  • Run preseed commands as specific user / switching users

    Beside the usual setup where I create a normal user foo, I want to run a few d-i preseed/late_command commands as that foo user. My initial thought was to simply call those commands with sudo, e.g: d-i preseed/late_command in-target echo "<pwd>" | sudo -Si <command>. This works for some sort of commands. However the problem is that some of the commands load up shell scripts which require to not be run with sudo. Issuing a su -c "<command>" would be an alternative, but su does not offer the possibility to read the password from stdin. Is it safe to jump around between the users using su (And if yes, how do I provide the stdin? and does it work or just result in a su: must be run from a terminal) or would this cause issues?

  • Where to run Java and PHP code continuously

    I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum for a question like this, but you have to start asking questions somewhere to get anywhere :) The question is pretty simple: I need a server where I can run Java and PHP scripts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I need to be able to access this server via SSH, and I need to be able to retrieve the data generated by scripts using SCP. Also, I need to be able to run 10-20 scripts simultaneously. What is the name of the thing I should be looking for? Is it a dedicated server? I'm confused for 2 reasons: 1) because there seem to be all kinds of servers out there; 2) because most companies advertising dedicated servers seem to be aiming them at people who want to host websites. But I don't want to host a website; I just want to run my code.

  • Cannot run a JUnit test case containing threads from Eclipse

    I am running JUnit test case from Eclipse 3.4.1 . This test case creates a class which starts a thread to do some stuff. When the test method ends it seems that Eclipse is forcibly shutting down the thread. If I run the same test from the command line, then the thread runs properly. Somehow I do not remember running into such problems with Eclipse before. Is this something that was always present in Eclipse or did they add it in 3.4.x ? Here is an example: When I run this test from Eclipse, I get a few printts of the cnt (till about 1800) and then the test case is terminated utomatically. I could of course set up a cron job to run the script every five minutes, or run the script manually every time after tweeting, but neither of those is instant — and that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Is it possible to use the Twitter API to run a script / get a URL every time my timeline is updated?

    I'm new to PHP, trying to get multiple tests to run at once. I was hoping to just run all tests in a directory, which seemed to work awhile (instead of using a phpunit.xml). I am able to run a test individually like so: phpunit FirstUnitTest sites\all\modules\experiment\unit-tests\FirstUnitTest.lua But when I try to run the same test by directory, its not found. I try using: phpunit sites\all\modules\experiment\unit-tests Does anyone know why this may not work?

Update I used SBT Assembly to build a fat jar of this project and specified logtest.LoggerTest to be the main class.     I have a perl script which is compiled using pp, to be run as a windows service on windows 7 machines. I looked at the thread http://www.perlmonks.org/index.pl?node%5Fid=230377 but of little use because most of them weren't clear and the solutions suggested in that were to create executables and not actually for running as a windows 7 service. I tried putting my compiled exe in the scheduled tasks of windows but I think its not able to run for some reason. How do I debug this?

    Hi, We have a Windows 2008 cluster with several SQL 2008 instance. We would like to run a script that modifies 4 registry keys prior to the startup of SQL. I do not know if there is a way to have a script run through Windows 2008 clustering that does that. I have a VBS script to do it and tried to add a Generic Script to an existing cluster group, but it failed saying it could not be registered. Any ideas?

    I have recently installed Visio 2010 Premium 64 bit and although it installed fine, when i try to run it i get c:\windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft.vc90.mfc_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4148_none_04480933ab2137b1\mfc90u.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support I've uninstalled and reinstalled the application but it just won't work. Any clues/suggestions? Office 2010 which i installed prior is working fine.

I've run the following command: sudo aptitude install imagemagick Now whenever I try to run 'display' from the command line, I get an error saying display: delegate library support not built-in `' (X11) @ display.c/DisplayImageCommand/1888. I can certainly include more details if asked, but at the moment I'm not sure what else to include. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.

    Is there a way to add a new App Path (for adding commands to Start-Run) without needing Admin? With admin, you can add an App Path to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths. I tried adding one under HKCU with no effect. I've added a new (user-writable) location to my user's PATH environment variable which lets me launch things from Start-Run, but the nerd in me still wants to know about the App Paths.

    I tried to migrate a 5 year old ruby on rails application onto a new server with Ubuntu 8.04, Apache 2 and MySQL 5. The application failed to run. When I looked in the error logs, I noticed Errno::ENOENT (No such file or directory - /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock) I looked around my new server but can't find a mysqld.sock file. How can I fix this problem?

    How do I run a script when a drive is mounted under OSX ? My usecase is that I would like to automatically copy images from my USB memory/harddrive when it is inserted in my USB card reader, and when a DVD or CD is inserted I would like to copy it for storage in my media center. I've tried using Marcopolo but from what I can see it can only detect the presence of a certain USB device, not the presence of specific harddrive.   • Run Flyff without elevating user to Admin or requiring Admin Password

    Bottom Line: I need to set up one game on my little sister's laptop to run without requiring an admin password/account. Its the only game that seems to insist on it... so far. Detailed Version: I set up my 14-year-old sister as a regular user on her Windows 7 Home Premium laptop, and almost everything has been fine - until she found a new game (Flyff) that doesn't seem to want to run without an Admin Password (or being logged in as an Admin). For what should be obvious reasons, I'm not going to make her an Admin. or give her the Admin password (which she swears she'll only use to run this game... anyone else buying that? Bueller?) Also, the parents aren't admins on her laptop (they are on their own, but that's another discussion for another day) and I'm not going to set them up as one as I know from past experience that the 3rd time my sister asks them to put in their password, they'll just tell her what it is - at which point I might as well as have just set her up as an admin from the outset. This is a Win7 Home Premium (64-bit, but I doubt that makes a difference) laptop, so using GPEdit is out. I also tried an answer provided in a related (but less specific) question. The app has read/write permissions for its folder in Program Files (x86), yet that doesn't seem to make a difference. I have not yet dug through the registry as mentioned in another answer to the aforementioned question. Just to be thorough, I have checked the "Run as Admin" option on the shortcut's properties to no avail. Am I missing something? Addendum 2010-11-11: Re-Checked permissions as per Joel's answer, and it didn't make a difference. Followed Jane T's suggestion (and Aeo's second) and created a "Games" folder outside Program Files, installing the game there - and making sure regular users had all the permissions they would need. No joy. After the latter of the above two changes, it occurred to me that it may be a UAC issue, so for kicks I turned off UAC - still the damn message. Last item noted: could it be a result of the publisher not being specified/verified? I've been taking a closer look at the error message and it occurred to me that the missing/unverified publisher info could have been the problem all along... Correct me if I'm wrong, but if that's the case, that means there's nothing I can do short of giving her some sort of Admin privileges (i.e. elevating her account, or giving her the password to a separate Admin account) or giving Mom an Admin account.
