  • The Apple iPad &ndash; I&rsquo;m gonna get it!

    Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Well, heck, here comes another non-techie blogpost. You know I’m a geek, so I love gadgets! I found it RATHER interesting to see all the negative news on the blogosphere about the iPad. The main bitch points are - No Multi tasking No Flash Just a bigger iPhone. So here’s the deal! My view is, the above 3 are EXACTLY what I had personally hoped for in the Apple iPad. Before the release, I had gone on the record saying - “If the Apple Tablet is able to run full fledged iTunes (so I can get rid of iTunes on my desktop, I don’t like iTunes on Windows), can browse the net, can read PDFs, and will be under $1000, I’ll buy it”. Well, so, the released iPad wasn’t exactly like my dream tablet. The biggest downer IMO was it’s inability to run full iTunes. But, really, in retrospect, I like the newly released iPad. And here is why. No Multi tasking and No Flash, means much better battery life. Frankly, I rarely multi task on my laptop/desktop .. yeah I know my OS does .. but ME – I don’t multi task, and I don’t think you do either!! As I type this blogpost, I have a few windows running behind the scenes, but they are simply waiting for me to get back to them. The only thing truly running and I am making use of, other than this blogost, is media player playing some music – which the iPad can do. Also, I am logged into IM/Email – which again, iPad can do via notifications. It does the limited multitasking I need, without chewing down on batteries. Smart thinking, precisely the reason I love the iPhone. I don’t want a bulky battery consuming machine. Lack of flash? Okay sure, I can’t see Hulu on my iPad. That’s some loss. I can see youtube. Also, per Adobe I can’t see some porn sites, which I don’t want to see on my iPad. But, Flash is heavy. Especially flash video. My dream is to see silverlight run on the iPhone and iPad. No flash = not such a big loss. Speaking of battery life – 10 hours is plenty. I haven’t been away from electricity for that long usually, so I’m okay with charging it up when it runs low. It’s really not such a big deal honestly. Finally, eBook functionality – wow! I went on the record saying, eBook readers are not for me, but seriously, the iPad is perfect for my eBook needs at least. And as far it being just a bigger iPhone? I’ve always wanted a bigger iPhone, precisely for the eBook reading experience. I love my iPhone, I love the apps on it. The only thing that sucks about the iPhone is battery life, but other than that, it is the best gadget I have ever bought! And something that runs on mobile chips, is that thin, and those newly written apps .. mail, calendar .. I am very very excited to get my iPad, which will be the 64gig 3G version. The biggest plus in an iPad ……… no contract on data. I am *hoping*, this means that I can buy a SIM card in Europe, and use the iPad here. That would be killer awesome! But hey, if I had to pick downers in the iPad, they would be - - I wish they had a 128G Version. Now that we have a good video viewing machine, I know I’d chew up space quickly.- Sync over WIFI, seriously Apple.  Both for iPhone and iPad.- 3 month wait!!- Existing iPhone users should get a discount on the iPad data plan.   • U1 music shows unknown artist, how can I make it recognize m4a files?

    Hello all, I am in the process of uploading my music library as a backup to U1, but I figured, why not also enjoy Ubuntu 1 music on my iPhone? With a few difficulties to start, the upload is now in progress, but I've noticed that there is a huge percentage of files in the unknown artist folder, and I believe it is all of my m4a files. They play fine, but without any information. Coming from an iTunes background, and having bought the majority of my music on the iTunes store, I wonder how I could make this work, easily? I am on Maverick (afaik), but About Ubuntu shows 11.04. I use Banshee as my music manager, and I monitor my sync using Ubuntu one preferences, ubuntuone-indicator and magicicada. The total file size of my music folder is 38.9GB. Thank you for your help!! And apologies if I couldn't find a thread where this was already covered...

  • How to use Zune software to listen to podcasts with generic MP3 player?

    I listen to a bunch of podcasts - a great way to fill the otherwise mindless space of a daily commute. My MP3 player is a Transonic brand, appears on my computer as a generic storage device. I've been using iTunes to download the podcasts, and manually moving the files out of the disk folder onto my player, but this is pretty tedious. iTunes also fails to recognise that the files are gone and leaves them in the list. (Actually, iTunes for windows is pretty much a dog, but that's a different rant.) The Zune software is 99% of what I want in a podcast downloader - performs well, looks nice, downloads reliably and so on. Some features - like only downloading the next five unheard episodes of a podcast - are superb. However, if I manually move the files across to the MP3 player, the Zune software concludes that the file has never been downloaded, and downloads it again. This leads me to my question: What is a good way to use the Zune software to download podcasts for listening on a generic MP3 player? Are there any addons for the Zune software to make this easier? Registry hacks? Can I configure the Zune software to not download the same episode multiple times? Is there a way for the Zune software to populate my MP3 player directly, instead of having to copy files?

  • How can I wipe my iPod classic and fix any bad sectors on the hard drive without killing it?

    My iPod never finishes syncing and only syncs audio, not pictures or video - any ideas as to how I can fix it? My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated? Update I have eliminated problems with the files, PC or iTunes as they sync fine to other iPods. I have also eliminated the cable by trying different cables which work with other iPods. What I'd really like to know is if there is any way to more fundamentally wipe the iPod safely, attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard drive and then start from scratch. Anyone ever managed this?

  • Is there a good alternative to Videora iPod Converter?

    I use Videora to convert my videos (in DivX/XviD format) to something I can play on my iPod Classic. I really dislike it. It's clunky, riddled with adverts, sometimes doesn't convert properly (the infamous "invalid public atom" error - see Google for more) and has a UI that truly stinks. On the upside, it's free, accepts a list of video files (via the oddly hard to find "1-click convert" button) and just gets on with the converting as it already knows the correct settings for my iPod. One final nice touch is that once they are converted, it'll automatically upload them into iTunes. Are there any alternatives which have all the upsides but none of the downsides? Bonus points if they can set the metadata in iTunes correctly for TV shows (season, show, episode) and delete the converted file afterwards (as my iTunes settings means that a copy is made elsewhere). I've looked at a bunch of applications (handbrake, virtualdub, mediacoder, format factory, any video converter, convertxtodvd) but many of them fail the "just select a list of files and get on with converting" test - let alone all the other features I want. I have no desire to individually set the video size of each file or the codec or the post-processing options. I'm currently using the command line version of HandBrake (handbrakecli) and a hand-written DOS batch file to go through every file in a folder and convert it. It does most of what I want, just not in a very slick way. Can anyone recommend anything better? It needs to work on Windows 7 and be free.

  • Quicktime won't install on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

    Hi! I am trying to install quicktime (actually just need iTunes..but then iTunes needs qt), but it fails. There seems to be a problem with the folder C:\Program Files(x86)\QuickTime\ - Quick Time wants to write the file QTTask.exe, but complains that it does not have permission to do so. Same thing happens with \PropertyPanels\PanelHelperBase.qpa I have tried deleting all Apple programs (in the order suggested in the support forum) and also tried to delete the temp folder. That did not work. I have tried to manually adjust the permissions of the QuickTime folder - no effect. I have run the installation file with admin rights and with different compatibility modes to no effect. I consider myself to be an experienced user - able to solve most problems - but now I am stuck. I need some input / fresh ideas on how to tackle the problem. This is very annoying as I cannot sync iPhone/iPad/iPod while iTunes is not running - due to the stupid (sorry) idea of only have your device linked to one library. Please help. Thanks!

  • Sync, share and backup policy using NAS

    Trying to come up with a way to keep in sync while sharing and keeping a backup of my music/photos and movies. Currently I have an iMac in Greece and a MBP with me in the UK. As a result I've ended up with 2 iPhoto and iTunes libraries not to mention Documents scattered here and there, user settings etc. I also like to have a backup in case of a drive failure or the need to clean install. It seems that iPhoto and iTunes don't work really well with networked libraries. The way I think about it is to have a NAS where I keep my iTunes and iPhoto library but also rsync daily to my MBP to have a local copy. That way my files are shared across the network as well as act like a backup. In addition I get to have my files wherever I take my MBP but also have the ability to clean install. The tricky part comes from keeping in sync the iMac which is miles away. Again I'm considering a mirror setup (NAS, rsync to the iMac) as well as an rsync between the two NAS. It pretty much resembles the way Dropbox works, sans the requirement to go through their servers but I'm no "superuser" and don't really know if it is even feasible to have such a setup. Looks like there are so many things that can go wrong.

  • iPhone: Compressing .app files in command line (Mac OS X) removes CodeSigning

    I am trying to do a simple build automation of my iPhone apps with TeamCity, but having this nagging issue.. When I manually pickup and install .app file from the build folder it works great (syncs smoothly with iTunes and I can see the app on my phone) But when I try to zip this with /bin/zip or ditto...then the zipped contents loose the CodeSigning (iTunes says that it cannot install this app because its not signed) I have tried different combinations of these.. ditto -ck --rsrc --keepParent HelloWorld.app HelloWorld.zip Any more ideas?

    I am trying to launch an appstore page with either of the calls: [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/myappname/id999999999?mt=8"]]; [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://www.itunes.com/apps/myappname"]]; Both of these urls work when I enter them in a browser. However, from both simulator and device, I get a "Your request could not be completed" error dialog right after it appears to try to launch the appstore. Is there something obvious that I'm doing wrong?

  • How can I have a web link perform an action in a specific desktop application?

    The specific situation is I have a .zip file that I want to open with a certain application. However, I don't want all ZIP files associated with that application. I think the answer is that instead of saying, "download this zip file, and open it with application X" I could have the browser basically go well my desktop application to go fetch it on its own (the same way directives like itunes: mailto: or aim: do things like launch the itunes store, add buddies, etc). Thoughts?

I want to drag and drop whole folder (even with sub folders) and keep the structure.   • How do I upload a file when I know the client's filepath?

    I'm interested in the way Sonic Living detects your iTunes library XML file. It prompts the user to approve its actions, then automatically uploads the XML file based on the client OS (and assuming the default installation path of iTunes). How the heck does it do that? None of the upload libraries I've looked at have this feature. They all assume that a user will click "Select file..." then browse around for the right thing to upload.
