• Media keys play/pause globally worked in 12.10, not in 13.10

  Laptop media keys On Asus n55sf laptop, there are a dedicated keys for volume up, volume down, mute, [play/pause], stop, launch (plus a dozen Fn-key combinations). In 12.10 most worked. (Overall is seems unrelated to desktop environment used, stating it for the sake of completeness.) On Ubuntu 12.10 under XFCE they just worked. That is: when a player like rhythmbox or totem was started, it would alternate between play and pause. Interestingly, if several were started, they would alternate independently. E.g. use mouse to pause rhythmbox, launch totem, and one hit on [play/pause] key would pause one and resume the other. Keys Next,Previous and Stop worked as expected in any program. In 13.10 most still work, but play/skip related ignored. On Xubuntu 13.10 (XFCE too) the volume keys work but the [play/pause], stop, next and prev are ignored. Not tried regular Ubuntu 13.10 (Unity). Search before you ask Here are a few facts: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Architecture is ummutable and mentions Ubuntu 9.10. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting is also outdated as it mentions /usr/share/doc/udev/README.keymap.txt which no longer exists. On 12.10 and 13.10 versions, at XFCE level (as visible by xfconf-query or using xfce4-settings-manager) there are a couple of shortcut for keys like XF86Calculator or XF86TouchpadToggle but nothing related to volume prev/next/play/stop, which is okay. XF86Audio substring doesn't appear in /etc (which is normal) Kernel-level test: "showkey -s" on console shows that keys Next,Play/Pause,Previous,Stop are keycodes 163,164,165,166. Nothing relevant in /etc about that. Reports https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/1072371 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1012365 suggest to adjust at udev level. Alas, the udev tutorials I found ( e.g. https://wiki.debian.org/udev ) don't even mention keyboard. A thread in french seems to deal with a similar issue: https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1395051. @sudo evtest /dev/input/event3@, in X as well as on plain console, reports events on key pressed and repeats, but nothing when pressing those media keys. • xsltproc killed, out of memory

  I'm trying to split up a 13GB xml file into small ~50MB xml files with this XSLT style sheet. But this process kills xsltproc after I see it taking up over 1.7GB of memory (that's the total on the system). Is there any way to deal with huge XML files with xsltproc? Can I change my style sheet? Or should I use a different processor? • Javascript Implementation Patterns for Server-side MVC Websites

  I'm looking for information on common patterns for initializing and executing Javascript page by page in a "traditional" server-side MVC website architecture. A few months ago, my development team began, but abandoned, a major re-architecture of our company's primary web app, including a full front-end redesign. In the process, there was some debate about the architecture of the Javascript in the current version of the site, and whether it fit into a clear, modern design pattern. Now I've returned to the process of overhauling the front end of this and several other MVC websites (Ruby on Rails and MVC.net) to implement a responsive framework (Bootstrap), and in the process will again need to review then revamp and update a lot of Javascript. These web applications are NOT single-page Javascript applications (in fact, we are ripping out a lot of Ajax) or designed to require a Javascript MVC pattern; these apps are basically brochure, catalog and administrative sites that follow a server-side MVC pattern. The vast majority of the Javascript required is behavioral, pre-built plugins (JQuery and Bootstrap, et al) that execute on specific DOM nodes. I'm going to give a very brief (as brief as I can be) run-down of the current architecture only in order to illustrate the scope and type of paradigm I'm talking about. Hopefully, it will help you understand the nature of the patterns I'm looking for, but I'm not looking for commentary on the specifics of this code. What I've done in the past is relatively straight-forward and easy to maintain, but, as mentioned above, some of the other developers don't like the current architecture. Currently, on document ready, I execute whatever global Javascript needs to occur on every page, and then call a page-specific init function to initialize node-specific functionality, retrieving the init method from a JS object. For common implementation of plugins, I often extend JQuery, so I can easily initialize a plugin with the same options throughout the site.   I have the same problem, a 32 bits toshiba nb255, it first had the windows 7 bu next I installed the ubuntu 11.04. The wifi does not turn on. I used the following issues the commands rfkill unblock wlan0, sudo ifconfig wlan0 down; they were not able. by setting up the bios in advanced menu, the wireless communication sw in ON, but it did not work also. neither the utilities toshiba nor utilities of ubuntu (wicd, wifi radar). by using gedit to file group, nothing. by installing madwifi packet, nothing. by exporting the wifi driver from windows to ubuntu, by means of the NDISwrapper packet, neither. I only see the device is up by protocols and down phisically, My question is, is it possible to enable or not shutdown physically the device?, because in the toshiba model nb255 the wifi is not set up/down bye means of a physical switch, but by means a combination of Fn + F8 (only for windows 7, no one more), Is there one possibility to configure the hot keys in ubuntu?

• Synergy Key Mapping

  I'm running a Synergy server on Ubuntu and a Synergy+ client on OSX. The server has a standard windows keyboard with shift, ctrl, windows, and alt keys. My MacBookPro has shift, fn, control, alt/option, and command keys. When I press ctrl-c, ctrl-v, etc, the appropriate copy/paste action doesn't happen on the Mac, but it does in Ubuntu. If I'm controlling the mac, and press alt-c, alt-v, then I get the copy/paste action. So I played around with key mapping in synergy.conf and found that the following allows me to do copy/paste with ctrl-c/ctrl-v: section: screens godzilla: mbp.local: ctrl = alt alt = ctrl end Is this all that I need to do? Or are there other mappings that will help as well? The synergy configuration page refers to the following key mappings. What are the equivalent keys for each of these on the Windows keyboard and Mac keyboard? • Dell 15Z. Trying to output image using Mini Displayport to a Yamasaki Q270. (2560 x 1440) rez monitor. Dual DVI-D to Mini Displayport

  I have a Dell 15Z. GT525M Video card. Updated Driver via NVIDIA. Problem is I just purchased a Yamasaki Catleap Q270 monitor. It is a (2560x1440) monitor with only a Dual DVI-D out. 15Z only has HDMI and a Mini Display Port. I got a Active Dual DVI-D to Mini Display Port Active Adapter(Linked Below). http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=6904&seq=1&format=2 The Setup works when i plug it into my Macbook air 13.3. However when I plug it into my 15Z it doesn't work. Tried everything I can thank of. Window control P. FN and F1. It just doesn't work. I believe the issue lies in the Mini Display Port but i can't be sure. No matter what i do, the Mini Display Port doesn't get recognized. Spent 3 hours on the phone with the XPS Tech team. They simply said it was not compatible.... Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

• Low CPU performance with low usage and clock - Windows 8.1

  I recently deleted everything from my PC and reinstalled Windows 8.1 from scratch. When I first booted into Windows everything was extremely slow though the CPU usage was very low (about 1%). After installing some drivers the problem seemed to be solved, I was able to use my PC normally. Today I installed a game and I noticed a strange behavior: the game was playable but the performance worsened more and more in the time. This is the situation BEFORE opening the game (normal): This is AFTER some minutes inside the game (low CPU usage and clock): Some information about my system: PC: Sony Vaio S13 (SVS13A1C5E) OS: Windows 8.1 CPU: Intel Core i7-3520M 2.90GHz GPU(1): Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU(2): NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE I tried searching for new drivers and other solutions but noting worked and I don't know what is the cause. I did not checked the temperatures but the fans are not running fast and the PC does not look overheated. Update: Max CPU Temp: 66°C, Max GPU Temp: 61°C The strange thing is that the GPU load is 99% (GPU-Z) and the fan is almost silent. Update 2: I had troubles with Sony Vaio software, I can't get the FN keys and the STAMINA/SPEED switch to work (it is a physical switch to enable/disable the Nvidia card and change the Power Profile). I'm saying this because I remember that before reinstalling Windows there was an option in the Vaio Control Center (now it is not there anymore) that allowed me to choose from something like "priority to performance (ventilation)" or "priority to silence". The current behavior looks like a "priority to silence", but I can't get the stamina-speed switch to work and so I don't see similar oprions in the Vaio Control Center. I don't know if the problem is related to this.

• ASUS N56VZ-S4209P Screen saver, Screen dimming,sleep/hibernation mode not working according to power management settings

  I have a problem with my ASUS N56VZ-S4209P(Win8, I7-3630QM) laptop. If I use the fn+f7 command to turn off the screen it turns on by itself after a few seconds (the time varies between 1-10 seconds). In addition to this my screensaver doesn't activate at all and the laptop doesn't dim its screen after X minutes or goes into sleep/hibernation mode as specified in the power options when plugged in or on battery. As far as my knowledge goes it's not caused by the mouse or track pad at all since I can unplug my mouse and disable the track pad but the problem persist. I presume this is caused by the same problem? Does anyone know of a fix for this problem? It would be greatly appreciated. . . . I seem to have found a solution to the problem related to the screen that turns itself on again. The Power4Gear application has a setting which enables you to turn a "Presentation mode" "On" and "Off", if that setting is "Off" then it doesn't turn the screen on without any human interaction. Thus that part of the problem is fixed.

• Problems starting autossh on boot [ubuntu]

  I'm trying to automatically start an SSH tunnel to my server on boot from a ubuntu box. I have an ubuntu box that's mounted on an 18-wheeler and is networked behind an air card. The box hosts a mysql database that i'm trying to have replicated when the aircard is connected. As I can never be sure of my IP and how many or which routers I'm behind I'm connected to my replication server with an SSH tunnel. I got that working using the following command: ssh -R 3307:localhost:3307 [email protected] Now I'd like that to start whenever the box is, and be alive all the time, so I installed auto-ssh and setup this little script: ID=xkenneth HOST=erdosmiller.com AUTOSSH_POLL=15 AUTOSSH_PORT=20000 AUTOSSH_GATETIME=30 AUTOSSH_DEBUG=yes AUTOSSH_PATH=/usr/bin/ssh export AUTOSSH_POLL AUTOSSH_DEBUG AUTOSSH_PATH AUTOSSH_GATETIME AUTOSSH_PORT autossh -2 -fN -M 20000 -R 3307:localhost:3306 ${ID}@${HOST} I've tried putting this scrip in /etc/init.d/ and using a post-up command in /etc/network/interfaces as well as putting it in /etc/network/if-up.d/. In both situations the script starts on boot, but the tunnel doesn't appear to be correctly established. The script works when run manually.

• Windows XP dual screen problems, user account related

  I have had this issue with a few laptops now and it looks like it is some sort of user account problem. Specifics of the system are: Dell Laptop Windows XP Pro SP3 Non-domain member computer DLP Projector connected to laptop via VGA I use this setup almost daily to do presentations, always the mirrored display mode where I can see on the laptop monitor the same thing that is displayed on the projector. Today, when I boot up, I get the mirrored display at the login screen, but after I log in, it switches to Extended Desktop (like two desktops side-by-side). Fn+F8 just cycles through all the normal settings except the mirrored display. I created a new user account on the computer and it performs normally. Mirrored display works as normal. I have run into this about 4 times now and it always can be solved by creating a new user account on the computer, and then all is well. I would like to either: 1. Find a way to reset the customized settings for a specific user account which would hopefully make this go away, or 2. Find the specific setting that causes this so that I can easily fix it when the problem comes up. Creating new user accounts is kind of a pain and a easy fix must be out there somewhere.

• After update to Windows 8.1 brigthness isn't working (changing)

  I just update my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 by Windows Store and I have some problems. My notebook is Acer Aspire Timelinex 3820TG and I know it's little old for Windows 8 but I install them and works fine (I updated my HDD to SSD). Now I just updated Windows and I have problem with changing brightness on my dedicated graphic card (Ati HD 5650). First I can changing brigthness with fn + keys but It just changing level in OS. No change in real. I tried reinstall drivers, install drivers for my card from Acer with compatibility to Windows 7 and without change. When I switch to integrated card changing brightness works. I think the problem is with drivers but I don't know how to get it working. Thanks for help Bonus question: I have another problem (but this one is not so important). Does anyone knows what msietxghh.exe is doing? Everytime when my system runs (after update) I get message that this program stops working but I just cancel and looks everything works fine.

I tried: Changing the resolution (Control Panel = Appearance and Personalization = Display = Screen Resolution) to 1024x768 Updating the video driver (to 8.14.10.2230) Uninstalling the driver and rebooting Pressing the Windows Key + "-" (magnifier) Pressing Ctrl + Mouse Scroll only resizes the desktop items Pressing Fn + F4 shows 1024x600 (which I think is what I should be using, but nothing happens) EDIT: Changed from Landscape to Portrait and it works Attached an External Monitor and when I extend or set as desktop it works only on the External Monitor (shows up as "Generic PnP Monitor in Device Manager) Basically the bottom inch of my desktop is off-screen hiding my start bar, but my wigets are in their proper position (the start bar is not hidden). Pressing Ctrl + Esc shows the start menu but its cut-off. I'm pretty sure I should be using 1024x600 resolution, any advice? What's odd is that this only started happening recently. • Control copy/paste doesn't work

  I have a laptop HP PAVILION dv6-3126er with Windows 7 Home Edition installed and neither control copy nor control paste doesn't work (i've tried: ctrl+c, ctrl+v, shift+c, shift+v, ctrl + insert, shift + insert). I've tried to run a system check through cmd with sfc /scannow, it repaired something, i restarted but it didn't solve the problem. I've also tried many key combinations (like alt+ctrl+fn), but nothing works in any program. In Microsoft Word 2003 in the menu i have no key combination for copy/paste near them (in my previous comp they've been there - in brackets). Shift+Delete works by the way. I brought this laptop a few weeks ago, and i discovered this problem in the first days. I have no viruses because i have had no time to even connect him to internet. Anyways, i checked it for viruses - it is clean. I don't want to do system restore, because i see no reason to do it for a pretty clean system. I hope it is not a problem with the laptop itself. Maybe there is another reason? Maybe i need to do some more system checks? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• Synergy Key Mapping

  I'm running a Synergy server on Ubuntu and a Synergy+ client on OSX. The server has a standard windows keyboard with shift, ctrl, windows, and alt keys. My MacBookPro has shift, fn, control, alt/option, and command keys. When I press ctrl-c, ctrl-v, etc, the appropriate copy/paste action doesn't happen on the Mac, but it does in Ubuntu. If I'm controlling the mac, and press alt-c, alt-v, then I get the copy/paste action. So I played around with key mapping in synergy.conf and found that the following allows me to do copy/paste with ctrl-c/ctrl-v: section: screens godzilla: mbp.local: ctrl = alt alt = ctrl end Is this all that I need to do? Or are there other mappings that will help as well? The synergy configuration page refers to the following key mappings. What are the equivalent keys for each of these on the Windows keyboard and Mac keyboard? • How can I pause console output in rxvt?

  I'm running rxvt in Cygwin on a Windows box. This is how I invoke it: rxvt -sr -sl 2500 -sb -geometry 90x30 -tn rxvt -fn "Lucida Console-14" -e /usr/bin/bash --login -i Anyone know how to pause the console output in rxvt? I can use Ctrl-S / Ctrl-Q to pause / un-pause, but this won't work if a script is already running and spewing output to stdout. Highlighting the terminal window with the mouse doesn't seem to work like with other consoles such as the standard Cygwin console, or the Windows command prompt console. Some sort of scroll lock would be nice, but I can't seem to find any way to do this. I know I could just pipe my output to a file, but I want a way to pause the output for something that I didn't expect to explode with console output. Basically I want to scroll back while its running without it constantly moving me to the bottom of the output buffer as it updates more data to stdout. I don't particularly care if the solution given actually pauses the script (like when you highlight the mouse in the Windows Command window), or just scroll locks and let's me scroll while its still running the underlying script, though I'd like to know how to do both if its possible.

• Xmonad on windows laptop

  I'm a Linux developer in the market for a laptop. 90% of my time is spent in Emacs, the terminal, and Google Chrome, and I want to use them within the excellent Xmonad tiling windows manager. Given these constraints, I can only see two options: Run Linux on a laptop Run Windows on the laptop, and spend all of my time working within a Linux VM. Years of experience suggest that the first option will take many frustrating hours and probably be suboptimal w.r.t. battery life, wifi, and fn keys like screen brightness or audio adjustment. For the second option, what would be the ideal setup? I've had a lot of luck with Cooperative Linux on my Samsung NC-10 netbook (Windows XP), but I would have to setup the X11 server myself. What about using VirtualBox (which includes the guest VM's GUI)? Has anyone tried this? Hardware-wise, I'm looking for something in the "Macbook Air killer" category; Samsung Series 9 laptop, Lenovo IdeaPad U300s, &c. (i.e., matte screen, 5h+ battery life, 3ish pound weight). Price is not a consideration; any suggestions?

• Prevent Windows from resizing all the apps on the desktop when switching monitors

  Short version: When moving my laptop and sleeping between using different monitors, all my open windows are crammed into the upper left corner as if they tried to fit on the laptop internal screen resolution. I plug in and switch to the external monitor before unlocking my session. Is there a way to prevent this automatic resizing? Longer version: I have a laptop that I move between two locations. I have one docking station, and the same kind of monitor configured for 1600x1200, in both locations. The internal laptop screen is awful so I don't use it. Location A: Docking station, monitor connected via DVI. Location B: No docking station, external monitor connected via VGA cable. In this location I have the laptop lid open for keyboard access but I don't use the laptop screen. When moving from Location A to Location B, the laptop wakes up from sleep, displaying the screen on the internal monitor. I switch to the external monitor display (using Fn+F8 on this laptop), and only after that do I unlock my session with my password. However, Windows has crammed all my nicely arranged windows into the upper left corner as if it were trying to fit them all on the laptop internal screen resolution. When moving from Location B to Location A, I have the laptop lid closed when using the docking station so Windows apparently concludes the screen resolution is 1600x1200 and doesn't resize any windows. The laptop is a Dell Latitude running Windows 7 Professional.

• Switching from Onboard intel to Nvidia Dedicated GPU

  How can I switch from Intel onboard grpahics to Nvidia Dedicated GPU? When I go to windows screen resolution I see intel. I cant change it. I go to Device Manager, I see both Adapters are there and Nvidia is known.I disabled intel, I didnt see any option to set one as primary so I disabled intel, black screen!Reboot and re-enable intel. I right click on the desktop, choose "Nvidia Control Panel" and on 3D options I chose the desired game I want to play, High performance Nvidia, but it didnt switch when I started the game. Then I made preferred GPU in the global settings High performance Nvidia for everything it still didnt change.I understand to save the battery etc. there is a switch option between these two but I dont see this switch when it is necessary, I cant also switch manually?Is there a manual switch FN key?I looked but couldnt find. Why I want to do this? 1) Better game peformance. 2) I want to play an old game from 2002(Diablo 2 LOD), when I start the game there are black bars on the sides, so screen becomes just smaller which I dislike!I heard this is intel's specification to center the display.But instead I would like to scale or expand it to fit widescreen(fullscreen).Which should be possible with Nvidia. My Notebook Specs: Fujitsu Lifebook AH531, Win7 , 64 bit, i5, intel HD graphics onboard, Nvidia GT 525. I didnt install Nvidia later, it was always installed and ready from the moment I turned on the computer first time. How I determined that the cards werent switched when I am playing the game: with the windows key I exited from the game, then looked at screen resolutions menu, still saw intel, also the game was still with black bars.I know intel GPU should enough for Diablo 2 but I am interested in this answer for further games, I dont always play Diablo, what if I install an up to date game for example?Then Intel will not be sufficient.I would like to learn the switch option.

• Dell laptop keyboard doesn't work

  I'm trying to fix my in-laws laptop, it's a Dell Studio 1745 that's running Windows 7 64 bit. The problem is that most of the keys on the keyboard do not work. The function keys work and the caps lock and numpad keys work, but no other keys do. If I hit the F2 key enough times when starting up, I can get to the BIOS, but after that even the function keys stop working. If I let it go all the way to the Windows login screen, I can see that the caps lock and num lock work - little images on screen actually appear, but they don't toggle the state of the key, i.e.,capslock is always off, numlock is always off. Using the fn+function combo works, so changing the brightness, etc. works fine. I'm stumped. I've tried disconnecting power and battery and leaving it for an hour or so before starting up but that hasn't helped either. Also - this might be a red herring - the touchpad is failing as well, the MS Device Manager says that it's failing with status 10, "unable to start device"

• Use external display from boot on Samsung laptop

  I have a Samsung RV511 laptop, and recently my screen broke. I connected an external screen and it works fine, but only after Windows starts. I want to be able to use the external screen right from boot, in order to set the BIOS to boot from DVD, and to then install a different OS and also format the hard drive. Right now I can only use the screen when Windows loads. What I've tried: I've tried opening up the laptop and disconnecting the display to make it only find the external and use the VGA as default -- didn't work. I've tried using the Fn+key combo in BIOS to connect external display - nothing I've been looking around for ways to change boot sequence without entering BIOS, but it doesn't look like it's possible. Possible solutions? A way to change boot sequence without entering BIOS? Someone with the same brand/similar model to help me blindly keystroke the correct arrows/F5/F6 buttons while in BIOS mode to change boot sequence? A way to force the external display to work from boot, through modifying the internal connections (I have no problem taking the laptop apart if needed, please no soldering though), through BIOS or program? Also, if I change boot sequence without accessing external screen, would the Ubuntu 12.1 installation sequence attempt to use the external screen or would I only be able to use it after Linux is installed and running? I'd really appreciate help, I can't afford to fix the screen for a few months from now, and I'd really like to make my computer come back to decent performance! Thanks in advance!
