  • Ubuntu - Black Screen After Suspend

    - by EssAm
I used Ubuntu with no problems and I upgraded to 11.10 and everything was fine. But when I did my first suspend I was not able to boot again, all I got was a black screen no bios screen, nothing just blank, I tried doing hard reset but when I power on again same happens. I tried ctrl+alt+delete F1-F12 but i think the keyboard is not working, also tried booting from CD but all I got was blank screen, the hard disk light is not blinking at all so i'm assuming it's not trying to boot. My laptop is Toshiba satellite with ATI Radeon graphics. Hibernate was working fine though. I searched the net for solutions but with no luck. Any ideas?

  • .NET development on a Retina MacBook Pro with Windows 8

    - by Jeff
I remember sitting in Building 5 at Microsoft with some of my coworkers, when one of them came in with a shiny new 11” MacBook Air. It was nearly two years ago, and we found it pretty odd that the OEM’s building Windows machines sucked at industrial design in a way that defied logic. While Dell and HP were in a race to the bottom building commodity crap, Apple was staying out of the low-end market completely, and focusing on better design. In the process, they managed to build machines people actually wanted, and maintain an insanely high margin in the process. I stopped buying the commodity crap and custom builds in 2006, when Apple went Intel. As a .NET guy, I was still in it for Microsoft’s stack of development tools, which I found awesome, but had back to back crappy laptops from HP and Dell. After that original 15” MacBook Pro, I also had a Mac Pro tower (that I sold after three years for $1,500!), a 27” iMac, and my favorite, a 17” MacBook Pro (the unibody style) with an SSD added from OWC. The 17” was a little much to carry around because it was heavy, but it sure was nice getting as much as eight hours of battery life, and the screen was amazing. When the rumors started about a 15” model with a “retina” screen inspired by the Air, I made up my mind I wanted one, and ordered it the day it came out. I sold my 17”, after three years, for $750 to a friend who is really enjoying it. I got the base model with the upgrade to 16 gigs of RAM. It feels solid for being so thin, and if you’ve used the third generation iPad or the newer iPhone, you’ll be just as thrilled with the screen resolution. I’m typically getting just over six hours of battery life while running a VM, but Parallels 8 allegedly makes some power improvements, so we’ll see what happens. (It was just released today.) The nice thing about VM’s are that you can run more than one at a time. Primarily I run the Windows 8 VM with four cores (the laptop is quad-core, but has 8 logical cores due to hyperthreading or whatever Intel calls it) and 8 gigs of RAM. I also have a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM I spin up when I need to test stuff in a “real” server environment, and I give it two cores and 4 gigs of RAM. The Windows 8 VM spins up in about 8 seconds. Visual Studio 2012 takes a few more seconds, but count part of that as the “ReSharper tax” as it does its startup magic. The real beauty, the thing I looked most forward to, is that beautifully crisp C# text. Consolas has never looked as good as it does at 10pt. as it does on this display. You know how it looks great at 80pt. when conference speakers demo stuff on a projector? Think that sharpness, only tiny. It’s just gorgeous. Beyond that, everything is just so responsive and fast. Builds of large projects happen in seconds, hundreds of unit tests run in seconds… you just don’t spend a lot of time waiting for stuff. It’s kind of painful to go back to my 27” iMac (which would be better if I put an SSD in it before its third birthday). Are there negatives? A few minor issues, yes. As is the case with OS X, not everything scales right. You’ll see some weirdness at times with splash screens and icons and such. Chrome’s text rendering (in Windows) is apparently not aware of how to deal with higher DPI’s, so text is fuzzy (the OS X version is super sharp, however). You’ll also have to do some fiddling with keyboard settings to use the Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts. Overall, it’s as close to a no-compromise development experience as I’ve ever had. I’m not even going to bother with Boot Camp because the VM route already exceeds my expectations. You definitely get what you pay for. If this one also lasts three years and I can turn around and sell it, it’s worth it for something I use every day.

  • What's the story with TRIM support?

    - by Kent Boogaart
The situation with TRIM in Ubuntu has me utterly confused. I don't know whether I need to manually run it or not. Sources I've found are disparate and unclear. I have Ubuntu 10.04 with latest updates (including kernel 2.6.32-26). I have an Intel X-25M drive with latest firmware, and it is formatted as ext4. So, does TRIM support run automatically? If not, how do I check if I need to run it, and then how do I run it if necessary?

  • Why did Ubuntu and Windows start hanging mysteriously after I took a vacation?

    - by Ashrey Goel
I installed Ubuntu alongside my Windows 7, after partitioning my HDD using Easeus partitioning manager. It was working perfectly, no problems, no data lost or corruption. Then I went away for 2 days and in my absence I don't know what happened in that period, now both Windows 7 and Ubuntu keep hanging continuously, like when you paint and change a brush it'll hang, I mean on very simple commands and I know my computer does not hang on such petty things. I use it for developing music and the specification are: Model: DELL-XPS Processor: Intel i5, 2.53 GHz RAM/Memory: 4GB Hard disk size: 500GB HDD Windows 7 partition: 417 GB Ubuntu Partition: 50 GB Please Help.

  • Grub-Efi wrong resolution

    - by Nikki Kononov
My question, as it comes from the title, related to grub, but it's a different thing. I re-installed Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 in UEFI mode (before that I was using normal BIOS) and everything went perfectly fine. Both systems load as they should but there is one thing that keeps bothering me. The problem is before I installed both systems in UEFI I used to boot in both system using common grub (non-uefi) and resolution in this grub was correct (which is 1366x768). Right now with grub-efi I have wrong resolution (which is seems to be 640x480). So my question is can can I safely set grub-resolution using grub config files or issue is related to something else? (for instance graphics card). I am using Ubuntu 12.10 Intel HD 3000 + Nvidia GT 540M Optimus (I am using bumblebee) Kernel 3.5.0-19-generic all updates installed! I also added ubuntu x-swat ppa for drivers. Thank you for your help!

  • Overheating on Dell Studio XPS 1645

    - by pjtatlow
So I was wondering if anyone else has come upon this problem, and/or has come up with a solution. When I use my Ubuntu partition, my computer becomes extremely hot, and the fan runs very noisily for a very long time. If I reboot into windows while this is happening, my computer actually begins to cool down while doing the exact same tasks. Thinking this might just be a bug with Ubuntu, I installed fedora on another partition, and the same problem occurs. Is this a problem with the kernel? Cpufreq tells me that my CPU is running at 933 MHz out of a possible 1.6 GHz from my Intel Core i7 CPU Q70. For anyone who wants more information, I have 8 GB of memory, and an ATI Mobility Raedon HD 5730 Graphics Card. I'm open to any ideas anyone might have. Thanks in advance!

  • I need acpi=off to boot, but this seems to disable wifi

    - by TheExp3rt
To boot my computer, I have to use acpi=off in kernel options. Doing this apparently causes my wifi adapter to be switched off and prevents my mouse and USB keyboard to not work. If I change acpi=off to nomodeset, it fixes these problems. But then it sets my computer at a lower resolution. I am currently running Kubuntu 13.10, although none of the updates, starting from 12.04, changed the need for acpi=off. I assume I need acpi=off in because I have an oldish computer with an intel motherboard How can I boot without acpi=off? • OpenGL (glx) not working with ubuntu 12.10

    - by user26766
    It all started when I installed nvidia's own (download from website) driver. Uninstalling it and reverting back to nvidia-current didn't solve the problem, so I have been playing with this for a while. It seems glx support is missing, and my intel graphics is not responding. gnome loads only in fallback mode. Here are some outputs: glxinfo name of display: :0.0 Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig glxgears Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual optirun glxgears works fine lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 540M] (rev ff) Here's the content of log file when just after running glxinfo: less /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep gl [ 112.156] (II) LoadModule: "glx" [ 112.157] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so [ 112.157] (II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation" [ 112.157] (II) UnloadModule: "glx" [ 112.157] (II) Unloading glx [ 112.157] (EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module requirement mismatch, 0) Some more info... lsmod Module Size Used by bbswitch 13612 0 pci_stub 12623 1 vboxpci 23195 0 vboxnetadp 25671 0 vboxnetflt 23480 0 vboxdrv 320372 3 vboxpci,vboxnetadp,vboxnetflt parport_pc 32689 0 ppdev 17074 0 bnep 18141 2 rfcomm 46620 12 binfmt_misc 17501 1 snd_hda_codec_hdmi 32049 1 snd_hda_codec_realtek 78147 1 joydev 17458 0 uvcvideo 76750 0 videobuf2_core 32852 1 uvcvideo videodev 120310 2 uvcvideo,videobuf2_core videobuf2_vmalloc 12861 1 uvcvideo videobuf2_memops 13405 1 videobuf2_vmalloc snd_hda_intel 33492 3 coretemp 13401 0 kvm_intel 132760 0 arc4 12530 2 snd_hda_codec 134213 3 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel kvm 414111 1 kvm_intel iwlwifi 386837 0 i915 520799 2 snd_hwdep 17699 1 snd_hda_codec snd_pcm 96668 3 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec psmouse 100389 0 drm_kms_helper 49113 1 i915 ghash_clmulni_intel 13221 0 snd_seq_midi 13325 0 snd_rawmidi 30513 1 snd_seq_midi btusb 22475 0 drm 288436 3 i915,drm_kms_helper serio_raw 13216 0 snd_seq_midi_event 14900 1 snd_seq_midi snd_seq 61555 2 snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event mac80211 535936 1 iwlwifi bluetooth 209249 22 bnep,rfcomm,btusb snd_timer 29426 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq snd_seq_device 14498 3 snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq snd 78921 16 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device cfg80211 206797 2 iwlwifi,mac80211 aesni_intel 51038 1 cryptd 20404 2 ghash_clmulni_intel,aesni_intel aes_x86_64 17256 1 aesni_intel dell_wmi 12682 0 sparse_keymap 13891 1 dell_wmi dcdbas 14439 0 i2c_algo_bit 13414 1 i915 microcode 22804 0 lpc_ich 17062 0 soundcore 15048 1 snd snd_page_alloc 18485 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm video 19391 1 i915 mac_hid 13206 0 wmi 19071 1 dell_wmi mei 40691 0 lp 17760 0 parport 46346 3 parport_pc,ppdev,lp ahci 25721 3 libahci 31192 1 ahci atl1c 41102 0 how can I fix this? any ideas? However I didn't find any obvious link to /lib/nvidia-current in /etc/ld.so.conf (where the directories containing the shared libraries are listed). I don't know if there's anything missing or if this is normal. thanks, UPDATE: The problem was solved by updating to Ubuntu 13.04. It seems bumblebee was to blame, but I'm not sure what was going wrong...

  • Screen split oddly when OS is installed from a Live CD

    - by Brian
Never used Linux before but I decided I want to start somewhere and Ubuntu seemed like the right place to start. I burned the 64bit version ISO onto a CD and installed it onto a fresh new hard drive I have. The Live CD works and the Live Distro thing works great. However when I attempt to install it, the screen splits oddly in a way where part of the right is on the left. Furthermore, after attempting to log in, the GUI doesn't show up and the computer would freeze and stay that way. However you can still move the cursor. I can't really get in or do anything (possibly because I don't know how) and tinker around since I am not too tech savvy. But I can follow instructions. Graphics Card Radeon hd 6670 I just tried the install with windows thing. There was the exact same problem.

  • Educause Top-Ten IT Issues - the most change in a decade or more

    - by user739873
The Education IT Issue Panel has released the 2012 top-ten issues facing higher education IT leadership, and instead of the customary reshuffling of the same deck, the issues reflect much of the tumult and dynamism facing higher education generally.  I find it interesting (and encouraging) that at the top of this year's list is "Updating IT Professionals' Skills and Roles to Accommodate Emerging Technologies and Changing IT Management and Service Delivery Models."  This reflects, in my view, the realization that higher education IT must change in order to fully realize the potential for transforming the institution, and therefore it's people must learn new skills, understand and accept new ways of solving problems, and not be tied down by past practices or institutional inertia. What follows in the remaining 9 top issues all speak, in some form or fashion, to the need for dramatic change, but not just in the areas of "funding IT" (code for cost containment or reduction), but rather the need to increase effectiveness and efficiency of the institution through the use of technology—leveraging the wave of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) to the institution's advantage, rather than viewing it as a threat and a problem to be contained. Although it's #10 of 10, IT Governance (and establishment and implementation of the governance model throughout the institution) is key to effectively acting upon many of the preceding issues in this year's list.  In the majority of cases, technology exists to meet the needs and requirements to effectively address many of the challenges outlined in top-ten issues list. Which brings me to my next point. Although I try not to sound too much like an Oracle commercial in these (all too infrequent) blog posts, I can't help but point out how much confluence there is between several of the top issues this year and what my colleagues and I have been evangelizing for some time. Starting from the bottom of the list up: 1) I'm gratified that research and the IT challenges it presents has made the cut.  Big Data (or Large Data as it's phased in the report) is rapidly going to overwhelm much of what exists today even at our most prepared and well-equipped research universities.  Combine large data with the significantly more stringent requirements around data preservation, archiving, sharing, curation, etc. coming from granting agencies like NSF, and you have the brewing storm that could result in a lot of "one-off" solutions to a problem that could very well be addressed collectively and "at scale."   2) Transformative effects of IT – while I see more and more examples of this, there is still much more that can be achieved. My experience tells me that culture (as the report indicates or at least poses the question) gets in the way more than technology not being up to task.  We spend too much time on "context" and not "core," and get lost in the weeds on the journey to truly transforming the institution with technology. 3) Analytics as a key element in improving various institutional outcomes.  In our work around Student Success, we see predictive "academic" analytics as essential to getting in front of the Student Success issue, regardless of how an institution or collections of institutions defines success.  Analytics must be part of the fabric of the key academic enterprise applications, not a bolt-on.  We will spend a significant amount of time on this topic during our semi-annual Education Industry Strategy Council meeting in Washington, D.C. later this month. 4) Cloud strategy for the broad range of applications in the academic enterprise.  Some of the recent work by Casey Green at the Campus Computing Survey would seem to indicate that there is movement in this area but mostly in what has been termed "below the campus" application areas such as collaboration tools, recruiting, and alumni relations.  It's time to get serious about sourcing elements of mature applications like student information systems, HR, Finance, etc. leveraging a model other than traditional on-campus custom. I've only selected a few areas of the list to highlight, but the unifying theme here (and this is where I run the risk of sounding like an Oracle commercial) is that these lofty goals cry out for partners that can bring economies of scale to bear on the problems married with a deep understanding of the nuances unique to higher education.  In a recent piece in Educause Review on Student Information Systems, the author points out that "best of breed is back". Unfortunately I am compelled to point out that best of breed is a large part of the reason we have made as little progress as we have as an industry in advancing some of the causes outlined above.  Don't confuse "integrated" and "full stack" for vendor lock-in.  The best-of-breed market forces that Ron points to ensure that solutions have to be "integratable" or they don't survive in the marketplace. However, by leveraging the efficiencies afforded by adopting solutions that are pre-integrated (and possibly metered out as a service) allows us to shed unnecessary costs – as difficult as these decisions are to make and to drive throughout the organization. • Would you use (a dialect of) LISP for a real-world application? Where and why?

    - by Anto
LISP (and dialects such as Scheme, Common LISP and Clojure) haven't gained much industry support even though they are quite decent programming languages. (At the moment though it seems like they are gaining some traction). Now, this is not directly related to the question, which is would you use a LISP dialect for a production program? What kind of program and why? Usages of the kind of being integrated into some other code (e.g. C) are included as well, but note that it is what you mean in your answer. Broad concepts are preferred but specific applications are okey as well.

  • Android/Java AI agent framework/middleware

    - by corneliu
I am looking for an AI agent framework to use as a starting point in an Android game I have to create for a university research project. It has been suggested to me to use JADE, but, as far as I can tell, it's not a suitable framework for games (at least for my game idea) because it runs in a split-execution mode, and it needs an always-active network connection to a main host. What I want is just a little something to give me a headstart. I am willing to adjust the game's features to the framework because it's more of a mockup game, and the purpose is to compare the performance of a couple of agents in the game world. The game will be very simplistic, with a minimal UI that displays various stats about the characters in the game (so no graphics, no pathfinding). Thank you.

  • Do you know what is a DevOps Project?

    - by Gopinath
Yesterday I wrote about OpenStack project, an open source cloud computing stack that lets you build Cloud Computing environments. While reading more on this topic I stumbled about a new type of projects called DevOps projects.  OpenStack is all set to become the first DevOps project, reports Forbes …the way OpenStack is applying the open source model to creating cloud infrastructure, the open source model is on the verge of being extended so that the collaboration and design process will include software, hardware, and networking in the data center as well as operational processes. In modern development, the idea of designing software, data center, and operations using one integrated team is called DevOps.

  • Choppy video in vlc even with hardware acceleration on ATI Radeon HD

    - by l0b0
After installing Catalyst 11.12 and studying instructions (1, 2) to enable hardware acceleration I ended up with the following command: sudo apt-get install xvba-va-driver libva-glx1 vainfo && \ vainfo && \ vlc --verbose 2 --ffmpeg-hw video.1080p.x264.mkv The output confirms that it's using the VA API: avcodec decoder: Using VA API version 0.32 for hardware decoding. But even after a reboot the video still looks choppy. There's no vlc output to indicate that the codec is having trouble, or that it's skipping frames. Any idea what could be the problem? Using vlc 1.1.12 with default settings. Also tried (in sequence): sudo apt-get install libva-glx1 sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 xserver-xorg-core Rebooting No luck yet. Specs from /proc/cpuinfo : Intel Core i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz

  • Error installing Windows7 64 bits on VirtualBox

    - by MetaDark
I am trying to set up Windows in Virtual Box, so I don't need to reboot in the rare occasion that I actually need it. The problem is, Virtual Box doesn't preform any errors when I insert the 32bit installation CD but when I try to use the 64bit installation; What!? I am already using the installation disc! I've checked my BIOS to see if I have SVM (AMD's version of VT) disabled and all I see is "Enabled" I have a K9N6PGM2-V2 motherboard A Triple Core AMD Athlon II A Nvdia NForce 430 integrated graphics card 4GB of RAM An 80GB IDE And a 1TB SATA I don't think the last three specifications matter but just in case XP I am pretty sure the CD isn't broken ( I am going to make sure in just a moment ), what could be the cause to this problem? Edit: The 64bit installation CD is not broken, but I found out when trying to install from the 32bit version that it's trying to upgrade, not preform a fresh install - Odd.

  • Lenovo Y460 Shutdown/Reboot/Logoff doesn't work

    - by ultimatebuster
This is a part of the massive dump of problems I'm encountering with my Lenovo Y460 and Ubuntu. Problem: Cannot shutdown/reboot/logoff. Logoff issue: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1791439 Shutdown and Reboot often freezes without doing anything. Currently can only use hard reset. Maybe related to the tricks I did to work around the ATI/Intel issue. See: Lenovo Y460 ATI PowerXpress issue I'm not sure where I can find the shutdown/reboot logs. If you tell me I'll be happy to provide them. Not sure what to do as of right now other than never shutdown/reboot or logoff

  • Ubuntu freezes/crash after wake when upgraded to 13.10

    - by krustbr
Back on 13.04 it didn't occurred. I've upgraded to 13.10, systems apparently working fine, but, when I put it to sleep(using or not using extended monitor) and try to wake up, I see the screen(both), without lock-screen, but completely freeze, Neither tty open, nor the keyboard works. So, only option remains is to force shut-down. Any clue how to investigate the cause or fix it? Thanks in advance, any info that'll help you could ask!
