• Recent 12.04 Upgrade Makes My System and Internet Run Extremely SLOW!

  I'm running a Dell Inspiron 1564 with Windows7/Ubuntu dual booting. I haven't logged into the Ubuntu OS partition for some time until recently (trying to force myself into a Linux environment to learn) and when I did, It asked me to upgrade to 12.04 and so I did, restarted and since, everything seems to run extremely slow (startup, opening applications, running applications, switching windows, etc., etc... Another thing is that the Internet cuts out intermittently on my browser. Some pages within my Firefox tabs I can access, some I cant. Almost always while running Skype or some other Internet using application. So I know that I'm getting Internet, I can chat with friends over Skype but certain pages wont load during my Skype calls; the pages just hang upon resfreshing... I can eventually get the page to load after an indefinite amount of waiting and refreshing but this is very annoying. I am extremely new to Linux so I apologize in advance for my absolute ignorance. I am willing to post whatever information you Linux gurus have me type into the terminal in hopes that you can help me =) Thanks in advance!

• Engineered Systems and PCI

  Oracle has a number of different engineered systems.  These are design to be highly integrated, optimized and secure systems.  The Exadata database engineered system and the Exalogic application engineered system are two good examples.  Often I am asked how these comply with different standards and regulations.  Exalogic is the Oracle engineered system that supports applications and the focus of today's blog.  First, we must recognize that as a collection of hardware and software, we cannot simply state that Exalogic is "compliant" with PCI DSS.  This is because Exalogic must be implemented within the context of one's existing IT infrastructure, the security features of that infrastructure, the governance framework that exists, security policies, operational procedures, and other factors.  What we can say though, is that Exalogic has been designed with various security capabilities that can be utilized to support compliance to PCI DSS as well as other standards and regulations (e.g., NIST and HIPAA).  Given that, Exalogic can be an excellant platform for running PCI related payment applications.  Coalfire Systems, a leading QSA in the US, has evaluated Exalogic against PCI DSS and supports this position.  Their evaluation can be found here: Exalogic and PCI Compliance. • What are some good tips for a developer trying to design a scalable MySQL database?

  As the question states, I am a developer, not a DBA. I have experience with designing good ER schemas and am fairly knowledgeable about normalization and good schema design. I have also worked with data warehouses that use dimensional modeling with fact tables and dim tables. However, all of the database-driven applications I've developed at previous jobs have been internal applications on the company's intranet, never receiving "real-world traffic". Furthermore, at previous jobs, I have always had a DBA or someone who knew much more than me about these things. At this new job I just started, I've been asked to develop a public-facing application with a MySQL backend and the data stored by this application is expected to grow very rapidly. Oh, and we don't have a DBA. Well, I guess I am the DBA. ;) As far as designing a database to be scalable, I don't even know where to start. Does anyone have any good tips or know of any good educational materials for a developer who has been sort of shoved into a DBA/database designer role and has been tasked with designing a scalable database to support an application like this? Have any other developers been through this sort of thing? What did you do to quickly become good at this role? I've found some good slides on the subject here but it's hard to glean details from slides. Wish I could've attended that guy's talk. I also found a good blog entry called 5 Ways to Boost MySQL Scalability which had some good information, though some of it was over my head. tl;dr I just want to make sure the database doesn't have to be completely redesigned when it scales up, and I'm looking for tips to get it right the first time. The answer I'm looking for is a "list of things every developer should know about making a scalable MySQL database so your application doesn't perform like crap when the data gets huge".

• Graceful logout in dwm

  I want dwm to close all windows gracefully when I press quit hotkey. I like Unity behaviour: it displays list of windows denying logout (for example, editors with unsaved changes) and do not logout before all issues are resolved and applications are closed. By default, dwm just end X session and all running applications are killed. I was thinking about writing a script that will retrieve list of all windows, gracefully close them and wait for their processes to finish. But I even don't know how to close windows. The only way I know is using wmctrl, and this utility doesn't work with dwm.

• Java application not starting in Tomcat, Plesk 9 server

  Hi I have a Plesk 9.3 CentOS 5 server on which I installed the addon to have Tomcat functions. One application I have uploaded appears in the Plesk Tomcat user panel but with a yellow exclamation mark and the error "Actual status of the application does not correspond to the status retrieved from the database". The app therefore does not run, while other uploaded test .war applications do. The server runs Tomcat tomcat5.5.23-0jpp.7.el5_2.1 which matches the requirements for the required app according the the company that made it. While searching for the solution I could find all 3 uploaded .war applications in /usr/share/tomcat5/psa-wars/domainhere.com/ but they do not seem uncompressed there even though 2 of them run fine. Not enough Tomcat / Java knowlede to go on... Any idea to help me here ? Best regards.

Now, if this prepaid mobile broadband can provide money in pesos and has internet connection, I think it can also use it for buying goods or applications or games via internet. i think its only need a software that can detect the sim card number and the money balance for transactions. Sorry for my bad english but I hope you got my point.

• Automatically detecting temperature sensors on startup (Ubuntu 10.10)

  I am very close to achieving my goal of setting up a CPU temperature graph that is displayed in the top panel of my desktop. I have the applet and have gotten it to graph temperatures, which appear to be being sensed correctly. However, my machine doesn't find its temperature sensors by default; I have to run sudo modprobe coretemp for the sensors command to work, then log off and back in before the graph applet starts displaying my temperatures. I am wondering if I can somehow tell the kernel to load the coretemp module on startup so I don't have to keep doing these extra steps. I have tried putting this command in my startup applications, but I think its need for root permission is keeping this from working. Is there a way to set up startup applications with root permission, or some other way to ensure that this module is loaded at startup? If anyone is curious, I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo G770 laptop with a Core i5 processor and the 2.6.35 kernel.

• Concurrent wireless and wired network

  Hi, I am concerned with maintaining a wireless and wired network connection on my laptop. Basically I can change the metric on each interface so that Windows prefers one connection over the other. I am wondering is following scenario possible.... Some applications uses the wireless while other applications use the wired... I want Internet Explorer (only) to use the wireless connection while Outlook and everything else uses the wired connection. Perhaps adding some lines to the routing table might work? - Adding the ip addresses of websites I want to view via the wireless connection? Many Thanks in advance for any replies!

• Safety concerns on allowing connections to MySQL with no password on localhost?

  In the case of a Linux system, is there any security concern to let MySQL users with standard privileges (that is, not the root users) connect to the database with no password from localhost? I think that enforcing a password even for localhost can add a layer of protection, since, with no password the database access would be compromised if the SSH access is itself compromised. Considering that, would it be less safe to allow no password connection to MySQL than having the same password for SSH and for MySQL? I don't know if that is to be taken into account, but we also use phpMyAdmin to let users administrate their own database. I am asking because I kinda dislike having to put our database passwords unencrypted in the source or configuration files of our applications, where they can easily be leaked unintentionally. Since our servers are configured to run our applications as the Linux user the application belongs to, I was considering allowing no password from localhost as a simple solution. So, would that be a very bad idea or not?

• Is it reasonable to require passwords when users sign into my application through social media accounts?

  I've built an application that requires users to authenticate with one or more social media accounts from either Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Edit Once the user has signed in, an 'identity' for them is maintained in the system, to which all content they create is associated. A user can associate one account from each of the supported providers with this identity. I'm concerned about how to protect potential users from connecting the wrong account to their identity in our application. /Edit There are two main scenarios that could happen: User has multiple accounts on one of the three providers, and is not logged into the one s/he desires. User comes to a public or shared computer, in which the previous user left themselves logged into one of the three providers. While I haven't encountered many examples of this myself, I'm considering requiring users to password authenticate with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn whenever they are signing into our application. Is that a reasonable approach, or are there reasons why many other sites and applications don't challenge users to provide a user name and password when authorizing applications to access their social media accounts? Thanks in advance! Edit A clarification, I'm not intending to store anyone's user name and password. Rather, when a user clicks the button to sign in, with Facebook as an example, I'm considering showing an "Is this you?" type window. The idea is that a user would respond to the challenge by either signing into Facebook on the account fetched from the oauth hash, or would sign into the correct account and the oauth callback would run with the new oauth hash data.

  Possible Duplicate: How to revert to GNOME Classic? I don't like unity so I tried Ubuntu Gnome Remix 12.10. But I feel disappointed too. - No right click on desktop. (I know there is a way to enable it). - No icon on desktop. - I want to have "applications", "palces", "systems" on top panel as before. It just takes much more steps to arrive where I want to go in default gnome 3 settings. - It seems to me that for some applications, when it is maximalized, there is no close buttons or "restore to previous size" button. In fact, it has no title bar in this case, so I can't drag the title bar to restore its previous size and move the window. So I got 3 questions here: (for those who like the way gnome work before) What difference between gnome2 and gnome3 that you prefer the way it works in gnome2? How do you change it to work in the gnome2 way? I don't like the appearance in gnome3. For those who have tried to make your gnome3 looks good, could you share how you customize your gnome3 appearance? (this is for chatting only, not a real question) Why all the main OS (Windows, Mac, Some Linux) want to integrate Desktop and Tablet with focus on Tablet? (Which means that when it is installed on a desktop, it still has tablet appearance, which makes things strange.) Do they think the personal desktop PC will become less and less?

• How to fix missing icons in the taskbar and start menu?

  I installed Visual Studio 2012 yesterday and during the install my path somehow got screwed up1. Since then, the icons for applications that are part of Windows are the default "unknown" icon, but other icons are fine. The applications that the shortcuts link to launch fine when the icons are clicked on. Taskbar: Start Menu: I have fixed my path, but the icons still show incorrectly. Any ideas on how to flush what appears to be a set of cached icons? 1 Something took a path of A;B;C;D; and turned it into A;B;C;D;A;B;C;D;E;F; - duplicating a large part of it to that point that no more characters were available to type in the edit box in system properties. This had the side-effect of Windows reporting that it couldn't find %windir%.

• List and kill running processes on Mac OS in Ctrl/Alt/Delete-like way?

  So, what do you do on a Mac when a process (as opposed to an application) is hogging CPU, swamping your machine, and you need to kill it? I know you can use top or open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and kill it from there. But what happens when the process is already using so much CPU that doing either of those tasks is impossible? On Windows, you can just do Ctrl/Alt/Delete and the process list will reliably open. So no matter how much your computer is thrashing, you always have access to the list of processes. On Mac OS, there's Cmd/Alt/Escape, which reliably shows running applications. Fine when it's an application causing the problem. But: what do you do if it's a process?

• Unloading uwsgi dynamic app

  I have a uWSGI setup where I run dynamic mode and add applications to it. All applications are working off the same codebase, but each have their own settings file. Its working beautifully. Say for instance, i want to change a setting for one app that has already been loaded. Is there a way I can get uwsgi to reload the app, rather than restarting the whole uwsgi server? In emperor mode I could just touch the config file. How do I achieve the equivalent result in dynamic mode?

• Project Showcase: SaaS Web Apps Hits a Home Run with New SCMS Database

  We love seeing projects from start to finish, and we’re happy to share the latest example with you. Who: SaaS Web Apps – they use Software as a Service to create web applications that look and feel like desktop applications. What: SaaS Web Apps needed to build a Sports Contract Management System (SCMS) for one of its customers, Premier Stinson Sports. Why: The SCMS database is used for collecting, analyzing and recording college coach and athletic directors’ employment and contract data. The Challenge: Premier Stinson Sports works with a number of partners, each with its own needs and unique requirements. For example, USA Today uses the system to provide cutting edge news analysis while The National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School uses it to for the latest sports contract data and student analysis. In addition, the system needed to be secure due to the sensitivity of the data; it was essential that the user security and permissions be easily configurable. As always, performance was a key factor, especially with the intense reporting and analytical capabilities for this project. Because of this, most of the processing had to be done on a dedicated server but the project called for the richness and responsiveness of a desktop application. The Solution: To execute the project, SaaS Web Apps used APS.Net-based Visual WebGui from Gizmox, combined with SQL Server 2008 and SQL Reporting Services. This combination resulted in a quick deployment for SaaS Web Apps’ customers. The Result: The completed project gave each partner the scalability and availability of a web application with the performance and security of a desktop application. As an example, USA Today pulls data from this database to give readers the latest sports stats – Salary analysis of 2010 Football Bowl Subdivision Coaches. They Listened to Feedback while Keeping to their Plans I am one of the people in the “bring back the start menu” camp. I want my start menu. I *like* my start menu. Microsoft heard that and put it back, fantastic. But they implemented it in a way that still pushes the Windows 8 UI – and I’m actually pretty happy with it. When you hit the Start menu, you get the live-tiles displayed overlaying the desktop. But you can also swipe from the bottom to get the “all-applications” view. This, in essense, is really what those that like the Start Menu want. I believe it was mentioned that you can configure the all-applications view to be the default. They’re Committed to Improving Windows 8 The commitment to rapid deployments Ballmer talked about is crucial to Windows 8’s success. They need to keep it evolving quickly to maintain the interest of users and developers. I think the little improvements they showed are excellent (hands-free mode, multi window docking, better multi-monitor support, new developer controls, etc.). Hardware Vendors are Committed to Windows 8 They showed off a number of new hardware products (Windows 8 and Windows Phone). The Surface’s introduction to the market has done nothing to dissuade their hardware partners. Bing as a Platform is Huge for Developers!!! This was the biggest take-away from the keynote! What the team is doing with Bing not as a search engine but as a developer API is very impressive! I’m going to be diving into this over the rest of Build so watch more blog posts coming on it. • How to mount a network drive?

  Ok so I'm trying to set-up a home file server. I'm thinking about just setting it up as an FTP server, no particular reason other than I'm familiar with FTP and samba tends to be very frustrating. Basically the set-up I'm going for, is to be-able to create multiple user accounts for the server and restrict or allow access to specific folders on each user. FTP is the only way (that I know of) to accomplish a set-up like that. My question is how can I mount an FTP server as a drive in Ubuntu so that all my applications can access it just like any other driver or folder. An example would be downloading 12.10 via torrent when it comes out, I would like to be able to tell transmission to just download the file straight to my ftp server. I know how to do this in Windows, its actually very easy. But I cant figure it out in Ubuntu. I have tried using the "connect to server" option in nautilus, and it works, but it doesn’t give me the result I want, most applications don’t see the folder, while others can. Also I am open to options other than FTP if anyone has any suggestions. I've looked into FreeNAS but that doesn’t seem to allow me to control the user accounts the way I want to. Then after all is said and done I would still need a way to mount the shares as a drive in Ubuntu. The ability to mount network drives in windows is one of my favourite features, but seeing how Ubuntu is now my daily OS and has been for about 4 years, I really need a way to accomplish the same thing in Ubuntu. Also a GUI would be preferable, seeing as there will be multiple people using this server, I would like it to be as easy as possible. EDIT: this link here seems to be almost exactly what I'm wanting to do, if I could find a GUI that can do this ill be almost set. then I would just need to find a way to hide specific folders from certain users.
