11.); CGFloat lineWidth = 1.0; CGContextStrokeRectWithWidth(context, r, lineWidth); } The square I get is scaled just fine, but totally fuzzy. Playing with lineWidth doesn't help: when lineWidth is set smaller, it gets lighter, but not crisper. So is there a way to set up a view to have a scaled coordinate system, so that I can use my domain coordinates? Or should I go back and implementing scaling in my drawing routines? Note that this issue doesn't occur for translation or rotation. Thanks

  • How do you efficiently implement a document similarity search system?

    How do you implement a "similar items" system for items described by a set of tags? In my database, I have three tables, Article, ArticleTag and Tag. Each Article is related to a number of Tags via a many-to-many relationship. For each Article i want to find the five most similar articles to implement a "if you like this article you will like these too" system. I am familiar with Cosine similarity and using that algorithm works very well. But it is way to slow. For each article, I need to iterate over all articles, calculate the cosine similarity for the article pair and then select the five articles with the highest similarity rating. With 200k articles and 30k tags, it takes me half a minute to calculate the similar articles for a single article. So I need another algorithm that produces roughly as good results as cosine similarity but that can be run in realtime and which does not require me to iterate over the whole document corpus each time. Maybe someone can suggest an off-the-shelf solution for this? Most of the search engines I looked at does not enable document similarity searching.

  • C# - Alternative to System.Time.Timer, to call a function at a specific time.

    Hello everybody. I want to call a specific function on my C# application at a specific time. At first i thought about using a Timer (System.Time.Timer), but that soon became impossible to use. Why? Simple. The Timer Class requires a Interval in milliseconds, but considering that i might want the function to be executed, lets says in a week that would mean: 7 Days = 168 hours; 168 Hours = 10,080 minutes; 10,080 Minutes = 6,048,000 seconds; 6,048,000 Seconds = 6,048,000,000 milliseconds; So the Interval would be 6,048,000,000; Now lets remember that the Interval accepted data type is int, and as we know int range goes from -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647. That makes Timer useless in this case once we cannot set a Interval bigger that 2,147,483,647 milliseconds. So i need a solution where i could specify when the function should be called. Something like this: solution.ExecuteAt = "30-04-2010 15:10:00"; solution.Function = "functionName"; solution.Start(); So when the System Time would reach "30-04-2010 15:10:00" the function would be executed in the application. How can this problem be solved? Thanks just by taking the time to read my question. But if you could provide me with some help i would be most grateful. Additional Info: What these functions will do? Getting climate information and based on that info: Starting / Shutting down other Applications (most of them Console Based); Sending custom Commands to those Console Applications; Power down, Rebooting, Sleep, Hibernate the computer; And if possible schedule the BIOS to Power Up the Computer;

  • How to force ADO.Net to use only the System.String DataType in the readers TableSchema.

    Howdy, I am using an OleDbConnection to query an Excel 2007 Spreadsheet. I want force the OleDbDataReader to use only string as the column datatype. The system is looking at the first 8 rows of data and inferring the data type to be Double. The problem is that on row 9 I have a string in that column and the OleDbDataReader is returning a Null value since it could not be cast to a Double. I have used these connection strings: Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source="ExcelFile.xlsx";Persist Security Info=False;Extended Properties="Excel 12.0;IMEX=1;HDR=No" Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source="ExcelFile.xlsx";Persist Security Info=False;Extended Properties="Excel 8.0;HDR=No;IMEX=1" Looking at the reader.GetSchemaTable().Rows[7].ItemArray[5], it's dataType is Double. Row 7 in this schema correlates with the specific column in Excel I am having issues with. ItemArray[5] is its DataType column Is it possible to create a custom TableSchema for the reader so when accessing the ExcelFiles, I can treat all cells as text instead of letting the system attempt to infer the datatype? I found some good info at this page: Tips for reading Excel spreadsheets using ADO.NET The main quirk about the ADO.NET interface is how datatypes are handled. (You'll notice I've been carefully avoiding the question of which datatypes are returned when reading the spreadsheet.) Are you ready for this? ADO.NET scans the first 8 rows of data, and based on that guesses the datatype for each column. Then it attempts to coerce all data from that column to that datatype, returning NULL whenever the coercion fails!   • How to mmap the stack for the clone() system call on linux?

    The clone() system call on Linux takes a parameter pointing to the stack for the new created thread to use. The obvious way to do this is to simply malloc some space and pass that, but then you have to be sure you've malloc'd as much stack space as that thread will ever use (hard to predict). I remembered that when using pthreads I didn't have to do this, so I was curious what it did instead. I came across this site which explains, "The best solution, used by the Linux pthreads implementation, is to use mmap to allocate memory, with flags specifying a region of memory which is allocated as it is used. This way, memory is allocated for the stack as it is needed, and a segmentation violation will occur if the system is unable to allocate additional memory." The only context I've ever heard mmap used in is for mapping files into memory, and indeed reading the mmap man page it takes a file descriptor. How can this be used for allocating a stack of dynamic length to give to clone()? Is that site just crazy? ;) In either case, doesn't the kernel need to know how to find a free bunch of memory for a new stack anyway, since that's something it has to do all the time as the user launches new processes? Why does a stack pointer even need to be specified in the first place if the kernel can already figure this out?

  • Looking for Recommendations on Version Control System with Intuitive (.NET) API?

    I'm working on a project which generates (composite) Microsoft Word documents which are comprised of one or more child documents. There are tens of thousands of permutations of the composite documents. Far too many for users to easily manage. Users will need to view/edit the child documents through the app which hides all of the nasty implementation details. A requirement of the system is that the child documents must be version controlled. That is what has been tripping me up. I've been torn between using an off-the-shelf solution or rolling my own. At a minimum, the system needs to support get latest, get specific version, add new, rename and possibly delete. I’ve whiteboarded it enough to realize it won’t be a trivial task to create my own. As far as commercial systems I have VSS and TFS at my disposal. I've played with the TFS API some, but it isn’t as intuitive or well documented as I had hoped. I'm not averse to an open source solution (e.g. SVN), but I have less familiarity with them. Which approach or tool would you recommend? Why? Do you have any links to API documentation you would recommend? Environment: C#, VS2008, SQL Server 2005/2008, low volume (a few hundred operations per day)
