i am using pcap library to sniff some packets, change their tcp data , and then inject my packet on the network.
my question is: if i changed in the tcp data, should i recalculate the length field in the tcp header? should i also change the checksum? i read in a page on how to create raw sockets that if you set the tcp_checksum to 0, the kernel will automatically calculate it and fill it, is this true for windows machines also?
For testing purposes, I've found it's really useful to point whatever.machineIP.mydomain.com to 192.168.1.machineIP : that way we can test each other's code without fidgetting with hosts files.
I'm aware that this identifies our local IP addresses to the outside world, but if someone could access the network, it'd be trivial to sniff which of the local IP addresses respond to port 80 anyway.
Is there anything I'm not seeing?

I have a homework in which I should explain how I would break into a server, retrieve a file and cover my tracks. My main question: is there a way to packet sniff a remote web server?
Other information would be appreciated on covering tracks.
For debugging purposes, I need a way to see all HTTP traffic between our Tomcat installation and the test clients.
How can I configure Tomcat to trace all HTTP traffic (and not just the headers)?
We tried to sniff the traffic using Wireshark, but since the server and the clients are on the same Windows machine it proved problematic, due to the traffic being in localhost.
Is there any tool to sniff bittorrent traffic and reassemble data about the torrent? Im looking for file names, peers, tracker address, local IP, etc. This is purely for academic interest in which all parties would be willing participants and therefore please dont upvote responses that talk merely about legal issues with using this kind of approach on a production network. I also am assuming that the torrent connections are unencrypted.
Thanks
