  • Which Qt4 Widgets whould I be using? [closed]

    I'm using Qt 4 to design an IDE but I'm having a hard time with the GUI design. On the left side I want to put a widget that shows the files on the current project and on the left side a similar one but with the classes, methods, etc... Which widget should I use the Tree view or the tree widget? Also, I want to have a tab widget in the center with a text edit and this items the tree widgets and the tab widget to move and resize according to the window size. How can I accomplish this?

  • Garbled screen after sleep/suspend with nVidia 8800M GTS Ubuntu 11.10

    Just did a clean install of 11.10, have been using it (and enjoying it!) for about a day now. But it seems that every time I resume from a sleep or blank screen after idling for a while, my desktop, as well as any programs on the screen get "garbled" I had a few windows open and all displayed the same gui glitching except for Chromium (I am guessing because it was minimized to the Unity Launcher, and not currently on the screen when I woke the PC up.) Anyone know what might be causing this, and how I might be able to fix it? I am using a Gateway P-6860FX with a C2D 1.8GHz, and nVidia 8800M GTS 512mb.   • LNK2001 error when compiling windows forms application with VC++ 2008

    I've been trying to write a small application which will work with mysql in C++. I am using MySQL server 5.1.41 and MySQL C++ connector 1.0.5.   • Kanban Tools Review

    The first two sessions on Sunday were Collaboration and why it is so hard and the following, which was a perfect following session was on Kanban.  While in that second session two online Saas Style Tools were mentioned; AgileZen and Leankit.  I decided right then and there that I would throw together some first impressions and setup some sample projects.  I did this by setting up an account and creating the projects. Agile Zen Account Creation Setting up the initial account required an e-mail verification, which is understandable.  Within a few seconds it was mailed out and I was logged in. Setting Up the Kanban Board The initial setup of the board was pretty easy.  I maybe clicked around an extra few times, but overall everything I needed to use the tool was immediately available.  The representation of everything was very similar to what one expects in a real Kanban Board too.  This is a HUGE plus, especially if a team is smart and places this tool in a centrally viewable area to allow for visibility. Each of the board items is just like a post it, being blue, grey, green, pink, or one of another few colors.  Dragging them onto each swim lane on the board was flawless, making changes through the work super easy and intuitive. The other thing I really liked about AgileZen is that the Kanban Board had the swim lanes setup immediately.  One can change them, but when you know you immediately need a Ready Lane, Working Lane, and a Complete Lane it is nice to just have them right in front of you in the interface.  In addition, the Backlog is simply a little tab on the left hand side.  This is perfect for the Backlog Queue.  Out of the way, with the focus on the primary items. Once  I got the items onto the board I was easily able to get back to the actual work at hand versus playing around with the tool.  The fact that it was so easy to use, fast and easy UX, and overall a great layout put me back to work on things I needed to do versus sitting a playing with the tool.  That, in the end is the key to using these tools. LeanKit Kanban Account Creation Setting up the account got me straight into the online tool.  This I thought was pretty cool. Setting Up the Kanban Board Setting up the Kanban Board within Leankit was a bit of trouble.  There were multiple UX issues in regard to process and intuitiveness.  The Leankit basically forces one to design the whole board first, making no assumptions about how the board should look.  The swim lanes in my humble opinion should be setup immediately without any manipulation with the most common lanes;  ready, working, and complete. The other UX hiccup that I had a problem with is that as soon as I managed to get the swim lanes into place, I wanted to remove the redundant Backlog Lane.  The Backlog Lane, or Backlog Bucket should be somewhere that I accidentally added as a lane.  Then on top of that I screwed up and added an item inside the lane, which then prevented me from deleting the lane.  I had to go back out of the lane manipulation, remove the item, and then remove the excess lane.  Summary Leankit wasn't a bad interface, it just wasn't as good as AgileZen.  The AgileZen interface was just better UX design overall.  AgileZen also presents a much better user interface graphical design all together.  It is much closer to what the Kanban Board would look like if it were a physical Kanban Board.  Since one of the HUGE reasons for Kanban is to increase visibility, the fact the design is similar to what a real Kanban Board is actually a pretty big deal.   • mysqld refusing connections from localhost

    My mail server (Ubuntu 10.04) uses mysql for virtual domains, virtual users. For some reason, mysqld has started refusing connections from localhost. I see these in the mail server log: Oct 6 00:31:14 apollo postfix/trivial-rewrite[16888]: fatal: proxy:mysql:/etc/postfix/mysql-virtual_domains.cf(0,lock|fold_fix): table lookup problem and: Oct 7 13:39:15 apollo postfix/proxymap[25839]: warning: connect to mysql server 127.0.0.1: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 0 I also get the following in auth.log: Oct 6 22:33:31 apollo mysqld[31775]: refused connect from 127.0.0.1 Telnet to the local port: root@apollo:/var/log/mysql# telnet localhost 3306 Trying ::1... Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. Connection closed by foreign host. root@apollo:/var/log/mysql# I am not sure why this started happening, but there was a disk failure in a RAID 1 pair a bit earlier that day. So it's possible I have a damaged config file or something. But mail was working for at least an hour after the drive event, so who knows for sure? phpmyadmin works fine, and the databases themselves look like they're intact. I think/believe that selinux and iptables are disabled and not running. So ... why is mysqld refusing connections from localhost? What should I check? What processes might cause this if a .conf file or possibly a binary was damaged? Which other log files might contain clues? I've enabled "general logging" in /etc/mysql/my.cnf, but I get no interesting or informative entries there. Thanks, m00tpoint

  • OSX Lion - sh: mysql command not found

    I have pretty simple issue I believe. I have successfully installed mysql etc. I do not have any problems with running "mysql" command from terminal [ bash ]. Suddenly, when my application tried to run mysql command I got error: sh: mysql: command not found.. In terminal, when I type sh and then mysql I can log in to mysql without any problems. I have added mysql to PATH in .bash_profile and I suspect this is why sh cannot see it. I have cp .bash_profile to .profile but it did not do the trick, any ideas how can I fix this issue?

  • Fulltext search for django : Mysql not so bad ? (vs sphinx, xapian)

    I am studying fulltext search engines for django. It must be simple to install, fast indexing, fast index update, not blocking while indexing, fast search. After reading many web pages, I put in short list : Mysql MYISAM fulltext, djapian/python-xapian, and django-sphinx I did not choose lucene because it seems complex, nor haystack as it has less features than djapian/django-sphinx (like fields weighting). Then I made some benchmarks, to do so, I collected many free books on the net to generate a database table with 1 485 000 records (id,title,body), each record is about 600 bytes long. From the database, I also generated a list of 100 000 existing words and shuffled them to create a search list. For the tests, I made 2 runs on my laptop (4Go RAM, Dual core 2.0Ghz): the first one, just after a server reboot to clear all caches, the second is done juste after in order to test how good are cached results.   • Is there any er diagram tool in Windows that I can use to connect to a MySQL 4.1 database in Unix?

    I have a few test databases in some Unix SUSE 8 servers and initially the plan was to find some tools which can directly create the ERD straight from the server until someone told me that I can find tools to connect from the Windows PC straight to the Unix MySQL database. So I saw MySQL query analyzer which can do this but unfortunately there are no options to create an ERD. So are there any tools, preferably open source or free which can do this? I've done some basic googling but didn't know what is the exact terms to use to search for this and have so far found nothing useful yet. Updates: I just found out that the latest version of workbench doesn't work MySQL 4.1 Enterprise Edition which is the version that I have! And I try to use fabFORCE DBDesigner but I can't even connect at all using that one :( What can work for this version of MySQL?

  • What are the Open Source alternatives to WPF/XAML?

    If we've learned anything from HTML/CSS it's that, declarative languages (like XML) work best to describe User Interfaces because: It's easy to build code preprocessors that can template the code effectively. The code is in a well defined well structured (ideally) format so it's easy to parse. The technology to effectively parse or crawl an XML based source file already exists. The UIs scripted code becomes much simpler and easier to understand. It simple enough that designers are able to design the interface themselves. Programmers suck at creating UIs so it should be made easy enough for designers. I recently took a look at the meat of a WPF application (ie. the XAML) and it looks surprisingly familiar to the declarative language style used in HTML. It's apparent to me that the current state of desktop UI development is largely fractionalized, otherwise there wouldn't be so much duplicated effort in the domain of graphical user interface design (IE. GTK, XUL, Qt, Winforms, WPF, etc). There are 45 GUI platforms for Python alone It's seems reasonable to me that there should be a general purpose, open source, standardized, platform independent, markup language for designing desktop GUIs. Much like what the W3C made HTML/CSS into. WPF, or more specifically XAML seems like a pretty likely step in the right direction. Now that the 'browser wars' are over should we look forward to a future of 'desktop gui wars?' Note: This topic is relatively subjective in the attempt to be 'future-thinking.' I think that desktop GUI development in its current state sucks ((really)hard) and, even though WPF is still in it's infancy, it presents a likely solution to the problem.   • Using SVN with a MySQL database ran by xamp - yes or no? (and how?)

    For my current PHP/MySQL project (over a group of 4 to 5 team members), we are using this setup: each developer codes and test on his localhost running xamp, and upload to a test server via SVN. One question that I have now is how to synchronize the MySQL database? I may have added a new table to project and the PHP code references to it, so my other team members would need to access that table for my code (once they got it through SVN) to work. We are not always working in the same office all the time, so having a LAN and a MySQL server in the office is not feasible. So I am toying with 2 solutions Setup a test DB online, and have all the coders will reference to that, even when coding from localhost. Downside: you can't test if you happen not have internet access. Somehow sync the localhost copy of MySQL DB. Is that kind of silly? And if I do consider this, how do I do it? (which folder do I add to SVN?) (I guess a related question is how to automatically update the live MySQL DB from the testing DB, regardless if it is on a remote server or hosted locally via xamp. Any advice regarding that would be welcomed!)

  • Possible to recover mysql root pass with sudo server access?

    I've inherited development for a website on vps hosting, and have login info for a user with sudo privileges, but don't have the password for the mysql root user. After digging around a little, it looks like the only way to fix this is to stop mysql (something like this: http://waoewaoe.wordpress.com/2010/02/03/recover-reset-mysql-root-password/). But because the website it's serving is currently in production, I'm hoping you guys can enlighten me to any potential consequences (or let me know if there's typically a file where the password would be accessible). a) during the time mysql is stopped, information in the database won't be accessible, right -- even by other users? b) will resetting the root password have any impact on other users after mysql has restarted? Will their username/passwords still be valid? The current application is using an account with limited privileges to read/write to the database, and while 5min downtime in the middle of the night would probably go unnoticed, half a day while I tie up loose ends/figure out what I screwed up will land in me hot water.   • Pros/Cons of MySQL vs Postgresql for production Ruby on Rails environment?

    I will soon be switching from sqlite3 to either postgres or mysql. What should I consider when making this decision? Is mysql more suited for Rails than postgres in some areas and/or vice versa? Or, as I somewhat suspect, does it not really matter either way? Another factor that might play into my decision is the availability of tools to data pump my test data from the sqlite3 db to my new one. Is there anything that ActiveRecord provides natively to do this or any decent plugins/gems to help with this task?   • GUI Design - Roleselection with two lists, selected roles on the right, or left list?

    Hi, image two lists for selecting roles for a new user creation in an administrator frontend. One list has all available roles in it and another has the selected roles in it. Between those lists are buttons to move elements from one list to another. Thus the layout is horizontal with [List] [Buttons] [List]. Now to the question: Should the selected elements be on the left, or the right list? Intuitively some people I asked say, that the selected elements have to be on the right list. But some other people follow some sort of guideline that says, that the more important stuff in a frontend has to be on the left side. Also they think the selected elements are more important than the non-selected and so the selected ones have to be on the left side. Whats your opinion?
