  I feel like this question has been repeated here, but I couldn't find it. What open-source programmer's editor or IDE is best for writing code in C? A GUI and integration with Clang for static code analysis or git for version control would be convenient, but aren't necessary. I would ideally use two editors: one feature-filled IDE and one with a small memory footprint, but editors like jEdit, Geany, Diakonos, nano, etc. don't satisfy many of my needs, which include: Good support for refactoring and code completion. Extensibility in C or a "modern" scripting language (i.e. Ruby or Python) Relatively good performance and lack of bloated-ness

• How long does a reverse DNS lookup take?

  How long should I expect a reverse lookup take? 100 milliseconds? 1 second? 10 second? 30 seconds? What's your experience? Why? We're debating adding a feature to our server software which would require a reverse DNS lookup each time a client connects. The lookup would be done synchronously, so I'm worried that it could slow connection-times down a lot. I just wanted to hear other people's experience regarding reverse DNS lookup times.

Lexical syntax of comments My question is this: What are the most important (or at least significant / funny but true / sad but true) laws of Computer Science and programming? • updating dojo grid cell values in the server

  I am using dojo datagrid to display my data. When the end user edit the cell values it should be updated in the server using ajax calls(when the focus goes out of the cell). Else, I should have a Edit & update/cancel buttons for each row to handle the same feature. But I don know how to place edit & update buttons inside the grid and capture their events. By default dojo updates only local the store value(client side). how can I save the updated cell values into the server? do we need to write any override methods to do so?? I am new to dojo. Any detailed explanation or sample codes would be much appreciated. Could anyone lend a hand to solve this issue?? Thank you Regards, Raj

• Frequent Netbeans freezes

  I'm using Netbeans 6.8 for PHP projects located on network drives in a Windows network. Frequently, the IDE gets really slow (like a temporary freeze) to a point where it's totally unusable. At first it seems like a total crash, but after some time (might be sevaral minutes) the IDE works again as before. This happens with Netbeans 6.7 as well as 6.8 on my Windows XP 32-bit installation. I'm using Java 1.6.0_13. This is a fresh Netbeans installation, so it can't have to do with too many temp files. I assume it has to do with the frequent code checks that Netbeans does. It's probably not very fast when doing this over the network connection. But it can't be that this feature renders the IDE useless... • Ruby CMS/blog: Mephisto vs. Radiant

  I'm looking for a blogging tool with some light CMS features in Ruby on Rails. I mainly want something simple, but configurable. I have no need for page snippets, etc. Just your basic main blog, very good (and easy) theme support, some nice sidebar stuff, a few static pages and MetaWeblog API support. I'm thinking of either using Mephisto or Radiant CMS (everything else seems half-baked or extremely lightweight at best): http://mephistoblog.com/ http://www.radiantcms.org/ Documentation for Mephisto seems very lacking and their site is a mess. I've also read some bad things about it's stability. Radiant seems more stable in comparison and has heaps of useful plug-ins. However, it isn't designed for blogging out of the box. That has to be added as almost an after thought. Creating a custom theme also seems more cumbersome with Radiant due to the sub-page/snippet feature. Which should I choose?

Like other portals, subscriber users should be able to create a topic, discuss topic, share information about them, and have the ability for notifications/alerts. The added feature, I would like to have is to moderate users. Based on the topic of discussion, users will be asked automated questions and their responses will be processed to provide recommendations. I have no knowledge of social networking portal requirements. I will be coding alone and want to have something up and running in about six months. • Maven plugin in Eclipse - Settings.xml file is missing

  Hello, I installed the maven plugin for eclipse. Then tried updating the index and got the following error: Unable to update index for central|http://repo1.maven.org/maven2 While trying to edit the proxy settings through windows-preferences-maven-user settings, I realise there is no such file. I don't have separate maven installation and only the plugin. Please someone could help resolving the problem? Thank you very much. • ASP.NET ASPX Designer question. Bug?

  Check out this Screenshot. Shouldn't a hierarchy list of tags appear here? Usually it appears. Sometimes, the tag "appears" there but without text (but the tag object is there as evident when you hover over it.) Other times, like this, nothing appears. It's a usual feature to see the hierarchy or tags which gives me easily access to the tags from design view for easy altering in the properties window. I think too many developers love to do things the hard way and sludge thru tags in HTML view and hardly use this, but it frustrates me when it doesn't work all the time. Is it me? Nah....

• dbpedia auto-suggest labels

  Wikipedia has a auto-suggest feature on its search field. If you for instance type in "mars" it lists a few items including Mars, Marseille, Marsh. I am looking to implement something similar working off the latest DBpedia export (wikipedia in database form). If I do a search for all labels in the labels_en.nt file that DBpedia offer that begin with "mars" then, even if I remove ones that redirect on to others that are listed, I end up with a huge list. In trying to understand how wikipedia does this I noticed that I'm actually querying this URL which returns a JSON string. Now my problem is that I don't know how wikipedia narrows the list down. Perhaps it does so based on page popularity. The higher views/edits a page has the higher it goes in this suggestion box. If so, does DBpedia export this information?

  Hi, I would like to create a configuration panel for the homepage of the web-app I'm designing with Django. This configuration panel should let me choose some basic options like highlighting some news, setting a showcase banner, and so on. Basically I don't need an app with different rows, but just a panel page with some configuration options. The automatically generated administration area created by Django doesn't seem to handle this feature as far as I can see, so I'm asking you for some directions. Any hint is highly appreciated. • Merge Microsoft Word documents with TortoiseSVN

  TortoiseSVN has a nice VBA script that allows to merge Microsoft Word documents using Word builtin change tracking functionality. This way, when I merge changes from a branch into the trunk I can resolve the conflicts in Word documents. However, the feature is not as useful as it could because it doesn't track revision changes; it just compares the two documents as a whole. This way, when I merge a revision where one paragraph was added to the document I'm not offered to review this paragraph. Instead, I have to review all the differences between the source and target documents (including stuff like TOC bookmark names). Is it an inherent limitation I cannot override? Or is it due to the fact that my Word version is pretty old? (I'm using Word 2002). Also, if you know about a magic tool or plugin... ;-)

• Best way to sort MySql results based on two columns and show results using pagination?

  I want to sort results set first based on one column and then based on second column. I know how to do it on server side. And then I want to show these results with pagination feature. Question: would it be better to do it on client side via ajax in jQuery? I'm using Zend Framework. Would Zend_Paginator module be useful in this scenario? Basically I want to evaluate all the possible ways? Which one would be best and/or simplest option given I'm using jQuery and Zend Framework?

• How can I learn a multitouch screen's communication protocol and write a C# application for it?

  I have got a monitor with multitouch overlay on top of it. It works fine with Windows 7 but I want to write a multitouch application in C# for Windows XP which doesn't support touch feature out of the box. There is no documentation whatsoever and I emailed the manufacturer but never got a reply. However the device works with Google Earth, which doesn't natively support multitouch, on Windows XP. So I think it generates many types of messages together i.e. WM_TOUCH for Windows 7, one for Google Earth COM API, and probably its own messages either in UDP or Windows message form. How can I trap all communications and learn the protocol?

• Connecting to SQL Server with Visual Studio Express Editions

  I find it odd that in Visual C# 2008 Express edition, when you use the database explorer, your options are: 1) Microsoft Access 2) SQL Server Compact 3.5, and 3) SQL Server Database File. BUT if you use Visual Web Developer 2008 Express, you can connect to a regular SQL Server, Oracle, ODBC, etc. For people developing command-line or other C# apps that need to talk to a SQL Server database, do you really need to build your LINQ/Data Access code with one IDE (Visual Web Developer) and your program in another (Visual C#)? It's not a hard workaround, but it seems weird. If Microsoft wanted to force you to upgrade to Visual Studio to connect to SQL Server, why would they include that feature in one of their free IDEs but not the other? I feel like I might be missing something (like how to do it all in Visual C#). Thanks! Tom

But when I click, the vote number can not be updated immediately. • C# Sequence Diagramm Reverse Engineering Tool?

  It's essential for me to find a tool that will reverse engineer sequence diagrams by integrating with the debugger. I suppose using the profiler could work also but less desirable. It's a key requirement that the tool in question will record all threads of execution since the app, TickZoom, is heavily parallelized. We just evaluated a most awesome tool from Sparx called Enterprise Architect which integrates with the debugger. It allows you to set a break point, start recording method traces from that break point. It's a lovely design and GUI. Hope it works for you but it only records a single thread of execution so that makes it unusable for us. I will put in a feature request to Sparx. But hope to find a similar tool that does this now since that's the only features we need--not all the other stuff that Sparx also does rather well. Sincerely, Wayne

• How does Facebook chat avoid continuous polling of the server?

  I am trying to understand how Facebook's chat feature receives messages without continuously poling the server. Firebug shows me a single GET XmlHttpRequest continuously sitting there, waiting for a response from the server. After 5 minutes, this never timed out. How are they preventing timeout? An AJAX request can just sit there like that indefinitely, waiting for a response? Can I do this with JSONRequest? I see this at json.org: JSONRequest is designed to support duplex connections. This permits applications in which the server can asynchronously initiate transmissions. This is done by using two simultaneous requests: one to send and the other to receive. By using the timeout parameter, a POST request can be left pending until the server determines that it has timely data to send. Or is there another way to let an AJAX call just sit there, waiting, besides using JSONRequest?

• Installing a new SQL Server instance fails

  I've previously in my setup installed SQL Server Express 2005. Now I've switched to SQL Server Express 2008. I updated the command line parameters to those documented for the latter. If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page).   I need a light css editor with certain functions. Already downloaded and tried a few apps but still no luck, none of them fit my requirements. Actually, there is one, CssEdit (or TextMate), but unfortunately i'm a windows user... Already tried: built-in NetBeans IDE css editor (btw nice editor, the one i'm using now for css) IntelJ IDE (very good html and css editor, but using the entire ide just for this - that's crazy) ArduoCss (very buggy in win7 environment) Notepad Notepad++ (it rules, but as i said, i need something more functional for css editing) Style Master ( if i don't find anything else, probably i'll choose this one) Stylizer ( also might be my choice, but it's black interface kills me, also extremy noob-oriented, i even couldn't find a way to see the source code) Some of the features i am looking for: grouping by comments like here snippets autocomplete, if i type for instance f-s, it should recognize and expand it to "font-size" property color picker The editor must have at least the first feature that i listed above. Sorry for my poor english.

  I'm using JetBrains PhpStorm, which is probably the most epic IDE I've ever used. The question is simple. How do I add Compass syntax support to it? I've got it installed, it renders and works, but PhpStorm still complains about undefined imports and mixins. How can I resolve this? Can Compass be included as an external library? Edit: I'd just like to note that this feature request is for the RubyMine IDE (also by JetBrains), it's not for PhpStorm/WebStorm.

• Add Flickr RSS feed to Page via SimplePie

  Hi all. I'm trying to add my recently uploaded flickr feed onto a site. I've followed tutorials with Simple Pie, but can't get what I desire. I need to be able dictate where each image will sit in multiple DIV's rather than just one repeated DIV. Here is a website which seems to do what I want.. wearecondiment.com It basically updates the Static URL inside each seperate DIV.. I cant find the PHP anywhere in there code. Here is the site I plan to add this feature to.. "http://www.openyourheart.org.uk" I'll make a new page and template of square DIVs where each photo will sit. The aim of it will basically be so that people can upload their own images to display in the campaign and automatically appear on the site. It would also be great if somehow the image could crop to the size of each square/rectangle. Any ideas? Cheers, Bradley

In Google, there's a tutorial show about I need to extend ServiceAdapter class in Java-side, which extends Invoke method. Do I need to extend other class instead of this to do what I want? How to configure the message-config.xml to get the result like I describe above?

• Retrieve input and output parameters for SQL stored procs and functions?

  For a given SQL stored proc or function, I'm trying to obtain its input and output parameters, where applicable, in a Winforms app I'm creating to browse objects and display their parameters and other attributes. So far I've discovered the SQL system function object_definition, which takes a given sysobjects.id and returns the text of that object; also discovered via search this post which describes extracting the parameters in the context of a app using the ADO.NET method DeriveParameters in conjunction with some caching for better performance; and for good measure found some helpful system stored procs from this earlier post on Hidden Features of SQL Server. I'm leaning towards implementing the DeriveParameters method in my C# app, since parsing the output of object_definition seems messy, and I haven't found a hidden feature in that post so far that would do the trick. Is DeriveParameters applicable to both functions and stored procs for purposes of retreiving their parameters, and if so, could someone please provide an example?
