• Ubuntu 12.04 tilts when trying to open large excel file with libreoffice or matlab

  I have an xlsx-file of size 27.3MB and when I try to open it either in Libreoffice or Matlab the whole system slows down My processor is AMD Sempron(tm) 140 Processor (should be about 2.7Ghz) Memory I have about 1.7GB Any ideas? I opened this file in Windows no problem...of course it took a few seconds to load but Ubuntu freezes with this file completely...smaller files of size 3MB, 5MB etc open just fine... thnx for support =)

• Httpd problem, suspect an attack but not sure

  On one of my servers when I type netstat -n I get a huge output, something like 400 entries for httpd. The bandwidth on the server isn't high, so I'm confused as to what's causing it. I'm suspecting an attack, but not sure. Intermittently, the web server will stop responding. When this happens all other services such as ping, ftp, work just normally. System load is also normal. The only thing that isn't normal I think is the "netstat -n" output. Can you guys take a look and see if there's something I can do? I have APF installed, but not sure what rules I should put into place to mitigate the problem. • Where is all the memory being consumed?

  Hello, I have a Dell R300 Ubuntu 9.10 box with 4GB of memory. All I'm running on there is haproxy, nagios and postfix yet there is ~2.7GB of memory being consumed. I've run ps and I can't get the sums to add up. Could anyone shed any light on where all the memory is being used?   Hi, I've run into some problems with how I've got user home directories set up on our system here. Our server is an XServe, using Open Directory to manage the user accounts. The majority of our workstations are OSX, but there are a few running Linux (Centos 5.3), and, as time goes on, we expect the proportion of Linux workstations to increase (at some point, we expect to move the server side over to Linux too, but for now we're running with what we've already got) To ensure that the Linux and OSX workstations both see user's home directories in the same place, I shared the home directories using NFS. On the server end, the home directories are stored in: /Volumes/data/company_users This is mounted on the workstations to: /mount/company_users This work fine on the Linux workstations, but there is some weirdness under OSX. For the user who is logged in through the GUI, it all works just fine. However, if a user tries to SSH into a machine that they are not the primary user on, they often have no access to their own home directory. It looks as though OSX is trying to do something else to the user home directories mount point when you log in through the GUI.... For example, on this machine (nv001), I (hugh) am logged into the GUI. • Can I subnet a subnet?

  Apologies in advance for the botched terminology. I have read the Server Fault Subnet Wiki but this is more of an ISP question. I currently have a /27 block of public IPs. I use give my router the first address in this pool and then use 1-to-1 NAT for all the servers behind the firewall, so that they each get their own public IP. The router/firewall is currently using (actual addresses removed to protect the guilty): IP Address: XXX.XXX.XXX.164 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.224 Gateway: XXX.XXX.XXX.161 What I would like to do is break out my subnet into two separate /28 subnets. And do this in a way that is transparent to the ISP (i.e., they see me as continuing to operate a single /27). Currently, my topology looks like: ISP | [Router/Firewall] | [Managed Ethernet Switch] / \ \ [Server1] [Server2] [Server3] (etc) Instead, I would like it to look like: ISP | [Switch] / \ [Router1] [Router2] | | | | [S1] [S2] [S3] [S4] (etc) As you can see, this would partition me into two separate networks. I'm struggling with what the correct IP settings would be on Router1 and Router2. Here's what I have right now: Router1 Router2 IP Address: XXX.XXX.XXX.164 XXX.XXX.XXX.180 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.240 255.255.255.240 Gateway: XXX.XXX.XXX.161 XXX.XXX.XXX.161 Note that normally you would expect Router2 to have a gateway of .177, but I'm trying to get them both to use the gateway originally given to me by the ISP. Is subnetting like this in fact possible, or am I completely botching the most basic concepts?

• Mac OS X - User home directories shared via NFS

  I've run into some problems with how I've got user home directories set up on our system here. Our server is an XServe, using Open Directory to manage the user accounts. The majority of our workstations are OS X, but there are a few running Linux (Centos 5.3), and, as time goes on, we expect the proportion of Linux workstations to increase (at some point, we expect to move the server side over to Linux too, but for now we're running with what we've already got) To ensure that the Linux and OS X workstations both see user's home directories in the same place, I shared the home directories using NFS. On the server end, the home directories are stored in: /Volumes/data/company_users This is mounted on the workstations to: /mount/company_users This work fine on the Linux workstations, but there is some weirdness under OS X. For the user who is logged in through the GUI, it all works just fine. However, if a user tries to SSH into a machine that they are not the primary user on, they often have no access to their own home directory. It looks as though OS X is trying to do something else to the user home directories mount point when you log in through the GUI.... For example, on this machine (nv001), I (hugh) am logged into the GUI. Last login: Mon Mar 8 18:17:52 on ttys011 [nv001:~] hugh% ls -al /mount/company_users total 40 drwxrwxrwx 26 hugh wheel 840 27 Jan 19:09 . drwxr-xr-x 6 admin admin 204 19 Dec 18:36 .. drwx------+ 128 hugh staff 4308 27 Feb 23:36 hugh drwx------+ 26 matt staff 840 4 Dec 14:14 matt [nv001:~] hugh% So Matt's home directory is accessible to him. It's causing me all sorts of problems at the moment... The only machine that I can successfully switch users at the moment is the server that the user directories are stored on, where /mount/company_users is actually just a symlink to /Volumes/data/company_users

• NFS4 permission denied when userid does not match (even though idmap is working)

  I have NFS4 setup with idmapd working correctly. ls -l from the client shows the correct user names, even though the user ids differ between the machines. However, when the user ids do not match, I get 'permission denied' errors trying access files, even though ls -l shows the correct username.
