  I am assigned to a performance-tuning-debugging-troubleshooting task. Scenario: a multi-application environment running on several networked machines using databases. OS is Unix, DB is Oracle. Business logic is implemented across applications using synchronous/asynchronous communication. Applications are multi-user with several hundred call center users at peak time. User interfaces are web-based. Applications are third party, I can get access to developers and source code. I only have the production system and a functional test environment, no load test environment. Problem: bad performance! I need fast results. Management is going crazy. I got symptom examples like these: user interface actions taking minutes to complete. Seaching for a customer usually takes 6 seconds but an immediate subsequent search with same parameters may take 6 minutes. What would be your strategy for finding root causes?

• NUnit vs Visual Studio 2010's MSTest?

  I realise that there are many older questions addressing the general question of NUnit v MSTest for versions of Visual Studio up to 2008 (such as this one). Microsoft have a history of getting things right in their 3rd version. For MSTest, that is VS2010. Have they done so with MSTest? Would you use it in a new project in preference to NUnit? My specific concerns: speed running tests within CruiseControl.NET (either commandline or MSBuild task) code coverage reports from CC.NET can you run MSTest tests in debug mode (We use ReSharper, so test-runners are not an issue for us. We have used NUnit for the last few years. We do not have TFS.)

• HTML/JavaScript: mouseover effect for image maps?

  I'm trying to help out a nonprofit by doing their website. They want (ugh) their logo to serve as an HTML image map. In other words, when you click on different parts of the logo, you're directed to different web pages. They also, however, want mouseover effects: when you mouseover a particular portion of the image map, that piece of the graphic should be highlighted. If the logo was simple, I would slice it up into rectangles and attach mouseover and click events to the appropriate rectangles. With the complexity of their logo, this is not possible, however. Has anyone done anything like this without Flash? I'm not a Flash developer but this is looking like a very difficult task in just HTML/JavaScript. Any ideas? Thanks!

• WPF Statusbar Updates - help, I seem to be going round in circles

  I seem to be going round in circles. I have a WPF application that has a main ribbon window with a status bar. When you navigate to a "view" a user control is displayed as the content of the main window. The view has a ViewModel which handles retrieving data from the database and the View's datacontext is set to the ViewModel. What I want is to have the lengthy operation (data retrieval) run on a background thread and whilst it is running the status in the main window to report appropriately. When the background task is complete, the status should revert back to "Ready" (much the same as Visual Studio). How should I wire this together so that I can have the data access code separated out in the ViewModel whilst keeping a responsive UI? I have tried using the BackgroundWorker is various places in the code and I still end up with an unresponsive UI.

  Hi all, I wrote a program to solve a complicated problem. This program is just a c# console application and doesn't do console.write until the computation part is finished, so output won't affect the performance. I actually have a i7 intel cpu with 6G three channel DDR3 memory. I am wondering how I can improve the utilization of my hardware. Thanks a lot

• How can I encode four unsigned bytes (0-255) to a float and back again using HLSL?

  Hello! I am facing a task where one of my hlsl shaders require multiple texture lookups per pixel. My 2d textures are fixed to 256*256, so two bytes should be sufficient to address any given texel given this constraint. My idea is then to put two xy-coordinates in each float, giving me eight xy-coordinates in pixel space when packed in a Vector4 format image. These eight coordinates are then used to sample another texture(s). The reason for doing this is to save graphics memory and an attempt to optimize processing time, since then I don't require multiple texture lookups. By the way: Does anyone know if encoding/decoding 16 bytes from/to 4 floats using 1 sampling is slower than 4 samplings with unencoded data?

• Is it possible to force an error in an Integration Services data flow to demonstrate its rollback?

  I have been tasked with demoing how Integration Services handles an error during a data flow to show that no data makes it into the destination. This is an existing package and I want to limit the code changes to the package as much as possible (since this is most likely a one time deal). The scenario that is trying to be understood is a "systemic" failure - the source file disappears midstream, or the file server loses power, etc. I know I can make this happen by having the Error Output of the source set to Failure and introducing bad data but I would like to do something lighter than that. I suppose I could add a Script Transform task and look for a certain value and throw an error but I was hoping someone has come up with something easier / more elegant. Thanks, Matt

• Possible to register Selenium RC's with the Hudson Selenium Grid Hub w/o the RC's being slaves in th

  I am trying to get Hudson to run my ruby based selenium tests. I have installed the Selenium Grid plugin, but I don't want to have the RC's running as slaves in a Hudson cluster. The reason for this is I don't want to waste the next six years of my life trying to configure each of my projects in various Windows environments. Hudson currently pulls each project from Github and builds it just fine. With a regular Selenium Grid setup, I am able to edit the grid_configuration.yml file to represent the various environments I wish to tests against, then pass environment variables to the rake task that runs the test i.e. which browser/platfom to run on and the URL of the application under test -- usually a port on the hub machine running in a specific environment. In this way, the machines on which the RC's run don't need to know anything about the source code of my apps, they just need to have selenium-grid installed and have registered with the hub. Is there a way of elegantly emulating this with Hudson?

  I've been using OpenGL ES 1.1 on the iPhone for 10 months, and in that time there is one seemingly simple task I have been unable to do: programmatically fade a textured object. To keep it simple: how can I alpha fade, under code control, a simple 2D triangle that has a texture (with alpha) applied to it. I would like to fade it in/out while it is over a scene, not a simple colored background. So far the only technique I have to do this is to create a texture with multiple pre-faded copies of the texture on it. (Yuck) As an example, I am unable to do this using Apple's GLSprite sample code as a starting point. It already textures a quad with a texture that has its own alpha. I would like to fade that object in and out.

  I added the authlogic_facebook_connect plugin to my project and I'm now having problem running my cucumber test because of a NoMethodError. undefined method `set_facebook_session' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) In authlogic_facebook_connect/Session.rb the method "authenticating_with_facebook_connect?" is called as some sort of callback and the controller is defined but is missing the 'set_facebook_session' method. def authenticating_with_facebook_connect? controller.set_facebook_session attempted_record.nil? && errors.empty? && controller.facebook_session end I don't understand why the cucumber test is not loading the controller with this method. I also test the app in development and cucumber environments and everything works perfect. Here is the full cucumber output.   Hi, i need a locking in memcache. Since all operations are atomic that should be an easy task. My idea is to use a basic spin-lock mechanism. So every object that needs locking in memcache gets a lock object, which will be polled for access. // pseudo code // try to get a lock int lock; do { lock = Memcache.increment("lock", 1); } while(lock != 1) // ok we got the lock // do something here // and finally unlock Memcache.put("lock", 0); How does such a solution perform?   I think of a game as a state machine. Game States separate I/O processing, game logic and rendering into different classes: while (game_loop) { game->state->io_events(this); game->state->logic(this); game->state->rendering(); } You can easily change a game state in this approach. MVC separation works in more complex way: while (game_loop) { game->cotroller->io_events(this); game->model->logic(this); game->view->rendering(); } So changing Game States becomes error prone task (switch 3 MVC objects, not 1). What are practical ways of combining these 2 concepts?

  How do I update different columns and rows across a table? I want to do something similiar to replace a string in SQL server I want to do this but the value exists in multiple columns of the same type. The values are foreign keys varchars to an employee table. Each column represents a task, so the same employee may be assigned to several tasks in a record and those tasks will vary between records. My goal is to be able to pass the arrayStrings to the RootViewController by trying something similar to allClasses = arrayStrings. That way when the RootViewController is loaded it can populate with new information. How would I got about accomplishing that task?

• Developing for the iPhone outside Xcode

  I'd like to develop and run my iPhone applications from the command line and my personal editor instead of having to use Xcode. So far I've been able to edit all the files in Emacs and run xcodebuild in the project to compile/link/etc. The next step would be to create a Makefile task to launch the iPhone Simulator with my current application. Any ideas of how can I do that? Update: I'm not interested in XCode calling my editor, I just want to forget about the IDE as much as I can.

  I am working on a pretty simple web application (famous last words) and am working with Rails 2.3.5 + MongoMapper 0.7.2 and using embedded documents. I have two questions to ask: First, are there any example applications out there using Rails + MongoMapper + EmbeddedDocument? Preferably on GitHub or some other similar site so that I can take a look at the source and see where I am supposed to head? If not ... ... what is the best way to approach this task? How would I go about creating a form to handle an embedded document. What I am attempting to do is add addresses to users. I can toss up the two models in question if you would like.   I'm working on a metaprogramming task, where I'm trying to use a single method to define a polymorphic association in the calling class, while also defining the association in the target class. I need to pass in the name of the calling class to get the association right. • Environment variables get lost between MSBuild projects

  Hi, I have a .NET solution containing following projects: web application (WAP) web deployment (WDP, .wdproj) wix setup (WIX, .wixproj) In the WDP I've used a custom MSBuild task (SetEnvVar) to set some env. variables for further use in the build process. After setting them I can use them without prob. in the WDP but in the WIX they are empty/undefined. The strange thing is that when I reference those env. vars in the WIX files (by using properties in .wxs or preproc vars in .wxi) I get the values as expected. Do you have any idea why the env. vars get lost/are undefined in .wixproj? By the way the (solution) build process is triggered from inside VS 2010.
