  Is there any way to tell if the host that a script is running on is a VirtualBox guest VM? Ideally I'm looking for a cross-platform way. I would think this is next to impossible unless, maybe, something in the Guest Additions provides this. Thanks!

• phpmyadmin error #2002 cannot connect to mysql server

  I am getting the error in the title when trying to connect to my MySQL server. I have reinstalled MySQL and PHP several times and tried a slew of command line work based on information I searched out. web.mysql is running and I know that my mysql.sock exists and is located in ~/private/tmp/ and also in ~/tmp/. I also have plenty of hard drive space. I have installed and setup phpMyAdmin correctly only adding a password to 'Password for config auth'. I have also connected to the server via Sequel Pro. Why can't I connect to the server via phpMyAdmin? I'm on a 64-bit Intel Mac running Snow Leopard

• How Do I enable Safe Asynchronous Write With NFS?

  The NFSv3 documentation talks alot about the concept of "safe asynchronous writes" (last bullet of A1): http://nfs.sourceforge.net/#section_a This is NOT referring to the sync/async option in the server exports file (as the async option in the exports file is NOT safe). As I understand it, safe asynchronous writes is a hybrid between the sync/async exports option. It allows for a server to reply back without flushing to stable storage immediately, but the client will not remove the write request from cache until it has received confirmation that it has been committed to stable storage (and also detects if the server looses power/reboots). I believe that this option is set on the client side, but I have not come across any documentation that shows how to do this. Any ideas?

• Find an old static IP address on a mac backup?

  I have an old backup of a mac via time machine, and I was wondering if there is some sort of accessible file that would have the static IP of the old computer it was backed up from. If you are curious, I am in IT and it is a PITA to get a new static IP here. I am just trying to use the old one to save some hassle. I've tried searching through the system log with no success (but I might be doing it wrong- grep with a regexp for an IP). Thanks!

  i'm trying to send the iOS device name along with the deviceToken to my server in didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken.. my device has an apostrophe in it and the request string shows as ....&name=John+Doe’s+iPhone ... I've tried replacing "'" with "" and "’" with "" .. but neither fix it.. i assume i need to convert the encoding? • How to check misspelled email during user registration

  I use an email registration and confirmation in my project (yes, I know about OpenID. In my counry, a main email service lack it). Sometimes users misspell their email addresses. I know about this due to "message could not be delivered" letters in a mailbox. A misspelled address is absolutely correct, because I check it with a regular expression - say, [email protected] intstead of [email protected]. And I do not want to duplicate a email field in a registration form (who likes it?). Request processing routine cannot wait for email delivery - it could take an unpredictable time. So, my script will return to user a confirmation message "An email was sent". And the user will wait for it forever (of cause, not - he/she will turn to an alternative project with a more perfect registration system). Does someone knows how it can be improved (in any programming language)?

  Hi All, I'm having a bit of trouble with regex's (C#, ASP.NET), and I'm pretty sure I'm doing something fundamentally wrong. My task is to bind a dynamically created gridview to a datasource, and then iterate through a column in the grid, looking for the string "A&I". An example of what the data in the cell (in template column) looks like is: Name: John Doe Phone: 555-123-1234 Email: [email protected] Dept: DHS-A&I-MRB Here's the code I'm using to find the string value: foreach(GridViewRow gvrow in gv.Rows) { Match m = Regex.Match(gvrow.Cells[6].Text,"A&I"); if(m.Success) { gvrow.ForeColor = System.Drawing.Color.Red; } } I'm not having any luck with any of these variations: "A&I" "[A][&][I]" But when I strictly user "&", the row does turn red. I am trying to convert this into a DataSet, but when I do ds.ReadXml(xmlFile), then it creates two columns: label and value.   <tag> ????? ? </tag> When I try to get the content of the following code using DOMDocument functions, it returns something like: ÐÐ»ÐµÐºÑ Ðœ I've tried setting DOMDocument encoding to different values (UTF-8, ISO-8859-1), using mb_convert_encoding, iconv and utf8_encode but without success. How can I get "????? ?" instead of "ÐÐ»ÐµÐºÑ Ðœ" ? EDIT: The input is coming from a page loaded with curl. When I output the page content to my browser, the characters are displayed correctly (so I doubt the input is the problem).

• How can i bundle other files when using cx_freeze?

  I'm using Python 2.6 and cx_Freeze 4.1.2 on a Windows system. I've created the setup.py to build my executable and everything works fine. When cx_Freeze runs it movies everything to the build directory. I have some other files that i would like included in my build directory. How can i do this?   I'm having real difficulty with a query involving 3 tables. I need to get the 3 newest users per department grouped by department names. The groups should be sorted by the users.dateadded so the department with the newest activity is first. The users can exist in multiple departments so Im using a lookup table that just contains the userID and deptID. My tables are as follows.   I inherited a mysql database that has a table with columns like this: object_id, property, value It holds data like this: 1,first_name,Jane 1,last_name,Doe 1,age,10 1,color,red 2,first_name,Mike 2,last_name,Smith 2,age,20 2,color,blue 3,first_name,John 3,last_name,Doe 3,age,20 3,color,red ... Basically what I want to do is treat this table as a regular table. How would I get the id numbers (or all properties) of a person who is age 20 sorted by last and than first name? So far I have: SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'age' AND value = '20' union SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'color' AND value = 'red' But I'm not sure how to go about ordering the data.   Following problem: I need to get the position of a record in the table. Let's say I have five record in the table: Name: john doe, ID: 1 Name: jane doe, ID: 2 Name: Frankie Boy, ID: 4 Name: Johnny, ID: 9 Now, "Frankie Boy" is in the third position in the table. But How to get this information from the SQL server? I could count IDs, but they are not reliable, Frankie has the ID 4, but is in the third position because the record with the ID '3' was deleted. Is there a way? I am aware of ROW_RANK but it would be costly, because I need to select basically the whole set first before I can rank row_rank them. I am using MS SQL Server 2008 R2.

The text looks like: 9:30 pm The user did action A. 10:30 pm Welcome, user John Doe. 11:30 am Messaged user John Doe Now, I want to split the string into events. i.e.: 9:30 pm The user did action A. would be one event. I'm using RegEx for this: var split = journals.split(/\d*\d:/); Thing is, the first two characters are getting lost. The split appears like this: 30 pm The user did action A. How do I split so that the split maintains the first two/three characters (ie 9: or 10:) etc? Thanks!

I use a comma to concatenate two fields in [qry_Table2_Combined]. If the left join query uses a table created from the query [qry_Table2_Combined] it works as expected. Why does this left join query not give the same result for a query and a table? And how can i get the right results using a query in the left join?

• Linq to SQL inheritance and Table per Class - approach needed for multiple roles

  I am using L2S and an inheritance model for mapping Persons against certain roles. Guy Burstein's excellent blog post explains how to accomplish this: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/bursteg/archive/2007/10/01/linq-to-sql-inheritance.aspx However, I have a specific case where a Person has multiple roles. For example 'Jane Doe' is a Contact and a Programmer. In this model, she would need two rows in the People table, one as Contact (PersonType = 1) and one as Programmer (PersonType = 3). If she changes her last name, and that update happens in her role as Contact, I would need to change all instances of 'Jane Doe' to reflect the name change everywhere. What sort of best approach (improved data structure) could be used to change last name within all roles? Finally, I am hoping to avoid overriding each general form update events to include all instances, but that may be the only way. Any suggestions or approaches appreciated.
