• Rmagick Fails To Manipulate PNG

  Following the Railscast episode on CarrierWave: I installed ImageMagick on Mountain Lion via homebrew, exported the following path: export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/local/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATH" Symlinked the following: ln -s /usr/local/include/ImageMagick/wand /usr/local/include/wand ln -s /usr/local/include/ImageMagick/magick /usr/local/include/magick And installed rmagick via bundler. In my uploader I have the following: include CarrierWave::RMagick version :thumb do process :resize_to_limit => [85, 85] end Which creates thumbnails just fine, but not for png files. I've tried a handful of png images and it always fails with this error: Failed to manipulate with rmagick, maybe it is not an image? Original Error: no decode delegate for this image format `<path>/public/uploads/tmp/20121022-2133-9885-3333/thumb_cat_vs_internet.png' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/544 jpeg images work just fine. EDIT identify -list format | grep -i png returns nothing, indicating the png decode delegate is probably missing. Now what?

• Tool(s) to lower the friction of programming against Interfaces in Visual Studio C#?

  Hi I am a relatively new user of Visual Studio and I am trying "program against interfaces". I can see that when I create a class I can "Extract Interface" from the Refactor menu but you seem to only get one shot at this. ie. If I add a read only property FullName to my Customer class I would like to be able to right click and update the interface. At the moment I can only create a new interface from the Refactor menu. I want to update the interface I have already created not create new one. So the kind of tool I would be looking for would display check boxes for all valid members of the class with those already in the interface checked. It would also be handy to be able to to create the initial interface file in a different project (in the same solution), and for the tool to keep track of this. Does such a tool / add in / menu item exist (other than Ctrl C / V)? Thanks, John

• http response to GET request - working in FF not Chromium

  For fun I'm trying to write a very simple server in C. When I send this response to Firefox it prints out the body "hello, world" but with Chromium it gives me a Error 100 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED): Unknown error. And i want to improve it into the same format. How can i improve it if i want to edit them on vi? • Ideal Java library for cleaning html, and escaping malformed fragments

  I've got some HTML files that need to be parsed and cleaned, and they occasionally have content with special characters like <, , ", etc. which have not been properly escaped. I have tried running the files through jTidy, but the best I can get it to do is just omit the content it sees as malformed html. Is there a different library that will just escape the malformed fragments instead of omitting them? If not, any recommendations on what library would be easiest to modify? Clarification: Sample input: <p> blah blah <M+1> blah </p> Desired output: <p> blah blah &lt;M+1&gt; blah </p>

  Hello, I am trying to figure out if it is possible to implement a .NET interface, where the interface method has to return something and you are implementing that particular interface method with an asynchronous WCF service? Hopefully you should already see the issue I am encountering. Here is the interface: public interface IDataService { IDataServiceResponse SendDataRequest(); } IDataServiceResponse is supposed to represent a simple container that holds the result of my asynchronous WCF callback. • Why use MySQL over flatfiles?

  A friend and I were debating about whether he should use MySQL or a flatfile database for his website's backend. I told him to go with MySQL because it was structured, held records well, and was consistent. He on the other hand said that he would rather go for speed. Reading files is a lot quicker than connecting to MySQL and it made me wonder whether he was right. For example, why not just create a folder for each table, like so: users/ groups/ posts/, within the folders have the files named by ID (1, 2, 3) and then for the data use a format like so: username: John\npassword: e2fc714c4727ee9395f324cd2e7f331f\nemail: [email protected]? In other words, what are the advantages of MySQL over flatfiles?

• How can I solve this NHibernate Querying in an n-tier architecture?

  I've hit a wall with trying to decouple NHibernate from my services layer. My architecture looks like this: web - services - repositories - nhibernate - db I want to be able to spawn nhibernate queries from my services layer and possibly my web layer without those layers knowing what orm they are dealing with. Currently, I have a find method on all of my repositories that takes in IList<object[]> criteria. This allows me to pass in a list of criteria such as new object() {"Username", usernameVariable}; from anywhere in my architecture. NHibernate takes this in and creates a new Criteria object and adds in the passed in criteria. This works fine for basic searches from my service layer, but I would like to have the ability to pass in a query object that my repository translates into an NHibernate Criteria. Really, I would love to implement something like what is described in this question: Is there value in abstracting nhibernate criterion. I'm just not finding any good resources on how to implement something like this. Is the method described in that question a good approach? If so, could anyone provide some pointers on how to implement such a solution?

• 'button_to' gives me an ugly URL!

  Im trying to get an 'add to cart' button to work. When I use <%= button_to "Add to Cart", :acton = "add_to_cart", :id = @product % and then click the button, I get a URL that puts the action after the ID, like this: 'http://localhost:3000/store/show/1?acton=add_to_cart.' The cart page does not load. What I need is a URL that looks like this: 'http://localhost:3000/store/add_to_cart/1'. I can get that result (and the cart to work) if I don't use 'button_to': <% form_for @product, :url = {:action = "add_to_cart", :id = @product} do |f| % <% end % But, what the heck? Why can't I use 'button_to'?

• Checking if a blob exists in Azure Storage

  Hi, I've got a very simple question (I hope!) - I just want to find out if a blob (with a name I've defined) exists in a particular container. I'll be downloading it if it does exist, and if it doesn't then I'll do something else. I've done some searching on the intertubes and apparently there used to be a function called DoesExist or something similar... but as with so many of the Azure APIs, this no longer seems to be there (or if it is, has a very cleverly disguised name). • Flash AS3 button eventlistener array bug

  Hi there, this is my first time posting a question here. I have an array of 12 buttons on a timeline that when first visiting that part of the timeline, get a CLICK eventlistener added to them using a for loop. All of them work perfectly at that point. When you click one it plays a frame label inside the specific movieClip and reveals a bio on the corresponding person with a close button and removes the CLICK eventlisteners for each button, again using a for loop. The close button plays a closing animation, and then the timeline goes back to the first frame (the one with the 12 buttons on it) and the CLICK eventlisteners are re-added, but now only the first 9 buttons of the array work. There are no output errors and the code to re-add the eventlisteners is exactly the same as the first time that works. I am completely at a loss and am wondering if anyone else has run into this problem. • Trying to understand MVC Models, Advice?

  I am writing my own MVC for the purpose of learning it. I have pretty much everything "down-pat" and my main stuff written besides models due to some trouble understanding them and lack of viable examples. Now, I've been told a model should reprecent a single row, someone told me, your model class should on update/insert and delete rows, anything that involves fetching a single or multiple rows - a "finder" class should be used. So... a) what is a finder class, b) how do I implement it in a useage example, c) Is what I've been told about models correct or is there a better way than "finders"? Advice is much appricated :)
