How do I implement URL rewriting in my .htaccess file?

I'd like to do some URL rewriting (Why? See this question.) so that instead of users seeing addresses like labouseur.com/course-compilers.html they can instead see and use simply labouseur.com/course-compilers (Even better, maybe I should restructure that so that it's courses/compilers.) I'm using a Linux-based shared hosting service for my website, so I do not have administrative control of the server, but I do have control over .htaccess. The references I've read online seemed less than clear to me, so I'm looking for a little clarity and advice here. Thanks!

How to recover organic position in Google results after server down?

I have several sites that were doing quite well in terms of organic SEO rankings. I have the important sites setup in Google's Webmaster tools. Long story short, the system was down for about two weeks. Now in AdSense and Analytics, I am seeing that the page views are SLOWLY increasing. and I would like to know if there is anything I can do now to try to expedite the process of regaining those positions. Since there were several errors from that server, is it possible that Google will now rank any site from that IP address lower due to those two weeks of errors? Is this something that I just have to let ride out? Thanks.

How to Keep SEO Score from Dropping with Duplicate Content

I'm hoping that someone has a solution for what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm working on a travel agency web site and there's a "Overview" section for each cruise line. These overviews are located on the index page for each cruise line. Here's my issue: The company is creating a search engine that includes details on each cruise line. Their write-ups on each cruise line are great, so I'd like to include the overview they created for each cruise line, rather than having to create all new ones. However, I don't want duplicating their content to negatively affect the SEO scores of the pages they originally put this content on. It's gong to duplicate, since each page that's dynamically generated by their search engine is going to include a section about the cruise line (where I'd want to place the overview). Question: Is there any way that I can include these overviews (ideally, copying the exact HTML that they've already implemented) without the search engines indexing those particular code sections? I'd want the rest of the search result pages to be indexed...just not the section of each page that contains this duplicate code. I saw something about using a span class named robots-nocontent in Yahoo (not sure if this also applies to Bing) and googleon / googleoff tags in Google. Is this the best solution? I'm open to any suggestions, thanks!

Cannot submit change of address to subdomain in Google Webmaster Tools?

I am pointing several domains to one URL, a URL which happens to include a subdomain. ALL of the domains are using 301 redirects to point to this new address. One of the older domains (which used to be a site) is a 'property' in Webmaster Tools, as is the new site (the one with the subdomain.) When registering a 'Change of Address' for the old site with WebmasterTools, it suggests the following method - Set up your content on your new domain. (done) Redirect content from your old site using 301 redirects. (done) Add and verify your new site to Webmaster Tools. (done) Then, directly below that, to proceed, it says Tell us the URL of your new domain: Your account doesn't contain any sites we can use for a change of address. Add and verify the new site, then try again. I have already submitted and verified the new site. The only reason I can fathom I am getting this error is because the new site includes a subdomain. Although I don't foresee getting punished for this, as I am correctly 301 redirecting traffic anyway, I'm curious as to why the Change of Address submission isn't working appropriately for me. Has anyone else had experience with this?

Which conference would you guys suggest from a web entrepeneur's point of view, if there were just one to go to? Space in img:s "ALT" attribute good/bad for search engines?

I am trying to make it easier for search engines to crawl my website, as it is almost 100% dynamic. I have a couple of transparent images which are actually links to sections of my page. I wonder, if I add an "alt" attribute containing space characters to explain the target, will this improve SE rankings etc? For example: <img src="blabla.png" alt="post new classified"> Or will this just result in errors? Ànd, what should I put in the alt attribute if I can't use space? PS: Another different and short question, will javascript-rich content make a page less important to crawlers? Thanks

Stackexchange uses imgur link to show the image to their website, but how do I do this? I am really curious on what ways I can upload an image to a file and show it immediatly again. Like webshops where you can post your products are also uploading images to show them immediatly. What way are there to do this and what is the best / most secure?(I assume how stackexchange does it), but I also have no idea how to do that.

i have a website with thousands of dynamic pages. I want to use the robots.txt file in order to dissalow certain url patterns corresponding to pages with duplicate content. For example i have a page for article itemA belonging to category catA/subcatA, with URL: /catA/subcatA/itemA this is the URL that i want to be indexed from google. this article is also visible via tagging in various other places in the web site. The URLs produced via tagging is like: /tagA1/itemA this URL i want NOT to be indexed from google. Problem Exp : Suppose I upload 100 folders of Songs, each folder is for one Album. I want a way to generate a page with all the folders name (Album Name) in it. I need to redirect CakePHP installation host to my domain. Location of my Cakephp installation: myhosting.com/newsite/ Domain: www.mydomain.com I'm currently using URL Frame to direct www.mydomain.com to myhosting.com/newsite/. Problem When I load www.mydomain.com, I see all links in the site is pointing to the hosting location - example - myhosting.com/newsite/product/1 It should be pointing to www.mydomain.com/product/1 Any simple way to fix this? Probably very simple to solve it, but I can't bend it. Help much appreciated.

I have a tricky problem related to 301 redirections I badly need help with. I tried to implement these via .htaccess, but ran into trouble. Subdomain Is Redirected and Causing an Error Because www. is Added

On my site, say example.com, if I try to access test.example.com, Firefox automatically adds www. to test.example.com, making it www.test.example.com, which causes an error. However, if I visit a site like my.ebay.com, no www. is added so no error occurs. What's going on? One nuance I didn't realize until now. If I try to access the site using test.example.com/, the www. is added. If however that trailing slash is not there, then I am sent to the subdomain properly.

In addition, if I had a large image that took up most of the top of the screen and resulting in my content being below the fold or toward the bottom of the screen, would that content be given less weight? Note This is content that occurs early on in my code. I'm not talking about having a ton of content and if the content that occurs later would be given less weight, but if content that occurs early on put ends up below the fold would be given less weight.

How should I track multi-valued page attributes (e.g. tags) using custom variables?

Our pages can each have many tags, e.g 'football', 'sms', 'nsfw', etc.. wich we would like to track in google analytics. We're already tracking things like category using google analytics custom variables. We've used three of the five available slots so far. How can we track tags the same way? If we just mush them all together - e.g. 'football, sms, nsfw' then can we track the ones that are tagged 'football'? What's the right way to track multi-valued page attributes using custom variables?

Can I redirect the HTTP request towards an old folder to the homepage using .htaccess file?

I have to following situation: I had an old blog that was made using Joomla (this blog was indexed well enough by search engines). For some problems I delete it and I have create it again using WordPress. Now I have many visit (from Google) that leading to specific pages of the old site (pages that don't exist in the new version). For example I have visit to URL as: /scorejava/index.php/corso-spring-mvc/1-test that don't exist on my new site. I would know if using the .htaccess file (or other sistem) I can redirect the HTTP request directed to some subfolder (that don't exist in the new version) to the homepage of my new site. For example I have the request towards the void URL: /scorejava/index.php/corso-spring-mvc/1-test. And I would create a regular expression that say something like: all the request toward the subfolder corso-spring-mvc (and all it's content file and subfolder) have to be redirected to www.scorejava.com. Is it possible?

How to test whether an image is already in cache? [migrated]

I am developing a web site that has a lot of large, high-quality images on the home page. On the home page, there is an image carousel that pulls ten high quality images from a database. The images can be 1 meg each. The carousel images aren't my problem (right now), but it has something to do with it. The problem I am trying to address right now is that I use a high quality background image that I want to continue using, it's about 180k. If I have the background in cache on the home page, I want to use it. If not, then I don't want to use it on the home page. I'll load it from a different page. When the user returns to the home page, and the background image is in cache, I want to use it. Can I test whether an image is already in cache and if so, dynamically load or NOT load based on that? Why is Cloudflare waiting for name servers for over 4 days?

I've registered for Cloudflare's free plan and have completed the process of redirecting the DNS as instructed, including changing the name servers. This was done 4 days ago. The problem is that cloudflare is giving me: "websites" -- "Finishing up. Waiting for your name servers to change to * Please allow up to 24 hours to complete this process (info)" "dashboards" -- "Analytics data could not be loaded. You do not have any initialized zones" I can see via traceroute that CloudFlare is the DNS to my site. Also, somehow this has messed up with my google analytics account so I have no idea if I get visitors to my site or not. What should be done to fix this?

I submitted my site's URL to my workplace's printed newsletter and when I get the printed version, they added a dot to the end of it. Some people will realize that the period is not a part of the url but others will not. Is there an easy way to redirect from http://example.com/home. to http://example.com/home? I have a IIS 7.0 shared hosting with GoDaddy. This means I have access to the box only through their interface so some options might be limited.

Why does the homepage rank in exact match and not in broad anymore? [closed]

My website was ranking on page one for "walking shoes reviews" in broad and exact. It has disappeared in the rankings for broad and yet still ranks in exact match. No indication in the Webmaster tools of anything wrong yet Google analytics shows no more activity. his occurred sometime after Panda and Penguin. Not sure which because I didn't check closely for a while, this is a fun site for me. I walk for the enjoyment and health benefits so I built this site.

Is there an open source solution that I can host on a web server that will allow users to anonymously upload a file to me?

I'm looking for some kind of web application I can host on my Linux web server that will allow users to upload files of arbitrary size to me from their browser without requiring them to log in. Ideally this application would allow me to generate a link to my website that allowed for a one-time use upload. It might contain a unique, random key that was only good for that session. I could email them the link, they click it and are taken to a page where they can upload their file to me. I'm mainly targeting friends and family that need to send me files that are too large for email. I don't want to require them to install anything (dropbox), sign up and log in, etc. I'm definitely not teaching them to use FTP. This wouldn't be a difficult project for me to roll on my own but I'd like to take something off the shelf if it is possible. Does anything like this exist that my google-foo isn't turning up?

How do i get this to work? [closed]

This is my code.... it speaks for itself. <?php define("html","<html>"); define("htmlEnd","</html>"); etc... etc... ?> What i'm trying to do is make a wrapper for html's tags so they won't be needed anymore. But i can't get any of the attributes for html elements to be defined in php. This again speaks for itself... i don't know any other way of saying this... i guess how would i make a other mark up language like html without any tags but still keep everything about html is what i'm trying to say.....
