  • How do you deal with web designers who are too afraid to read and touch PHP code?

    - by Lacrymology
    I've been hired to make a website and am working with a designer (who happens to be the guy who is in contact with the client and hired me, so no, I can't kick his ass out =) ) who's too afraid to touch into the php code, and is too newbie in html and css to give me good enough models, so the work of today will be going through his new html model of a half-programmed page and removing s and changing classes and the such. Is there some kind of tool, or some better workflow in order to make this easier for both of us? maybe I'm dealing with this the wrong way altogether, I'm new to web development, and I don't know enough html/css (and he supposedly does) to have him just give me a graphic mock-up and do the whole thing, so what we're doing is he gives me a static html page that looks like he wants, and I put around it =) can anyone give me some advice on this?

  • Choosing a new programming language to learn [on hold]

    - by Xelom
    I'm a Microsoft Stack(ASP.NET, C#) developer. Mainly, I develop server side software, windows services, restful apis etc. My client side interaction is really really low. So aside from C# I want to learn a new language. Time is precious and I want to give my focus to a language which have a future. My language list is: Scala (Powerful usage in Twitter) Go (Getting popular and channels are pretty awesome) Erlang (Stable server side programs. Used at Whatsapp) You can give advice for the above or you can give me a better option. My only exception is Objective-C. I don't want to get in that one. Thanks

  • Java: dangerous self-returning-recursive function by IOException?

    - by HH
    I had very errorsome Exception handling with if-clauses. An exception occurs if not found path. An exception returns the function again. The function is recursive. Safe? $ javac SubDirs.java $ java SubDirs Give me an path. . HELLO com TOASHEOU google common annotations base collect internal Give me an path. IT WON'T FIND ME, SO IT RETURNS ITSELF due to Exception caught Give me an path. $ cat SubDirs.java import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class SubDirs { private List<File> getSubdirs(File file) throws IOException { List<File> subdirs = Arrays.asList(file.listFiles(new FileFilter() { public boolean accept(File f) { return f.isDirectory(); } })); subdirs = new ArrayList<File>(subdirs); List<File> deepSubdirs = new ArrayList<File>(); for(File subdir : subdirs) { deepSubdirs.addAll(getSubdirs(subdir)); } subdirs.addAll(deepSubdirs); return subdirs; } public static void search() { try{ BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in)); String s; System.out.println("Give me an path."); while ((s = in.readLine()) != null && s.length() != 0){ SubDirs dirs = new SubDirs(); List<File> subDirs = dirs.getSubdirs(new File(s)); for ( File f : subDirs ) { System.out.println(f.getName()); } System.out.println("Give me an path."); } }catch(Exception e){ // Simple but is it safe? search(); } } public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException { search(); } }

  • Database indexes and their Big-O notation

    - by miket2e
    I'm trying to understand the performance of database indexes in terms of Big-O notation. Without knowing much about it, I would guess that: Querying on a primary key or unique index will give you a O(1) lookup time. Querying on a non-unique index will also give a O(1) time, albeit maybe the '1' is slower than for the unique index (?) Querying on a column without an index will give a O(N) lookup time (full table scan). Is this generally correct ? Will querying on a primary key ever give worse performance than O(1) ? My specific concern is for SQLite, but I'd be interested in knowing to what extent this varies between different databases too.

  • reading newlines with FORMAT statement

    - by peter.murray.rust
    I'm writing a preprocessor and postprocessor for Fortran input and output using FORMAT-like statements (there are reasons not to use a FORTRAN library). I want to treat the new line ("/") character correctly. I don't have a Fortran compiler immediately to hand. Is there a simple algorithm for working out how many newlines are written or consumed (This post just gives reading examples) [Please assume a FORTRAN77-like mentality in the FORTRAN code and correct any FORTRAN syntax on my part] UPDATE: no comments yet so I am reduced to finding a compiler and running it myself. I'll post the answers if I'm not beaten to it. No-one commented I had the format syntax wrong. I've changed it but there may still be errors Assume datafile 1 a b c d etc... (a) does the READ command always consume a newline? does READ(1, '(A)') A READ(1, '(A)') B give A='a' and B='b' (b) what does READ(1,'(A,/)') A READ(1,'(A)') B give for B? (I would assume 'c') (c) what does READ(1, '(/)') READ(1, '(A)') A give for A (is it 'b' or 'c') (d) what does READ(1,'(A,/,A)') A, B READ(1,'(A)') C give for A and B and C(can I assume 'a' and 'b' and 'c') (e) what does READ(1,'(A,/,/,A)') A, B READ(1,'(A)') C give for A and B and C(can I assume 'a' and 'c' and 'd')? Are there any cases in which the '/' is redundant?

  • System.Windows.Ria.Controls and POCO

    - by jvcoach23
    I'm trying to figure out how to use POCO for silverlight use. I found an article that appears it will step me through the basics. However, it has in it a reference to the System.Windows.Ria.Controls. i don't have that on my machine.. i found System.Windows.Ria but not one that has teh control on it. I just downloaded teh RIA beta today and installed it.. so should have the latest and greatest. Anyway.. Here is the link to the article... link text and here is the code in the xaml they refer to. <UserControl x:Class="Try1Silverlight.MainPage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:data="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls;assembly=System.Windows.Controls.Data" xmlns:riaControls="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls;assembly=System.Windows.Ria.Controls" xmlns:domain="clr-namespace:Try1Silverlight.Web" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" <data:DataGrid x:Name="CustomerList" ItemsSource="{Binding Data, ElementName=CustomerSource}"> </data:DataGrid> What have i done wrong that the Ria.Control is not there. thanks shannon
