• java/swing: Shape questions: serializing and combining

  I have two questions about java.awt.Shape. Suppose I have two Shapes, shape1 and shape2. How can I serialize them in some way so I can save the information to a file and later recreate it on another computer? (Shape is not Serializable but it does have the getPathIterator() method which seems like you could get the information out but it would be kind of a drag + I'm not sure how to reconstruct a Shape object afterwards.) How can I combine them into a new Shape so that they form a joint boundary? (e.g. if shape1 is a large square and shape2 is a small circle inside the square, I want the combined shape to be a large square with a small circular hole)

• Why are the colors worse on Ubuntu 12.04 than on Windows 7 on my Sony Vaio E-Series?

  The colours look "lacking" and ever slightly blueish and rather washed-out and lacking in dimension. Graphics are ok - this page for example looks fine - but if I view something like a news site with high quality photos, the experience is not optimal and is noticeably inferior to Windows 7. Oddly, when I install Ubuntu as a VM on VirtualBox in Windows, the colours look as I expect them to. It's only on my dual-boot version of Ubuntu that they look wrong (not Wubi, although a previous Wubi-based installation had the same problem). Now, I have the proprietary ATI driver and I can use amdcccle to get the colours closer to what they should be, but I can't seem to do anything about colour depth. The depth settings in Xorg are all 24. I tried changing all three mentions of 24 to 32 but was forced into safety mode. Fortunately, I remembered where I'd been tinkering and got the file set back to 24.

• Question about "Link Map" output and "Assume" directive of MASM assembler.

  I am new to MASM. So the questions may be quite basic. When I am using the MASM assembler, there's an output file called "Link Map". Its content is composed of the starting offset and length of various segments, such as Data segment, Code segment and Stack segment. I am wondering that, where are these information describing? Are they talking about how various segments are located within an EXE file or, how segments are located within memory after the EXE file being loaded into memory by a program loader? BTW: What does the "Assume" directive do? My understanding is that it tell the assembler to emit some information into the exe file header so the program loader could use it to set DS, CS, SS, ES register accordingly. Am I right on this? • design time usercontrols - I can't see anything!

  newbie question, please forgive... I'm developing a Wpf UserControl that will eventually be bound to a business object. The usercontrol is little more than a series of laid out TextBlocks, and perhaps (later) an image or two. As I'm laying out the usercontrol, I can put dummy text into all the TextBlocks so I can see what the usercontrol will look like, but as soon as I change the text property to contain the Binding information: <TextBlock Margin="0,12.8,42,0" Name="lblLastName" FontSize="8" Height="19" VerticalAlignment="Top" Text="{Binding Mode=OneWay, Path=LastName}"/> Then I can no longer see the textbox, or any "placeholder" text. This makes it very difficult to adjust the location and sizes of all the controls on the UserControl. In WinFormas programming, you could set binding information independently of the Text property, so you could at least see the Placeholder text during design time development. It's going to be pretty hard to visually arrange a bunch of invisible TextBlocks! What's the standard solution for this?

The hashes contain the following information: { :column => "", :value => "", :operator => "", # Such as: =, !=, <, >, etc. :and_or => "", # Two possible values: "and" and "or" } How can I loop through this array and use the information in these hashes to make an ActiveRecord WHERE query?

• ASP.NET 2.0 files work in one folder, but NOT in another

  I am about to leap of a building. I have created an app for a client and all the files are in a folder on their D drive. Now it is time to go production, so I copied all my files and folders to their excisting classic asp folder on the same drive. BUT NOTHING WORKS. The only difference I can see is that DEV does not require HTTPS like the production site. I also made sure all the permissions are the same on both folder. I made sure that the GAC has read rights using the aspnet_regiis tool. I am at the end of my debug knowlegde, could someone please help me out. • Create a Font using strings pulled from a string table.

  I am writing a tool to create an otf or ttc with only characters defined in our localized string table, so we can cut down memory usage. I already have the information for the Japanese characters we are using but I am unable to find an example of creating a new font based around these characters. Does anyone know of a good example or even the interface I can access to do this? I am working in C# with .NET 3.5. I am looking into Volt and TTOasm from Microsoft, but I am not sure if they will do exactly what I need. Any information is appreciated. Thanks, Matt Smith

  Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has any idea how I can add Content Controls to a Word Document (Office 2007) from the Document Task/Action Pane via C#. The goal is the following: I want to have categorized information in the Task/Action Pane and have the user fill out the info there. Once they have filled out that information they'll click on a button and it will insert content Controls into the Word Document that has that Data. The reason I want to use Content Controls is because the data will be bound to a database. Is this possible? I would like links that do this without WordProcessingML or OpenXML. There has to be a way to do this via server side code and such that doesn't require long blocks of ,, etc. Thanks!

• Best way to encrypt certain fiels in SQL Server 2008?

  I'm writing a .net web app that will read and write information to a SQL 2008 backend database. Some of this information will be highly confidential in nature so I want to encrypt certain data elements. I dont want to use TDE or any full-database encryption for performance reasons. My main concern is protecting this sensitive data as a last resort against a SQL injection or even a database server compromise. My question is what is the best way to do this to preserve performance? Is it faster to use the SQL2008 encryption functions such as EncryptByKey, or would it be faster to encrypt and decrypt the data in the .NET web app itself using a symmetric key stored in the secure web.config and store the encrypted values in the DB?

• Can not print after upgrading from 12.x to 14.04

  After upgrading from V12.04 to V14.04 I am not able to print. I am using an HP LaserJet 400 M451dn. The printer troubleshooter told me that there is no solution to the problem.   Has anybody some information about accessing Lotus Domino server to fetch entire mail contents by http(s) requests from php linux server? The article by Andrei Kouvchinnikov describes well how to fetch message list in notes mail folders; after obtaining session id during login one can for example select top 100 messages by calling: https://your.server.domain/mail_db/mailbox.nsf/($Inbox)?ReadViewEntries&Start=1&Count=100 And this works perfectly. The problem arises when I am trying to get message contents (0A1DA5EEB7B65277C12576F50055D811 is an example message unique Id): https://your.server.domain/mail_db/mailbox.nsf/($Inbox)/0A1DA5EEB7B65277C12576F50055D811/?OpenDocument Such request in IE shows frameset with data hard to parse, in less common browsers like Opera it informs about unsupported browser. Ideally if it is possible to fetch notes message contents and all attachments by requesting it in the url, has anybody some information what request would it be? • How can I record an OpenGL game in Ubuntu?

  I would like to create a short clip of me playing Minecraft, an OpenGL game. The usual screencast recorders do not properly record OpenGL. What kind of software is available for this purpose? My experience with the software in the similar (but no longer duplicate) question: kazam: very low framerate despite setting to 60 FPS, no sound, unity menubar constantly flashing through the fullscreen window. RecordMyDesktop: max framerate setting is 50 FPS, but the video becomes extremely fast if not using the default 15 FPS. xvidcap: not available on 12.04 tibesti: not available on 12.04 wink: does not run ffmpeg: very low quality video and no sound with the recommended settings, might be tunable though (no gui unfortunately). kdenlive: uses recordmydesktop, and the recorded clip becomes corrupted aconv: video sped up, often broken image, no sound

Here's the process we use: HR Interview on phone - Involves asking basic behaviorial and tech questions Online test - Involves a 30 minute technical test Technical Phone interview - A 60 minute interview by a developer Onsite Interview - A 60-90 minute interview by several senior developers Although this process has been working, we've been spending way too much time on interviews. • What a week! Oracle OpenWorld & Maria Bartiromo (CNBC)

  It's been a week since the end of Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne and both events were a huge success! We had many announcements including Oracle ADF Mobile, Oracle ADF Essentials, Oracle Developer Cloud Service and tons more.  Above is a picture I snapped of Maria Bartiromo from CNBC, who was there to interview Larry Ellison and Mark Hurd.  The stage was right in the midst of the booths that showcased new products, at Moscone North.  She's such a pro. With all the noise and people milling around gawking and taking pictures (myself included) she was solid & composed.   Her level of focus and the production quality of the show is impressive. She later stopped by for a demo of OEPE's  new support for Oracle ADF as well as Oracle Developer Cloud Service. She seemed impressed too. ;-)

  While building an ecommerce platform I have run into design problems. I'm working with the built-in CodeIgniter's cart class. It stores all the cart information in session. Let say that cart has already been filled with products and user clicks checkout. When should I store order in database? Just after that click or after several steps of gathering information and stoing it in session? How to deal with additional features like different shipping methods? Should I add it to the basket first and get additional (gift address) to session? I dont want to store it in database because of the relation between gift address and order is needed and since I dont know what's the ID of the order. I'm puzzled :) Additionally I think its crucial to keep cart aware of shipping methods and additional bought services (by selecting gift address there is an extra fee) because the cart content is just like an reciept? In brief, what is the best practice to process checkout?

• How could I get informations about the SIM card on Windows CE

  Hello, I am using a device running on WindowsCE 5.00. I cannot connect the GPRS, there is an error message telling that the port cannot be opened and may be in use by another application. I am not sure but I think the port it is talking about is a comp port to the SIM card that cannot be opened because the SIM doesn't work anymore. To tell the truth, it is likely that one of my coworker did lock the SIM and kept his mouth shut ... How could I get any information about the SIM on Windows CE ? I am new at this and Windows CE is not really user friendly ... I have been strongly searching this on internet but didn't find anything. Any kind of information will be welcomed. Thanks,
