  • Redeclared javascript global variable overrides old value in IE

    - by Yousuf Haider
(creating a separate question after comments on this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2634410/javascript-redeclared-global-variable-overrides-old-value) I am creating a globally scoped variable using the square bracket notation and assigning it a value inside an external js file. In another js file I declare a var with the same name as the one I just created above. Note I am not assigning a value. Since this is a redeclaration of the same variable the old value should not be overriden as described here: http://www.w3schools.com/js/js_variables.asp Create 2 javascript files with the following content : Script1 //create global variable with square bracket notation window['y'] = 'old'; Script2 //redeclaration of the same variable var y; if (!y) y = 'new'; alert(y); //shows New instead of Old in IE Include these 2 files in your html file <html> <head></head> <body> <script type="text/javascript" src="my.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="my2.js"></script> </body> </html> Opening this page in Firefox and Chrome alerts 'old' which is the expected behavior. However in IE 8 the page will actually alert 'new' Any ideas on why this happens on IE ?

  • PHP: prevent invocation of method X from from context != Y

    - by sunwukung
This is a tricky one. I am "emulating" ZF Bootstrapping (surface appearance). Don't ask me why, call it academic interest. So I have a Bootstrap Abstract with a method "run" that iterates over itself to locate any methods prefixed with "init". The application looks for a user defined class which extends this class, in which the user can define any number of methods in this way. However, I want to prevent the user from being able to execute the "run" command of it's parent class, while still exposing the same command for the client code. Anyone got any thoughts/advice/guidance? regards SWK

  • In Objective C, is there a way to call reference a typdef enum from another class?

    - by Adrian Harris Crowne
    It is my understanding that typedef enums are globally scoped, but if I created an enum outside of the @interface of RandomViewController.h, I can't figure out how to access it from OtherViewController.m. Is there a way to do this? So... "RandomViewController.h" #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> typedef enum { EnumOne, EnumTwo }EnumType; @interface RandomViewController : UIViewController { } and then... "OtherViewController.m" -(void) checkArray{ BOOL inArray = [randomViewController checkArray:(EnumType)EnumOne]; }

  • How to filter results by multiple fields?

    - by hadees
I am working on a survey application in ruby on rails and on the results page I want to let users filter the answers by a bunch of demographic questions I asked at the start of the survey. For example I asked users what their gender and career was. So I was thinking of having dropdowns for gender and career. Both dropdowns would default to all but if a user selected female and marketer then my results page would so only answers from female marketers. I think the right way of doing this is to use named_scopes where I have a named_scope for every one of my demographic questions, in this example gender and career, which would take in a sanitized value from the dropdown to use at the conditional but i'm unsure on how to dynamically create the named_scope chain since I have like 5 demographic questions and presumably some of them are going to be set to all.

  • Accessing ViewController's variables from UIActionSheet delegate

    - by VansFannel
Hello. I have the following code: @implementation SendMapViewController NSMutableArray *emails; At this method I create emails array and I add some NSStrings: - (BOOL) peoplePickerNavigationController: (ABPeoplePickerNavigationController *)peoplePicker shouldContinueAfterSelectingPerson: (ABRecordRef)person { ABMultiValueRef emailInfo = ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonEmailProperty); NSUInteger emailCount = ABMultiValueGetCount(emailInfo); if (emailCount > 1) { UIActionSheet *emailsAlert = [[UIActionSheet alloc] initWithTitle:@"Select an email" delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:nil destructiveButtonTitle:nil otherButtonTitles:nil]; emails = [NSMutableArray arrayWithCapacity: emailCount]; for (NSUInteger i = 0; i < emailCount; i++) { NSString *emailFromContact = (NSString *)ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(emailInfo, i); [emails addObject: emailFromContact]; [emailsAlert addButtonWithTitle:emailFromContact]; [emailFromContact release]; } [emailsAlert addButtonWithTitle:@"Cancel"]; [emailsAlert showInView:self.view]; [emailsAlert release]; } else { ... } CFRelease(emailInfo); [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; return NO; } As you can see in code, if there are more than one email I show and UIActionSheet. When user clicks on a button representing and email, I want to execute the following code: - (void)actionSheet:(UIActionSheet *)actionSheet clickedButtonAtIndex:(NSInteger)buttonIndex { if ([emails count] >= buttonIndex) { NSString *contactEmail = (NSString *)[emails objectAtIndex:buttonIndex]; ... } } But emails array hasn't got any email. What I'm doing wrong? I'm developing for iPhone.

  • Global and local variables in my script

    - by Acorn
I'm starting out learning javascript, and tried to write a little script that would make a grid of divs on a page. Here's the script: var tileWidth=50; var tileHeight=100; var leftPos=10; var topPos=10; var columns=10; var rows=10; var spacing=5; $('document').ready(function() { placeTiles(); }); function makeRow() { for (var i=0; i<columns; i++) { $('#canvas').append('<div class="tile" style="left:' + leftPos + 'px;top:' + topPos + 'px;"></div>'); var leftPos = leftPos + tileWidth + spacing; } } function placeTiles() { for (var i=0; i<rows; i++) { makeRow(); var topPos = topPos + tileHeight + spacing; } } At the moment, 100 <div>s get created, all with a top position of 10px and a left position of undefined (for the first <div> in the row) or NaN. What should I be doing differently? Why can't makerow() see my global leftPos variable (and all the other variables for that matter)? Thanks.

  • rails named_scope issue with eager loading

    - by Craig
Two models (Rails 2.3.8): User; username & disabled properties; User has_one :profile Profile; full_name & hidden properties I am trying to create a named_scope that eliminate the disabled=1 and hidden=1 User-Profiles. Moreover, while the User model is usually used in conjunction with the Profile model, I would like the flexibility to be able specify this using the :include = :profile syntax. I have the following User named_scope: named_scope :visible, { :joins => "INNER JOIN profiles ON users.id=profiles.user_id", :conditions => ["users.disabled = ? AND profiles.hidden = ?", false, false] } This works as expected when just reference the User model: >> User.visible.map(&:username).flatten => ["user a", "user b", "user c", "user d"] However, when I attempt to include the Profile model: User.visible(:include=> :profiles).profile.map(&:full_name).flatten I get an error that reads: NoMethodError: undefined method `profile' for #<User:0x1030bc828> Am I able to cross model-collection boundaries in this manner?

  • CDI @Conversation not propagated with handleNavigation()

    - by Thomas Kernstock
    I have a problem with the propagation of a long runnig conversation when I redirect the view by the handleNavigation() method. Here is my test code: I have a conversationscoped bean and two views: conversationStart.xhtml is called in Browser with URL http://localhost/tests/conversationStart.jsf?paramTestId=ParameterInUrl <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core"> <f:metadata> <f:viewParam name="paramTestId" value="#{conversationTest.fieldTestId}" /> <f:event type="preRenderView" listener="#{conversationTest.preRenderView}" /> </f:metadata> <h:head> <title>Conversation Test</title> </h:head> <h:body> <h:form> <h2>Startpage Test Conversation with Redirect</h2> <h:messages /> <h:outputText value="Testparameter: #{conversationTest.fieldTestId}"/><br /> <h:outputText value="Logged In: #{conversationTest.loggedIn}"/><br /> <h:outputText value="Conversation ID: #{conversationTest.convID}"/><br /> <h:outputText value="Conversation Transient: #{conversationTest.convTransient}"/><br /> <h:commandButton action="#{conversationTest.startLogin}" value="Login ->" rendered="#{conversationTest.loggedIn==false}" /><br /> <h:commandLink action="/tests/conversationLogin.xhtml?faces-redirect=true" value="Login ->" rendered="#{conversationTest.loggedIn==false}" /><br /> </h:form> <h:link outcome="/tests/conversationLogin.xhtml" value="Login Link" rendered="#{conversationTest.loggedIn==false}"> <f:param name="cid" value="#{conversationTest.convID}"></f:param> </h:link> </h:body> </html> The Parameter is written to the beanfield and displayed in the view correctly. There are 3 different possibilites to navigate to the next View. All 3 work fine. The beanfield shows up the next view (conversationLogin.xhtml) too: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core"> <h:head> <title>Conversation Test</title> </h:head> <h:body> <h:form> <h2>Loginpage Test Conversation with Redirect</h2> <h:messages /> <h:outputText value="Testparameter: #{conversationTest.fieldTestId}"/><br /> <h:outputText value="Logged In: #{conversationTest.loggedIn}"/><br /> <h:outputText value="Conversation ID: #{conversationTest.convID}"/><br /> <h:outputText value="Conversation Transient: #{conversationTest.convTransient}"/><br /> <h:commandButton action="#{conversationTest.login}" value="Login And Return" /><br /> </h:form> </h:body> </html> When I return to the Startpage by clicking the button the conversation bean still contains all values. So everything is fine. Here is the bean: package test; import java.io.Serializable; import javax.annotation.PostConstruct; import javax.enterprise.context.Conversation; import javax.enterprise.context.ConversationScoped; import javax.faces.event.ComponentSystemEvent; import javax.inject.Inject; import javax.inject.Named; @Named @ConversationScoped public class ConversationTest implements Serializable{ private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; final String CONVERSATION_NAME="longRun"; @Inject Conversation conversation; private boolean loggedIn; private String fieldTestId; @PostConstruct public void init(){ if(conversation.isTransient()){ conversation.begin(CONVERSATION_NAME); System.out.println("New Conversation started"); } loggedIn=false; } public String getConvID(){ return conversation.getId(); } public boolean isConvTransient(){ return conversation.isTransient(); } public boolean getLoggedIn(){ return loggedIn; } public String startLogin(){ return "/tests/conversationLogin.xhtml?faces-redirect=true"; } public String login(){ loggedIn=true; return "/tests/conversationStart.xhtml?faces-redirect=true"; } public void preRenderView(ComponentSystemEvent ev) { // if(!loggedIn){ // System.out.println("Will redirect to Login"); // FacesContext ctx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance(); // ctx.getApplication().getNavigationHandler().handleNavigation(ctx, null, "/tests/conversationLogin.xhtml?faces-redirect=true"); // ctx.renderResponse(); // } } public void setFieldTestId(String fieldTestId) { System.out.println("fieldTestID was set to: "+fieldTestId); this.fieldTestId = fieldTestId; } public String getFieldTestId() { return fieldTestId; } } Now comes the problem !! As soon as I try to redirect the page in the preRenderView method of the bean (just uncomment the code in the method), using handleNavigation() the bean is created again in the next view instead of using the allready created instance. Although the cid parameter is propagated to the next view ! Has anybody an idea what's wrong ? best regards Thomas

  • functions inside or outside jquery document ready

    - by Hans
Up until now I just put all my jQuery goodness inside the $(document).ready() function, including simple functions used in certain user interactions. But functions that don´t require the DOM document to be loaded or are only called afterwards anyway, can be placed outside the $(document).ready() as well. Consider for example a very simple validation function such as: function hexvalidate(color) { // Validates 3-digit or 6-digit hex color codes var reg = /^(#)?([0-9a-fA-F]{3})([0-9a-fA-F]{3})?$/; return reg.test(color); } The function is only called from within the $(document).ready() function though. What is best practice (syntax, speed); placing such a function inside or outside the jquery document ready function?

  • PHP: friend classes and ungreedy caller function/class

    - by avetis.kazarian
Is there any way to get the caller function with something else than debug_backtrace()? I'm looking for a less greedy way to simulate scopes like friend or internal. Let's say I have a class A and a class B. Until now, I've been using debug_backtrace(), which is too greedy (IMHO). I thought of something like this: <?php class A { public function __construct(B $callerObj) {} } class B { public function someMethod() { $obj = new A($this); } } ?> It might be OK if you want to limit it to one specific class, but let's say I have 300 classes, and I want to limit it to 25 of them? One way could be using an interface to aggregate: public function __construct(CallerInterface $callerObj) But it's still an ugly code. Moreover, you can't use that trick with static classes. Have any better idea?

  • SQL Server INSERT, Scope_Identity() and physical writing to disc

    - by TheBlueSky
Hello everyone, I have a stored procedure that does, among other stuff, some inserts in different table inside a loop. See the example below for clearer understanding: INSERT INTO T1 VALUES ('something') SET @MyID = Scope_Identity() ... some stuff go here INSERT INTO T2 VALUES (@MyID, 'something else') ... The rest of the procedure These two tables (T1 and T2) have an IDENTITY(1, 1) column in each one of them, let's call them ID1 and ID2; however, after running the procedure in our production database (very busy database) and having more than 6250 records in each table, I have noticed one incident where ID1 does not match ID2! Although normally for each record inserted in T1, there is record inserted in T2 and the identity column in both is incremented consistently. The "wrong" records were something like that: ID1 Col1 ---- --------- 4709 data-4709 4710 data-4710 ID2 ID1 Col1 ---- ---- --------- 4709 4710 data-4709 4710 4709 data-4710 Note the "inverted", ID1 in the second table. Knowing not that much about SQL Server underneath operations, I have put the following "theory", maybe someone can correct me on this. What I think is that because the loop is faster than physically writing to the table, and/or maybe some other thing delayed the writing process, the records were buffered. When it comes the time to write them, they were wrote in no particular order. Is that even possible if no, how to explain the above mentioned scenario? If yes, then I have another question to rise. What if the first insert (from the code above) got delayed? Doesn't that mean I won't get the correct IDENTITY to insert into the second table? If the answer of this is also yes, what can I do to insure the insertion in the two tables will happen in sequence with the correct IDENTITY? I appreciate any comment and information that help me understand this. Thanks in advance.

  • node.js with SQL Server Native Client 11 scope_identity not being returned

    - by binderbound
I'm having trouble with inserting a value into a database through node.js. Here is the offending code: sql.query(conn_str ,"INSERT INTO Login(email, hash, salt, firstName, lastName) VALUES(?, ?, ?, ?, ?); SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY() AS 'Identity';" , [email, hash, salt, firstName, lastName], function(err, results){ console.log(results) } Unfortunately, the console is just echoing [], meaning results is an empty array, I suppose. Does anyone know why the identity is not being returned? Even if it was null, why isn't results then [{Identity: null }] ? Database is on Azure, which does have a "Scope_Identity" function, and the native client also recognises this function. Using node package "msnodesql" Please Help

  • shared global variables in C

    - by Claudiu
How can I create global variables that are shared in C? If I put it in a header file, then the linker complains that the variables are already defined. Is the only way to declare the variable in one of my C files and to manually put in externs at the top of all the other C files that want to use it? That sounds not ideal.

  • Write a function in c that includes the following sequence of statements [Wont Compile]

    - by Cody
There is a question in my programming languages textbook that is as follows: Write a C function that includes the following sequence of statements: x = 21; int x; x = 42; Run the program and explain the results. Rewrite the same code in C++ and Java and compare the results. I have written code, and played with it in all three languages but I can not even get it to compile. This includes declaring x above the three lines as well as in the calling function (as this question is obviously attempting to illustrate scoping issues) I'd like to explain the results and do the comparisons on my own, as it is an assignment question but I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to how to get this code to compile? Thanks

  • Sharing runtime variables between files

    - by nightcracker
I have a project with a few files that all include the header global.hpp. Those files want to share and update information that is relevant for the whole program during runtime (that data is gathered progressively during the program runs but the fields of data are known at compile-time). Now my idea was to use a struct like this: global.hpp #include <string> #ifndef _GLOBAL_SESSION_STRUCT #define _GLOBAL_SESSION_STRUCT struct session_struct { std::string username; std::string password; std::string hostname; unsigned short port; // more data fields as needed }; #endif extern struct session_struct session; main.cpp #include "global.hpp" struct session_struct session; int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { session.username = "user"; session.password = "secret"; session.hostname = "example.com"; session.port = 80; // other stuff, etc return 0; } Now every file that includes global.hpp can just read & write the fields of the session struct and easily share information. Is this the correct way to do this? NOTE: For this specific project no threading is used. But please (for future projects and other people reading) clarify in your answer how this (or your proposed) solution works when threaded. Also, for this example/project session variables are shared. But this should also apply to any other form of shared variables.

  • How to use named_scope to incrementally construct a complex query?

    - by wbharding
I want to use Rails named_scope to incrementally build complex queries that are returned from external methods. I believe I can get the behavior I want with anonymous scopes like so: def filter_turkeys Farm.scoped(:conditions => {:animal => 'turkey'}) end def filter_tasty Farm.scoped(:conditions => {:tasty => true}) end turkeys = filter_turkeys is_tasty = filter_tasty tasty_turkeys = filter_turkeys.filter_tasty But say that I already have a named_scope that does what these anonymous scopes do, can I just use that, rather than having to declare anonymous scopes? Obviously one solution would be to pass my growing query to each of the filter methods, a la def filter_turkey(existing_query) existing_query.turkey # turkey is a named_scoped that filters for turkey end But that feels like an un-DRY way to solve the problem. Oh, and if you're wondering why I would want to return named_scope pieces from methods, rather than just build all the named scopes I need and concatenate them together, it's because my queries are too complex to be nicely handled with named_scopes themselves, and the queries get used in multiple places, so I don't want to manually build the same big hairy concatenation multiple times.

  • Global javascript variable not accessible in jquery change event

    - by Dan
I have to be missing something simple, but I'm really not sure what. I'm not a JS veteran, so this may be an easy answer - sure hope so :). I have a button that, when clicked, gets JSON data. When a drop-down is changed, I check to see if there is data, if there is, I want to clear it out as the drop-down indicates what data to retrieve when the button is clicked The Code: var selected, $locDialog; var locations = []; $(function() { // Save the selected Name selected = $("#selected option:selected").val(); // Setup Dialog for Locations $locDialog = $('#location-dialog').dialog({ autoOpen: false }); // If user changes the selected // 1. Prompt for confirmation // 2. If users confirms, clear data $('#selected').change(function() { if (locations) { var confirmed = confirm("Oh Rly?"); if (confirmed) { // Clear data var locations; } } }); // When user clicks "Location" Button.. $('.loc-select button').click(function() { if (!locations) { $.getJSON("/Controller/JSONAction", { selectedId: selected, pageNum: 1, pageSize: 100 }, function(data) { locations = data; $.each(locations, function(index, loc) { var $tr = $('<tr/>') .append($('<td/>') .append('<input type="checkbox" name="TEST-'+index+'" value="'+loc.Id+'"/>')) .append('<td>' + loc.Name + '</td>'); $("#location-dialog table tbody").append($tr); }); }); } $locDialog.dialog('open'); return false; }); }); Here's the thing, Inside the .click(...) callback, I can see locations is []. Now, when I am in the .change(...) callback, I see locations is undefined. Any help/insight, as always, is appreciated!

  • Accessing jQuery objects in the module pattern

    - by Stewart
Hello, Really getting in to javascript and looking around at some patterns. One I have come accross is the module pattern. Its seems like a nice way to think of chucks of functionality so I went ahead and tried to implement it with jQuery. I ran in to a snag though. Consider the following code <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"> <title>index</title> <script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8" src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.4/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"> $(document).ready(function(){ var TestClass2 = (function(){ var someDiv; return { thisTest: function () { someDiv = document.createElement("div"); $(someDiv).append("#index"); $(someDiv).html("hello"); $(someDiv).addClass("test_class"); } } })(); TestClass2.thisTest(); }); </script> </head> <body id="index" onload=""> <div id="name"> this is content </div> </body> </html> The above code alerts the html content of the div and then adds a class. These both use jQuery methods. The problem is that the .html() method works fine however i can not add the class. No errors result and the class does not get added. What is happening here? Why is the class not getting added to the div?

  • Java accessing variables using extends

    - by delo
    So here I have two classes: Customer Order Class and Confirmation Class. I want to access the data stored in LastNameTextField (Customer Order Class) and set it as the text for UserLastNameLabel (Confirmation Class) after clicking a "Submit" button. For some reason however, the output displays nothing. Snippet of my code: package customer_order; public class customer_order extends Frame{ private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private JPanel jPanel = null; private JLabel LastNameLabel = null; protected JTextField LastNameTextField = null; private JButton SubmitButton = null; public String s; public customer_order() { super(); initialize(); } private void initialize() { this.setSize(729, 400); this.setTitle("Customer Order"); this.add(getJPanel(), BorderLayout.CENTER); } /** * This method initializes LastNameTextField * * @return javax.swing.JTextField */ public JTextField getLastNameTextField() { if (LastNameTextField == null) { LastNameTextField = new JTextField(); LastNameTextField.setBounds(new Rectangle(120, 100, 164, 28)); LastNameTextField.setName("LastNameTextField"); } return LastNameTextField; } /** * This method initializes SubmitButton * * @return javax.swing.JButton */ private JButton getSubmitButton() { if (SubmitButton == null) { SubmitButton = new JButton(); SubmitButton.setBounds(new Rectangle(501, 225, 96, 29)); SubmitButton.setName("SubmitButton"); SubmitButton.setText("Submit"); SubmitButton.addActionListener(new java.awt.event.ActionListener() { public void actionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent e) { System.out.println("actionPerformed()"); // TODO Auto-generated Event stub actionPerformed() //THE STRING I WANT s = LastNameTextField.getText(); java.awt.EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { new confirmation().setVisible(true); } }); } }); } return SubmitButton; } package customer_order; public class confirmation extends customer_order{ private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private JPanel jPanel = null; // @jve:decl-index=0:visual-constraint="58,9" private JLabel LastNameLabel = null; private JLabel UserLastNameLabel = null; // @jve:decl-index=0: /** * This method initializes frame * * @return java.awt.Frame */ public confirmation() { super(); initialize(); } private void initialize() { this.setSize(729, 400); this.setTitle("Confirmation"); this.add(getJPanel(), BorderLayout.CENTER); } /** * This method initializes jPanel * * @return javax.swing.JPanel */ private JPanel getJPanel() { if (jPanel == null) { UserLastNameLabel = new JLabel(); UserLastNameLabel.setBounds(new Rectangle(121, 60, 167, 26)); //THE PROBLEM?   • Using a singleton database class in functions and multiple scripts(PHP) - best use methods

    - by dscher
I have a singleton db connection which I get with: $dbConnect = myDatabase::getInstance(); which is easy enough. My question is what is the least rhetorical and legitimate way of using this connection in functions and classes? It seems silly to have to declare the variable global, pass it into every single function, and/or recreate this variable within every function. Is there another answer for this? Obviously I'm a noob and I can work my way around this problem 10 different ways, none of which is really attractive to me. It would be a lot easier if I could have that $dbConnect variable accessible in any function without needing to declare it global or pass it in. I do know I can add the variable to the $_SERVER array...is there something wrong with doing this? It seems somewhat inappropriate to me. Another quick question: Is it bad practice to do this: $result = myDatabase::getInstance()-query($query); from directly within a function?

  • [Ruby] Modifying object inside a loop doesn't change object outside of the loop?

    - by Jergason
I am having problems with modifying objects inside blocks and not getting the expected values outside the blocks. This chunk of code is supposed to transform a bunch of points in 3d space, calculate a score (the rmsd or root mean squared deviation), and store both the score and the set of points that produced that score if it is lower than the current lowest score. At the end, I want to print out the best bunch of points. first = get_transformed_points(ARGV[0]) second = get_transformed_points(ARGV[1]) best_rmsd = first.rmsd(second) best_points = second #transform the points around x, y, and z and get the rmsd. If the new points # have a smaller rmsd, store them. ROTATION = 30 #rotate by ROTATION degrees num_rotations = 360/ROTATION radians = ROTATION * (Math::PI/180) num_rotations.times do |i| second = second * x_rotate num_rotations.times do |j| second = second * y_rotate num_rotations.times do |k| second = second * z_rotate rmsd = first.rmsd(second) if rmsd < best_rmsd then best_points = second best_rmsd = rmsd end end end end File.open("#{ARGV[1]}.out", "w") {|f| f.write(best_points.to_s)} I can print out the points that are getting stored inside the block, and they are getting transformed and stored correctly. However, when I write out the points to a file at the end, they are the same as the initial set of points. Somehow the best_points = second chunk doesn't seem to be doing anything outside of the block. It seems like there are some scoping rules that I don't understand here. I had thought that since I declared and defined best_points above, outside of the blocks, that it would be updated inside the blocks. However, it seems that when the blocks end, it somehow reverts back to the original value. Any ideas how to fix this? Is this a problem with blocks specifically?

  • Variable not accessible within an if statment

    - by Chris
I have a variable which holds a score for a game. My variable is accessible and correct outside of an if statement but not inside as shown below score is declared at the top of the main.cpp and calculated in the display function which also contains the code below cout << score << endl; //works if(!justFinished){ cout << score << endl; // doesn't work prints a large negative number endTime = time(NULL); ifstream highscoreFile; highscoreFile.open("highscores.txt"); if(highscoreFile.good()){ highscoreFile.close(); }else{ std::ofstream outfile ("highscores.txt"); cout << score << endl; outfile << score << std::endl; outfile.close(); } justFinished = true; } cout << score << endl;//works
