• How to version large binary files?

  I run Windows XP inside a virtual machine for some tasks. I attempted to use git to version the image for virtual box; however, it is about 6GB after all the service packs. I only have 6GB of ram and git bombs out saying it is out of memory. I would basically like to have snapshots of Windows so that I can simply blow away an image and start anew when I want to. I like to have something I can rollback to in the event that an upgrade doesn't work so I would prefer to use version control or snapshots if the filesystem supports it. Any ideas on what tools I can use to do that?

  In my Asterisk log file, I have a line like this (truncated): Executing [123@mycontext:1] Set("SIP/myhost-b7111840", "__INCOMINGCLI=4711") Now I want to do the following filtering while looking at the log file with tail -f: Match lines with a specific value for "INCOMINGCLI", storing the call ID (the "SIP/myhost-b7111840" part) Output all subsequent lines that contain the call ID. As a bonus, having a grep-like option like -A would be nice. I could do that easily in various programming languages, but how would I do it with standard UNIX commands like sed or awk? Can it be done with these commands?

  Hi, I've looked everywhere for a solution to this. Is there any way to turn off this logging in VNC? VNC seems to be logging some large updates I'm doing in mysql and taking up my whole hard drive space. The only way to get rid of the log file is to reboot, which I would prefer not to have to do if possible. Cheers

• Cannot Copy Pictures w/ text or w/o from web pages anymore word in office starter 2010

  This is something new. I had been able to copy text and pictures from websites into a microsoft word office starter 2010. I have gone into advanced settings to no avail. I have verified that under paste special html is selected. I have reviewed the help sections and questions and they all tell me to select html under paste special but again it isn't working either. Also I used to have 3 formatting options under paste and am now only having two options. I did have a problem with my computer last night and I am wondering if something re-set itself..will you help?

In a perfect world, getting your computers with different Microsoft operating systems to network would be as easy as clicking a button. With the Windows 7 Homegroup feature, it’s almost that easy. However, getting all three of them to communicate with each other can be a bit of a challenge. Today we’ve put together a guide that will help you share files and printers in whatever scenario of the three versions you might encounter on your home network. Sharing Between Windows 7 and XP The most common scenario you’re probably going to run into is sharing between Windows 7 and XP.  Essentially you’ll want to make sure both machines are part of the same workgroup, set up the correct sharing settings, and making sure network discovery is enabled on Windows 7. The biggest problem you may run into is finding the correct printer drivers for both versions of Windows. Share Files and Printers Between Windows 7 & XP  Map a Network Drive Another method of sharing data between XP and Windows 7 is mapping a network drive. If you don’t need to share a printer and only want to share a drive, then you can just map an XP drive to Windows 7. Although it might sound complicated, the process is not bad. The trickiest part is making sure you add the appropriate local user. This will allow you to share the contents of an XP drive to your Windows 7 computer. Map a Network Drive from XP to Windows 7 Sharing between Vista and Windows 7 Another scenario you might run into is having to share files and printers between a Vista and Windows 7 machine. The process is a bit easier than sharing between XP and Windows 7, but takes a bit of work. The Homegroup feature isn’t compatible with Vista, so we need to go through a few different steps. Depending on what your printer is, sharing it should be easier as Vista and Windows 7 do a much better job of automatically locating the drivers. How to Share Files and Printers Between Windows 7 and Vista Sharing between Vista and XP When Windows Vista came out, hardware requirements were intensive, drivers weren’t ready, and sharing between them was complicated due to the new Vista structure. The sharing process is pretty straight-forward if you’re not using password protection…as you just need to drop what you want to share into the Vista Public folder. On the other hand, sharing with password protection becomes a bit more difficult. Basically you need to add a user and set up sharing on the XP machine. If you don’t want to make your Windows 7 machines part of the same Homegroup, you can still share files through the Public Folder, and setup a printer to be shared as well.   Use the Homegroup Feature in Windows 7 to Share Printers and Files Create a Homegroup & Join a New Computer To It Change which Files are Shared in a Homegroup Windows Home Server If you want an ultimate setup that creates a centralized location to share files between all systems on your home network, regardless of the operating system, then set up a Windows Home Server. It allows you to centralize your important documents and digital media files on one box and provides easy access to data and the ability to stream media to other machines on your network. Not only that, but it provides easy backup of all your machines to the server, in case disaster strikes. How to Install and Setup Windows Home Server How to Manage Shared Folders on Windows Home Server Conclusion The biggest annoyance is dealing with printers that have a different set of drivers for each OS. There is no real easy way to solve this problem. Our best advice is to try to connect it to one machine, and if the drivers won’t work, hook it up to the other computer and see if that works. Each printer manufacturer is different, and Windows doesn’t always automatically install the correct drivers for the device. • Binary files printing and desired precision

  Hi, I'm printing a variable say z1 which is a 1-D array containing floating point numbers to a text file so that I can import into Matlab or GNUPlot for plotting. I've heard that binary files (.dat) are smaller than .txt files. I've read that fprintf has to be replaced with fwrite. My output file say dodo.dat should contain the values of array z1 with one floating number per line. I have %.16Le up in my code but I think that %.15Le is right as I have 15 precision digits with long double. I have put a dot (.) in the width position as I believe that this allows expansion to an arbitrary field to hold the desired number. Am I right? As an example with %.16Le, I can have an output like 1.0047914240730432e-002 which gives me 16 precision digits and the width of the field has the right width to display the number correctly. Is placing a dot (.) in the width position instead of a width value a good practice? Thanks a lot...

• How can I quickly parse large (>10GB) files?

  Hi - I have to process text files 10-20GB in size of the format: field1 field2 field3 field4 field5 I would like to parse the data from each line of field2 into one of several files; the file this gets pushed into is determined line-by-line by the value in field4. There are 25 different possible values in field2 and hence 25 different files the data can get parsed into. I have tried using Perl (slow) and awk (faster but still slow) - does anyone have any suggestions or pointers toward alternative approaches? FYI here is the awk code I was trying to use; note I had to revert to going through the large file 25 times because I wasn't able to keep 25 files open at once in awk: chromosomes=(1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25) for chr in ${chromosomes[@]} do awk < my_in_file_here -v pat="$chr" '{if ($4 == pat) for (i = $2; i <= $2+52; i++) print i}' >> my_out_file_"$chr".query done

• Batch deletion of smaller files from group of files via unix command line

  I have a large number (more than 400) of directories full of photos. What I want to do is to keep the larger sizes of these photos. Each directory has 31 to 66 files in it. Each directory has thumbnails, and larger versions, plus a file called example.jpg I dispatched the example.jpg file easily with: rm */example.jpg I initially thought that it would be easy to delete the thumbnails, but the problem is they are not consistently named. The typical pattern was photo1.jpg and photo1s.jpg. I did rm */photo*s.jpg but it ended up some of the files named photoXs.jpg were actually larger and not smaller. Argh. So what I want to do is scan each directory for filesize and delete (or move) the thumbnails. I initially thought I'd just ls -R every file and extract the size of each file and save those under a threshold. The problem? In one directory the large will be 1.1 MB and the thumb is 200k. In another the large is 200k and the small 30k. Even worse, the files really are mostly named photo1.jpg - so simply putting them all in the same folder, sorting by size, and deleting in groups would not work without renaming already, and if it's possible I'd prefer to keep them in their folders. I was almost resolved to just doing this all manually, but then thought I'd ask here. How would you do this task?

I have applied a Group Policy to clean temporary internet files on exit i.e to delete all temporary internet files when users close the browser. But the group policy doesn't seem to work as user profile size keeps on increasing and the major space is occupied by temporary internet files therefore increasing the disk usage. I`d like to modify the script in such a way that my downloaded files go into a temporary folder, if the folder is not specified. The temporary-files folder in *nix machines is "/tmp" ; would there be any Python method I could use to find out the temporary-files folder in a particular machine?   Hi, I have to sync large files across some machines. The files can be up to 6GB in size. The sync will be done manually every few weeks. I cant take the filename into consideration because they can change anytime. My plan is to create checksums on the destination PC and on the source PC and than copy all files with a checksum, which are not already in the destination, to the destination. • Trying to cat files - unrecognized wildcard

  Hello, I am trying to create a file that contains all of the code of an app. I have created a file called catlist.txt so that the files are added in the order I need them. A snippet of my catlist.txt: app/controllers/application_controller.rb app/views/layouts/* app/models/account.rb app/controllers/accounts_controller.rb app/views/accounts/* When I run the command the files that are explicitly listed get added but the wildcard files do not. cat catlist.txt|xargs cat > fullcode I get cat: app/views/layouts/*: No such file or directory cat: app/views/accounts/*: No such file or directory Can someone help me with this. If there is an easier method I am open to all suggestions. Barb

For example recently I had asked a question Reading xml document in firefox in stack overflow. Soufiane Hassou gave me a link to w3schools, where I found a example on parsing xml document, I understood how the example works, but I copied the code and tweaked it according to my requirement, since I don't like typing much.   I cannot update any txt files using php. I just cannot see any updates on bob.txt. Is this a permission error in windows? It works fine on my laptop at home. I also cannot change the php files on my website, using filezilla.

• Copy all bridge traffic to a specific interface

  I have a bridge/switch set up an a machine that has multiple ports. Occasionally, I have a vm running through virtualbox, and I'll have it use a virtual adapter and then I add the adapter to the bridge. I have heard that some switches can copy all the traffic they see to a specific port on the bridge, usually for network monitoring. I would like to be able to run some windows based network tools. I do not want to run Windows on the actual hardware, because it would be lots of work to duplicate my setup in windows, so I was thinking if I can copy all traffic to a port, I can send it to a VM with windows. How can I set this up? I think this might be ebtables area, but I don't know ebtables well enough to know for sure, and it always seems like (from my understanding of ebtables) ebtables does something with the traffic (drop, accept, etc), but never copies it.

• Can't copy from hfs+ external

  I've spent days and days trying to figure this out, but still can't. I think I've read every article on this and tried all there is to try, and I still can't copy any file from my mac-formatted hfs+ external drive. Sorry if there's still an article I've missed.. I have disabled journaling and tried all the hfsprogs commands I could find, but still whenever I click on a folder on the external and try to copy it to my home directory, I get this: "The folder xxx cannot be handled because you don't have permission to read its content." I then found an article about inoring this by copying files through the Terminal. When trying to run the sudo cp -r command in the Terminal with my external drive path, I always get 'no such file or directory'.. Does anyone have another suggestion for me? Thanks in advance!

  I am a huge fan of emacs.. But even after 1 year of practising on emacs I am unable to solve these three annoying issues about emacs please help me! 1.Whenever I want to copy the content from emacs into other things such as a website textarea I have to use GUI copy button because ctrl+w doesn't work. Is there any way to do this from emacs-command line. 2.Whenever I delete something using ctrl+shft+SPC or ctrl+k etc I don't want it to be stored in kill ring how do I do it(I know ctrl+D does this but it deletes only one char at a time)? 3.Whenever I select text by mouse and press backspace then text goes into kill ring(Which I want to change as mentioned) but same doesn't happen when I select text with ctrl+SPC(set mark) and then ctrl+f/ctrl+b etc. Please help me! • How to resize a /home partition in Kubuntu?

  I was distro hopping for awhile in the past few months, so in order to keep all of my files secure, I made a partition of around 50 GB named Files to store all of my files in, and still have them for quick and easy access. However, now that I've found a distribution I'm comfortable with (Kubuntu 11.10), I would like to remove this partition, and have all of my files in my /home folder, in order to more easily deal with these files. I've moved all of my files in the partition to my /home folder (and still have plenty of room to spare), and now I'm trying to delete the partition and use the space for my /home folder. I can delete the partition just fine, however, I can't extend the /home folder into the unallocated space. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about. In order to change the size of the /home partition, I need to unmount it. But, I am unable to unmount it! How do I best extend the size of the partition?

  I have been trying for some time to serve & cache static files for my rails app using nginx. the rails app server runs mongrel_cluster and is deployed on a different host than that of nginx. following many of the available discussions I tried the following server { listen 80; server_name www.myappserver.com; ssl on; root /var/apps/myapp/current/public; location ~ ^/(images|javascripts|stylesheets)/ { root /var/apps/myapp/current; expires 10y; } location / { proxy_pass http://myapp_upstream; } } But nginx fails to find the images and to load the css and js files. Can anyone help me out here? My aim is to configure nginx in such a way that it caches the static files till expiry. Please suggest me some way to achieve this or am I missing any point here?
