• v4l - capture and watch at the same time

  Capturing v4l and line-in audio using mencoder works very well, but I would like to record real-time gameplay video from consoles plugged into the video card. I've used xawtv for this (Works quite well, can preview and record in real time), but when I enable any deinterlacing or aspect ration options the video fails to record. I have to record raw and re-encode the video with the appropriate filters later to get something workable. Other things I have tried: tvtime with xvidcap and jack audio capture - xvidcap drops frames and muxing the audio is impossible as it will go out of sync (I have not found muxer options that work to force a correct frame rate) mencoder capture to file, attempt to pipe tail of file to mplayer... mencoder works great, piping the file is far too heavy to attempt gameplay. Soooo, v4l capture and preview simultaneously, recommendations?

• How many pHPShield loaders do I need to install

  An application asks me to install an old pHPshield version but prior to that it asks that I delete all pHPshield loaders in the php extension_dir directory. Am planning to encode some of my own php files with the newer pHPSHIELD version (8+) so I need to also upload newer loaders, but am not sure if it's ok to have multiple pHPSHIELD loaders in the extension dir. Can someone please clarify this confusion? My server runs php 5.2.14 with phpSHIELD Loader Version 5.0.1 and an i386 structure on Centos. The pHPSHILED demo created me a bunch of folders containing the loaders(files that end with .lin extension. I assume the folder Linux_x86-32 is the correct one for my server structure and it contains files like ixed.5.0.1.lin . Can I upload these next to the existing one in the extension_dir directory? • Convert png sequence to x264 with ffmpeg

  I am trying to convert a series of pngs into an mp4 video. I am using ffmpeg, and want to encode the video with the x264 codec. Using the command ffmpeg -y -r 30 -b 1800k -i _tmp%04d.png -vcodec libx264 out.mp4 I get the following warning message Incompatible pixel format 'bgra' for codec 'libx264', auto-selecting format 'yuv420p' My understanding is that there is an alpha channel in the pngs, which the x264 encoder cannot handle. Is there a way to get around this problem? Is there, for example, a way to get the encoder to ignore the alpha channel (my pngs don't actually have any transparent elements)? I'm aware that I could batch convert the pngs beforehand to strip the alpha channel, but the sequence of images is produced by another program, and having to preprocess the images each time I make a video would be less than optimal. Edit: After stripping the alpha channel from each frame using the command convert in.png -background white -flatten +matte out.png ffmpeg gives the warning message Incompatible pixel format 'pal8' for codec 'libx264', auto-selecting format 'yuv420p' so still no dice.

I'm not really a perl user beyond enjoying it for massive directory-recursive find/replace operations within text files, so I haven't much of an idea what the permissions here are supposed to look like, and I'm not really sure how to go about determining how macports has gone and installed perl this way when it's otherwise worked without failure for years now. Does anyone have any recommendations for the sanest path towards rectifying this issue? Also, is there any interesting reason as to why the macports default for the perl5 port installs 5.12.4, and not 5.16.0, which has to be explicitly installed via the perl5.16 port? Thanks again!

  After encoding a DVD video to MP4 using Handbrake 0.9.4(2009112300) using the High Profile preset, my video will not open in QuickTime. • Why is my ogg bigger than my m4a?

  I am using the following commands to encode an audio file to m4a & ogg formats: ffmpeg.exe -i 0123456789 -ab 192k out.m4a ffmpeg.exe -i 0123456789 -f wav - | oggenc2.exe - -r -q 6 -o out.ogg (0123456789 has no extension.) My m4a output is 14,608kB while my ogg output is 19,809kB. Why? AFAIK -q 6 is roughly 192kbps. So it should be about even. I could see one file being 1-3MB bigger than the other, but 5MB is pretty large. The m4a is almost 75% of the ogg! Why is this?

• Best way to upscale a video?

  If I have a video file at 320x240 resolution which I want to re-encode (because I don't like the encoding it's in now) and I also want to play it at double size (640x480), will I get higher quality if I scale it up to 640x480 when I convert it to a new format, verses keeping it at 320x240 in the new format and playing it at double size? This probably depends on the program used to convert, and if so, please let me know any program which might increase the quality. Here's my thinking. If I play a 320x240 file at double size, the system has to scale up each frame in real time, whereas if I scale up while recompressing the system may be able to use a more intensive algorythm like Bicubic interpolation . However I am not sure if this is true or not.

• Streaming Flash Video - getting my feet wet

  I'm working on a project that will involve having a couple thousand short videos online. I haven't done anything with online video before and this is all a bit new to me, so I am looking for some general advice... I would like to use Flowplayer, and I would like to encode the videos as H264s. I am enamoured with Flowplayer's slow motion feature, which if I understand correctly, is only available using a Wowza server. I'm wondering: Is it advisable to use a delivery network of some sort? (Flowplayer seems to have a partnership with HDDN, and recommends them. http://www.hddn.com/) Or would I be better off purchasing Wowza and installing it on our own server? (At first glance, it looks as though signing up with a network like HDDN is much simpler, but perhaps there are problems that come along with this...?) Any tips / warnings of imminent peril would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I have php script on hosting, which receive big data with ajax/post. Just now, after some works on hosting, I see that script is broken. Looks like a problem with apache/php/php.ini or something like that. I check .htaccess php_value post_max_size 20M Which other parameters I should check? Is it possible that %BO encode kill php/apache? Or total number of parameters (about 2800) ?

• What does "Endcode #816" stand for in Canon iR-ADV C5035 printer logs?

  We are using the Canon iR-ADV C5035. Today a worker has reported that some Word documents cannot be printed via that device (others do). I could confirm that and found that the Canon iR-ADV C5035 logs showed an "Endcode" "#816" for every print job that was not printed (whereas other print jobs show an "Encode" "OK"). Unfortunately, neither the manual that came with the Canon copy machine nor the web seems to know what this "Endcode" means. Canon support has been informed, but I'm still waiting for them to call me back. Does anyone know how I could find out what this "Endcode" stands for? Or, preferably, where I can look up the meaning of such Canon "Endcodes" in the future? Thanks in advance for any hints.

• Disabling URL decoding in nginx proxy

  When I browse to this URL: http://localhost:8080/foo/%5B-%5D server (nc -l 8080) receives it as-is: GET /foo/%5B-%5D HTTP/1.1 However when I proxy this application via nginx: location /foo { proxy_pass http://localhost:8080/foo; } The same request routed through nginx port is forwarded with path decoded: GET /foo/[-] HTTP/1.1 Decoded square brackets in the GET path are causing the errors in the target server (HTTP Status 400 - Illegal character in path...) as they arrive un-escaped. Is there a way to disable URL decoding or encode it back so that the target server gets the exact same path when routed through nginx? Some clever URL rewrite rule?

• Encoding video stream for playback on a vanilla Windows XP with mencoder

  I have a bunch of PNG files, generated from a script. They represent consecutive frames of a video sequence and I'd like to encode them into a single AVI file (or some other video format) using mencoder. What parameters should I use to ensure that the video can be viewed on a vanilla Windows XP using Windows Media Player with no extra codecs installed apart from the default ones? So far I've tried -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=wmv2 and -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4 with no success. (Background story: some of the people I'm collaborating with on a scientific project cannot install any codecs on their university computers without the help of the local sysadmins, who are of course not very willing to install anything. I'd like to ensure that they can also view the video files I am creating).

• How to convert a mpeg4-aac video to mpeg-ts using MEncoder?

  Hello, I know this can be done using FFMpeg and I have done it. The only problem here was that FFMpeg actually tries to "encode" the file while converting to mpeg-ts which I don't want. i.e. I just want to change the container format to mpeg-ts without encoding the media. Is this type of conversion possible with FFMpeg? (I know about "copy" option, but it works with H264-aac and not with mpeg4-aac). Is it possible to change mpeg4-aac to mpeg-ts container format with MEncoder? I wish to know the personal opinion/advice of those who have already worked on such stuff. Thanks in advance.

One of our team is struggling to send an email to said employee. The client says the email is valid, but the postmaster reply tells me otherwise. could not be delivered. • How can one tell that FLAC or WAVPACK audio file is NOT originally encoded from a Lossy source?

  Hi everyone, Forgive me for my ignorance,firstly. Problem: Say I have a lossy mp3 audio file(5.17Mb ie. 87% compressed from its original souce-unknown), I then encode it to another LOSSLESS format, say FLAC or WAVPACK. The size increases(23.14Mb ie. 39% compressed from its original souce-mp3)! ID tags, etc remain the same and there's no way of checking the integrity of its origin. Question: Is there a way of checking that the so-called FLAC or WAVPACK audio file was originally encoded from a LOSSLESS source(wav,cda,ape,...etc) instead of a LOSSY source(mp3,aac,ATRAC,..etc) Thank you.   I would like to archive some home videos (DV). I don't need to save them losslessly, but I would like to encode them in something high-quality. What format is both pretty indistinguishable from the original and will likely be readable 15 years from now? WMA makes me nervous, because it's only one company that makes it, and they're constantly coming out with newer formats. (VLC couldn't open my WMAs that Windows Movie Maker made.) Other things I've considered are h.264, Ogg Theora, DivX, and Xvid. I don't mind paying for something, but usually that means the format is owned by only one vendor.

• How to extract jpegs from a video file using ffmpeg

  I am using C# and ffmpeg. In this scenario I have 279 individual jpegs and i have used ffmpeg to create a AVI file from these images on my client. CMD Line: -f image2 -r 10 -i "C:\000EC902F17F\img%05d.jpg" -s 352x288 -y "C:\1\test.avi" I then upload to my server. CMD Line: -i c:\1\1.avi c:\1\img-%05d.jpg I then extract jpegs from the AVI file. I get 265 jpegs back. Obviously ffmpeg is dropping these frames (most probable) when the avi is 1st created. Is there a way to 'force' to encode using ALL the images I have? Thanks. PS I did not specify any command line option other than the size of the video output. As far as I am aware if none are specified then ffmpeg automatically chooses the best ones?

• Why is my Output distorted after encoding with Expression Encoder?

  I'm a "n00b" when it comes to re-encoding files. I'm trying to re-encode an AVI into a silverlight container via Encoding Video using Expression Encoder 4.0. As you can see in the video, the left is the input and it looks/sounds fine. The right is the output and it... doesn't. I'm unsure of where to go from here. I'm not sure why the output is jacked up, since the input looks fine. Input Video properties: AVI 2.49GB 22:34 809x605 Video: TSCC 809x605 15fps [Stream 00] Audio: PCM 22050Hz mono 352kbps [Stream 01] Choice of output doesn't seem to matter, they all end up distorted like the picture shows.

• International Dvorak keyboard doesn't trigger hot-keys

  I'm using the Engilsh-Dvorak keyboard-layout; My second keyboard language is Hebrew, which has nothing to do with Dvorak but the hot keys (e.g if I'm writing a document in Hebrew and want to make some bold text using Ctrl+b). The default Hebrew keyboard that comes with Windows (7 and below) has a shift mode which matches each Hebrew character with its matching English QWERTY character ). Obviously I'd want to use the Dvorak corresponding key rather than the QWERTY one, so I created a Hebrew-Dvorak keyboard with a software called Keyboard Layout Manager (KLM) which creates new keyboard layouts DLLs. It works just fine for the shift key, however, Ctrl-key triggered hot-keys (e.g Ctrl+l in FF) are being matched to the corresponding QWERTY key. I've examined the properly working English-Dvorak layout using KLM and in it's "Ctrl+ pressed" view, there isn't any character that's matched to any key but still I tried to encode the Hebrew Ctrl+ pressed keys to work with their matching Dvorak keys, yet it had no effect.

• Grep all files in a directory and print matches with file name

  I have a list of log files that I create as part of a video encoding script that I wrote. I would like to search all of them and print out certain statistics from the encode - how fast they were encoded, what settings were used, etc. I can search for the average framerate in one file via this 1 liner: cat ${filename} | grep average which outputs: work: average encoding speed for job is 23.211176 fps and search for the ratefactor: cat ${filename} | grep RF I would like to search all files in the directory and print off one, or prefereably both pieces of information along with the filename. Is there any way I can use find or grep to get this in a one-liner, or do I need to write a script? I would like output like this: /home/javanix/filename.log <RF line> <average line> I would like this to either work using FreeBSD 9 or Ubuntu 12.04.

  Description I have a big (7.4G) .mkv file (1080p) which I want to convert to H.264 (using x264) Problem MediaCoder and GSpot are unable to detect the codec. They don't display anything. Just that the file is a matroska Container Video with a MIMEtype of video/x-matroska. No bitrate, profile etc. But the source tells me that is VC-1 encoded. Question So how do I encode this file. as in, using what encoding software, since MediaCoder has failed.

  I would like to crop and rotate a video, and then encode it to mp4 or mkv. mencoder video.mp4 -vf rotate=1,crop=720:1280:0:0 -oac pcm -ovc x264 -x264encopts preset=veryslow:tune=film:crf=15:frameref=15:fast_pskip=0:threads=auto -lavfopts format=matroska -o test.mkv But when I do the above encoding, the frame rate is way too fast. The encoding options were something I found, so I don't know if that is the problem. Question All I want is to crop and rotate the video, and keep the audio/video quality as good as possible. • Job queueing in Toast Titanium 10?

  I have a bunch of .MP4 video files I'm burning to DVD-Video using Toast Titanium 10 on my MacBook Pro. Right now, I'm doing them one at a time. Because my computer is several years old, encoding video for a single DVD takes approximately six hours. I've discovered that it appears I can encode the video directly to a .toast format — however, I have yet to figure out if I can burn these directly to DVD. Also, I have quite a bit of video left to burn, and even that method would require me intervening manually to start a new encoding or burn job every six hours. Would it be possible to somehow queue up multiple DVD-Video encoding jobs at once, and have the computer work through them automatically? The actual writing to DVD disc doesn't take nearly as long, and if I had all my video encoded for me to begin with my job would be a lot quicker. Maybe this can be accomplished with a different piece of software?

  A couple of years back MP3 was the most supported format for portable devices. Then Apple came along and wiped the floor of all the portable devices with the iPod as well as the iPhone. They clearly favour M4A (AAC). When to choose, right now, the 'best' audio codec to encode music to, which would you choose to achieve maximal independence of portable device vendors: MP3 or M4A?
