• Applications Menu disappeared

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, classic desktop without effects. Once the indicator-applet-complete (right part of the top panel) had been disappeared. I found how to fix it: Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, then "Add to the Panel", where choose "Indicator Applet Complete" to add. Now, the left part of the top panel (Applications Menu) has been disappeared! If I do Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, I can add only individual Menu sections like Internet, Office, Settings etc. But how to get back the full Menu as it ought to be?

• The Apple iPad &ndash; I&rsquo;m gonna get it!

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Well, heck, here comes another non-techie blogpost. You know I’m a geek, so I love gadgets! I found it RATHER interesting to see all the negative news on the blogosphere about the iPad. The main bitch points are - No Multi tasking No Flash Just a bigger iPhone. So here’s the deal! My view is, the above 3 are EXACTLY what I had personally hoped for in the Apple iPad. Before the release, I had gone on the record saying - “If the Apple Tablet is able to run full fledged iTunes (so I can get rid of iTunes on my desktop, I don’t like iTunes on Windows), can browse the net, can read PDFs, and will be under $1000, I’ll buy it”. Well, so, the released iPad wasn’t exactly like my dream tablet. The biggest downer IMO was it’s inability to run full iTunes. But, really, in retrospect, I like the newly released iPad. And here is why. No Multi tasking and No Flash, means much better battery life. Frankly, I rarely multi task on my laptop/desktop .. yeah I know my OS does .. but ME – I don’t multi task, and I don’t think you do either!! As I type this blogpost, I have a few windows running behind the scenes, but they are simply waiting for me to get back to them. The only thing truly running and I am making use of, other than this blogost, is media player playing some music – which the iPad can do. Also, I am logged into IM/Email – which again, iPad can do via notifications. It does the limited multitasking I need, without chewing down on batteries. Smart thinking, precisely the reason I love the iPhone. I don’t want a bulky battery consuming machine. Lack of flash? Okay sure, I can’t see Hulu on my iPad. That’s some loss. I can see youtube. Also, per Adobe I can’t see some porn sites, which I don’t want to see on my iPad. But, Flash is heavy. Especially flash video. My dream is to see silverlight run on the iPhone and iPad. No flash = not such a big loss. Speaking of battery life – 10 hours is plenty. I haven’t been away from electricity for that long usually, so I’m okay with charging it up when it runs low. It’s really not such a big deal honestly. Finally, eBook functionality – wow! I went on the record saying, eBook readers are not for me, but seriously, the iPad is perfect for my eBook needs at least. And as far it being just a bigger iPhone? I’ve always wanted a bigger iPhone, precisely for the eBook reading experience. I love my iPhone, I love the apps on it. The only thing that sucks about the iPhone is battery life, but other than that, it is the best gadget I have ever bought! And something that runs on mobile chips, is that thin, and those newly written apps .. mail, calendar .. I am very very excited to get my iPad, which will be the 64gig 3G version. The biggest plus in an iPad ……… no contract on data. I am *hoping*, this means that I can buy a SIM card in Europe, and use the iPad here. That would be killer awesome! But hey, if I had to pick downers in the iPad, they would be - - I wish they had a 128G Version. Now that we have a good video viewing machine, I know I’d chew up space quickly.- Sync over WIFI, seriously Apple.  Both for iPhone and iPad.- 3 month wait!!- Existing iPhone users should get a discount on the iPad data plan.   Ive got a clients company site with decent PR, backlinks and search engines rankings. The client wants to change their comapany name and therfore URL, i will set up a rediect between the old site and the new site. But i was wandering is their a way to tell Google that they are moving while retaining all your rankings ? It is the same people, services, office building same everything just rebranded under a different name and url. Additionaly if their is a way to do this, how does google stop you buying expired domains and just pointing them onto your site, for instance i could buy several PR3 domains all relating to the same sector and point them at my site or would google catch on to this ?

• How to negate current window in gnome shell?

  I dislike that most websites use a black font on white background for their sites, as it gets too tiresome for me to read. Back in the days of 11.04, using Gnome2 with compiz, there actually was a Negative feature that could negate the content of any window, making the background black and the font white. Much easier on the eyes for me. Yet since 11.10, using gnome shell with mutter, I have no idea if there is something alike out there. Hence my question: How do I negate the currently active window in gnome shell? I am not interested in alternative methods, e.g. user styles. I am aware of their existence but I find it much easier to just invert the screen by the hit of a key shortcut. I also want the solution to be application-agnostic. As I also from time to time would want to invert libre-office or some other glaringly white application.

• Deterministic Multiplayer RTS game questions?

  I am working on a cross-platform multiplayer RTS game where the different clients and a server(flash and C#), all need to stay deterministically synchronised. To deal with Floatpoint inconsistencies, I've come across this method: http://joshblog.net/2007/01/30/flash-floating-point-number-errors/#comment-49912 which basically truncates off the nondeterministic part: return Math.round(1000 * float) / 1000; Howewer my concern is that every time there is a division, there is further chance of creating additional floatpoint errors, in essence making it worse? . So it occured to me, how about something like this: function floatSafe(number:Number) : Number {return Math.round(float* 1024) / 1024; } ie dividing with only powers of 2 ? What do you think? . Ironically with the above method I got less accurate results: trace( floatSafe(3/5) ) // 0.599609375 where as with the other method(dividing with 1000), or just tracing the raw value I am getting 3/5 = 0.6 or Maybe thats what 3/5 actually is, IE 0.6 cannot really be represented with a floatpoint datatype, and would be more consistent across different platforms?

  Everytime I want to launch an office program, I begin typing "of" in the launcher, and... pictures of lightly-clothed ladies show up. Not the end of the world, but because I do this a lot in front of customers and bosses, it is often embarrassing. I have already disabled Zeitgeist and "recently used". Banshee does not have any Zeitgeist item in Edit > Preferences > Extensions. Is there a way to disable this "Music" section in the launcher suggestions? Or maybe I just must stop playing dance music via Banshee...

• How do I push code to github on shutdown?

  I switch between working at home and the office, and sometimes, like today, I forget to run a git commit/push. (I find it easy to ignore the command line since I'm still kind of a beginner, there.) How can I make it so that when I shut down my Ubuntu OS, it will follow this process: Check my local code against the github server, executing the rest of this script only if I've made newer changes. Add all new files. Make commits with a basic default comment. Push all changed code to origin master. If anyone knows how to do this, it would be a major assist. Also, anyone know how to do it for Mac OSX? :D

• How to disable DisplayInfo for Intel i810 when there is no xorg.conf

  I'm testing Ubuntu 12.04 on an office desktop. This machine has an integrated Intel i810. This very machine used to run Ubuntu (or kubuntu) quite well, until the natty narwhal release, when the xserver started freezing. This seems to be caused by an issue with a call to the video bios, which can be circumvented by disabling the option DisplayInfo. I tried creating an xorg.conf by using Xorg -configure, but it produced an error after trying to make a file. I did have a file, and I put it in /etc/X11 with DisplayInfo false (maybe it wants "disabled"?), but it wouldn't boot at all until I removed that xorg.conf. There is no 10-monitor.conf file either. All I want to do is set the appropriate option so that my intel display doesn't freeze. Is there any other way I can disable the DisplayInfo? Andrew
