  • How secure are third party Ubuntu (APT) repository mirrors

We have locally an Ubuntu mirrors to save a lot of traffic (our external traffic is not free) So whenever I apt-get install "program" it gets from that repository. the question is...basically they can substitute any package with their own? So it's 100% on my own risk and I can be hacked easily on any apt-get upgrade or a-g install or a-g dist-upgrade? for example the very basic ones like "telnet" or any other.

  • Cinema4D XML scene not rendering texture

    I exported a basic Cinema4D scene as XML (File Export Cinema 4D XML) then opened up the xml in Cinema4D and it looses the reference to the texture applied. If I open up the original c4d file and render it I can see my texture applied. If I open up the exported xml file and render it the texture is missing. Any way to get around that ?

  • High I/O latency with software RAID, LUKS encrypted and LVM partitioned KVM setup

    I found out a performance problems with a Mumble server, which I described in a previous question are caused by an I/O latency problem of unknown origin. As I have no idea what is causing this and how to further debug it, I'm asking for your ideas on the topic. I'm running a Hetzner EX4S root server as KVM hypervisor. The server is running Debian Wheezy Beta 4 and KVM virtualisation is utilized through LibVirt. The server has two different 3TB hard drives as one of the hard drives was replaced after S.M.A.R.T. errors were reported. The first hard disk is a Seagate Barracuda XT ST33000651AS (512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical sector size), the other one a Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (AF) ST3000DM001-9YN166 (512 bytes logical and physical sector size). There are two Linux software RAID1 devices. One for the unencrypted boot partition and one as container for the encrypted rest, using both hard drives. Inside the latter RAID device lies an AES encrypted LUKS container. Inside the LUKS container there is a LVM physical volume. The hypervisor's VFS is split on three logical volumes on the described LVM physical volume: one for /, one for /home and one for swap. Here is a diagram of the block device configuration stack: sda (Physical HDD) - md0 (RAID1) - md1 (RAID1) sdb (Physical HDD) - md0 (RAID1) - md1 (RAID1) md0 (Boot RAID) - ext4 (/boot) md1 (Data RAID) - LUKS container - LVM Physical volume - LVM volume hypervisor-root - LVM volume hypervisor-home - LVM volume hypervisor-swap - … (Virtual machine volumes) The guest systems (virtual machines) are mostly running Debian Wheezy Beta 4 too. We have one additional Ubuntu Precise instance. They get their block devices from the LVM physical volume, too. The volumes are accessed through Virtio drivers in native writethrough mode. The IO scheduler (elevator) on both the hypervisor and the guest system is set to deadline instead of the default cfs as that happened to be the most performant setup according to our bonnie++ test series. The I/O latency problem is experienced not only inside the guest systems but is also affecting services running on the hypervisor system itself. The setup seems complex, but I'm sure that not the basic structure causes the latency problems, as my previous server ran four years with almost the same basic setup, without any of the performance problems. On the old setup the following things were different: Debian Lenny was the OS for both hypervisor and almost all guests Xen software virtualisation (therefore no Virtio, also) no LibVirt management Different hard drives, each 1.5TB in size (one of them was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS, the other one I can't tell anymore) We had no IPv6 connectivity Neither in the hypervisor nor in guests we had noticable I/O latency problems According the the datasheets, the current hard drives and the one of the old machine have an average latency of 4.12ms.

In contrast to regular installation, we 1st download the .exe or .deb and install it. So, how is it possible via web?   • raid 6 vs raid 10? which would you choose.

    my choice would be raid 6 for a file server since you can lose two drives and it does not matter which set of two can die. from what i understand with raid 10 you can lose two drives but if they happen to be off the same raid 1 then you are a out of luck? any suggestions? basic file server with about 200gb of data and it would act as a single point of backup for other workstations and servers. thanks in advance.

  • How to compare mp3, flac audio data in a file, ignoring header data (ID3 tag) etc.?

    I've backed up some audio files up in 2 places and added ID3 tags into one backup but not the other, since time has passed my own memory has faded on whether the backups are actually the same, but now one has ID3 data and the other doesn't, basic binary compare will fail and inspection will be cumbersome.   • Local Apache on Windows XP not finishing page requests

    I have Apache 2.2.11 installed locally on my Windows XP (SP3) dev machine, which I setup about 3 months ago. I have just started having a strange problem in the last few week. Apache is serving some basic PHP applications like phpMyAdmin. When I make a page request, Apache appears to not finish serving all resources for that page. Firefox shows the "Transferring data from servername..." message, and the page never completes. The same problem happens in Internet Explorer too. I can sometimes tell which resource it is waiting on, because most of the page will render except for some image or similar resources. (Not sure why Firebug doesn't show this) It doesn't have the problem every page request - for page requests where most of the resources are cached in my browser, the page request will work with no problems. Or pages that are very light will work with no problems. However, if I "hard" refresh the page, I will have this problem (probably because it is requesting all page resources) Does anyone know what this could be? It is so strange that it has only just started happening - and I did not make any changes to my system (that I am aware of) I tried playing with the Apache ThreadsPerChild setting, but it did not seem to make a difference. UPDATE: I have been doing some more tests. I have been serving the most basic of pages, just a plain HTML file: <html> <body> <h1>testing</h1> </body> </html> If I request this page multiple times in a row, AND each request occurs immediately after the previous has completed, then 50% of the time the request will time out. However, if I put a 1-2 second gap between requests, then there is no problem. This correlates to what I have observed when the brower requests a real application page. When the browser has nothing cached, then all of the page resources are requested from the browser in a short amount of time - this appears to trigger the problem. UPDATE2: Nathan Long has helped me understand the issue a little better with the server-status page (see below). It is weird, it is like the server has a hickup sending data to the client. The client sits there waiting forever for data that never arrives. Closing the client process does not terminate the connection on the server - the server still has active threads for each previously attempted connection, but they just sit there - not sending any data and never terminating. (even though the client is now closed) Only a restart of the server seems to terminate them.

    This topic, creating a mechanism for redirection from HTTP to HTTPS on a Windows 2008 server running IIS 7.0 is a much written-about topic on the Internet. How this is done is really not so much my issue. My issue is more of explaining why this can't be done with the standard HTTP Redirect module that ships with Windows 2008 IIS 7.0. Instead, there are other methods needed that are more arduous. First, the IIS 6.0 method requires no externally available modules nor does it require any additional modifications to the web.config or any type of other development effort. It's outlined here: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/dorr/archive/2009/01/13/how-to-force-redirection-from-http-to-https-on-iis-6-0.aspx And, you can see the basic steps are to run the snap-in, get the properties on the site, and do some modifications. Presto, you have the HTTP -- HTTP redirect setup. Now, on the IIS 7.0 platform, it doesn't seem this simple. An initial search found the following site: http://www.sslshopper.com/iis7-redirect-http-to-https.html Which has two separate approcates: 1. Involves installing a separately available Microsoft module -- URL Rewrite Module, and then adding XML to the web.config. 2. Custom Error Page. ...there might be other methods, but these are the basic ones and the first is listed as the primary method. But wait...There exists on the IIS 7.0 an HTTP Redirect Module. So...why can't I use the HTTP Redirect Module to do this very thing? This is really my big question. I need to know this because my management is going to insist I use the HTTP Redirect Module and set up the HTTP to HTTPS redirect in a similar fashion to how we do in IIS 6.0. Can someone please explain to me, in clean, simple, easy to understand, terms that both I and my management can understand as to why I need to go get the URL Rewrite Module and install that on the server and make the web.config changes suggested by the article instead of simply using the HTTP Redirect module that's already installed on the site?     I am running the command time 7zr a -mx=9 sample.7z sample.log to gauge how long it takes to compress a file larger than 1GB. The results I get are as follows. real 10m40.156s user 17m38.862s sys 0m5.944s I have a basic understanding of the difference but don't understand how this plays a role in the time in takes to compress the file. For example should I be looking at real or user + sys?
