  I think it is imperative for web application developers to know the answers surrounding the following general questions on web development irrespective of the programming language/framework used. What authentication mechanisms HTTP offer & what are their pros and cons? Why should one go for FORMS authentication? How to secure authentication or for that matter any transactions via HTTP? How to maintain state in HTTP? What are the downsides to maintaining state via cookie & what happens when browsers disable them? Security issues like cross site scripting, session hijacking etc. What other questions a web developer should have answers for similar to the ones above that are programming language/web framework agnostic?

• Using SortableRows and know when rows have been moved

  I want to take advantage of the sortableRows property of the jqGrid. How do I detect when a row has been moved. I have studied the documentation and looked for examples but haven't found much. I do believe it is something like jQuery("#grid").sortableRows({connectWith:'#gird', ondrop: function(){ alert("row moved") }}); but that does not work. I can move the rows, but don't seemed to have trapped the event. Is there something wrong with my syntax or my approach in general. Basically, I need to know that the rows have been rearranged so I can be sure they get saved with their new order. Thanks

There are people who mercilessly educate themselves, and there are others who are a bit ho-hum about it, feeling a bit of apathy. If you remove all of the risk associated surrounding a "refocus" of your career - what choices would you make? What things would you learn and what would you do with it?   I've got an Asp.net MVC app and before being able to go live, the IT have requested for us to comply with their password policy. The flexibility of AspnetSqlMembershipProvider doesn’t quite satisfy the requirement. The password strength and length rules are as follows: one lowercase one Uppercase one number and or special character 8 characters in length so far, aspnetsqlmembershipprovider is good... Not allowed to use: Dictionary words Names, real or fictional Plain language phrases Dates Telephone numbers Car registration numbers User IDs Postal codes Organization name Only the first 4 criteria are satisfied by the aspnetsqlmembershipprovider. Do you know of any third party products that offers this functionality (preferably in the form of a custom membership provider)?

• Need to know who is hogging my bandwidth?

  I have an ethernet connection to my iMac and with Internet sharing I am broadcasting the wireless network from my mac rather than using a wireless router. I use it to connect other devices wirelessly to the internet. But this makes all the traffic flow through my iMac. I wanted a way to analyze the traffic so that I know what connected devices are hogging the bandwidth at a given time and from which websites? I installed wireshark for mac and played around a little but it seems like an overkill when you first look at it. Can someone please help with few instructions to get what I need or any other way other than using wireshark? Thanks Dev.

• ASP.net MVC3 entities, don't know how to count

  I have 2 tables, 1 with countries, 1 with states. The states table has a column with Population. I'm using entities and I have created a List of states for the countries public class TblCountries { //Entities for my table country ... public List<tblStates> States { get; set; } } So now I can for example List all the states that belong to a country. Now what I want to do is count the population, so I can show the population that of an entire country. I tried using in my view @foreach (var item in Model.Countries) { @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.States.Count<population>) } But this doesn't work, anyone know how to do this? • Confusion with cookie session token and oauth2.0 don't know where to go anymore

  Hi guys, I'm completely confused, frustrated and nothing seems to make sense and work any more. I' dev some iframe fb app and i've been using the javascript sdk (FB.Init()) to get the access_token, but doesn't always work, sometimes i'm already logged into FB and doesn't works... Did some reading, and read also that there is problems using cookies in iframes in Opera and IE, so I was thinking in use the OAuth 2.0 but i'm not sure how via facebook sdk c# and now I'm now completely lost, don't know if i still need to use the javascript FB.Init(). Documentation out there is poor and unclear, a lot of stuff refers to old code, and after hours of reading, jumping on examples, i'm completely messed up and confused. • How to know from a bash script if the user abruptly closes ssh session

  I have a bash script that acts as the default shell for a user loging in trough ssh. It provides a menu with several options one of wich is sending a file using netcat. The netcat of the embedded linux I'm using lacks the -w option, so if the user closes the ssh connection without ever sending the file, the netcat command waits forever. I need to know if the user abruptly closes the connection so the script can kill the netcat command and exit gracefully. Things I've tried so far: Trapping the SIGHUP: it is not issued. The only signal issued i could find is SIGCONT, but I don't think it's reliable and portable. Playing with the -t option of the read command to detect a closed stdin: this would work if not for a silly bug in the embedded read command (only times out on the first invocation)

• How can an Android Service know that its not bound to any Activities

  I have an Android Service that I would like to keep running even after the last Activity has been popped off the stack, or the User has chosen to do something else. Essentially the Service is listening for changes on a remote server, and I would like to generate a Notification if and only if an Activity from the app isn't running(or visible). In other words, I don't want the Notifications to occur while the User is directly interacting with the app. In the case where the User is directly interacting with the app, the Service will notify the Activity and update appropriate UI elements based on the changes. I plan to implement this through the Observer pattern. How can the Service know if none of apps Activities are bound to it? Thanks, J

To keep long story short, when asking this question I'm asking it as a developer who's coming from Flash world - great graphics/sounds/media support, fully cross-platform, ability to combine several SWFs within a "movie" (which also implies code reusability). A Flash developer have pretty much freedom. What are most important things that i must know in order to jump into silverlight development? • How to know when a user console is locked or has logged "back into" windows

  This is in regards to applications that run in the taskbar but should be applicable to standard apps, Winforms, WPF, etc. Question: I am after some method (preferably via managed code) to be notified when a user either has their screen "locked" while my app is running and/or know when they log back in. GMail Notifier does this sort of thing for example, if my PC is locked for a while when I log in again it shows a list of emails that arrived since locking the PC. I'm looking to replicate that kind of functionality. Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this?

• factorygirl rails, says "top required" in my spec - don't know how to fix

  I get the following error message when I run my tests. It says that the problem is in my lecture_spec, and that the top is required. • How to know about MySQL 'refused connections'

  Hello, I am using MONyog to montitor my two mysql servers. I get alert emails from MONyog when something goes wrong. There is an error I could not find out why. It says: Connection History: Percentage of refused connections) - 66.67% the percentage is not important, this is just about having refused connections. I get this email every half an hour. So this is like a constant situation. This must be my mistake, because I just set up those servers and there is no chance somebody else could be interfering the servers. MONyog advices me: Try to isolate users/applications that are using an incorrect password or trying to connect from unauthorized hosts. A client will be disallowed to connect if it takes more than connect_timeout seconds to connect. Set the value of log_warnings system variable to 2. This will force the MySQL server to log further information about the error. I added log_warnings=2 to my.cnf and I enabled logging like this: [mysqld_safe] . . log_warnings=2 log-error = /var/log/mysql/error.log . . . . [mysqld_safe] . log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log . . I cannot see any warnings at /var/log/mysql/error.log I can see some warnings at /var/log/mysqld.log but they are about something else. In sum, my question is how can I detect refused connections? • Things one needs to know while writing a game engine

  I have been dabbling in game development as a hobby for a while now, and I cannot seam to quite get my games to sparkle at least a bit with some graphics. I have decided to write a simple test game engine that only focuses on the representation of graphics - shapes, textures and surfaces. While I have a few very simple game engines designed for my own games under my belt, I want to create a game engine that I can use to display and play with graphics. I'm going to do this in C++. Since this is my first time with a major engine, the engine in not going to focus on 3D graphics, it's going to be a mixture of isometric and 2D graphics. My previous engines have incorporated (been able to draw) or focused on simple flat (almost 2D) non impressive graphic designs and representations of: the player NPCs objects walls and surfaces textures Also, I had some basic AI and sometimes even sound. They also saved and loaded games. They didn't have a map editor or a level editor. Is this going to be a problem in the future? At this time I have to point out that some of my games didn't get finished because I was to lazy to write the few last levels. My question at this point would be: What are some things one should know if one wants write (develope) a better graphical game engine with all it's functions.

• .NET: How to know when serialization is completed?

  When I construct my control (which inherits DataGrid), I add specific rows and columns. This works great at design time. Unfortunately, at runtime I add my rows and columns in the same constructor, but then the DataGrid is serialized (after the constructor runs) adding more rows and columns. After serialization is complete, I need to clear everything and re-initialize the rows and columns. Is there a protected method that I can override to know when the control is done serializing? Of course, I'd prefer to not have to do the work in the constructor, throw it away, and do it again after (potential) serialization. Is there a preferred event that is the equivalent of "set yourself up now", so that it is called once whether I'm serialized or not? Anymore ideas? i can't be the first person to create a custom control.

• Multiple Unpacking Assignment in Python when you don't know the sequence length

  The textbook examples of multiple unpacking assignment are something like: import numpy as NP M = NP.arange(5) a, b, c, d, e = M # so of course, a = 0, b = 1, etc. M = NP.arange(20).reshape(5, 4) # numpy 5x4 array a, b, c, d, e = M # here, a = M[0,:], b = M[1,:], etc. (ie, a single row of M is assigned each to a through e) (My Q is not numpy specfic; indeed, i would prefer a pure python solution.) W/r/t the piece of code i'm looking at now, i see two complications on that straightforward scenario: i usually won't know the shape of M; and i want to unpack a certain number of items (definitely less than all items) and i want to put the remainder into a single container so back to the 5x4 array above, what i would very much like to be able to do is, for instance, assign the first three rows of M to a, b, and c respectively (exactly as above) and the rest of the rows (i have no idea how many there will be, just some positive integer) to a single container, all_the_rest = []. I'm not sure if i have explained this clearly; in any event, if i get feedback i'll promptly edit my Question.

• Why does my .NET 4 application know .NET 4 is not installed

  I developed an application that targeted .NET 4 the other day and XCOPY-installed it to a Windows XP machine. I had told the owner of the machine that they would need to install .NET Framework 4 to run my app and he told me he did (not a reliable source). When I ran the application I was presented with a message box that said this app requires .NET Framework 4, would I like to install it? Clicking the Yes button took me to the Microsoft web site and a few clicks later .NET 4 was installed, and the application successfully launched. Now I normally don't develop applications that target the latest version of .NET, I always target the lowest version I can (what features do I really need?). So this was my first .NET 4 app (and I only targeted 4 because it used a library that did). In the past, XCOPY-installing .NET applications to a machine that didn't have the correct version of .NET installed resulted in the application simply crashing on startup with no useful information presented to the user. Was it built into my app because I targeted .NET X? Was it something already installed on the target machine? I love the feature, I just want to know precisely how to leverage it in the future.

• How do I know which Object I clicked?

  Here's the deal: I'm working on a personal portfolio in AS3 and I've run into a problem which I can't seem to find a logical answer to. I want everything (well, most of it) to be editable with an XML file, including my menu. My menu is just a Sprite with some text on it and a Tweener-tween, no big deal. But, I forgot to think of a way how I can determine which menu-item I have clicked. This is in my Main.as private function xmlLoaded(e:Event):void { xml = e.target.xml; menu = new Menu(xml); menu.x = 0; menu.y = stage.stageHeight / 2 - menu.height / 2; addChild(menu); } In Menu.as public function Menu(xml:XML) { for each (var eachMenuItem:XML in xml.menu.item) { menuItem = new MenuItem(eachMenuItem); menuItem.y += yPos; addChild(menuItem); yPos += menuItem.height + 3; } } and in my MenuItem.as, everything works - I have a fancy tween when I hover over it, but when I click a menu-item, I want something to appear ofcourse. How do I know which one I clicked? I've tried with pushing everything in an array, but that didn't work out well (or maybe I'm doing it wrong). Also tried a global counter, but that's not working either because the value will always be amount of items in my XML file. Also tried e.currentTarget in my click-function, but when I trace that, all of them are "Object Sprite".. I need something so I can give each a unique "name"? Thanks in advance!

  Hi there I'm just starting an assignment for uni and it's raised a question for me. I found that if I tried to make the 'trimmed' array by something like: char trimmed[len]; then the compiler would throw up a message saying that a constant was expected on this line. I assume this meant that for some reason you can't use variables as the array length when initialising an array, although something tells me that can't be right. So instead I made my array by allocating some memory to a char pointer. I understand that this function is probably waaaaay sub-optimal for what it is trying to do, but what I really want to know is: 1. Can you normally initialise an array using a variable to declare the length like: char trimmed[len]; ? 2. If I had an array that was of that type (char trimmed[]) would it have the same return type as a pointer to char (ie char*). 3. If I make my array by callocing some memory and allocating it to a char pointer, how do I free this memory. It seems to me that once I have returned this array, I can't access it to free it as it is a local variable. Many thanks in advance Joe

  I have a class. The problem now is, after a few attempt, I'm still in huge error. My problem is I don't know how to properly declare a new object for this class, inside another cpp file. I wanted to call/trigger the functions from this RebarHandler class from my other cpp file. I keep on getting problems like, 'used without being initialized', 'debug assertion failed' and so on. In the other cpp file, I include the RebarHandler.h and did like this: CRebarHandler *test=NULL; test->setButtonMenu2(); When compile, I does not give any error. But, when run time, it gives error and my IE crash. I need help.
