  • How to deal with different programming styles in a team?

    We have a small dev team (only 3 developers) and we recently got a new team member. While he is a smart coder, his coding style is completely different from ours. Our existing code base contains mostly readable, clean and maintainable code, but the new team member is quickly changing many files, introducing ugly hacks and shortcuts, using defines all over the place, adding functions in the wrong places, etc. My question is if others have experienced such a situation before, and if anyone has tips on how to talk to him.

  • Is there any way to lock down Photoshop to prevent designers from creating styles that cannot be rendered in CSS?

    Photoshop is a much more powerful design tool than CSS, and given free reign to design at will, designers will often tweak things like font settings to a degree that cannot be recreated on the web. Is there any way to lock down Photoshop, or perhaps run an equivalent of the Office 2010 "Compatability report" that shows the designer where they have designed something that cannot be rendered on a web page. Something like the old-school "web-safe" colour palette, but for an overall design.

  • Chrome UI styles are not working under Ubuntu! GTK Theme is not working!

    Chrome Version : 31.0.1650.63 (Official Build 238485) Extensions : Google docs, Lastpass Im on a brand new system, just installed Ubuntu. When I open chrome, normally the search box, alert windows are styled according to my current system GTK theme. But now they look like classic windows theme! Tried different themes and adjusting the theme under Settings Appearance in Chrome but still no use. How to fix this? Here's a screenshot :

    A developer writes if/else blocks with one-line code statements like: if (condition) // Do this one-line code else // Do this one-line code Another uses curly braces for all of them: if (condition) { // Do this one-line code } else { // Do this one-line code } A developer first instantiates an object, then uses it: HelperClass helper = new HelperClass(); helper.DoSomething(); Another developer instantiates and uses the object in one line: new HelperClass().DoSomething(); A developer is more easy with arrays, and for loops: string[] ordinals = new string[] {'First', 'Second', 'Third'}; for (i = 0; i < ordinals.Length; i++) { // Do something } Another writes: List<string> ordinals = new List<string>() {'First', 'Second', 'Third'}; foreach (string ordinal in ordinals) { // Do something } I'm sure that you know what I'm talking about. I call it coding style (cause I don't know what it's called). But whatever we call it, is it good or bad? Does encouraging it have an effect of higher productivity of developers? Should we ask developers to try to write code the way we tell them, so to make the whole system become style-consistent?

  • EE vs Computer Science: Effect on Developers' Approaches, Styles?

    Are there any systematic differences between software developers (sw engineers, architect, whatever job title) with an electronics or other engineering background, compared to those who entered the profession through computer science? By electronics background, I mean an EE degree, or a self-taught electronics tinkerer, other types of engineers and experimental physicists. I'm wondering if coming into the software-making professions from a strong knowledge of flip flops, tristate buffers, clock edge rise times and so forth, usually leads to a distinct approach to problems, mindsets, or superior skills at certain specialties and lack of skills at others, when compared to the computer science types who are full of concepts like abstract data types, object orientation, database normalization, who speak of "closures" in programming languages - things that make little sense to the soldering iron crowd until they learn enough programming. The real world, I'm sure, offers a wild range of individual exceptions, but for the most part, can you say there are overall differences? Would these have hiring implications e.g. (to make up something) "never hire an electron wrangler to do database design"? Could knowing about any differences help job seekers find something appropriate more effectively? Or provide enlightenment or some practical advice for those who find themselves misfits in a particular job role? (Btw, I've never taken any computer science classes; my impression of exactly what they cover is fuzzy. I'm an electronics/physics/art type, myself.)

  • Do any database "styles" use discrete files for their tables?

    I've been talking to some people at work who believe some versions of a database store their data in discrete tables. That is to say you might open up a folder and see one file for each table in the database then several other supporting files. They do not have a lot of experience with databases but I have only been working with them for a little over a half year so I am not a canonical source of info either. I've been touting the benefits of SQL Server over Access (and before this, Access over Excel. Great strides have been made :) ). But, other people were of the impression that the/one of the the benefit(s) of using SQL Server over Access was that all the data was not consolidated down into one file. Yet, SQL Server packs everything into a single .mdf file (plus the log file). My question is, is there an RDBMS which holds it's data in multiple discrete files instead of one master file? And if the answer is yes, why do it one way over the other?

  • Will Django user permissions work for models with inline tabular forms of other models?

    I am setting up DJango admin to make a model editable. On the same page I have tabular inline of a child model. Everything works as expected. Now I want to restrict permission on the tabular inline child form. Specifically remove update and delete permissions on it. I have tried removing the permissions for the admin user using the 'user permissions' of that user. However, it does not work. Does DJango respect the user permissions in regards to inline model forms?

  • jQuery after show() assumes that display:inline is :hidden. Why?

    With jQuery 1.4.2, :hidden filter is not filtering out elements that were hidden, but i've made then visible by calling show(). Filter assumes it is still hidden. Is this bug or am i missing something? Consider the following code: $("td.ms-authoringcontrols > span[id*='_ParallelApprovers']:hidden:first").css("display") "none" $("td.ms-authoringcontrols > span[id*='_ParallelApprovers']:hidden:first").show() Object $("td.ms-authoringcontrols > span[id*='_ParallelApprovers']:hidden:first").css("display") "inline" // ?? Let me scratch my head... $("td.ms-authoringcontrols > span[id*='_ParallelApprovers']:hidden:first").is(":hidden") true //element with "display:inline", visible in browser, but yet it is hidden Instead of "inline", you would expect "none", because :hidden filter was used. What it does is from an array of objects it selects first hidden element. Each time i call these lines of code, i expect them to select next hidden element (not the one i just showed).

    Hi all I'm stuck. Tried all the angles but i cant seem to get it working. I have 2 inline calendars. When i select a date from the dtFrm calendar it sets the date on the dtTo calendar as expected. I just cant seem to set the EndDate of the dtTo calendar. Anyone manage to solve this one? Thanks!   • Customizing UPK outputs (Part 1)

    If you are familiar with Oracle's User Productivity Kit, you are aware that UPK is a great product for rapidly developing application training. Did you know that you can also customize the UPK outputs to incorporate your company's logo, colors, and preferred styles? There are several areas that support customization: Logo - Within the developer, you can change the logo for all outputs at one time. Player - The player output uses a style sheet that can be updated to change colors, graphics and other visual branding. Documentation - The print documentation uses a Word-based template that can be modified to match your corporate standards. I'll discuss the first one today, and we'll cover the others in subsequent blogs. Before you begin: If you are working in a multi-user environment, ensure that you have "Modify" permissions for the Styles directory under the Publishing folder. Make a copy of the current styles. This recommendation is for backup purposes. If something goes wrong, you will have a way to recover. Consider creating your own category by creating a new folder under the Styles directory, and then copying the styles into your new folder. When you upgrade to future versions, the system will overwrite the standard styles with any new feature additions and updates that have been made. With your own category, all of your customizations will remain intact. To update the logos in all outputs: From the Tools Menu, choose Customize Logo. Select the category if necessary. Browse to select your logo. You can use any size logo, in any graphic format (*.bmp, *.gif, *.jpeg, *.jpg, *.png, or *.tif). The system will make a copy of your logo and add it to each of the publishing styles. Choose OK, and the update process begins. It may take a few minutes. Helpful hints: The logo you select is used "as is" - no resizing or cropping occurs during this process. The Customize Logo process automates replacing all the logo graphics for online deployment (small_logo.gif and large_logo.gif) and the headers in the documentation outputs. You can manually replace these graphics on an individual style basis if you prefer. The recommended logo size is 230 pixels wide x 44 pixels high. Prior to updating the logos, the system will display the size of the selected logo. If you use a logo that is much larger than the recommended size, the heading area will resize to fit the new logo, but that will impact the space available for your training material. If you are using a multi-user environment, the system will check out the publishing styles to you for the logo updates. After you review the styles, remember to check them in so the rest of your team can access the new changes. I'd be interested in hearing (or seeing) how you brand your UPK.   • Will client side performance improve if images/scripts/styles on different subdomains?

    Hi, I have a domain specifically for static content, so cookies don't travel along with requests to images/scripts/css. Now, I think I've read somewhere that most browsers only open one download thread for each domain/subdomain, so different static content can't be downloaded in parallel if on the same domain. Will it make difference for browsers if i place scripts in script.mycdn.com, styles in css.mycdn.com and images in images.mycdn.com? Will it allow to let browser download images at the same time as scripts and styles? mycdn.com is of course a made up name :) Thanks! Andrey

  • GWT: how to have different styles for splitters in different SplitLayoutPanels?

    I know you can change the styles of the splitters with the defaults styles listed in the docs: .gwt-SplitLayoutPanel .gwt-SplitLayoutPanel-HDragger { horizontal dragger } .gwt-SplitLayoutPanel .gwt-SplitLayoutPanel-VDragger { vertical dragger } and we've done that in earlier development. However, now I'm developing new stuff and would like to use a different style for the splitters in a new SplitLayoutPanel. Unfortunately, we haven't or can't split the app into different modules, which might make this easier. I tried creating a new style and applying it to my new SplitLayoutPanel, but it didn't appear to have any effect on the splitters. I thought there might be a method to get a handle on the splitters in order to apply the new style to only them, but I didn't find any such method.

  • trying to figure out how to bridge two virtual networks together and in turn bridge that to the internet for a virtual inline IDS/IPS system

    I'm trying to figure out how to bridge two vmware (server or workstation, workstation) or virtualbox networks together with a linux IDS/IPS system transparently inline between both the virtual networks. How do I accomplish this? I understand how to bridge to virtual networks together, but how to I make the linux virtual machine sit between them and force traffic to go across the transparent bridge? I would like to have something along the lines of: vmnet a various vms host-only network ---- inline linux box vmnet a boxes forced to go through here to get to the internet --- vmnet b network with internet access configured as either NAT or bridged -- internet I know that basically the linux box needs two virtual nics, one on vmnet a and vmnet b, but other than that, I don't know how to force all the traffic to go across the "transparent" bridging linux box on its way to the internet. Do vmnet a and b have to be the same ip network with the same default route? does vmnet a not have a default route and vmnet b have a default route? I've read in vmware forums that on the linux host you need to change permissions on the vmnet files for promiscuous mode? is this true? how do you configure this scenario on a windows box?

    We are doing some refactoring to a 20 years old legacy codebase, and I'm having a discussion with my colleague about the comments format in the code (plsql, java). There is no a default format for comments, but in most cases people do something like this in the comment: // date (year, year-month, yyyy-mm-dd, dd/mm/yyyy), (author id, author name, author nickname) and comment the proposed format for future and past comments that I want is: // {yyyy-mm-dd}, unique_author_company_id, comment My colleague says that we only need the comment, and must reformat all past and future comments to this format: // comment My arguments: I say for maintenance reasons, it's important to know when and who did a change (even this information is in the SCM). The code is living, and for that reason has a history. Because without the change dates it's impossible to know when a change was introduced without open the SCM tool and search in the long object history. because the author is very important, a change of authors is more credible than a change of authory Agility reasons, no need to open and navigate through the SCM tool people would be more afraid to change something that someone did 15 years ago, than something that was recently created or changed. etc. My colleague's arguments: The history is in the SCM Developers must not be aware of the history of the code directly in the code Packages gets 15k lines long and unstructured comments make these packages harder to understand What do you think is the best approach? Or do you have a better approach to solve this problem?

  • Are there any inline code validation libraries available for something similar to TryRuby.org or CodeSchool.com? [closed]

    Recently a lot of browser-based training sites have been spawned. These include tryruby.org, codeacademy.org, codeschool.org and the Udacity site uses something seemingly similar. They allow the user to type code in say Ruby or Python, this is then sent to the server and the output posted back to the browser. Are there libraries available for in-browser code validation? How would you approach this? Suggestions?
