  Hi I'm a web developer who writes most of the time rails applications. Next month I'm going to switch from my current VPS to linode. I'm wondering how much it would cost to properly set (or teach me how to do it) everything to get my app up and running. My requirements are probably: nginx/apache, REE/ruby, passenger, full blown php environment, system wide RVM, search engine such a sphinx, being able to perform cronjobs. I have some knowledge of unix and I was able to install everything I needed on my development system. However I had quite a few issues setting up everything on my production server.

• Access denied errors in windows server 2008 for system administrator

  Hello I've a HP Pavilion DV4 with windows Server 2008 R2 enterprise. My system is connected to a domain. I login using my domain account. I am the administrator for the local machine. But I'm getting access denied everywhere (file system, running commands, using visual studio..literally everywhere..) in my machine. What could be the problem? Any ideas? Please tell me if you need more information as I'm just a developer with less knowledge in system administration.

I want to automate provisioning of web/app/database servers going forward for my projects I manage a mixture of both Windows and Linux servers (VPS, cloud and dedicated) I've looked at investigated Chef/Puppet/Ansible briefly; and I am wanting to find something that: Is easy to learn and understand. I don't want to invest weeks into understanding a complicated piece of tech. Ideally does not require a server ("master server") to hold the configurations Supports provisioning of Windows and Linux servers Comes with suitable documentation to get started Does anyone have any advice on what tool is best suited?   I have the following Apache rewrite directives: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/proxy(/|$) [NC] RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (^|&)uri=(.*?)(&|$) [NC] RewriteRule .* /api/vs1.0/%2 [NC,L] And I'm trying out nginx, so trying to move the rewrites over. I came up with... rewrite ^/proxy(/|$) /api/vs1.0/$2 last; rewrite (^|&)uri=(.*?)(&|$) /api/vs1.0/$2 last; Which is probably grossly incorrect. I'm just a mere web developer, so I was wondering if anyone could lend a hand here. I would be much obliged. I see that I am ignoring the query string specification, but I'm thinking that it shouldn't matter. I only have a vague idea of what the original rewrite is accomplishing, so I haven't much hope here in coming up with something decent, despite reading the relevant documentation for both servers.

  I've created a simple web application, a self-contained tool with a user system. I host it publicly for everyone to use, but I've gotten some requests to allow companies to host the entire application privately on their internal systems. I have no idea what I'm doing - I have no experience with deployment or server stuff. I'm just some person who learned enough JS and PHP to make a tool for my own needs. The application runs with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. What's the best way to package my application to let others run it privately? I'm assuming there's better options than just sending them all the source code. I'd like to find a solution that is: Does not require support to set up (I'm just a single developer without much free time) Easy to configure Easy to update Does there exist some one-size-fits all thing that I can give to someone, they can install it, and bam, now when they go to http://myapplication/ on their intranet, it works?   I am getting the following error when attempting to activate the Sharepoint Server Publishing Infrastructure. There are only about 140 columns defined in the entire site collection. I had previously activated and subsequently deactivated this feature. I don't know whether this might be causing the problem. But I really have no idea. I am a developer and this is my first question on serverFault. Please be gentle. Error Message: Column Limit Exceeded. There are too many columns of the specified data type. • Can a RAID 4 disk setup crash if only 1 hard disk fails?

  I am a web developer. I have not much experience in hardware. For this reason, I use managed servers. This morning, one of the drives in our setup failed. However, the full site went down. I asked my web host what happened and he replied that the hard disk failed in such a way that the RAID controller couldn't work properly. The array was set up as RAID 4. Do you guys ever seen that before? Is it possible? Thanks for any help on this guys. I need to know if my web host is honest with me.

• Problem communicating with one machine in my domain

  Context: 3 HyperV guest images (DC, SQL, MOSS) 1 internal network 1 domain (PJM.COM) DC: 192.168.0.192 SQL: 192.168.0.153 MOSS:192.168.0.160 I am having communication problems from/to the MOSS machine from the other two. I removed the MOSS machine from the domain and cannot rejoin. When I ping the MOSS machine from DC, I get the following response: Pinging MOSS [192.168.0.152] Reply from 192.168.0.192 Destination host unreachable (4 times) When I ping the MOSS machine from SQL, I get the following response: Pinging MOSS [192.168.0.152] Reply from 192.168.0.153 Destination host unreachable (4 times) From the MOSS machine, I can ping the server names, however I cannot ping the FQDN. When I ping from the DC and SQL machines, I get IPv4 addresses. When I ping from the MOSS machine, I get IPv6 addresses. I'm a developer and don't know what steps to take to resolve this issue. Please help!?

  I'm setting up a database which needs to be needs to provide High Availabilty. My primary concern is high performance and robustness (I don't want something that will fail fast and badly). The database is accessed by the application at an average of 300 qps. It's will run on Xen VMs and it has some InnoDB tables as well as MyISAM tables. The VMs are connected via ethernet 100Mbit/s ethernet cables. Which of the two - MySQL replication or DRBD - would you recommend in such a situation? Or should I use DRBD to make the master database Highly Available and use MySQL replication on the slaves? I'm a developer so these things are all not so easy for me to make a sound judgement.

• Extensions disappear when I close and open Google Chrome

  I am running the latest version of Google Chrome 23.0.1271.97 (Official Build 171054) m on Windows 7. Any new extension I install simply disappears(not disabled, total disappearance) once I close and re-start google chrome. This is not happening to one of my old extension. It stays there across chrome re-starts. I tried everything google help suggested- I created new user profile by renaming the Defaults folder I checked for any permission change that the extensions might have undergone. This is not the case. I am not running in developer mode. This happens when I close ALL instances of google chrome. Even if one instance of chrome is running, this doesn't happen. But I cant have an instance of Google Chrome always running :( I even reported the issue to Google Chrome team to no avail and new.crbug.com is offline. And I skimmed through many threads opened for the same issue only to find souls like me. SE is my last resort :)

• Move /var directories to to /mnt on an EC2 instance

  I am trying to work on a standard configuration for a set of EC2 instances running ubuntu 12.04. These servers are going to be primarily web servers for a Ruby on Rails application. When you configure a new large instance, you are given a primary of 8GB and then ephemeral storage of 400 GB that is mounted to /mnt. It seems logical to me to move some directories that have a potential for growth off to the /mnt directory, I was specifically thinking of /var/www and /var/log. My question is two-fold: Is this a good idea or are there pitfalls that I cannot see? If this is a good idea, how should I go about configuring this. I do have the ability to configure new instances and down our old instances. My concern is over long term, doing this in such a way that it prevents downtime. I am a developer with some experience in devops, but mounting drives is something I have not faced before, so explicit directions would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi there I'm a developer looking at introducing ClickOnce deployment for an internal .NET Winforms application that will be distributed via the corporate network. Now I would like to deploy this application under the full trust model however in order for that to happen I need to sign the software with a certificate. I can do that with a "test" certificate that has no information of the publisher etc, however that means an extra step will occur on the users workstation where they will have to confirm that the software is OK. So what I want to know is. is there a way I can get my IT Infrastructure guys to create me a an "internal" certificate from the domains Certificate Authority, or do I have to go and pay for a certificate from somebody like VeriSign? • When should I upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)? [closed]

When 9.10 came out, I was using it with no adverse effects from about a month before release (iirc, first beta), initially as an upgrade but as a clean install later to ensure my system would be consistent with most other 9.10 systems. The last alpha of 10.04 came out last week, with another 2 weeks before beta. I'm quite eager to do it today, but obviously the usual "not for production systems" notice is still in place. When should I upgrade? Do I need to worry about software installed from source? (./configure, make, make install etc) Is the attraction of a non-brown theme really this tempting for you?

• Performance & Security Factors of Symbolic Links

  I am thinking about rolling out a very stripped down version of release management for some PHP apps I have running. Essentially the plan is to store each release in /home/release/1.x etc (exported from a tag in SVN) and then do a symlink to /live_folder and change the document root in the apache config. I don't have a problem with setting all this up (I've actually got it working at the moment), however I'm a developer with just basic knowledge of the server admin side of things. Is there anything I need to be aware of from a security or performance perspective when using this method of release management? Thanks

• Windows 8 Modern UI searching in files doesn't work

  I have a problem with my search in Windows 8. When I search through the Modern UI style (WinF) for files, it won't return a single result from none of my drives. Searching via Windows Explorer works fine. I had the same problem in Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but it worked in Developer Preview. And I looked on the net for other users with similar problems, but I haven't found anything. Is there someone who knows what the problem might be?

• Do all domains on the same shared hosting server have the same IP or ID

  Here's what I've got: siteA.com and siteB.com are hosted on hostgator. They're hosted on the same account of a shared hosting server (not VPS or dedicated). script.php is an external site that each of these 2 sites are accessing. I noticed that when siteA.com or siteB.com access the outside script.php, the script identifies them both as 1a.12.12ab.static.theplanet.com (apparently because hostgator uses theplanet.com servers). The fact that they're identified as the same value isn't surprising because after all they're hosted on the same account /home/user123/public_html. What I'm wondering about is how about other websites that are hosted on the same shared hosting server, but under other accounts. Basically other websites that are under another developer's control, but just happen to share the same hardware (hosting server). Do they also have the exact same identifier 1a.12.12ab.static.theplanet.com or that changes by account?

• Some html5 video content will not play in Chrome - except in Private Browsing Mode

  I have had this problem for a couple of years, probably due to the fact that all my settings get transferred when I log into Chrome: Most videos on the net play fine using Chrome, but on certain site none of the videos will play. This is not due to wrong codecs or something, because opening the same video using Chrome's Private Browsing Mode will play it just fine. Since most (all?) extensions are disabled when using Private Browsing Mode, I guessed the problem had to be found in my extensions, so I disabled all and also disabled developer mode. • Setting the server to look for index.php file by default

  I am a web developer and I've requested our Sys-Admin to setup a server for my team that will be used as a development environment. The PHP is running as a CGI. When i try to open http://myaddress/ I receive 403 Forbidden. When I try to open http://myaddress/index.php everything is fine. How do I set the server to look for index.php file by default? P.S The sysadmin is not currently here, so he cannot do it for me.

• How to set a low process priority for everything spawned from a command prompt in XP?

  As a developer, once or twice a week I run a full build on my XP dev machine. This will run at 100% cpu for 30 or 40 minutes, making my machine usless for anything other than basic browsing & email. Is there anyway I can specify that for a given process (i.e. a command prompt) it and any process spawned by it will hae a lower priority, say taking up no more than 60 - 70% of CPU, leaving my machine more usable. I don't mind the build talking 30 or 40% longer, if I still have use of my machine while it's running. Thanks BW P.S. I'd love to be able to throw more hardware at the problem, but that isn't under my control.

• Windows 8 Installation Fails

  I have the Windows 8 32-bit ISO which fails to install when booted from a USB flash drive. It copies the files, the boot loader installs, but the install hangs when I boot into Windows 8 for the first time--it simply keeps on spinning forever. The Windows 8 Release Preview does not work either. I did a VHD install of Windows 8 Developer Preview and it installed fine. Looking at the partition from Windows 7, I can see that the files are present. What could be the problem?

• Why hasn't anyone made a way for TimeMachine to wirelessly backup to Amazon S3?

  Seriously. I'm looking at you, Apple. If TimeMachine is supposed to be 'simple backup that just works' why is it impossible to backup into my S3 filespace? Why hasn't some 3rd party developer (JungleDrive???) made it so that TimeMachine will be OK with backing up to amazon s3 storage? It just seems like the most convenient, robust answer. I'd gladly pay the $20-25 a month for complete, unlosable backups that I can sync with wirelessly on a proper scheme.

• Ubuntu+Mono+Postgres+ASP.NET 4.0. No problem?

  Would this be ok? I'm an ASP.NET developer and I'm planning to build "portable" web app servers based on Atom D510 mini-ITX. I have ran Ubuntu 10 with MySQL along with a separate IIS machines (win 2k3, 2k8) before with no problems. But now I'm thinking of "packaging" a web/db server into one small, cheap machine. I thought of Ubuntu/Mono/Postgres/ASP.NET, that it would be a good idea but I'm not sure? I have not actually tried it yet. Your thoughts?
