• what is the Web development process efficiency judgment criteria

  I'm working as a web developer and I want to be able to determine if I'm efficient. Does this include the how long it take to accomplish tasks such as: Server side code for the site logic with one language or multiple php,asp,asp.net. Client side code like javascript with jquery for ajax, menus and other interactivity Page layout, html, css (color, fonts (but I have no artistic sense!)) The needs of the site and how it will work (planning) How can i judge how long it will take to complete a website? The site has CMS for adding and editing news, products, articles on the experience of the company. Also, they can edit team work, add Recreational Activities and a logo gallery with compressed psd download, and send messages to cpanel and to email. You are starting from scratch except JQuery and PHPmailer. How can I estimate how long the job will take, and how can I calculate the required time to finish any new projects? I'm so sorry for many scattered questions, but I'm in my first experiment and I want to take benefits from the great experience of those who have it.

• Events Driven Library XNA C#

  Language: C# w/ XNA Framework Relevant and Hopefully Helpful Background Info: I am making a library using the XNA framework for games I make with XNA. The Library has a folder(Namespace) dedication to the GUI. The GUI Controls inherit a base class hooked with the appropriate Interfaces. After a control is made, the programmer can hook the control with a "Frame" or "Module" that will tell the controls when to update and draw with an event. To make a "Frame" or "Module", you would inherit a class with the details coded in. (Kind of how win forms does it.) My reason for doing this is to simplify the process of creating menus with intractable controls. The only way I could think of for making the events for all the controls to function without being class specific would be to typecast a control to an object and typecast it back. (As I have read, this can be terribly inefficient.) Problem: Unfortunately, after I have implemented interfaces into the base classes and changed public delegate void ClickedHandler(BaseControl cntrl); to public delegate void ClickedHandler(Object cntrl, EventArgs e); my game has decreased in performance. This performance could be how I am firing the events, as what happens is the one menu will start fine, but then slowly but surely will freeze up. Every other frame works just fine, I just think it has something to do with the events and... that is why I am asking about them. Question: Is there a better more industry way of dealing with GUI Libraries other then using and implementing Events? Goal: To create a reusable feature rich XNA Control Library implementing performance enhancing standards and so on. Thank-you very much for taking your time to read this. • Java ME SDK 3.0.5 Integrated with NetBeans 7.1.1

  NetBeans 7.1.1 now integrates Java ME SDK 3.0.5, so you do not have to download them separately. Java ME SDK was packaged in NetBeans Mobility Pack, a mobile application development toolkit for NetBeans. Therefore, Java ME SDK is no longer a separate menu on NetBeans. For those who have not downloaded Java ME SDK yet, please simply visit NetBeans website and download the latest version. For those who already have Java ME SDK integrated with NetBeans 7.1 or earlier, and want to update NetBeans IDE to 7.1.1, don't worry. They can co-exist. To use NetBeans plug-ins such as Device Selector, profiler, and Internationalization Resource Manager, you have to install "Java ME SDK Tools" from NetBeans. Here is how. 1.  Go to "Tools - Plug-ins" from NetBeans menu. You can find all the plug-ins you can install into NetBeans. Locate "Java ME SDK Tools" from the list. 2. Follow the instruction to install Java ME SDK Plug-ins. 3. Once completed, you will see new menu options. For example, you can find Device Selector under Tools - Java ME. (If you used old version of Java ME, you will notice that there is not 'Java ME' menu any more. This is because all the sub-menus were integrated into appropriate places in NetBeans.) • Turn-based JRPG battle system architecture resources

  The past months I've been busy programming a 2D JRPG (Japanese-style RPG) in C++ using the SDL library. The exploration mode is more or less done. Now I'm tackling the battle mode. I have been unable to find any resources about how a classic turn-based JRPG battle system is structured. All I find are discussions about damage formula. I've tried googling, searching gamedev.net's message board, and crawling through C++-related questions here on Stack Exchange. I've also tried reading source code of existing open source RPGs, but without a guide of some sort it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I'm not looking for a set of rules like D&D or anything similar. I'm talking purely about code and object structure design. A battle system asks the player for input using menus. Next the battle turn is executed as the heroes and the enemies execute their actions. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

• Cinnamon is broken after upgrade to 13.10

  I see reports of people with Unity broken after upgrading to 13.10. In my case Unity works fine but cinnamon is broken. It opens the startup applications but no window manager, no menus and the keyboad shortcuts won't work. As a consequence I can't even log out or shut down cleanly. • cpufreq-selector, cpufreq-info reporting wrong max speed

  Hi, I've just built a new machine with a Core i5-760 CPU. Max speed is 2.80GHz (turbo mode notwithstanding). I've also done a vanilla install of Ubuntu 10.10. I've added the cpufreq-selector applet to the top panel, and its menus only allow me to select up to 2.39GHz. • wine 1.4 regedit makes screen flicker on 12.04 with dual monitor setup

  I have a dualmonitor setup running dual 23" on 1920x1080 which has the following problem: When running any wine application (for example "wine regedit" from console) the screen flickers and the windows have artifacts like this: Also sometimes taking a screenshot using the print key will make compiz crash (starter and all window bars/menus are gone) when an wine application is started. I don't have the same problems on my notebook which has the same setup. Only difference is the notebook has ATI Graphics and this PC has nvidia. • Impossible to select folders and files with mouse (Ubuntu 12.04)

  First-time post for me here (after being a regular reader for two years though) so thank you all for the quality of replies and help provided. My problem is very simple apparently but a tricky one. I just installed the Ubuntu 12.04(1) along with the Gnome3-shell environment on my new pc desktop Acer Aspire X3995 (see config below). Everything work (more or less) so far (I still have problems of sound and disabled 2-fingers gestures with my screen -- which I will have to deal with xconfig settings I think -- though), but the main problem is that I cannot select files/folders with my USB mouse. When I try to double click on them, nothing happen (sometimes one folder or file is selected but then unselected again). Note that the navigation works perfectly from the USB keyboard and from the touch-screen (I am using a 23" wide touch-screen Acer Monitor T231Hbmid). Also, the mouse works perfectly with other menu navigation, with the only difference that the text of certain menus is selected as if I was holding the left click on them. So I assume the problem is only related to the mouse. Needless to say that the usual basic hardware checks have been performed (unplugging, powered-off, etc.). My level is simply "advanced user", meaning that if you provide me with intelligible input I should find my way, but please don't expect too much technical/specific knowledge... :) Please let me know if you need more information on this bug. • Unwanted Chinese language got set in system settings

  I was discussing on the Ubuntu users list how to type in in Hindi (Indic language) in Libre Office and about a package installation problem. I have made some changes in system settings, following suggestions by some users. However, this morning when I did a reboot I am unable to see English as my default language. My system is showing some Chinese characters which I do not understand. All I wanted was to use Libre Office for a particular document in Hindi. What happened is that even Gmail is opening in Chinese. The system settings folder and others are also opening in Chinese. I am unable to use the system now. I have uploaded the snapshots here: please have a look. Upon a reboot, I was asked to rename all folders. Gmail opening in Chinese This is how menu on my system looks: half English and half Chinese Notice that in the third snapshot the calendar and menu are appearing in Chinese. I want the original US English menus and folder names back. I just wanted to type a document with Lohit Hindi font in Libre Office. I use Ubuntu 11.10. I do not use Unity, only Gnome desktop. I installed gnome-session-fallback a long time back and have been using that ever since. How do I get back to all English submenus and English folder names? I have a US English Keyboard and I use only US English. This thing which is now somehow set is unwanted.

• Booting Ubuntu 13.10 form USB on server with no OS (Dell PowerEdge T110)

  I have a Dell PowerEdge T110 (Xeon 1220v2) server with no OS. From my mac, I was able to save the Ubuntu 13.10 for server iso (x86) and used UNetbootin to save the iso to a USB stick (2GB). I was hoping to boot the server from USB, and all seemed to be going well, BIOS even detected my USB drive when I plugged it in, but for some reason I'm getting a "Missing operating system" error. I checked the USB drive and it appears that UNetbootin put the correct files on it form a cursory glance (although I'm not entirely sure what I should be looking for). Should I be able to boot a server with no OS from a UNetbootin created Ubuntu 13.10 USB? And if so, why might BIOS not find the right files? I had read that there is a USB Emulation setting in BIOS, but I haven't been able to find this in the menus. My understanding is that by default, this is set to on. I might try wiping the USB stick and running UNetbootin again. The USB is formatted to MS-DOS FAT16 (should it be formatted some other way?).

• Why is Desktop Unity using the global application menu?

  It was announced in another question that the desktop version of Unity will keep the global menu by default. Here are the facts: The global menu was introduced into UNE to save vertical screen space because at Netbook resolutions the vertical space is limited. On a modern desktop with a high resolution, there is ample vertical space making this unnecessary On the announcement of UNE global menus, Mark Shuttleworth himself said the following: "There are outstanding questions about the usability of a panel-hosted menu on much larger screens, where the window and the menu could be very far apart." The benefits of a global menu don't seem to carry across to a high-resolution desktop and instead seem to bring draw backs (increased mouse travel, large distance between the menu and its associated window). The other worrying factor is that applications seem to be moving away from having a menu bar, and instead of innovating on this and defining new guidelines for moving away from the menu, we are giving it prime place right at the top of the desktop. If applications continue moving away from the desktop we will have an inconsistent experience concerning where to locate application related options/tools depending on which app you are using (e.g. Chrome). Finally, the current global menu bar implementation doesn't work for all apps, and doesn't even work for all apps in the default install. This means that the default desktop implementation will be inconsistent. So, there are a bunch of reasons why moving to a global menu is a bad idea, so we need some pretty convincing arguments for why it is a good idea. What are the reasons for the global menu implementation in the desktop version of Unity?

• HP Pavilion 15 with AMD dual graphics - Ubuntu live environment not starting

  I've had this laptop for about a day now and have decided to try Ubuntu on it and determine if I want to install it. I created a USB, it booted (Secure Boot was on, I tried with Secure Boot off to no effect), and then the problem occurred. The screen turned off for a second, turned back on to a black screen, shut off again and turned back on with a dialogue box telling me that the system had to use low-graphics mode. I clicked OK, selected low-graphics mode from the menu and clicked OK. The screen switched to the boot messages and did not go any further than this. Ctrl+Alt+DEL started rebooting the laptop though. I tried booting again, but this time I edited the boot options in GRUB to add nomodeset. This time, the laptop only booted to a black screen. Ctrl+Alt+F2 took me to a prompt, I tried startx from there, but X didn't start, complaining that it wanted kernel mode setting back. I can not seem to find any option to disable one graphics chip or the other in the UEFI setup menus. Laptop : HP Pavilion 15-E004AU. The CPU : AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics The graphics chip : AMD Radeon HD 7520G + 8670M Dual Graphics. The Ubuntu version : 13.10, 64 bit. Thanks. EDIT: I tried 12.04.3 LTS, it managed to bring the desktop up. There are severe graphics glitches after about two minutes though.

  For a site... o whose overall look-and-feel is generated by one php page ("index.php"). o in which "index.php" provides for all pages served the following required components: The DOCTYPE, opening html tag, the head section, the opening body tag, the end-body tag, and end-html tag. o which uses computed hierarchical navigation menus within "index.php" to offer visitors access to the site content. o in which all content is stored in individual files that contain "headerless html". (The DOCTYPE, etc. etc. being being provided by "index.php" as described above.) Q1: what term best describes this architecture? I'm seeking a concise descriptor that is useful in conversation and definitive as a search term, in whole-web searches, and searching here on Pro Webmasters. Q2: what term best describes the individual content files? Same general goals for the descriptor as above. As you see above, I couldn't avoid using the term "headerless html", my best choice. But this term does not seem to be in general use. I've found some people use this term to describe such as my content files, but others use it quite differently.

• Synaptics touchpad problem when disabling it and then enabling it

  My girlfriend has an HP dv6000. In ubuntu 10.10 32bit i use the synaptic on it and all is good but when i disable it and enable it the problem starts. when i press the disable button in the synaptics touchpad it disables the mouse AND the keyboard. After enabled the Keyboard keys and Mouse clicks do not work. If i click on the panel below, for example the Applications, Places or System buttons the focus gets stuck there forever. I can open nautilus by clicking on it but i can not use the menus, the ALT+F2 function, see the wireless connections, lower the sound through the panel, etc.. Here comes the weird part. If i press CTRL+ALT+F1 (or any other tty for that matter) and then come back to CTRL+ALT+F7 where the gui is everything works perfect again. This started about a week ago but she told me right now. i checked dmesg which is for sometime now throwing some warnings about Skipping EDID probe do to cached edid but for what i could find out this did not create the problem in the start. NOTE: I do not need to login when i do CTRL+ALT+F1 i just need to change to another tty then come back to F7. What could be causing this problem?

• State changes in entities or components

  I'm having some trouble figuring how to deal with state management in my entities. I don't have trouble with Game state management, like pause and menus, since these are not handled as an entity component system; just with state in entities/components. Drawing from Orcs Must Die as an example, I have my MainCharacter and Trap entities which only have their components like PositionComponent, RenderComponent, PhysicsComponent. On each update the Entity will call update on its components. I also have a generic EventManager with listeners for different event types. Now I need to be able to place the traps: first select the trap and trap position then place the trap. When placing a trap it should appear in front of the MainCharacter, rendered in a different way and following it around. When placed it should just respond to collisions and be rendered in the normal way. How is this usually handled in component based systems? (This example is specific but can help figure out the general way to deal with entities states.)

• Massive Xubuntu desktop malfunction

  I'm using Xubuntu 11.04. Before everything worked fine, but when booting today the following happened: 1) Window focus does not leave the first-opened program. This means that if I keep Firefox open, and open a terminal, window focus will never be transferred to the terminal. (EDIT: if I open a terminal first, and then open Firefox, Firefox steals focus) 2) Window menus have disappeared. The maximize, minimize, etc., buttons and menu are gone. 3) In Xfce Settings Manager, the "Window Manager" settings window is empty. There is just a gray screen there, so I cannot modify any window settings. 4) The keyboard shortcuts I had previously defined using the Settings Manager do no longer work. Further, ALT-TAB no longer works for cycling between windows. 5) The mouse pointer does not show when I first log in. I have to log out and log in again (with an invisible pointer) before the mouse shows itself. EDIT: 6) I cannot resize or move the Thunderbird window, but I can move the Firefox window What can I do to troubleshoot this?

• Ubuntu 12.04 desktop, VNC viewer not refreshing screen

  I've had this issues across multiple machines and multiple versions of Ubuntu desktop (all 10.04 or later). Usually it happens with an old laptop I've put Ubuntu on but now it's happening on my primary dev machine (a quad-core PC recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 desktop). The problem is this - I can connect to the machine and login with the password, the initial screen looks fine but never refreshes. I can see the monitor for the machine across the room and can see the mouse move and the menus pop up but the image of the screen on the PC in front me running the VNC viewer never updates. So the mouse and keyboard commands are working. Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop Ultra VNC Viewer (also seen with RealVNC's free VNC viewer) Desktop Sharing Static IP on eth0; Dynamic ID on eth1 I think it is an Ubuntu config issue because this PC used to work just fine with 9.04, 10.04, and 11.10 (over the past couple of years). I've also had a couple of laptops that used to have this issue with older Ubuntu's but don't with 12.04. Additional info: The Win7 PC I'm trying to use to control the Ubuntu PC is connected via 2 DLink 8-port gigabit routers. The Ubuntu laptop I usually control via VNC is typically only connected to the network via wireless. The screen refresh is choppy but usable. I've repeated the issue on a Win7 laptop which was connected via ethernet and wireless.

• Visual Studio 2012 first impressions...no Macros!

  Yesterday I installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 for the first time (all 8.5GB) and after 20 years of (mostly) happy times using VS they have removed Macros, one of the most handy features.The first thing I wanted to do when I upgraded my VS2010 project was to add a #elseif block to each file. This would usually be simple case of find in files of the previous #elseif and then Ctrl+Shift+R to record a macro which would be: F8 (to select the next file from find list), F3 (to find the correct position in file), Ctrl+V to paste the new code. Then all I would need to do is keep Ctrl+Shift+P (Play Macro) pressed until all the files were processed.But alas Ctrl+Shift+R does nothing! I won’t say that I use Macros every day but it was a very useful feature.To continue my moaning a little more, I also don't like the bland interface. This has been well documented by others, but now I have used it myself, I find it difficult to tell one grey area of screen from another and the lack of colour makes the icons unclear.I also don't see why the menus now need to SHOUT in capital letters?On the plus side, they have now added the ability to see WPF properties in the debugger...a bit of an oversight in Visual Studio 2010. Oh, but you still can't edit and continue on files that contain templated code.Whilst Visual Studio 2012 is not a complete disaster like Windows 8 (why develop a desk top OS to be the same as a Smart device OS), it does not float my boat.Rant over.#

• Basic is Best

  Fellow foodies will recognize the recent movement towards "farm-to-table" restaurants. These venues attempt to simplify their menus and source ingredients as close to the source as possible. I had the opportunity to dine at such a restaurant the other evening. I was gushing about the appetizer to my server when she described the preparation for the item and then punctuated her comments with "basic is best". I reminded my fellow enterprise architect diners there was an architecture lesson in that statement. They rolled their eyes and chuckled. But they also knew I was right. I'm reminded of Frederick Brooks' book The Mythical Man Month and his latest The Design of Design. The former must read book talks about complexity. But he refrains from damning all complexity. The world we live in and enterprises we strive to transform with enterprise architecture are complicated organisms, much like the human body. But sometimes a simple solution is the best approach. Fewer applications (think: portfolio rationalization). Fewer components. Fewer lines of code. Whatever level of abstraction you are working at, less is more. I'm reminded of the enterprise architecture principle "Control Technical Diversity". At one firm I created pithy catch phrases for each principles. I named this one "Less is More". But perhaps another variation is what my server said the other night, "Basic is Best".

• How should I structure moving from overworld to menu system / combat?

  I'm making a text-based "Arena" game where the player is the owner of 5 creatures that battle other teams for loot, experience and glory. The game is very simple, using Python and a curses emulator. I have a static ASCII map of an "overworld" of sorts. My character, represented by a glyph, can move about this static map. There are locations all over the map that the character can visit, that break down into two types: 1) Towns, which are a series of menus that will allow the player to buy equipment for his team, hire new recruits or do other things. 2) Arenas, where the player's team will have a "battle" interface with actions he can perform, messages about the fight, etc. Maybe later, an ASCII representation of the fight but for now, just screens of information with action prompts. My main problem is what kind of design or structure I should use to implement this? Right now, the game goes through a master loop which waits for keyboard input and then moves the player about the screen. My current thinking is this: 1) Upon keyboard input, the Player coordinates are checked against a list of Location objects and if the Player coords match the Location coords then... 2) ??? I'm not sure if I should then call a seperate function to initiate a "menu" or "combat" mode. Or should I create some kind of new GameMode object that contains a method itself for drawing the screen, printing the necessary info? How do I pass my player's team data into this object? My main concern is passing around the program flow into all these objects. Should I be calling straight functions for different parts of my game, and objects to represent "things" within my game? I was reading about the MVC pattern and how this kind of problem might benefit - decouple the GUI from the game logic and user input but I have no idea how this applies to my game.
