• Should I be worried about sending Apk to client before getting paid?

  I am working on an Android app for a client. The app is practically finished, and next week I'll have a meeting with the client to present it. He'll test everything, and upon approving it he will make the payment and I'll give him the source code and publish it on Google Play. Today he called me asking for the Apk so that he can start testing it. I am worried that if we don't close the deal (for one reason or another) he might get someone to reverse engineer the Apk and get my source code/app anyway, even if obfuscated with ProGuard (I never tried, but according to this SO thread it's not that difficult to reverse engineer an Apk). My question: Am I being paranoid here and should just send the client the Apk (cause perhaps the ProGuard obfuscation is enough to make the source code useless) , or are my worries reasonable and I should stick to getting paid before delivering anything?

  I want to restrict usage of unescaped ampersands in a particular input field. I'm having trouble getting a RegEx to kill usage of "&" unless followed by "amp;"...or perhaps just restrict usage of "& " (note the space). I tried to adapt the answer in this thread, but to no avail. Thanks. (FWIW, here's a RegEx I made to ensure that a filename field didn't contain restrited chars. and ended in .mp3. It works fine, but does it look efficient?)

  I'd like a delegate that calls a function in a different thread when it is invoked. Currently, I'm using the following implementation: delegate void someFunctionDelegate(); //... someFunctionDelegate callBackFunction = someForm.SomeFunction; someForm.Invoke(someFunctionDelegate); However, I'd like a more compact form, combining both the someForm instance and the SomeForm.SomeFunction member function. I'm thinking of something like this: var callBackFunction = new AsynchronousCrossThreadDelegate(someForm, SomeForm.SomeFunction); callBackFunction(); // Should call someForm.BeginInvoke(SomeForm.SomeFunction); Is there a way to do so in C#/.NET? • C# move file as soon as it becomes available.

  Hi, I need to accomplish the following task: Attempt to move a file. If file is locked schedule for moving as soon as it becomes available. I am using File.Move which is sufficient for my program. Now the problems are that: 1) I can't find a good way to check if the file I need to move is locked. I am catching System.IO.IOException but reading other posts around I discovered that the same exception may be thrown for different reasons as well. 2) Determining when the file gets unlocked. One way of doing this is probably using a timer/thread and checking the scheduled files lets say every 30 seconds and attempting to move them. But I hope there is a better way using FileSystemWatcher. This is a .net 3.5 winforms application. Any comments/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for attention.

  There is now a competition for creating a T-shirt design for useR2010. Someone proposed the idea to use R for creating the T-shirt image. Which leads me to my questions: What type of images do you think might be fitting for this? How would you suggest to use R to create the images ? Would anyone here want to have a go at it? (p.s: I understand this is not a pure "programming" question. Yet it involves R programming, the understanding of R aesthetics, and some caring for the R community. • Receive input over TCP/IP and use it to update HTML

  This has got to be a FAQ, so can someone please just direct me to a "network programming for dummies" URL? The server wants to push information to a client or broadcast to all, when an event happens - as opposed to the clients constantly polling the server "just in case". The client then updates a browser page display. How do I do that? (toldya it was a n00b question) Should I have a thread which receives info on a socket and then writes it to a database which the browser display (PHP) can process with an HTML refresh tag, or what? Sorry to sound so dumb.

  I need to increase the FD_SETSIZE value from 1024 to 4096. I know it'd be better to use poll()/epoll() but I want to understand what are pros/cons. The main question is: have I to recompile glibc? I read several thread where the change of .h after changing FD_SETSIZE works recompiling only the user application. Reading the glibc code (and the kernel too), actually it seems to me that if I want to use select(), FD_* macro and so on, I have to recompile all because the size of fd_set is changed. At this point I have to recompile all not only my application because if in the system there is an another "common" application that uses select and friends, I could have problem. Am I right?

  This is my first time using StackOverflow. • Allowing AsyncTask to Manipulate Values in Different Activity Classes

  Hi guys, This title may seem strange, so let me try to explain what I'm trying to do. I have several activity classes, each representing a different view in my application. My initial activity class gets loaded when the application launches. The user enters values and eventually a TCP socket is opened, and I then use AsyncTask to listen for and respond to messages from the server. I'd like for this AsyncTask class to essentially listen until the app is closed/error condition reached, and be able to update values in other activity classes after they are started. Does this make sense (it's been a long, frustrating night)? I know that static activity class references are bad practice, and touching the UI thread from other activities is bad as well, but I'm having trouble finding a clean solution to this problem. Maybe using AsyncTask is not the best approach here? Should I be using a service instead or something else entirely? Thanks in advance.

I wish to go through the database of Wikipedia (let's say the English one), and do statistics. For example, I am interested in how many active editors (which should be defined) Wikipedia had at each point of time (let's say in the last 2 years). I don't know how to build such a database, how to access it, how to know which types of data it has and so on. So my questions are: What tools do I need for this (besides basic R) ? MySQL on my computer? RODBC database connection? How do you start planning for such a project?

  I'm not looking for a way to associate values with a thread using the 'SetData' method. I need to store some kind of data that will only exist during the scope of a calling method, could be the immediate parent or any other call that is made down on the stack. For example: void SomeMethod() { string someInfo = "someInfo"; SomeOtherMethod(); object data = GetDataOnCurrentScope("someKey"); } void SomeOtherMethod() { SetDataOnParentScope("someKey", somevalue); } In this case both the 'someInfo' local variable and the data set with the "someKey" key will disapear after 'SomeMethod' returns. Is something like this possible? This may go against the rules of a stack, but who knows if someone has an idea...

• Can I have fixed typed ArrayList in C#, just like C++?

  I have an ArrayList which contains fixed type of objects. However everytime I need to extract an object a particular index, I need to typecast it to my user defined type from object type. Is there a way in C# to declare ArrayList of fixed types just like Java and C++, or is there a work around to avoid the typecasting everytime? Edit: I apologize I forgot mentioning that I require the datastructure to be thread-safe, which List is not. Otherwise I would have just used a normal Array. But I want to save myself from the effort of explicitly locking and unlocking while writing the array. So I thought of using ArrayList, synchronize it, but it requires typecasting every time.

• Asynch operation in WinForm app

  I have a WinForms app. that when a button is clicked retrieves a bunch of data from database formats it and displays it to the end user. The operation can take 10 - 30 seconds. I would like to display a message to the user in a Dialog just saying "Be patient the operation is running" while the operation is running and then close when the data is ready to be presented to the end user. What is the best way to do this, start a new thread, use a Delegate or something else?

  What happens if you call dispatcherOperation.Wait() on an operation that has already completed? Also, the docs say that it returns a DispatcherOperationStatus, but wouldn't that always be Completed since it (supposedly) doesn't return until it's done?   I'm surprised I can't find a clear answer to this. So, in jQuery, you can do this: $(someElements).fadeOut(1000); $(someElements).remove(); Which, will start a fadeOut animation, but before it finishes executing in the 1 second duration, the elements are removed from the DOM. But how is this possible? I keep reading the JavaScript is single threaded. ( Is javascript guaranteed to be single-threaded? ) This question is not "How do I fix this?" I know I can do either: $(someElements).fadeOut(1000).promise().done(function() { $(someElements).remove();});, or even better:$(someElements).fadeOut(1000, function() { $(this).remove(); } ); What I don't understand is how JavaScript runs in a "single thread" but I'm able to use these jQuery functions that execute asynchronously and visibly see the DOM change in different places at the same time. How does it work?

  I am developing a Windows Phone app where users can update a list. Each update, delete, add etc need to be stored in a database that sits behind a web service. As well as ensuring all the operations made on the phone end up in the cloud, I need to make sure the app is really responsive and the user doesn’t feel any lag time whatsoever. What’s the best design to use here? Each check box change, each text box edit fires a new thread to contact the web service? Locally store a list of things that need to be updated then send to the server in batch every so often (what about the back button)? Am I missing another even easier implementation? • custom Filter Android won't show me the results

  Hi, I have been implementing a class which class extends ArrayAdapter and implements Filterable. The filtering part (in the performFiltering method()) seems to go ok, it fills the FilterResults object just as expected. But then I think I'm not doing it right on how to publish the results, atm I have : protected void publishResults(CharSequence prefix, FilterResults results) { // NOTE: this function is *always* called from the UI thread. subItems = (Vector)results.values; notifyDataSetChanged(); } But this simply won't "populate" my List with the received data. So now my question is how do I populate my List with the received results ? Do I have to do that programmatically ?

• How to stop an activity with GL view. Application not responding

  I have an activity that I want to programmatically stop after some elapsed time. I have a GL view running. My understanding is that the GLSurfaceView.renderer is running in its own thread, so I created a handler instantiated from the activity. In the GLSurfaceView I post a message. The handler then attempts to stop the activity with the following: onStop(); finish(); The activity seems to close. However, if I try to restart the application, I get a blank screen, the phone is practically locked up and eventually I get a message that the activity in the application is not responding. I'm also getting geting a wake lock, ie PowerManager.newWakeLock(...). When I try to release it, I get an exception. Not sure if its the GL view of the wake lock which is causing me troubles. Any ideas appreciated.

• Apache Axis web service clients vs plain SOAP requests.

  I'm looking for the best way to consume a Java web service that returns rather large and complex objects. I am currently using Apache Axis clients generated from the wsdl, (using eclipse "generate web service client" tool). We have concerns about performance of this. The service proxy objects are not thread safe, and they are rather heavy to instantiate, 2-3 MB on the JVM. The other alternative is making HTTP connections and building a String SOAP requests. I would have to interpret the response, and build objects from the XML. Would this be a better alternative to the heavy axis objects? I searched for good reading on this, if any one had any links I would greatly appreciate it.
