• Impossible quandrary involving UCK, graphics card, and Nvidia drivers

  I have a computer that I want to install Ubuntu on. It is an older gaming computer with a Nvidia graphics card. When I attempt to boot any unmodified Linux distribution onto it, I get a "Boot error" message, which I assume is because the computer uses a discrete graphics card, which the Linux kernel does not have support for. Ordinarily, that would not be a problem, as I would just plug the monitor into the VGA port built in to the motherboard. However, this particular model of motherboard does not have an on-board graphics connector, so I am stuck with using the graphics card connection. That further would not be a problem; all I would have to do would be to use UCK to create a customized Ubuntu image that included the graphics drivers. Except for the fact that the Nvidia Linux drivers must be installed on a computer with a Nvidia graphics card present. So while using UCK, the driver installer fails with a message stating that there is no Nvidia graphics card present. How do I get Ubuntu on my desktop computer?

• Windows 7: from Geforce 8800 to three monitors?

  I've got a GeForce 8800 that I've quite happy with. It drives my two 23" widescreen displays well. Now I've got a 19" standard display that I want to stick between the two widescreens. My second PCIe 16x slot is unused (as is the PCI slot below that), and I want to add a card to my Win7 x64 system. This 19" display won't be used for gaming, so I don't need anything fancy. Here are two cards I was considering, but I'm wondering if they're bad choices for some reason? If they're both fine choices, which is better and why? Again, I'm needing to power only the 19" standard display with this card, and it won't play games. I just need 1280x1024 in Win7 x64.   I try to block sites in squid based on this article. Assuming you would want to block access to Yahoo (e.g http://www.yahoo.co.jp, http://www.yahoo.com, http://www.yahoo.co.in), you would ideally want to block all of the above URLs, if I use a regular expression and try to search something called yahoo it seems to get blocked. We are just interested in applying rules which would be most commonly used across all companies (e.g. social networking sites like facebook, orkut), porn sites (e.g. sex), gaming sites (games), movie & song download sites, and sites where they can upload data (e.g. rapidshare) What would be the common set of effective rules in achieving the above?

• Cannot access to any windows share including localhost

  I can't access any share from my operating system, including \\localhost and \\127.0.0.1. I have Windows 7. NetBIOS over IP is enabled, other computers in the network can access my shares and other computer's shares, but my operating system cannot access any share. I have installed Windows XP within VMware, and the virtual windows xp can access all shares including the host shares. I can communicate in other ways like TCP, HTTP and gaming, but not access shares. How to solve this problem?

• How to switch easily between a 5.1 headset and 2.1 speakers ?

  I have a 5.1 headset that I mostly use for gaming and watching movies. It is connected using 3 jacks to the rear panel of my motherboard (plus one for the microphone). I also have some small 2.1 speakers that I sometimes use to listen to music or to share a video/movie with someone. For now, what I do is crawl under my desk, and switch the cables. As my motherboard has 7.1 capabilities, I am wondering if there could be a way of having all 4 jack cables always plugged in, and switching on which device to output the sound programmatically. Has anybody had a similar problem, and how did you solve it ?

• Windows: Should I install Server or stick with regular?

  I hope somebody can help me solve my dilemma. I have my home PC (using Windows 7) which I use for both work and leisure (gaming, surfing, movies etc.) I tend to never turn it off, only when I must reboot because some installation requires me to or when the power gets lost. But, sometimes Windows starts acting weird (usually after the long period of system uptime), per example eats up randomly all the space on my system partition etc. which is solved after the reset by itself. I was thinking to switch to Windows Server, I guess that it is more optimized for long uptime, well, obviously it is meant for use on servers. Can somebody with more experience with this help me decide is it worth it, will it solve these issues connected with long uptime periods? Thanks in advance.

• Intel HD 4000 and Nvidia GT 650 working together on laptop

  My new win7 Acer notebook has i5 CPU with Intel HD 4000 and Nvida GT650 GPU. Obviously monitor is plugged to Intel HD. In Nvidia control panel I can configure PhysX but that doesn't help. Windows system rating shows high gaming experience and average/low windows aero experience. What does that mean? Does my laptop use nvidia for games/3d apps nad Intel HD 4000 for aero? Should I disable Intel HD in bios, but how to plug monitor to nvidia? Or should I leave everything like now because everything works as it suppose to work?   I have an ASUS N53S that I mainly bought for its RAM capacity. (I run a lot of VMs.) But as a bonus, it came with a fancy ATI video card. So I decided to install GTA 4 and plug it into a big monitor and settle down for some casual mayhem. But after about 5 minutes, it goes into hibernation! What gives? Since I was using an external monitor and didn't need the keyboard (using an XBox controller) I closed the lid on the laptop. Gaming is compute-intensive, so my GPU and CPU were both working hard and generating heat. Closing the lid interfered with cooling. Since I have the laptop configured to hibernate when I press the power button, the heat-triggered shutdown caused hibernation.

• Type 1 Hypervisor on the desktop

  I have a powerful home PC, and I've used VirtualBox to run Linux distros in Windows (and vice versa). I'm interested in trying out a lightweight type 1 hypervisor to run all my operating systems (Windows 7, Debian, Arch) and was looking for suggestions of which to pick and how to implement this. From what I gather, a type 1 hypervisor is a lightweight OS which simply provides VM management functionality. Will I get reasonable performance under each guest OS? Can all the guest OSs have access to a shared data drive, or is is best to have a storage server in another guest OS and mount it over the virtual network? What about gaming, is this feasible, or will I realistically need to run Win7 on bare metal? I'd appreciate any input.

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • Can I use VT-D with a windows host for a VM?

  I've got a fairly beefy gaming system that I also run occational virtual machines on. It runs windows 8 and the built in hyper V virtual machine software at the moment and has a core i7 3770 (which unlike the unlocked model, should support VT-D), an Asus P8Z77V and a gforce 660 video card(also asus). I figure that if I could use VT-D I could add a cheap dedicated 3d card for a VM, in case I wanted somewhat more than the 'basics'. I know KVM and Xen support this to some level on linux, but can I do so on windows? I'm open to switching VM software if need be.

• games and movies become too slow after some time

  On my gaming desktop, I was fixing my desktop's power supply when something seemed to burn (I got that stinging burning smell). However when I turned ON the computer (it was OFF before), everything seemed to be fine. However, I have noticed that now it becomes too slow if I play a game or movie on it. I am talking about the computer becoming painfully slow after about 5 minutes into the movie/game (it works fine otherwise e.g. browsing), it becomes so slow I can see individual frames from movies/games. What could be the problem? A fried video card? friend memory (RAM), something else? • Where to find information about ubuntu compatible or certified hardware/PC models

  I am buying a new desktop PC in early 2013, anyway this question should apply to someone intending to buy a new laptop/ultrabook as well. This machine is not meant for gaming, and if I ocasionally do it, I can survive with minimum graphics. However I may need some heavy multimedia edition or multitasking at times, so basically my greatest priority is a good processor, after that perhaps average graphic card (if onboards are not enough, I am still not informed enough about that), at least 4GB of RAM with possibility of expansion. I know there are some PC models specially designed to ship with Ubuntu, which is the OS I use the most these days. However, most people around me use Windows and some software with unsupported versions for Linux and not having a Windows license becomes a bit problematic. Given that, I would like to find information about which PC models or even manufacters currently on the market have the best compatibility with Ubuntu, I am still undecided between building my own desktop or buying a pre-made model, so I would like to find information both for certified models and certified hardware or even Ubuntu partners that may work closely with Canonical. Where to find this information in order to make sure that I will have a good experience with Ubuntu on my new PC in the years to come?

• Will buy simple Cocos2D bubbles iPad game for private use (source)

  Hi, First of all, sorry if this is the wrong place for posting this kind of request. IDK if is there already a marketplace on the stack community. I'm a fairly experienced iPhone/iPad developer with several Apps already published. I have a deep understanding of Objective-C and the Cocoa framework, as well as with the iPhone development tools. However, I have never used Cocos2d (or any other gaming engine for that matter) as I've mostly specialized in utilities/productivity Apps. I am in the urgent need of developing a really simple iPad game (for which I will provide all of the media assets - graphics and sounds) that needs to be deployed in about a week from now. Basically the game should allow the user to pop bubbles of different size and speed as they move from the bottom to the top of the screen. While I could take the time to read the documentation and start working on this game myself, I'm currently with a couple of other projects that I need to finish soon, so I would like to ask for the help of some other more experienced Cocos2D developer which could develop this game on its basic form for me. If you think you can help, please send me your quote, timing and, if possible, samples of previous work done with Cocos2D that would be similar to what I need. I can provide more detail upon request.   I know there was a somewhat similar question before: How to share CPU or RAM? But, let me just specify it a little more... When Microsoft Windows requires more RAM capacity than available it uses a swap-file to temporarily store the data there, this is actually something like a hard-drive-based RAM. This technology is used for many years. Theoretically, it shouldn't be too hard to implement a similar technology that uses the RAM of different computer(s) in the network for temporary data storage. This just requires a software that runs on computers in the network that accepts and returns data from/to the main computer and keep that data in the RAM; plus the operation system of the main computer must have the ability to use computers in the network instead of (or in addition to) the swap-file. I wonder, are there any implementations of this idea? This would allow users to build RAM clusters using all of their home or office computers, that will boost the performance of a single computer for some development/gaming/video tasks, etc.

  Gooday, i have this acer and i have alot of boot problems (i suspect windows 8) and now i want to try ubuntu but when i use an usb to "try" ubuntu after the boot i get a black screen. now ive read some of the forums and i found something about NOMODESET i have not tried this as i dont know what this does exactly. now i have found this wiki entry https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee , i am by far no programmer and always reading all those commands have always kept me of linux because im scared i will !@#$ things up. is there anyway i can go to NOMODESET in the ubuntu "trial" and can i also include the bumblebee futures (coding?) and in how many ways wil this affect my laptops perfomance? reading the bumblebee entry its seems to be something about nvidia optimus and i dont reallt care much for the power saving, but will it affect any performance? im not a heavy pc gamer but i like tho do some gaming and streaming and such also on a rather big TV in wich this laptop already has it flaws in some games not running properly on 65" if this doesn't work or u advise me not to do this what else can i do to fix windows 8 or either some other linux version? i thankyou in advance

  I was looking for a 24" monitor and bought the Dell 24" inch ultra sharp monitor which has DisplayPort( new keyword for me) seems it is equivalent to HDMI. Now I would like to enhance the display capabilities for my laptop and desktop(both have VGA output as of now). Couple of questions in mind: Is there a single HD graphic card which i could use for both desktop and laptop? I understand it has to be external but if its costly then I would stick on internal graphic card for my desktop. Please recommend external if its cost effective else I would go for internal one(Budget is around $70 or Rs 4000. Is there a HD card which I could use for both HD video and 5.1 channel audio output? I generally use the computer for office work/ listening music and watching movies, not gaming.

• What kind of projects are suited as a portfolio? [on hold]

  I was thinking about finishing up some hobby projects I used myself or am planing to use myself but I'm not sure if a future employer might be put off by them. For example, if I decided to create a custom website for an online (gaming, maybe) community instead of using an existing CMS, is it a good idea to provide a link to said community website or should I just put up the CMS and pretend like nobody actually uses it? Also, what about very specific things? I like linguistics and constructing languages. Obviously nobody wants to come up with 1000s of words so people usually use word generators or software to emulate sound shift or software to organise everything and produce dictionaries and such. Would such a project be too specific and too abstract for a portfolio or is the "he did programming work simply for enjoyment and his hobby and not just for money or grades" thing more important? It's quite an abstract hobby and most people don't even know that it's a thing and think the languages you hear in Game of Thrones, Avatar or Star Trek are just gibberish. Explaining such things to people is a pain to begin with especially if said people speak no other language. Would such things throw an employer off or is the content itself completely irrelevant? Thanks. Also, if this is not fitting for the programmers stackexchange, then please, don't close the thread right away but tell me where else to go because I got here though a closed question from stackoverflow. • Multiple "setups" on windows 7

  I would like to create multiple setups on Windows, that is, when I'm working with my computer I have some programs opened, after that I would like to change the setup/user to the "gaming setup" where the previous setup would hibernate and the computer would have all the resources free for me to play. I could have opened multiple tabs on firefox on each setup and they would be there when I come back. I understand that windows' switch user would make the programs run when I'm with the other user and that's not what I want. So, is that possible?

• How to Boot or "enter" into ubnutu 11.04 (Natty Narwhall) on PS3 after installing it?

  After failing to install ubuntu 11.04 Desktop version (burned on a dvd, because iso's file size was 726 Mb), in tried the alternate version (about 686 Mb) which i burned into a CD. During the installation process, i manually partitioned the hard drive using ext3. After the installation, the CD ejects itself and i hit "continue". In the k boot prompt i hit "enter" on my the keyboard. I see i welcome message in a dark background (a kind of full screen terminal/console called CLI i think) and was asked to enter my user name and password. After that, instead of booting into the beautiful desktop of Ubuntu, i saw this: ubuntu@my_name$ It was like a line of command i think, where you can use "sudo" commands. It is called a non-graphic mode i think. My my REAL problem is to enter Ubuntu 11.04 with the chocolate-colored background and the African music drum. I tried many commands to boot into the graphic mode of the system such as Ctr+Alt+F7 but nothing happened. In this case, i just saw numbers showing available blocks. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. I also tried startx and sudo startx without result. I DO bought a PS3 BOTH for gaming and for Ubuntu because i can't afford buying a PC. Please help me with my trouble dear Ubuntu 11.04 users. • Low end dedicated GPU vs. integrated Intel graphics (for light CAD work)

  I have been asked to spec a PC for an interior design business. They are going to do some AutoCAD work (but they won't be using massive datasets or anything), and also use Kitchen Draw, a program that has 3D visualization features and says, in its requirements, that "a recent NVidia or ATI card might be enough". Since they are very limited budget-wise, I had originally picked a GeForce GT 610 card, but this card is so low end that I'm left wondering whether it will be an improvement at all over the dedicated Intel HD2500 graphics chip that comes with the CPU (I will be using an Ivy-Bridge Intel i5). Most of the information I see around is for gaming, which isn't really relevant in my case. Basically, for the use case I've described (light 3D work), can one get away with a current Intel HD graphics chipset? And will a low end GPU like the GT 610 provide a noticeable improvement?
