    I'm currently backing up using WD My Book World network drive that supports Apple Time Machine. I would like to copy some files from my old laptop backup. However, my old backup isn't showing when you browse the time machine network drive, only the currently used machine is listed (I know there are 3 different backups). How can I access those files not belonging to the currently used laptop?

I still need fairly complete access to the system, though. How can I set things up so that I'm unable to "easily" (ie. within 3-5 mins without rebooting) stop the service or prevent it from running?

    Hi, I have a user who wants to be a administrator of his work PC, he's made some story up about how he can't work without it so I'm told to "fix it" (as if it is a fault he's logged on as a user!). My IT co-workers and I don't login as administrators due to viruses/malware getting a foot hold and setting themselves up as servers to distribute an attack (yes this happened in the past). What is the 'norm' for your network users and how do you handle requests for administrator access? Thanks

Edit; just to clear(er), the movies, podcasts etc which are stored on the iMac, I want to watch them on my iPad without syncing.     I have set up a mercurial repo to be served using apache+wsgi+hgweb on OS X. It is now completely open to anyone who stumbles upon my server on the correct port number.. How can I set it up so that only people with a username+password pair that I approve can pull and/or push from the repo? I know how to very easily achieve this using ssh, but in this specific case the requirement is that the solution doesn't require defining full fledged user accounts on the machine for each person whom I'd like to give access to the repo.

    I currently have a debian server that is running an openvpn server. I also have a dns server (bind9) that I would like give allow access to by the connected openvpn clients, but I am unsure as of how to do this, I already known how to send dns options to the clients using push "dhcp-option DNS x.x.x.x" but I am just unsure how give the clients access to the dns server that is located on the same machine as the vpn server, so if anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.   • Can you password protect access to a directory (to local and networked PCs) in Windows XP Pro?

    I could just compress the directory as a .zip file w/ a password (which I think would just look like a compressed folder w/ a password) but I'd like something with less overhead (i.e., none of the decompression, etc.) Any ideas? Clarification/update: I'd like to have anyone be able to access it from another computer if they know the password. I.e., I don't want them to have to log in as a different user, etc., but, rather just enter a password.

  • CentOS 5: Can't access webserver via http from host OS?

    My server is installed on a guest OS on vmware. It really bugs me because I can't access it from the host OS's browser even though there is no discrepancy between /etc/hosts, /etc/sysconfig/network, httpd.conf files. Issuing ifconfig command also returns the same IP. I have also enabled netwroking in the vmware settings. And I can ping the guest OS's IP from the host. Any insights pls???
