• How to mock a file with EasyMock?

  Hello, I have recently been introduced to EasyMock and have been asked to develop some unit tests for a FileMonitor class using it. The FileMonitor class is based on a timed event that wakes up and checks for file modification(s) in a defined list of files and directories. I get how to do this using the actual file system, write a test that writes to a file and let the FileMonitor do its thing. So, how do I do this using EasyMock? I just don't get how to have EasyMock mock the file system. Thanks, Todd

• Concurrency Problem in Java ...

  I am designing a client-server chat application in Java. This is a secure application where the messages are exchanged using cryptographic algorithms. I have one server and it can support many clients. My problem is that when one client logs on the server it works fine, but when another user logs into the system, the server starts giving me bad padding exceptions for the encrypted text. I am not able to figure out the problem, according to my logic, when new connection request to server is made, the server creates a thread for listening to the client. Is it possible that once the instance of thread class is created, it does all the processing correctly for the first client, but not for the second client because the variables in server listener thread class already have some previous value, and thus the encrypted text is not decrypted properly? Please advise how I can make this process more robust so that the number of clients does not affect how well the server functions.

• Calling one DAO from another DAO?

  Can this ever make sense? Say I need to fetch an object from the DB which has a relation to another object (represented by a foreign key in the DB, and by a composition in my domain object). If in my first DAO I fetch the data for object 1, then call the dao for object 2, and finally (from within the first DAO, call the setter in object 1 and give it the previously fetched object 2). I know I could do a join instead, but it just seems more logical to me to decouple the functionality (which is why I am skeptical about calling one dao from another). Or should I move some of the logic to the service layer? Thanks Update: I think I solved the problem with help from the answers: all I needed to do was add the following to my mapping of Object 1: <one-to-one name="Object2" fetch="join" class="com...Object2"></one-to-one> I didn't have to change anything else. Mozilla Rhino, Aptana Jaxer and various John Resig's articles are some of the highlights of my search. I wanted to ask for some input from you guys on SO. your opinions and preferably experience in this.   Hi SQL'ers, This is a followup question to: SQL Query with ORDER BY But I think the SQL logic is going to be quite different, so I am posting it as separate question. I am trying to extend my sql SELECT query it and having some trouble: I have the table: id type radius ------------------------- 1 type1 0.25 2 type2 0.59 3 type1 0.26 4 type1 0.78 5 type3 0.12 6 type2 0.45 7 type3 0.22 8 type3 0.98 and I am trying to learn how to SELECT the second smallest radius for each given type. So the returned recordset should look like: id type radius ------------------------- 3 type1 0.26 2 type2 0.59 7 type3 0.22 (Note: in the referenced question, I was looking for the lowest radius, not the second lowest radius). I am assuming I have to use LIMIT and OFFSET, but if I use the MIN() won't that return a distinct record containing the minimum radius? Does anyone have any thoughts on how to attack this? • Modify on-the-fly verbose_name in a model field on django admin

  Hi I have this sample model working with the admin class Author(models.Model): name = models.CharField(_('Text in here'), max_length=100) with verbose_name set as ugettext_lazy 'Text in here', but sometimes, depending on the site_id i want to present a diferent verbose name, so I modified the init in this way def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs): super(Author, self).__init__(*args, **kwargs) #some logic in here self._meta.get_field('name').verbose_name = _('Other text') It works, displaying the 'Other text' instead the 'Text in here'... except for the very first time the author/add view is used. ¿Is it the right way to do it? ¿How can i fix the first time problem? Even though the code work properly when I log the action of the bar button item in the application code (not on testing code) it gives null. The code I have used is given below. NSLog(@"%@",NSStringFromSelector(barButton.action)); In the testing code I have created a bar button called logout and assign barbutton to that.To click the bar button item programatically I followed the following code. • good documentation about "avoid catching throwable", in context of weblogic server

  hi all, i am currently refactoring an existing codebase (EJBs...) to rip out all blocks where a Throwable is catched inside of the EJB. try { ... do some business logic } catch(Throwable t){ ... log and swallow ... :-( } i want/need to convince the people around me with proper documentation that "catching throwable" is a no-go for an EJB (we have lots of discussions around this :-(( ). weblogic will handle all the "Error" conditions and maybe invalidate EJBs and put fresh(working) EJBs into the pool. catching Throwable would undermine all these security nets provided by weblogic. and catching throwable is bad practice anyway (but people here are reluctant and use the "throwable" hammer everywhere). is anyone able to point me to some online docs where this behaviour is explained (for weblogic or jboss or...). i searched via google and had a look at the weblogic docs but wasn't able to find anything, just generic java doc. any help highly appreciated cheers marcel

• Silverlight -> WCF -> Database -> problem

  Hi there, I have some silverlight code that calls a WCF service which then uses the Entity Framework to access the database and return records. Everything runs fine but ... when I replace the Entity Framework code with classic ADO.NET code I get an error: The remote server returned an error: NotFound When I call the ADO.NET code directly with a unit test it returns records fine so it's not a problem with the ADO.NEt code I used fiddler and it seems to say that the service cannot be found with a "500" error. i don't think it's anything to do with the service as the only thing I change is the technology to access the database. Anyone know what i'm missing here?

• Actionscript 3 introspection -- function names

  I am trying to iterate through each of the members of an object. For each member, I check to see if it is a function or not. If it is a function, I want to get the name of it and perform some logic based on the name of the function. I don't know if this is even possible though. Is it? Any tips? example: var mems: Object = getMemberNames(obj, true); for each(mem: Object in members) { if(!(mem is Function)) continue; var func: Function = Function(mem); //I want something like this: if(func.getName().startsWith("xxxx")) { func.call(...); } } I'm having a hard time finding much on doing this. • Database design: circular references

  I have three database tables: users emails invitations Emails are linked to users by a user_id field. Invitations are also linked to users by a user_id field Emails can be created without an invitation, but every invitation must have an email. I would like to link the emails and invitations tables so it is possible to find the email for a particular invitation. However this creates a circular reference, both an invitation and an email record hold the id for the same user. Is this bad design and if so, how could I improve it? My feeling is that with use of foreign keys and good business logic, it is fine.

  I am struggling with the configuration for the scenario below. I have a custom WCF/WIF STS (RP-STS) that provides security tokens to my WCF services RP-STS is an "Active" STS RP-STS acts as a claims transformation STS RP-STS trusts tokens from many customer-specific identity provider STSes (IdP-STS) When a WCF Client connects to a service it should authenticate with it's local IdP-STS The reading that I've done describes this as Home Realm Discovery. HRD is usually described within the context of web applications and Passive STSes. My questions is, for my situation, does the logic for choosing an IdP-STS endpoint belong in the RP-STS or the WCF Client application? I thought it belonged in the RP-STS, but I cannot figure out the configuration to make this happen. RP-STS has a single endpoint, but I cannot figure out how to add more than one trusted issuer per endpoint. Any guidance on this would be very appreciated (I'm out of useful keywords to Google.) Also, if I'm way off please offer alternative approaches. Thanks!

  I have a simple inheritance heirarchy with MyType2 inheriting from MyType1. I have an instance of MyType1, arg, passed in as an argument to a method. If arg is an instance of MyType2, then I'd like to perform some logic, transforming the instance. My code looks something like the code below. • Converting old WCF service to RIA one

  Hi there, Currently I have a service that looks like: Some app <-- WCF Service <-- Business Logic <-- Entity Framework Model <-- SQL Database One of "some app" would be Silverlight, but there as well will be lots of other clients (mainly mobile devices). To me the greatest benefit of having RIA services is possibility of making ordinary (not asynchronous) calls from Silverlight. I wondered if there is an easy way of converting what I have so far to be a RIA service? I as well wonder if there is a point of doing so if I plan to use the same service for multiple platforms/clients? Any help/links would be greatly appreciated.

• Can a PL/pgSQL function contain a dynamic subquery?

  I am writing a PL/pgSQL function. The function has input parameters which specify (indirectly), which tables to read filtering information from. The function embeds business logic which allows it to select data from different tables based on the input arguments. The function dynamically builds a subquery which returns filtering data which is then used to run the main query. My questions are: Is it 'legal' to use a dynamic subquery in a PL/pgSQL function. I cant see why not - but this question is related to the next one. AFAIK, PL/pgSQL are cached or precompiled by the query engine. How does having a function that generates dynamic subqueries impact the work of the query engine?

• Strange behaviour of code inside TransactionScope?

  We are facing a very complex issue in our production application. We have a WCF method which creates a complex Entity in the database with all its relation. public void InsertEntity(Entity entity) { using(TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { EntityDao.Create(entity); } } EntityDao.Create(entity) method is very complex and has huge pieces of logic. During the entire process of creation it creates several child entities and also have several queries to database. During the entire WCF request of entity creation usually Connection is maintained in a ThreadStatic variable and reused by the DAOs. Although some of the queries in DAO described in step 2 uses a new connection and closes it after use. Overall we have seen that the above process behaviour is erratic. Some of the queries in the inner DAO does not even return actual data from the database? The same query when run to the actaul data store gives correct result. What can be possible reason of this behaviour?

• Has anybody use javafx on CDC J9?

  Is that possible?? I mean, I have an already working project that runs in windows mobile using the J9 virtual machine for CDC. My user interface there is using AWT and it works fine and it looks OK, but been honest it doesn't take real advantage of the devices were is running... So I start reading about JavaFX and that looks really cool, but all that I see about mobiles there is applied to CLDC, MIDP, etc. but my application is already running on CDC J9 and I can't change this cause I'm using a Derby database on it. So, my plan is to code the GUI again, but keeping the logic of the application. So do you guys think javafx is the way to go? or, am I wasting my time learning javafx for this project. • Avoid painting over nested controls

  I am writing a toolbar-style control and use the ThemeServices unit to paint the background required by the toolbar. Like so: ThemeServices.DrawElement(Canvas.Handle, ThemeServices.GetElementDetails(trRebarRoot), ARect); I then drop child controls onto the toolbar and voila - instant toolbar. Except that every now and again I notice that the nested (child) controls don't repaint as well. So my control paints its background and the child controls disappear until you move the mouse over them. Some of the edit controls show their client area (no border) and some of them are just gone altogether. This happens mostly when I place a window from another application over the toolbar and move it away. I keep thinking this has to be very easy to cure, that perhaps I'm somehow preventing the paint message from reaching the child controls, or missing an override but I have been unable to figure it out.

  I am assigned to a performance-tuning-debugging-troubleshooting task. Scenario: a multi-application environment running on several networked machines using databases. OS is Unix, DB is Oracle. Business logic is implemented across applications using synchronous/asynchronous communication. Applications are multi-user with several hundred call center users at peak time. User interfaces are web-based. Applications are third party, I can get access to developers and source code. I only have the production system and a functional test environment, no load test environment. Problem: bad performance! I need fast results. Management is going crazy. I got symptom examples like these: user interface actions taking minutes to complete. Seaching for a customer usually takes 6 seconds but an immediate subsequent search with same parameters may take 6 minutes. What would be your strategy for finding root causes?

• How to change line thickness in iText?

  I'm drawing images to pdf using Java framework iText. I need to draw lines of specified width. There is a method setLineWidth(float width) in class PdfContentByte that should change it. However no matter what value I pass as its parameter the lines drawn are always extra thin. There is following line in javadoc of setLineWidth: The line width specifies the thickness of the line used to stroke a path and is measured in user space units. I don't know what is "space unit". Everything else in iText seems to be measured in point(around 1/72 inch). I cant find any reference to what are those "space units" and how to change them. code: to.setLineWidth(thickness); to.moveTo(x, y); to.lineTo(x + 100, y + 100); Variable to contains instance of PdfContentByte.
