  • The Spotlight is on You

    - by Claudia McDonald
    On the field or off the field, in ballet slippers or singing your heart out on stage, offering a stellar performance every time is key to holding the attention of your audience and having them come back hungry for more. Similarly, showing up to a new business meeting wearing pink tights and a tutu might be one way to holding the attention of your customer, but offering them an unmatched and ground-breaking software solution certainly will get their attention! Simply put, the Oracle Exastack program enables both ISV's and OEM's to rapidly build and deliver faster, more reliable applications. It comes as no surprise that the success of the Oracle Exastack program is centered on establishing Oracle Exadata Database Machine and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud as the highest performance, lowest cost platforms available in the industry today.  But here is where the real standing-ovation-worthy facts come in. The Oracle Exadata Database Machine is the only database machine that provides extreme performance for both data warehousing and online transaction processing (OLTP) workloads, making it the ideal platform for consolidating onto private clouds. Whereas the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud is an engineered hardware and software system tested and tuned by Oracle to provide the best foundation for cloud computing, while allowing Java applications, Oracle Applications and other enterprise applications to run with extreme performance. – And the crowd goes wild, ladies and gentlemen! In just four months alone, our partners have already achieved over 150 Oracle Exastack Ready milestones for Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux, Oracle Database and Oracle WebLogic Server.  As Judson has said, “With the Oracle Exastack program, Oracle is helping partners test, tune and optimize their applications to deliver optimal performance and reliability, accelerating innovation and delivering superior value to customers." And get this, not only are their applications running faster and more efficiently, they are actually being delivered at a lower cost to customers than ever before – extreme performance well deserving of 3 consecutive arabesques! If you haven’t already, check out what some of our partners are saying about the Oracle Exastack program in this video, and find out all that is available to you today. By participating in the Oracle Exastack program, partners now have the ability to achieve Oracle Exadata Optimized, Oracle Exalogic Optimized, Oracle Exadata Ready and Oracle Exalogic Ready status for their solutions. New Oracle Exastack labs, provide OPN members with access to Oracle technical resources, on-premise facilities and remote lab environments. With Oracle Exastack Optimized, partners experience faster and more reliable applications to run on the Oracle Exadata Database Machine, as well as the long awaited Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud. Savvy OPN members are leveraging the Oracle Exastack Optimized program toward their advancement to Platinum or Diamond level in OPN. Partners are achieving Oracle Exadata Ready and Oracle Exalogic Ready giving them a competitive advantage and signaling to customers that their applications readily support Oracle Exadata Database Machine or Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud to deliver extreme performance. • PASS summit 2013. We do not remember days. We remember moments.

    - by Maria Zakourdaev
      "Business or pleasure?" barked the security officer in the Charlotte International Airport. "I’m not sure, sir," I whimpered, immediately losing all courage. "I'm here for the database technologies summit called PASS”. "Sounds boring. Definitely a business trip." Boring?! He couldn’t have been more wrong. If he only knew about the countless meetings throughout the year where I waved my hands at my great boss and explained again and again how fantastic this summit is and how much I learned last year. One by one, the drops of water began eating away at the stone. He finally approved of my trip just to stop me from torturing him. Time moves as slow as a turtle when you are waiting for something. Time runs as fast as a cheetah when you are there. PASS has come...and passed. It’s been an amazing week. Enormous sqlenergy has filled the city, filled the convention center and the surrounding pubs and restaurants. There were awesome speakers, great content, and the chance to meet most inspiring database professionals from all over the world. Some sessions were unforgettable. Imagine a fully packed room with more than 500 people in awed silence, catching each and every one of Paul Randall's words. His tremendous energy and deep knowledge were truly thrilling. No words can describe Rob Farley's unique presentation style, captivating and engaging the audience. When the precious session minutes were over, I could tell that the many random puzzle pieces of information that his listeners knew had been suddenly combined into a clear, cohesive picture. I was amazed as always by Paul White's great sense of humor and his phenomenal ability to explain complicated concepts in a simple way. The keynote by the brilliant Dr. DeWitt from Microsoft in front of the full summit audience of 5000 deeply listening people was genuinely breathtaking. The entire conference throughout offered excellent speakers who inspired me to absorb the knowledge and use it when I got home. To my great surprise, I found that there are other people in this world who like replication as much I do. During the Birds of a Feather Luncheon, SQL Server MVP Ted Krueger was writing a script for replicating the food to other tables. I learned many things at PASS, and not all of them were about SQL. After three summits, this time I finally got the knack of networking. I actually went up and spoke to people, and believe me, that was not easy for an introvert. But this is what the summit is all about. Sqlpeople. They are the ones who make it such an exciting experience. I will be looking forward to the next year. Till then I have my notes and new ideas. How long was the summit? Thousands of unforgettable moments.

  • Wide gap in my resume as a Java developer. What are must-have skills required to get hired those days? [closed]

    - by OnlineAlien
    For some legal reasons I haven't worked for anybody for the last 12 years. I am a java web developer or at least I am thinking so. For this period I have been working on my project- some sort of business network - and I did few small jobs, so right now I feel I am far behind in terms of my skills and the skills needed today. I lingered too long on Struts and Hibernate and thought that could the job for my project. I need to get a job, right now, so I am spending most of my time brushing my skills. My question is: What are the current necessary skills that could convince employers to hire me regardless of my past employment or the lack of it. Right now I am on AspectJ, IoC and Spring Thanks

  • Getting segmentaion fault after destructor

    - by therealsquiggy
    I'm making a small file reading and data validation program as part of my TAFE (a tertiary college) course, This includes checking and validating dates. I decided that it would be best done with a seperate class, rather than integrating it into my main driver class. The problem is that I'm getting a segmentation fault(core dumped) after my test program runs. Near as I can tell, the error occurs when the program terminates, popping up after the destructor is called. So far I have had no luck finding the cause of this fault, and was hoping that some enlightened soul might show me the error of my ways. date.h #ifndef DATE_H #define DATE_H #include <string> using std::string; #include <sstream> using std::stringstream; #include <cstdlib> using std::exit; #include <iostream> using std::cout; using std::endl; class date { public: explicit date(); ~date(); bool before(string dateIn1, string dateIn2); int yearsBetween(string dateIn1, string dateIn2); bool isValid(string dateIn); bool getDate(int date[], string dateIn); bool isLeapYear(int year); private: int days[]; }; #endif date.cpp #include "date.h" date::date() { days[0] = 31; days[1] = 28; days[2] = 31; days[3] = 30; days[4] = 31; days[5] = 30; days[6] = 31; days[7] = 31; days[8] = 30; days[9] = 31; days[10] = 30; days[11] = 31; } bool date::before(string dateIn1, string dateIn2) { int date1[3]; int date2[3]; getDate(date1, dateIn1); getDate(date2, dateIn2); if (date1[2] < date2[2]) { return true; } else if (date1[1] < date2[1]) { return true; } else if (date1[0] < date2[0]) { return true; } return false; } date::~date() { cout << "this is for testing only, plox delete\n"; } int date::yearsBetween(string dateIn1, string dateIn2) { int date1[3]; int date2[3]; getDate(date1, dateIn1); getDate(date2, dateIn2); int years = date2[2] - date1[2]; if (date1[1] > date2[1]) { years--; } if ((date1[1] == date2[1]) && (date1[0] > date2[1])) { years--; } return years; } bool date::isValid(string dateIn) { int date[3]; if (getDate(date, dateIn)) { if (date[1] <= 12) { int extraDay = 0; if (isLeapYear(date[2])) { extraDay++; } if ((date[0] + extraDay) <= days[date[1] - 1]) { return true; } } } else { return false; } } bool date::getDate(int date[], string dateIn) { string part1, part2, part3; size_t whereIs, lastFound; whereIs = dateIn.find("/"); part1 = dateIn.substr(0, whereIs); lastFound = whereIs + 1; whereIs = dateIn.find("/", lastFound); part2 = dateIn.substr(lastFound, whereIs - lastFound); lastFound = whereIs + 1; part3 = dateIn.substr(lastFound, 4); stringstream p1(part1); stringstream p2(part2); stringstream p3(part3); if (p1 >> date[0]) { if (p2>>date[1]) { return (p3>>date[2]); } else { return false; } return false; } } bool date::isLeapYear(int year) { return ((year % 4) == 0); } and Finally, the test program #include <iostream> using std::cout; using std::endl; #include "date.h" int main() { date d; cout << "1/1/1988 before 3/5/1990 [" << d.before("1/1/1988", "3/5/1990") << "]\n1/1/1988 before 1/1/1970 [" << d.before("a/a/1988", "1/1/1970") <<"]\n"; cout << "years between 1/1/1988 and 1/1/1998 [" << d.yearsBetween("1/1/1988", "1/1/1998") << "]\n"; cout << "is 1/1/1988 valid [" << d.isValid("1/1/1988") << "]\n" << "is 2/13/1988 valid [" << d.isValid("2/13/1988") << "]\n" << "is 32/12/1988 valid [" << d.isValid("32/12/1988") << "]\n"; cout << "blerg\n"; } I've left in some extraneous cout statements, which I've been using to try and locate the error. So far I have had no luck finding the cause of this fault, and was hoping that some enlightened soul might show me the error of my ways. date.h #ifndef DATE_H #define DATE_H #include <string> using std::string; #include <sstream> using std::stringstream; #include <cstdlib> using std::exit; #include <iostream> using std::cout; using std::endl; class date { public: explicit date(); ~date(); bool before(string dateIn1, string dateIn2); int yearsBetween(string dateIn1, string dateIn2); bool isValid(string dateIn); bool getDate(int date[], string dateIn); bool isLeapYear(int year); private: int days[]; }; #endif date.cpp #include "date.h" date::date() { days[0] = 31; days[1] = 28; days[2] = 31; days[3] = 30; days[4] = 31; days[5] = 30; days[6] = 31; days[7] = 31; days[8] = 30; days[9] = 31; days[10] = 30; days[11] = 31; } bool date::before(string dateIn1, string dateIn2) { int date1[3]; int date2[3]; getDate(date1, dateIn1); getDate(date2, dateIn2); if (date1[2] < date2[2]) { return true; } else if (date1[1] < date2[1]) { return true; } else if (date1[0] < date2[0]) { return true; } return false; } date::~date() { cout << "this is for testing only, plox delete\n"; } int date::yearsBetween(string dateIn1, string dateIn2) { int date1[3]; int date2[3]; getDate(date1, dateIn1); getDate(date2, dateIn2); int years = date2[2] - date1[2]; if (date1[1] > date2[1]) { years--; } if ((date1[1] == date2[1]) && (date1[0] > date2[1])) { years--; } return years; } bool date::isValid(string dateIn) { int date[3]; if (getDate(date, dateIn)) { if (date[1] <= 12) { int extraDay = 0; if (isLeapYear(date[2])) { extraDay++; } if ((date[0] + extraDay) <= days[date[1] - 1]) { return true; } } } else { return false; } } bool date::getDate(int date[], string dateIn) { string part1, part2, part3; size_t whereIs, lastFound; whereIs = dateIn.find("/"); part1 = dateIn.substr(0, whereIs); lastFound = whereIs + 1; whereIs = dateIn.find("/", lastFound); part2 = dateIn.substr(lastFound, whereIs - lastFound); lastFound = whereIs + 1; part3 = dateIn.substr(lastFound, 4); stringstream p1(part1); stringstream p2(part2); stringstream p3(part3); if (p1 >> date[0]) { if (p2>>date[1]) { return (p3>>date[2]); } else { return false; } return false; } } bool date::isLeapYear(int year) { return ((year % 4) == 0); } and Finally, the test program #include <iostream> using std::cout; using std::endl; #include "date.h" int main() { date d; cout << "1/1/1988 before 3/5/1990 [" << d.before("1/1/1988", "3/5/1990") << "]\n1/1/1988 before 1/1/1970 [" << d.before("a/a/1988", "1/1/1970") <<"]\n"; cout << "years between 1/1/1988 and 1/1/1998 [" << d.yearsBetween("1/1/1988", "1/1/1998") << "]\n"; cout << "is 1/1/1988 valid [" << d.isValid("1/1/1988") << "]\n" << "is 2/13/1988 valid [" << d.isValid("2/13/1988") << "]\n" << "is 32/12/1988 valid [" << d.isValid("32/12/1988") << "]\n"; cout << "blerg\n"; } I've left in some extraneous cout statements, which I've been using to try and locate the error. I thank you in advance.

  • ASP MVC 2: Error with dropdownlist on POST

    - by wh0emPah
    Okay i'm new to asp mvc2 and i'm experiencing some problems with the htmlhelper called Html.dropdownlistfor(); I want to present the user a list of days in the week. And i want the selected item to be bound to my model. I have created this little class to generate a list of days + a short notation which i will use to store it in the database. public static class days { public static List<Day> getDayList() { List<Day> daylist = new List<Day>(); daylist.Add(new Day("Monday", "MO")); daylist.Add(new Day("Tuesday", "TU")); // I left the other days out return daylist; } public class Dag{ public string DayName{ get; set; } public string DayShortName { get; set; } public Dag(string name, string shortname) { this.DayName= name; this.DayShortName = shortname; } } } I really have now idea if this is the correct way to do it Then i putted this in my controller: SelectList _list = new SelectList(Days.getDayList(), "DayShortName", "DayName"); ViewData["days"] = _list; return View(""); I have this line in my model public string ChosenDay { get; set; } And this in my view to display the list: <div class="editor-field"> <%: Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.ChosenDay, ViewData["days"] as SelectList, "--choose Day--")%> </div> Now this all works perfect. On the first visit, But then when i'm doing a [HttpPost] Which looks like the following: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Registreer(EventRegistreerViewModel model) { // I removed some unrelated code here // The code below executes when modelstate.isvalid == false SelectList _list = new SelectList(Days.getDayList(), "DayShortName", "DayName"); ViewData["days"] = _list; return View(model); } Then i will have the following exception thrown: The ViewData item that has the key 'ChosenDay' is of type 'System.String' but must be of type 'IEnumerable<SelectListItem>'. This errors gets thrown at the line in my view where i display the dropdown list. I really have no idea how to solve this and tried several solutions i found online. but none of them really worked. Ty in advance!
