• Custom Xsession with Gnome visuals

  I'm trying to create a kiosk PC only for web browsing using this tutorial as a reference (only difference - I'm using Firefox instead of Chromium) It is working correctly in principle (only FF window opens when I log in using the Kiosk session) but it looks, well, super ugly. The scrollbar and right-click context menus look like from the 1990s - gray and boxy. How could I modify the session to get Gnome-like scrollbars/menus without the whole Gnome desktop (top/bottom panel etc)? • Ubuntu 14.04 ATI/Intel Hybrid Graphics DPM

  I have a Dell Inspiron 3521 with hybrid ATI/Intel graphics. (AMD Radeon 7670M / Intel HD 4000) using Ubuntu 14.04 with open source drivers for graphics. (xserver-xorg-video-ati) I read that Ubuntu 14.04 with the linux kernel version 3.13 supports auto switching between graphics and dynamic power management. Is it correct? Anyway, if it is true, I dont think that it is working in my system , because fan runs constantly and battery backup is less than 2 hours. lspci | grep -i vga 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. • Downloading large files hangs system

  When Im trying to download large files, i.e. 1gb or more under FireFox, first of all it starts with very big download speed and in few seconds in almost get up to max (~11 MBps). It is downloading very fast, but when downloaded size becomes near 700-800mb and more, my system almost completely hangs, so I can do nothing - I just have to wait until it finishes downloading. Also when it hangs, I can't see the download progress - it looks like it completely hangs. Sometimes, however, if the file size is near 1gb, the system comes back from hang, finishing download, but sometimes I just cant wait before system comes back and have to kill FF from top (it takes me 2 minutes to do this, because of very slow system performance). I use Firefox as primary browser. If I use wget with direct link to file - everything is fine. Speed at max, no performance decrease. So what can I do?

• 2nd instance of Firefox does not obey GTK2 customizations

  Hi On Ubuntu 10.10 I started a 2nd instance of Firefox using the command: $ firefox -ProfileManager -no-remote & Created a new profile and everything works smoothly except for the fact that this instance of FF does not obey by GTK2 customizations that I have placed in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 Moreover, only SOME of the customizations are not obeyed. For example, the vertical scrollbars are supposed to be on the left, but they are on the right. The scrollbar arrows are together (Mac-like) as specified, so is the scrollbar width. The first instance obeys all customizations with scrollbars on the left. Any ideas?

• Why is Silverlight so unstable? [closed]

  I have never programmed in Silverlight, but I hate it. The reason is that I need it to watch videos on one of the site I watch, but like every other day I need to update the plugin. Why is Silverlight so unstable ??? they just can't get it right and I have to update that plugin all the time. P.S. I'm now thinking of somehow hacking that video stream and bypass the silverlight(so I could just throw it away). P.S. Its not updated like any other FF plugin, because its special and you need to download an exe ... pathethic.

  Are there any filters that would make background image to be displayed as black-and-white? What I mean, is this: i have a background image set via css using background: url(/image.png); But now I need to apply a filter so that an image is shown as black-white only. Ideally, I would like to also apply opacity to it. The effect I really trying to achieve is to have background image black/white and on hover over that span element the filter would be removed, revealing the color version. And of cause it has to work in FF, Chrome, IE Can someone help me?

• Uploading or attaching files that located on a shared drive doesn't work?

  I have this odd, quite minor, but annoying issue that I am quite perplexed about. Whenever I try to upload a file via my browser(let's say attach a file to an email in GMail), I click 'Browse' button and it opens standard file selection dialog, that doesn't show network drives. Further more if I try to drag a file from a network drive into GMail, it doesn't work either, it just doesn't let me do that. This issue has been around for quite sometime now, and I am just curious if this is something on my side or if it's a bug or a misconfiguration of some sort. FWIW, I am currently running 10.10, network drive is a samba share on NAS. This happens in FF and Chrome and this is only happens with Samba mounts. As a matter of fact, NFS volumes that are located on the same network operate perfectly fine.

• The actual difference between styesheet in the header and a seperate file

  Am wondering if someone can give me an opinion on this. I have always been taught to have all of the CSS in a separate file that is referenced from the head of the page. Reading this article http://www.lukew.com/ff/entry.asp?1792 the author is talking about making the Guardian website responsive. One of the things he notes they did to make the site faster and more resilient is to add the CSS inline into the header, thus reducing HTTP requests. Now this got me thinking about the right/best/fastest way of using the CSS If you have one main CSS file, its going to be called and read by the site on every page, no mater how big it is. So with that in mind, Im actually starting to think its better to just inline the whole style sheet and remove one HTTP roundtrip. I know for the purposes of neatness and being able to edit the file a seperate file is better. But which would you recommend and which do you think is faster? Thanks!

• SVN Checkout folder as local webroot

  I have XAMPP installed and running. I have an SVN working directory (WD) on my local that checks out from the repository. I set up a virtual host in xampp to point to my WD, but my browser (FF) gives me a 500 http status error: Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script. When I place a regular folder in the same location with the WD and switch names, it works fine.. Can I not use an SVN working directory as a web root folder?

  I've noticed that NetworkManager only has a single, left or right, click menu and no longer has an About menu option to show it's splash screen. In fact all the top bar mini short cut icons have been amputated and crippled leaving them with no rights. This severely impacts on our custom aps., similar to FireFox bookmarks, which can no longer be right clicked to bring up a context menu. It is possible to disengage FF's File|Edit|... menu bar from the top by running it in safe-mode so the menu bar is resident in a window, restoring right clicks, but our aps. do not have "safe modes". How can right clicks in menu bars be restored? reference

• glx not working, optirun works, gnome in fallback mode

  It all started when I installed nvidia's own driver. Uninstalling it and reverting back to nvidia-current didn't solve the problem, so I have been playing with this for a while. Now nvidia-current seems to be functional. It seems glx support is missing, and my intel graphics is not responding. gnome loads only in fallback mode.   We have support for various languages in our website, including Spanish, French and Swedish. For now, the links in the site are NOT encoded before sent to the browser, sending the real accented chars (if such exists, i.e. href="www.(dot)example(dot)com/héllo.html") and not their HEX representation. This works & looks good on all browsers, including Chrome, FF and IE. However, we care great deal about SEO. We got this tip that encoding the links before sending them to the browser (so instead of linking to http://www.example.com/héllo, we will link to http://www.example.com/h%E9llo) will improve the way search engines will 'understand' the links and the keywords in the URL. This involves some work at our side, so we wanted to know if there's truth in that tip, but couldn't find anything addressing this issue.

• Using IE 9 as my primary browser

  With the release of Internet Explorer 9 RC the browser looks to be in a usable state.  So far, my experience has been positive. However, one area where I am having problems is when people are using the jQueryUI library.  Versions older than 1.8 cause IE 9.0 to be unable to drag and drop.  This is a real pain, especially at sites like Agile Zen, where dragging and dropping is a primary bit of functionality. Now that IE 9 is a release candidate, we’ll see how quickly these things improve.  I expect things to be rough, but so far, I’m really liking IE 9.  There’s more real estate than Chrome (it’s the tabs inline with the address bar) and its faster than Chrome 9.0 and FF 3.6.8 (as tested on my own machine). • How to make Gmail open when clicking mailto: links in the same browser it is clicked in under Unity Ubuntu 12.04?

  I just installed 12.04 and when clicking mailto: links Thunderbird opens. I want Gmail to open in the browser that the mailto: link is clicked. So if I am in Firefox and click a mailto: link a new FF tab opens with Gmailloaded. And if I am in Chrome and click a mailto: link then a new Chrome tab opens up with Gmail loaded. Is there a way to do this via some script? Or would I need to set this in some system settings?

• Is there any way to prevent Googlebar from breaking Friendly 404s

  This might be considered a continuation of this question. If I output HTML after my 404 header, It displays properly in IE and FF unless the user has Google bar instaled. If I try header('HTTP/1.x 404 Not Found'); header("Location: http://www.example.com/?content=404_error"); die(); then I'm getting 302 from the redirect. It seems to overrule the 404 Supposedly if your output is larger than 512 bytes, the toolbar isn't supposed to override the page, but It seems to do it anyway. I found a setting in Google's Toolbar that said "Provide suggestions on navigation errors". Turning that off provides me with the behaviour I want my visitors to experience. Does anyone know if Google provides a way for a developer to over-ride that setting for all visitors?

• Specific website not working on my connection [closed]

  For some reason, the website http://www.woopra.com/ doesn't work well (shows as plain html, no css/images/JS) on my computer and my Android tablet (they both share the same internet connection). It does however, work on my WP 7.5 phone (3G). When I try to set a wifi hotspot and use the tablet it still doesn't work (tried to clean cache). I tried FF, Chrome and IE (multiple versions). What is going on here? I'm clueless! Thanks.

• How do I get the Java plugin in Firefox 3.6 working?

  I have Ubuntu 10.10. I needed the Sun Java so I added Sun Oracle as supplier of packages and installed java-6. However, I haven't been able to persuade Firefox to use this Java for the browser. In fact I managed to turn off the original Java plugin (I can't remember exactly how) and I can't see any way to re-enable it. Ie. it doesn't appear in the "plugins" page of the Add-ons option. (I'm in Firefox 3.6.13) Any suggestions for how to re-enable Java in FF 3.6, and make sure it's using the Sun version? thanks phil

  In my experience, a Software Development Team that comprises: 1 Project Manager 1 Tech Lead 1 - 2 Senior Dev 2 - 3 Junior Dev (Fresh grad) Only the Tech Lead & PM (and/or Senor Dev/s) will participate in a meeting with Clients, Domain Experts, Client's technical resource. I can think of the ff potential pitfalls: Important info gets lost Human error (TL/PM might forgot to disseminate info due to pressure or plain human error) Non-verbal info (maybe a presentation using a diagram presented by Domain Expert) Maintaining Ubiquitous language is harder to build since not all team members get to hear the non-dev persons Potential of creative minds are not fully realized (Personally, I am more motivated to think/explore when I am involved with these important meetings) Advantages of this approach: Only one point of contact Less time spent on meetings? Honestly, I am biased & against this approach. I would like to hear your opinions. Is this how you do it in your team? Thanks in advance!

• Why doesn't Unity 3D work on my HD3000 integrated graphics?

  So I got my new laptop recently. HP Envy 15 with switchable graphics card. I'm using both windows and ubuntu, but for ubuntu I need just Intel HD3000 for better battery live. I've installed fglrx-updates and fglrx-amdcccle-updates. The drivers seems to work for my ATI card. The problem is, Intel HD3000 does not support Unity 3D. Why? • Fan working non-stop on a Dell Inspiron 5110

  First of all i'm new at ubuntu. I've only tried 11.10 before 12.04. Since then my notebook's(Dell Insprion 5110) fan was working non-stop. And also battery lasts in 2 hours. So i made a research.
