• NSIS patching (multiple patches in one file)

  I'm able to generate patch files from one version to another using NSIS' Vpatch. Let's say I have mydll.dll version 1, and I have a patch to update it to version 2. Then I have a new version again, thus I generate another patch to update it to version 3. What bothers me though is, what if user cancels updating to version 2 and so forth. Then my latest version let's say is version 20. User decides to update to version 20. Is there a way to generate a patch that's like accumulative in nature? whereas user can jump from version any old version to the newest version (i.e ver 3 to ver 20) without passing through the versions in between? I've read this line in vpatch's documentation --- "if you want to be able to upgrade version 1 and 2 to version 3, you can put a 1 3 and 2 3 patch in one file." But how do I that? What if I alread have like 30 versions. Does that mean I have to create a patch whose arguments are old files(versions 1-29) and new file(version20)? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

• MSSQL in ASP.NET application getting unstable after a certain period

  Hello, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 application that I made to keep track of disruption reports about our public transport system. The architecture is pretty straight-forward; an MSSQL Express 2008 database, ADO.NET and a DataSet/DAL with a few methods to access the database. There is a set of .aspx pages for the UI in use by our dispatchers and on our public website, as well as a set of SOAP and REST webservices and an RSS feed. Everything worked just fine for more than a year, until two weeks ago. Now and then, it seems as the database enters an unstable mode, and the application starts responding something right, something wrong. The typical error is that apparently, an empty DataTable is returned to the public disruption overview or to the RSS generator. Thus, the user gets e.g. an empty GridView, but no exception is thrown AFAIK, and nothing is written to the Windows Application log. After a restart of the MSSQL Express service, the situation is back to normal. It has to be said that the situation first time appeared a few days after I made a new minor upgrade of the application. The RSS generator was slightly rewritten, and I added a WCF REST service. But the DAL and the database schema were untouched... Any hints of how we could keep the database stable? It is a bit annoying not to have a clue ;-)

• Using ZLib unit to compress files vs using ZipForge

  There are many questions on zipping in Delphi, anyway this is not a duplicate. I am using ZipForge for zip/unzip capability in my application. Currently I use 2 features of ZipForge: 1) zip and unzip (!) 2) password protect the archives Now I am removing the password from all the archives so I need only to zip and unzip files. I zip them just for minimizing bandwith when uploading/downloading files from the server. So my idea is to process all files once for unzipping them (with password) and rezipping them without password. I have nothing against ZipForge, anyway it is an extra component, every time I upgrade to a newest Delphi version I have to wait for the new IDE support and moreover the more components the more problems during the installation. So since what I do is very simple I'd like to replace ZipForge with 2 simple functinos using the ZLib unit. I found (and tested) the functions here on Torry's. What do you think of using Zlib unit? Do you see any potential problem that I would not have with ZipForge? Can you comment on speed?

• Lucene setboost doesn't work

  Hi all, OUr team just upgrade lucene from 2.3 to 3.0 and we are confused about the setboost and getboost of document. What we want is just set a boost for each document when add them into index, then when search it the documents in the response should have different order according to the boost I set. But it seems the order is not changed at all, even the boost of each document in the search response is still 1.0. Could some one give me some hit? • Character Set Issues when Upgrading from Symfony 2.0.* to Symfony 2.1.*?

  I have recently upgraded my staging test site to the latest version of Symfony and updated all the vendors using composer as instructed in the upgrade document that comes with the download. Everything has all updated fine, but I have noticed now that some bits of HTML are not displaying in the Twig templates. I did a comparison with the current live site and it appears to be a character set issue. As an example I had a drop down list that had the following value in: Kitchen Ducting > Ducting Kits > Ducting Kit 4” / 100mm In the updated site the drop-down list item just appeared blank. When I used Twig's raw function it then displayed the item again, but with the dreaded question mark in a black diamond. Kitchen Ducting > Ducting Kits > Ducting Kit 4? / 100mm Things that you should know that may help: The staging test site and live site are both on the same server. In my httpd.conf file I have 'AddDefaultCharset utf-8'. In my php.ini file I have 'default_charset = "utf-8"'. The HTML file served has the Content-Type meta tag 'content="text/html; charset=utf-8"' My database is InnoDB and uses 'utf8' as the default character set and 'utf8_general_ci' as default collation. All tables in the database also use the defaults. I looked into BOM with UTF8, but could not work out if that was a problem or not?

• GWT RPC and GoDaddy Shared Hosting

  Hi, I've deployed the sample Stock Watcher app to my GoDaddy Hosting site, and I get the error below. I've tried compiling the Project in Eclipse with JRE 1.5 because my Host is using jre 1.5. I think the issue is the "gwt-servlet.jar" is not compatible with jre 1.5. Can anyone confirm this. The project runs fine on my local machine using JRE 1.6. Unfortunately GoDaddy will not upgrade my shared hosting account jre to 1.6. • Specifying both multiple targets and multiple build files with ant or subant in 1.6

  I'm trying to unify a build process, running one build to get multiple packages. My first shot at this is just having a central build script call <ant or <subant on each project's build.xml file. I'm using Ant 1.6, and I've run into a funny problem: either I use the <ant task, and I can specify multiple targets but not multiple build files, or I use the <subant task, and I can specify multiple build files but not multiple targets. I realize there's a few solutions here already: Just upgrade to Ant 1.7 already; <antcall can do multiple targets there. Edit the separate project build files to have a variety of top-level targets, so I can call each individual file with just one target, and use <antcall. Copy-paste a lot of <ant tasks, with a little help from <macrodef to help the sanity. Is there something I've missed, that will allow me to do what I want from this single central build.xml without a) editing individual project files, b) writing lots of repetitive code, or c) upgrading Ant, and that d) doesn't require editing every time I add a new project?

• Access 2007 not allowing user to delete record in subform

  Good day... The root of my issue is that there's no context menu allowing the user to delete a row from a form. The "delete" button on the ribbon is also disabled. In Access 2003, apparently this function was available, but since our recent "upgrade" to 2007 (file is still in MDB format) it's no longer there. Please keep in mind I'm not an Access dev, nor did I create this app - I inherited support for it. ;) Now for the details, and what I've tried. The form in question is a subform on a larger form. I've tried turning "AllowDeletes" on on both forms. I've checked the toolbar and ribbon properties on the forms to see if they loaded some custom stuff, but no. I've tried changing the "record locks" to "on edit", no joy. I examined the query to see if it was "too complicated" to permit a delete - as far as I can tell, it's a very simple two (linked) table join. Compared to another form in this app that does permit row deletes, it has a much more complicated (multi-join, built on queries) query. Is there a resource that would describe the required conditions for allowing deletes? Thanks in advance...

• FogBugz On Demand + online source control at low/no cost?

  I have a project in the free hosted FogBugz On Demand (FOD) product right now. This is great for feature/issue tracking. But I've been working from a codebase that is solely on my development machine. I'd like to collaborate with another guy who is thousands of miles from me. So we need a source control solution (SCM)! I use Visual Studio (2005, but can upgrade to later versions as needed). I am aware that FogBugz can integrate with a number of source control systems. So now the question is: which online SCM products can integrate well with FOD and VS? And which ones do so well at low or no cost, for a small code repository. And where might I find a proven recipe for putting this together. I'm open to other solutions which provide the same functionality. Please don't suggest Trac - I regard it highly, but I want the features of FOB (especially the evidence based scheduling) in my issue tracking solution. So really, I need to combine FOB + VS + some online SCM product into a low or no cost solution for two coders to collaborate on.

• Needed environment for building gstreamer plugins in Windows

  Hi, I've been strugling for two weeks to create an environment for building a gstreamer plugin on windows (needed for a songbird addon). I've installed MSYS, MinGW and Cygwin, then installed GStreamer OSSBuild, and I also downloaded the sources for Songbird, which come with their own precompiled version of gstreamer. I was unable to run gst-inspect (or any other gstreamer applications) from the songbird sources and I figured I will settle for OSSBuild. When following the instructions for building a GST plugin (found here) through, cygwin will not recognize the OSSBuild and the build fails when running autogen, with the following error: checking for GST... no configure: error: You need to install or upgrade the GStreamer development packages on your system. On debian-based systems these are libgstreamer0.10-dev and libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev. on RPM-based systems gstreamer0.10-devel, libgstreamer0.10-devel or similar. The minimum version required is 0.10.16. configure failed I could also not use MSYS or MinGW as they are unable to run autogen at all. I understand that cygwin should have it's own gstreamer development packages but I couldn't find how to install them. My question: How do I install the gstreamer packages in cygwin or how do I build using cygwin with the OSSBuild dependencies? In short, how do I get an environment where I can build a gstreamer plugin under windows?

  Hi. I'm trying to upgrade my current application to use an abstract parent entity, with specialized sub entities. I've created a custom NSEntityMigrationPolicy, and in the mapping model I've set the Custom Policy to the name of my class. I've verified that the mapping model (cdm) is in the application bundle, but somehow it refuses to find it. I've also set breakpoints and NSLog() statements in the custom migration policy, and none of it runs, with or without NSInferMappingModelAutomaticallyOption Any hints as to why it seems unable to find the mapping model ?

• How do I set up FirePHP version 1.0?

  I love FirePHP and I've been using it for a while, but they've put out this massive upgrade and I'm completely flummoxed trying to get it to work. I think I'm copying the "Quick Start" code (kind of guessing at whatever changes are necessary for my server configuration), but for some reason, FirePHP's "primary" function, FirePHP::to() isn't doing anything. Can anyone please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?   I am trying to retrieve the ARPINSTALLLOCATION during the installation of a Major Upgrade version of the software. Following this info I managed to set the ARPINSTALLLOCATION to the custom path. However, retrieving it again isn't working. • Where should I store shared resources between LocalSystem and regular user with UAC?

  My application consists of two parts: A Windows Service running under the LocalSystem account and a client process running under the currently logged in regular user. I need to deploy the application across Windows versions from XP up to Win7. The client will retrieve files from the web and collect user data from the user. The service will construct files and data of it's own which the client needs to read. I'm trying to figure out the best place (registry or filesystem, or mix) to store all this. One file the client or service needs to be able to retrieve from the net is an update_patch executable which needs to run whenever an upgrade is available. I need to be sure the initial installer SETUP.EXE, and also the update_patch can figure out this ideal location and set a RegKey to be read later by both client and server telling them the magic location (The SETUP.EXE will run with elevated privileges since it needs to install the service) On my Win7 test system the service %APPDATA% points to: C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Roaming and the %APPDATA% of the client points to: C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming Interestingly Google Chrome stores everything (App and Data) in C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome Chrome runs pretty much in exactly the way I want my suite to run (able to silently update itself in the background) What I'm trying to avoid is nasty popups warning the user that the app wants to modify the system, and I want to avoid problems when VirtualStore doesn't exist because the user is running XP/2000/2003 or has UAC turned off. My target audience are non-tech-savvy general Windows users.

  Hi, Background - I need a framework/approach to managed database updates for a .NET Winforms app being deployed on users PC's via clickonce deploy. The app uses a sqlite database. Q1. What mechanism does Subsonic use to run such migrations on the local PC? e.g. would it be MSBuild Q2. If it does need a tool like how can my application robustly kick off MsBuild? i.e. how can it be sure what path it is installed, what if it is not installed, should I be including the MSBuild.exe in the clickonce package so that I know it is there for sure myself? Q3. Any other suggestions on how to use Subsonic in this specific use case? Q4. Any comments on whether MigratorDotNet would be a better fit? (if someone has had experience with both) Q5. Could I use subsonic's bare migration framework and just have a set of SQL files to do the upgrade/downgrade? i.e. just use the framework to check database version and which scripts to run etc?

• IIS Flash Remoting Request Limit introduced with Coldfusion 9

  Hi all We've just been our Coldfusion servers from Enterprise CF 8.01 to CF 9. They are running Win 2008. We ran into trouble on those servers that provide the Flash remoting back-end for a Flex application we provide. Once the CF 9 upgrade was complete we noticed that during busy times when many Flex clients were connecting, we appeared to have a hard limit of 25 Flash Remoting Requests running, despite having much higher limits (in fact 150) set in CF Admin. Initially we thought that this was an issue with the fact that Blaze DS was now bundled with CF 9 (rather than a separate install) so we decided to roll-back the CF 9 installation. This, unfortunately, didn't work and we were still stuck with out hard limit of 25 Flash Remoting requests. Then looking at IIS we noticed that the CF9 ISAPI filter was still installed (after we had ran the Web Service Configuration part of the install). That was removed and the CF 8 one was re-run and all of a sudden the Flash Remoting hard limit disappeared. So it seems that it might have had something to do with the wsconfig of CF 9 (C:\ColdFusion9\runtime\bin\wsconfig.exe) Has anyone else had this problem, or does anybody know of where these hard limits are configured in IIS? Any and all help appreciated!

  We have a client that has been configured to connect to an asmx service. We don't want to ask our customers to update their configuration, but we would like to upgrade our service to use WCF. Does anyone know if WCF supports this? If so, what would the configuration file look like?   Hey, does anyone know a package manager library for PHP (as e.g. apt or yum for linux distros) apart from PEAR? I'm working on a system which should include a package management system for module management. I managed to get a working solution using PEAR, but using the PEAR client for anything else than managing a PEAR installation is not really the optimal solution as it's not designed for that. I would have to modify/extend it (e.g. to implement actions on installation/upgrade or to move PEAR specific files like lockfiles away from the system root) and especially the CLI client code is quite messy and PHP4. So maybe someone has some suggestions for an alternative PEAR client library which is easy to use and extend (the server side has some nice implementations like Pirum and pearhub) for completely different package management systems written in PHP (ideally including dependency tracking and different channels) for some general ideas how to implement such a PM system (yes, I'm still tinkering with the idea of implementing such a system from scratch) I know that big systems like Magento and symfony use PEAR for their PM. Magento uses a hacked version of the original PEAR client (which I'd like to avoid), symfony's implementation seems quite integrated with the framework, but would be a good starting point to at least write the client from scratch. Anyway, if anybody has suggestions: please :)

• Problems using (building?) native gem extensions on OS X

  I am having trouble with some of my rubygems, in particular those that use native extensions. I am on a MacBookPro, with Snow Leopard. I have XCode 3.2.1 installed, with gcc 4.2.1. Ruby 1.8.6, because I'm lazy and a scaredy cat and don't want to upgrade yet. Ruby is running in 32-bit mode. I built this ruby from scratch when my MBP ran OSX 10.4. When I require one of the affected gems in irb, I get a Load Error for the gem extension's bundle file. For example, here's nokogigi dissing me: > require 'rubygems' = true > require 'nokogiri' LoadError: Failed to load /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.1/lib/nokogiri/nokogiri.bundle This is also happening with the Postgres pg and MongoDB mongo gems. My first thought was that the extensions must not be building right. But gem install wasn't throwing any errors. So I reinstalled with the verbose flag, hoping to see some helpful warnings. I've put the output in a Pastie, and the only warning I see is a consistent one about "passing argument n of ‘foo’ with different width due to prototype." I suspect that this might be an issue from upgrading to Snow Leopard, but I'm a little surprised to experience it now, since I've updated my XCode. Could it stem from running Ruby in 1.8.6? I'm embarrassed that I don't know quite enough about my Mac and OSX to know where to look next, so any guidance, even just a pointer to some document I couldn't find via Google, would be most welcome. • A simple way to put a UIImage in a UIButton

  I have a UIButton in my iPhone app. I set its size to 100x100. I have an image that is 400x200 that I wish to display in the button. The button STILL needs to stay at 100x100... and I want the image to downsize to fit... but keep the correct aspect ratio. I thought that's what "Aspect Fit" was used for. Do I include my image with setImage, or setBackgroundImage? Do I set AspectFit for the button? or the image? or the background image? (I need the smaller images to INCREASE in size. While larger images should DESCREASE in size. Always keeping the button at 100x100.) I've tried countless combinations of all of the above... and I just can't seem to get everything to work at the same time: Don't change the button's size of 100x100. Don't destroy the image's aspect ratio. Always increase small images to fit the button. Always decrease large images to fit the button. Never clip any of the image edges. Never require the "put UIButtons over all your UIimages" hack. Don't require everyone to upgrade to v4.2.1 just to use new framework methods. I see so many apps, with so many fully-working image-buttons... that I can't believe I can't figure out this very simple, very common thing. Ugh.

• I Cannot retrieve ARPINSTALLLOCATION so we know where to install a new version [WIX]

  I am trying to retrieve the ARPINSTALLLOCATION during the installation of a Major Upgrade version of the software. Following this info I managed to set the ARPINSTALLLOCATION to the custom path. However, retrieving it again isn't working. People recommend using maven, but id rather not try to learn how to use maven/install it if the jars are available somewhere for download. • Updating an application OTA

  I'm developing an application that will be available from a website (market probably as well). The problem I'm having at the moment is how to handle the updates to the app. I know how to check the version against the current one and I know if I need to update it. Question is...how? Is there a way I can download an APK from the website and start the install process? The user will have to confirm of course, but I just want to be able to start it for him.
