• Learning about the low level

  I'm interested in learning more about the PC from a lower (machine) level. I graduated from a school which taught us concepts using the Java language which abstracted out that level almost completely. As a result I only learned a bit from the one required assembly language course. In order to cram in ASM and quite a few details about architecture, it was hard to get a very deep picture of what is going on there. At work I focus on unix socket programming in C, so i'm much closer to the hardware now, but I feel I should learn a bit more about what streams really are, how memory management and paging works, what goes on when you call "paint()" on a graphics buffer, etc. I missed out on a lot of this and i'm looking for a good resource to get me started. I've heard a lot about the "Pink Book" by Peter Norton (Programmer's Guide to the IBM PC, Programmer's Guide to inside the PC, etc). It seems like this is on the right track, however the original is quite out dated and the newer ones have had conflicting reviews, with many people saying to stay away from it. I'm not sure what the SO crowd thinks about this book or if they have some suggestions for similar books, online resources, etc that may be good primers for this sort of thing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Nginx rewrite for link shortener and Wordpress

  I'm a complete newbie to Nginx, so much so that I followed a online guide to do most of my server setup. I'm trying to learn but I'm still a ways away from understanding it all. So what I'm trying to create is a link shortener that redirects (example.com/x) to (example.com/short.php?id=x). Keep in mind that I'm also running a Wordpress blog on the same domain and plan on using the redirects/shortening for external links. The guide has so far had me add the following rewrites to enable Wordpress pretty URLs: # WordPress pretty URLs: (as per dominiek.com) if (-f $request_filename) { break; } if (-d $request_filename) { break; } rewrite ^(.+)$ /index.php?q=$1 last; # Enable nice permalinks for WordPress: (as per Yawn.it) error_page 404 = //index.php?q=$uri; And if it matters any, it was saved at (/usr/local/nginx/conf/wordpress_params.regular). Additionally, my Wordpress link structure adds "news" to all internal links (example.com/news/post-blah, example.com/news/category, ect.). What's the best way to tackle this setup?

• Objective-C and NSURL: where am I supposed to declare receivedData?

  I have a two classes, a controller called "AppController" and a class called "URLDelegate" that encapsulates the sample NSURL code from Apple's URL Loading System Programming Guide. The guide repeatedly mentions declaring the receivedData instance variable "elsewhere." I assume this means outside of the URLDelagate class, because if I declare it in the URLDelegate class, my controller class can't "see" the data that has been downloaded. I know that data is received, because in my connectionDidFinishLoading function, I have NSLog display the results: NSLog(@"Succeeded! Received %d bytes of data",[receivedData length]); receivedText=[[NSString alloc] initWithData:receivedData encoding: NSASCIIStringEncoding]; NSLog(@"receivedText=%@",receivedText); So I'm a bit stumped with the following questions: Where should I declare receivedData? My controller class? A third class? Can I just declare it like any normal NSMutableData variable? How do I give my URLDelegate class "access" to this variable? E.g., if I declare receivedData in my AppController class, wouldn't I have to instantiate AppController within URLDelegate? But how would this possible if it's the AppController class which is instantiating the URLDelegate class in the first place? Especially with regard to the last question, I feel like I must be overlooking something blindingly obvious and fundamental. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

• Compiling gstreamer plugin in windows

  Hello all, My question: What is the correct way to compile a gstreamer plugin in windows, so that it will be accepted by gstreamer (actually Songbird on top of gstreamer). My setup: I have downloaded the songbird sources following the steps described here and I have a trunk/dependencies/windows-i686-msvc8 directory within my svn sources with all the gstreamer binaries. I have created a gstreamer empty plugin skeleton following the steps detailed in the GStreamer Plugin Writer's Guide, and compiled it against the gstreamer binaries in the Songbird dependencies folder. The compilation was done with VS2010 RC1 (Visual Studio 2008 yelded the same results), using an empty DLL project with the .h and .c files generated using the GStreamer Plugin Writer's Guide. The DLL was lined with libcpmt.lib, libcmt.lib, ws2_32.lib, gobject-2.0.lib, gthread-2.0.lib, gstreamer-0.10-0.lib, glib-2.0.lib, kernel32.lib, nspr4.lib and ignoring all default libraries. I have compiled the files as both .c and .cpp with the same results. Testing: I have installed the Songbird binaries corresponding to the correct svn version, then installed Songbird Developer Tools addon and used it to create an addon for testing my gstreamer plugin. Songbird will not load the pluggin. I have also tried to load it with gst-launch.exe from the trunk/dependencies/windows-i686-msvc8/[...] directory and that generated runtime error R6034: An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Most resources I found for this problem recommended restarting or reinstalling windows :(.

• How to store multiple cookies through PHP Curl

  'SOUP.IO' is not providing any api. So Iam trying to use 'PHP Curl' to login and submit data through PHP. Iam able to login the website successfully(through cUrl), but when I try to submit data through cUrl, it gives me error of 'invalid user'. When I tried to analysed the code and website, I came to know that cUrl is getting values of only 1-2 cookies. Where as when I open the same page in FireFox, it shows me 6-7 cookies related to 'SOUP.IO'. Can some one guide me how to get all these 7 cookies values. • What is the PastryKit Framework?

  I'm trying to find any information I can on the PastryKit Javascript Framework. It appears to be in use on the iPhone User Guide that is displayed on the iPhone itself in Mobile Safari, but I cannot find any documentation or API. If you want to see it in action, open Safari 4, set your user agent to iPhone 3 (In the Develop menu) and check out the guide. Overall, it seems to be a way to write an HTML/CSS/Javascript application that acts like a native iPhone app. When it comes to Javascript, I used the JS Beautifier on (what I assume to be) the framework file and it was over 3,400 lines! Beautified, (again what I assume to be) their implementation of it was over 1,200 lines. On the CSS side, I used Clean CSS on (again what I assume to be) the framework CSS, and it came out to over 700 lines. Their implementation was shy of 500. Does anybody have, or know where to find, any information, documentation, or APIs on PastryKit? Or, can anybody figure out how to implement it?

So that when i access myserver.com/configurator/ Pages will use the correct template I specified In the catalog.xml file, I noticed <catalog_category_default> That seems to be what I am looking for, so I tried: <configurator_default_default> <reference name="root"> <action method="setTemplate"><template>configurator/2columns-right.phtml</template></action> </reference> <reference name="head"> <action method="addCss"><stylesheet>css/configurator.css</stylesheet></action> </reference> <reference name="content"> <block type="configurator/guide" name="timeline" template="configurator/guide/timeline.phtml" /> </reference> </configurator_default_default> But it doesn't change the template for pages within the module. I also tried <configurator_guide_default> But it doesn't pick up the correct template If i put it within the specific page such as <configurator_guide_page1> Then it works.

• Start developing a database application using Oracle + Net Beans

  I have thought of creating my first database application for one of my projects using Oracle and Java. I have chosen Netbeans as my development environment. I have a few questions to getting started. Please bare with me as I'm a complete beginner to Oracle + Netbeans This will be a data intensive (yet still for a college project) database application. I do not need 1000 user concurrency or any other very advanced features but basic stuff such as triggers, stored procedures etc. Will the 11g "Express" (XE) suffice for my requirements? Do i need any Java to Oracle bridge (database connectivity driver eg. ODBC etc) for Netbeans to connect to the oracle database? If yes, what are they? Does Netbeans support Oracle databases natively? Any easy to follow guide on how do i connect to the database and insert/retrieve/display data on a J2SE application? (I know that i should Google this but if there's any guide previously followed by anyone and is considered easy, it would be greatly appreciated.)

• .ico icons not showing up on Windows

  I followed the The Qt Resource System guide and the .ico icons appear on Linux. The icons are not showing up on Windows when I try to run the applicaton from Qt Creator. I suspect a plugin issue based on Qt/C++: Icons not showing up when program is run under windows O.S but I failed to figure out what to do from the guide How to Create Qt Plugins. Is it a plugin issue or why aren't the icons showing up on Windows? If it is a plugin issue: How do I tell my applicaton where to find the qico.dll? Details of the environment: Works on: Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, Qt Creator 2.4.1 and Qt 4.7.4 (64 bit) Fails on: Windows XP SP2 32 bit, Qt Creator 2.4.1 and Qt 4.7.4 (32 bit) Everyting is at its default (as installed out of the box), I did not mess with the settings. resources.qrc <!DOCTYPE RCC><RCC version="1.0"> <qresource> <file>images/spreadsheet.ico</file> </qresource> </RCC> Also tried with <qresource prefix="/">. • Android - Adding external library to project

  Hi, I am having a lot of trouble adding the WEKA library to a project I am working on. I have followed several tutorials that explain how to do this including the Android Developers guide: http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/faq/commontasks.html#addexternallibrary and several of the postings on SO. I have created a folder in my project with the weka.jar file, created a new library (adding the weka.jar file to the library) and included this library in my build path. I have also added the library under the "Order and Export" tab in the project properties. I have also tried importing the jar file so that the actual contents of the jar are extracted into a directory in my project. The end result of all of this is that my project is able to build correctly and without error, but when it comes time to run my code on the emulator I get the following exception: 04-10 22:52:21.051: ERROR/dalvikvm(582): Could not find class 'weka.classifiers.trees.J48', referenced from method edu.usc.student.composure.classifier.GaitClassifierImpl. with J48 being the class I reference in my code. Does anyone have any additional suggestions that I may have overlooked? Thanks!

  I writing a webapp which uploads images to imgur directly. Since all older version of their APIs have been deprecated i am forced to use v3 of their APIs. Unfortunately I am unable to get the API to work. • Configuring the GPS Intermediate Driver

  Hello, I have a Motorola MC75 with an integrated GPS system that I am trying to use for programming. I have done some research on it and tried setting it up by editing the remote registry of the device according to some specifications that I found on the internet on this blog, http://csharponphone.blogspot.com/2007/07/configuring-gps-intermediate-driver.html. I used the smart phone guide at the bottom of the page but to no avail. Currently, I am trying to test it with the GPS application provided in the Windows Mobile 6 SDK samples. The program will load and begin what looks like the search for satellites but will not locate anything. I do not think the GPS is set up correctly. Does anyone have any helpful insight onto this issue or a guide for configuring the GPSID? Thank you in advance. Also, I have already checked and tried some of the config help on MSDN which does not help me either. I will surely vote for the most helpful answer. Thanks, Zach

  Can anyone recommend a good book on Javascript module/application development. I'm a Software Engineer, so I don't need all the intro to programming stuff. What I'm really looking for is: How do you bundle the html/css/javascript together so that you can make one include that will load the whole application. I.e.: <div id="myapplication"></div> ... ... <script src="myapplication.js"> Design patterns are always welcome. I've already read Javascript the good parts, and online guides, but it's hard to find a comprehensive guide/tutorial for specifically this. There's a lot of good "this is a javascript application" and "this is a scalable framework", but I haven't had any luck with "This is how you build a javascript application, including the html and css, and this is how you deliver it nicely". I'm building a small application to start, so I'm not interested in scalability and large-scale development practices, just a nice and comprehensive guide to get me off the ground.

  Pardon me, this is my first attempt at Nginx-Jetty instead of Apache-JK-Tomcat. I deployed myapp.war file to $JETTY_HOME/webapps/, and the app is accessible at the url: http://myIP:8080/myapp I did a default installation of Nginx, and the default Nginx page is accessible at myIP Then, I modified the default domain under /etc/nginx/sites-enabled to the following: server { listen 80; server_name mydomain.com; access_log /var/log/nginx/localhost.access.log; location / { #root /var/www/nginx-default; #index index.html index.htm; proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080/myapp/; } error_page 500 502 503 504 /50x.html; location = /50x.html { root /var/www/nginx-default; } } Now I get the index page of mypp (running in jetty) when I hit myIP, which is good. But all the links are malformed. eg. The link to css is mydomain.com/myapp/css/style.css while what it should have been is mydomain.com/css/style.css. It seems to be mapping mydomain.com to 127.0.0.1:8080 instead of 127.0.0.1:8080/myapp/ Any idea what am missing? Do I need to change anything on the Jetty side too?

  Two ubuntu servers: 10.0.8.2 is the client, 192.168.20.58 is the server. Between the 2 machines, Ping works, ssh works (in both directions). From 10.0.8.2 showmount -e 192.168.20.58 Export list for 192.168.20.58: /imr/nfsshares/foobar 10.0.8.2 mount.nfs 192.168.20.58:/imr/nfsshares/foobar /var/data/foobar -v mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting (null) Found several things online, tried them all and still can't find any log information anywhere. What does it take to get some logging so I have some idea of WHY it won't mount? • "Modern" Ethernet over coax

  So, I've just bought a house. It's reasonably new - built in the early '00s. One of the features that got built in was a cable TV drop in every room. The cabling is gorgeous - there's even a wiring cabinet of sorts in a closet where the cables all tie together to the splitter to the outside line. Of course, my problem is that I only own the one TV. I do, however, own a few computers. What I would love to be able to do is drop a switch in the wiring closet and run 100/1000BASE-T ethernet over the coax in the walls I wouldn't otherwise be using. My fantasy would be if you could get some kind of adapter-plug-thing that would take a coax plug on one side and a cat5/RJ45 plug on the other. Had anyone else done this? Any suggestions? (There are a few other options that suggest themselves - first, I could just use the existing cabling channels and re-run cat5 or 6 through the walls. While tempting, that sounds like more work than I really want to put in, so I'm calling that Plan B. Also, I could just scare up a mess of old 10BASE2 cards and run the house on thinnet, all mid-90s style. While I think I'd get major style points for that, I don't think I can get a 10BASE2 adapter for the new laptop. Also, I have all these super-snazzy gigabit adaptors I'd like to be using. And so forth.)

• Excel data into PowerPoint slides

  I have already found some helpful sites but I'm still unable to do what I want. My Excel file contains few columns and multiple rows. All the data from one row would be in one slide but data from different cells in that one row should go to a specific elements in PP slide. At first, is it possible to export data from an Excel cell into a specific text box in PP? For example, I would like to have all data from the first column of each row go to a Text box 1. Let's say I have 100 rows so I would have 100 slides and each slide would have Text bow 1 with correct data. Text box of slide 66 would have data from the first column of row 66. Then all data from the second column of each row would go to a text bow 2 and so on. I tried to do some macros with bad success. I also tried to use Word outlines and export them into PP (New slide - Slides from Outline) but there seems to be a bug since I got 250 pages of gibberish. I had only two paragraphs and both had one word. First paragraph used Heading 1 style and second paragraph used Normal style. Sites what I have found, use VB and/or some other programming language to create slides from Excel sheets. I have tried to add those VB codes into my macros but none of them hasn't worked so far. Path to the css over proxy looks like this : localhost:8080/e-SPP/css/style.css which doesn't open the CSS if I change the port to 7001 the it works !!! localhost:7001/e-SPP/css/style.css What should I do that CSS and JS are loaded? Absolute position don't work! Div is rendered on the top of document and with 100% width. Why? I can't use a html tables. Version on ms word: 2003

• Why is Safari on my computer rendering all of the colors -- not just for images -- incorrectly?

  I’m not just talking about image color profile issues; every single color that the browser renders is incorrect. It’s like it’s in it’s own color space (or something!). Screenshot: http://drp.ly/DJk1O (Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox) Spot the odd one out? Open this up in Photoshop or similar and try using the eyedropper to select the colour. Safari renders the same hex color completely differently. That color is set using a background-color declaration in CSS, so it should be identical in all four of those browsers. • Firefox not displaying icons in KhanAcademy

  If you don't know what Khan Academy is, check it out. It's awesome. (For testing purpose you may view any video on the website.) My problem -- it's a minor problem, but annoying -- is that in Firefox (Windows 7), the icons below the video are shown as boxes with hex codes in them. This means the icons come from some font that isn't getting downloaded by Firefox. How it appears on Chrome (Windows 7), Safari (Mac OS X) and Stainless (Mac OS X): I checked out the source and found that the font in question is called "FontAwesome". I found this question in S.O. that may explain why this happens -- the CSS does use single quotes to enclose the font's src location. However I don't have any write access to Khan Academy servers so I can't modify the actual website. I want to know if this can be fixed in Firefox, and how. I can run Greasemonkey scripts if that would help. Also, would manually downloading the font and adding it to Windows' Fonts folder help? I tried this with the TTF font, and it does not help.
