• Visual Studio 2008 Unexpected Error on Project Checkout with VSS 2005

  I've encountered an odd misbehavior of VS 2008's integration with Visual Source Safe 2005. Situation occurs when I fire up VS2008 when a project is checked out to someone else, and later they check the project back in, while I still hold the VS2008 open. If I at that time add a new item, VS2008 tells me that my action has caused a check out of the project and a new version has been loaded from source control. Fair enough, but thereafter I get an error dialog stating "Visual Studio has encountered an unexpected error" with OK at every subsequent action, such as save file and search text, making it almost unusable. This is overcome by closing VS (which pops the error dialog once more) and restarting. Is there some kind of fix or workaround to this (besides the obvious ones: "don't try to check out the project when it's checked out to someone else", or "get latest version if you think the other person may have checked the project back in")?

  Hello, I'm writing a web app which will allow creation of events. An event can have a title as well as a description amongst other things. The app needs to be multilingual. So I have 4 tables for localization: ResourceTypes, ResourceKeys, Resources, and Locales. A resource key can have multiple values in Resources table for different locales. So Resources is a many to many table between ResourceKeys and Locales. So in the event table I want to have a resourceKey for its title as well as a resourceKey for its description. So my question is, is it OK from database-design perspective to have two foreign keys from a table into another table? Has anybody used a better approach in such a scenario?

• Reading a document's content from the gdata API?

  Hi, I'm using the java library to access the gdata api. I just want to be able to print the contents of a document. I setup my project to list all the docs in my feed, now that I have a document listing, I want to print its contents: for (DocumentListEntry entry : feed.getEntries()) { // Ok, how do we print the doc's contents now? entry.getContents(); } It looks like we're supposed to get the URL from the entry, then read the contents at the URL ourselves. I found a post stating that this is how we get that URL: MediaContent content = (MediaContent)entry.getContent(); String url = content.getUri(); but when I try to read from it, I get an html response saying 'this content has moved'. I read that this is because we have to authenticate our http-read method, but I'm not sure how to do that. Is there really no built-in way to do this? Thanks

• How to CompareTo two Object without known about their real type

  I have to implement a one linked list but it should put object in appropriate position. Everything was OK when I use it in conjunction with specific class, but when I tried make it universal and argument of method insert was Object some problem appeared. When I want to input Object in right position I should use CompareTo method, but there isn't method in Object class! The problem is how to compare two object elements without known about their real types. Maybe I should use generic class type? But what about CompareTo? Or maybe combine with Element class and place CompareTo there? • Server Side of UpdatePanel don't understand PartialPostback

  This erros seems to happen randomly and in the whole system. Sometimes when we click in a button, or even try to login, a alert comes up with the "Message cannot be parsed" error. Funny thing is that when I turn on fiddler, the thing stars to function ok. Sniffing the connection via smsniff i was able to capture the traffic of the bugged and working postbacks. The contents were suposed to be rendered in a update panel. It appears that the "bugged" response is the whole page again, what would cause such a thing? • Exceptions using CruiseControl.NET

  I recently updated to CC.NET 1.5 and I'm now getting some strange exceptions. On one project I get: - ThoughtWorks.CruiseControl.Core.CruiseControlException: Source control operation failed: svn: Can't create a character converter from native encoding to 'UTF-8' This happens when CC is checking a subversion repository for any mods. If I run the actual command line CC says is failing it works and returns an empty XML (there are no mods). Some other projects also fail to check mods with another "Source control operation failed" exception but no further info. Again the command is an "svn log" which when run from command line works ok. I'm using subversion 1.4.5 client side and my source repository exists on a separate box than my build server. Anyone got any ideas?

• MySqlDateTime to System.DateTime conversion

  Ok I'm very new to databases and C# in general, but I'm using a piece of code that exports dataset data to an Excel file, and its taking issue with the date/time format. I'm using the MySQL connector so the rowtype is MySql.Data.Types.MySqlDateTime. Is there any quick way to convert it into System.DateTime so I can slot it straight into the case statement? Here's a link to the code I used, I copied it verbatim so I've not copied and pasted it here.   This query gives an error: select ep, case when ob is null and b2b_ob is null then 'a' when ob is not null or b2b_ob is not null then 'b' else null end as type, sum(b2b_d + b2b_t - b2b_i) as sales from table where ... group by ep, type Error: ORA-00904: "TYPE": invalid identifier When I run it with group by ep, the error message becomes: ORA-00979: not a GROUP BY expression The whole query works OK if I remove the lines sum(b2b_d+b2b_t-b2b_i) as sales and group by ..., so the problem should be related to SUM and GROUP BY functions. How can I make this work? Thanks in advance for your help.

• Basic Ruby on Rails Question about routing

  I have a controller without any related model. This controller is to span some informations from various models. I have lots of actions there, which define certain views on the page. What would be the best way to organize routes for this controller. What I would like is to have /dashboard/something point to any action in the dashboard controller. Not actions like new/edit but arbitrary (showstats, etc). With trail and error I made something like this: map.dashboard 'dashboard/:action', :controller => 'dashboard', :action => :action Now it is possible to access those url using helper: dashboard_url('actionname') This approch seems to be working ok, but is this the way to go? I am not quite sure understand, how are the helper method names generated. How to generate same helper names as in basic controllers "action_controller_url" ? That would be more generic and made the code more consistent. Thanks in advance.

For those of you unfamiliar with sitemaps, the priority field is used to signal the importance of a page relative to the others on the same website. It must be a decimal number between 0 and 1. • windbg and symbols

  When I set a breakpoint on one of the methods that appears on top of the stack (!CLRStack), I get lots of these messages for every DLL that the debuggee is referencing including the .NET Framework ones. ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded Further digging into this shows that windbg is not loading every .pdb file that I make available in the symbols path. I've double-checked my symbol's path and it looks OK, but the following commands clearly show that not all PDBs are loaded correctly! 0:000 !sym noisy noisy mode - symbol prompts on 0:000 .reload Reloading current modules ................................................................ • Slug ID's with the same name?

  I want to create slug URL's from a users title in my system. If a user types "The best way's to get slim; period!", then I want the slug to be "the-best-ways-to-get-slim-period". Also, if someone has already created a page with that title I want the slug to be "the-best-ways-to-get-slim-period-1". My question is how can I check the database before a record is created? Ok, obviously I am going to have to perform a check in the database, and then a write. That's 2 queries. Is this the normal way to do it? Also, are there any conventional regular expressions for filtering non alpha/number characters and replacing spaces with hyphens? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

• Reusable socket

  I tryed to create a socket in php and reuse it from other process. I know this can be done with a daemon script but I want to do this without. I created a socket and binded it to a specific port. $sock = socket_create (AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, SOL_TCP); socket_set_option ($sock, SOL_SOCKET, SO_REUSEADDR, 1); socket_bind ($sock, 'xx.xx.xx.xx', 10000); socket_connect ($sock, $host, $port); And from another php file I did the same thing. But the packets that I send from the 2 file are not "validated" by host. I sniffed all ports and I see that it uses same local and destination port. I don't understand where is the problem. Can you help me with this? It's ok in any other programming language, or any other solution for this. Andrew

• How can I differentiate between the .net WebBrowser component and an actual browser?

  OK, so we have an online downloads store accessed via our software. Recently we've had requests to allow downloads via normal browsers and it's fairly easy just to slap a download page on. The problem is that it would be confusing to people having two download links, one for the software and one for their web browser, so we want to differentiate between the two and only show the relevant download link. From what I've gathered, the .net WebBrowser component is the same as IE and uses the same User Agent, so we can't use that unless we subclass the WebBrowser in the software to make it use a specific User Agent. It's the more sensible option, but we'd have to roll out another updated version, which is less than ideal. Are there any other ways to tell if someone's accessing a site via the .net component? My only other alternative is to copy the store to a different address with the different download links and send people there. Again this is doable, but not ideal.

  Hi guys. Thanks in advance for any help received. I want to allow our client to enter a URL into a text field which then checks whether the URL exists and works. There are 3 possible outcomes I want to check for: A status of 200 - OK, A status of 500 - Server Error, Or a status of 404 - page not found. When executing the following code in ASP classic I get a status code of 12007 when I should be getting 404. Is this because it can't find a webserver to return a code of 404? What do you think of this one: _manually adding a cookie to each client which includes a secret key _this cookie is not served by the webserver, it is actually copied "by hand" to each client computer _if a client connects to the web-app the server graps that cookie and if the containing secret key is ok, the traditional login box is presented where the user has to enter the user-password combination _communication between client and server is encrypted with https Thus a potential intruder would first need to get the cookie from the clients computer, which is only possible with having access to the clients computer. This would work only for a very small user-base and an admin willing to do this manual work.

• Why my VPN doesn't work anymore?

  I have openvpn server running on debian lenny. There is only one client - and it is running Windows 7 64-bit. This has worked for few months without any problems. And now, let's say for the last 7 days, it doesn't work at all. I connect successfully from client to the server, but I can't access anything through VPN. I have set it up so that all internet traffic is routed through VPN, and now when I connect with the client, the client can't do anything on the net (open any webpage, ping google, anything ...). Can you help me to figure out what's wrong ? I don't know where to start. I've also tried to connect to another openvpn server (I've installed and configured openvpn on another server, and when I try to connect to it result is the same). So I think there's something wrong with client ... • QObject cloning

  I know that Qobjects are supposed to be identities not values eg you cannot copy them and by default the copy constructor and asignment are disabled as explained in qt documentation. But is it possible to create a new Qobject from an existing one using a clone method? Would this be a logic error ? If i say QObject b; QObject a; b.cloneFrom(a); or QObject a = new QBject(); QObject b = new QBject(); b->cloneFrom(a); and the clone method copyes stuff like members etc would this be wrong? And if this is ok can i write my own copy constructor and asignment operator that does just that? Note: i actually want to try this with classes that inherit qobject.

• ANTLR parser hanging at proxy.handshake call

  I am attempting to get a basic ECMAScript parser working, and found a complete ANTLR grammar for ECMAScript 3, which appears to compile ok and produces the appropriate Lexer/Parser/Walker Java files. (Running inside ANTLR IDE plugin for Eclipse 3.5) However, when actually trying to use it with some simple test code (following guide on ANTLR wiki), it just hangs when trying to create the parser: CharStream MyChars = new ANTLRFileStream(FileName); // FileName is valid ES3Lexer MyLexer = new ES3Lexer(MyChars); CommonTokenStream MyTokens = new CommonTokenStream(MyLexer); MyTokens.setTokenSource(MyLexer); ES3Parser MyParser = new ES3Parser( MyTokens ); // hangs here ES3Parser.program_return MyReturn = MyParser.program(); I've tracked down the problem to inside the ES3Parser constructor, where it's calling the function proxy.handshake() - before this line I can successfully do System.out.println("text") but after it I get nothing. So, how do I go about finding out why it's hanging, and stopping it - or even just bypassing this section (can/should I disable debugging?) - so long as that lets it work and allows me to get on with doing useful stuff.

• What's the best Communication Pattern for EJB3-based applications?

  I'm starting a JEE project that needs to be strongly scalable. So far, the concept was: several Message Driven Beans, responsible for different parts of the architecture each MDB has a Session Bean injected, handling the business logic a couple of Entity Beans, providing access to the persistence layer communication between the different parts of the architecture via Request/Reply concept via JMS messages: MDB receives msg containing activity request uses its session bean to execute necessary business logic returns response object in msg to original requester The idea was that by de-coupling parts of the architecture from each other via the message bus, there is no limit to the scalability. Simply start more components - as long as they are connected to the same bus, we can grow and grow. Unfortunately, we're having massive problems with the request-reply concept. Transaction Mgmt seems to be in our way plenty. It seams that session beans are not supposed to consume messages?! Reading http://blogs.sun.com/fkieviet/entry/request_reply_from_an_ejb and http://forums.sun.com/message.jspa?messageID=10338789, I get the feeling that people actually recommend against the request/reply concept for EJBs. If that is the case, how do you communicate between your EJBs? (Remember, scalability is what I'm after) Details of my current setup: MDB 1 'TestController', uses (local) SLSB 1 'TestService' for business logic TestController.onMessage() makes TestService send a message to queue XYZ and requests a reply TestService uses Bean Managed Transactions TestService establishes a connection & session to the JMS broker via a joint connection factory upon initialization (@PostConstruct) TestService commits the transaction after sending, then begins another transaction and waits 10 sec for the response Message gets to MDB 2 'LocationController', which uses (local) SLSB 2 'LocationService' for business logic LocationController.onMessage() makes LocationService send a message back to the requested JMSReplyTo queue Same BMT concept, same @PostConstruct concept all use the same connection factory to access the broker Problem: The first message gets send (by SLSB 1) and received (by MDB 2) ok. The sending of the returning message (by SLSB 2) is fine as well. However, SLSB 1 never receives anything - it just times out. I tried without the messageSelector, no change, still no receiving message. Is it not ok to consume message by a session bean?
