  • C++ Long switch statement or look up with a map?

    - by Rachel
In my C++ application, I have some values that act as codes to represent other values. To translate the codes, I've been debating between using a switch statement or an stl map. The switch would look something like this: int code; int value; switch(code) { case 1: value = 10; break; case 2: value = 15; break; } The map would be an stl::map<int, int> and translation would be a simple lookup with the code used as the key value. Which one is better/more efficient/cleaner/accepted? Why?

  • Is it bad practice to change state inside of an if statement?

    - by Benjamin
I wrote some code that looks similar to the following: String SKIP_FIRST = "foo"; String SKIP_SECOND = "foo/bar"; int skipFooBarIndex(String[] list){ int index; if (list.length >= (index = 1) && list[0].equals(SKIP_FIRST) || list.length >= (index = 2) && (list[0] + "/" + list[1]).equals(SKIP_SECOND)){ return index; } return 0; } String[] myArray = "foo/bar/apples/peaches/cherries".split("/"); print(skipFooBarIndex(myArray); This changes state inside of the if statement by assigning index. However, my coworkers disliked this very much. Is this a harmful practice? Is there any reason to do it?

  • Why only the constant expression can be used as case expression in Switch statement?

    - by sinec
Hi, what is bothering me is that I can't found an info regarding the question from the title. I found that assembly form the Switch-case statement is compiled into bunch of (MS VC 2008 compiler) cmp and je calls: 0041250C mov eax, dword ptr [i] 0041250F mov dword ptr [ebp-100h],eax 00412515 cmp dword ptr [ebp-100h],1 0041251C je wmain+52h (412532h) 0041251E cmp dword ptr [ebp-100h],2 00412525 je wmain+5Bh (41253Bh) 00412527 cmp dword ptr [ebp-100h],3 0041252E je wmain+64h (412544h) 00412530 jmp wmain+6Bh (41254Bh) where for above code will in case that if condition (i) is equal to 2, jump to address 41253Bh and do execution form there (at 41253Bh starts the code for 'case 2:' block) What I don't understand is why in case that, for instance, function is used as 'case expression', why first function couldn't be evaluated and then its result compared with the condition? Am I missing something? Thank you in advance

  • Is it a good idea to define a variable in a local block for a case of a switch statement?

    - by Paperflyer
I have a rather long switch-case statement. Some of the cases are really short and trivial. A few are longer and need some variables that are never used anywhere else, like this: switch (action) { case kSimpleAction: // Do something simple break; case kComplexAction: { int specialVariable = 5; // Do something complex with specialVariable } break; } The alternative would be to declare that variable before going into the switch like this: int specialVariable = 5; switch (action) { case kSimpleAction: // Do something simple break; case kComplexAction: // Do something complex with specialVariable break; } This can get rather confusing since it is not clear to which case the variable belongs and it uses some unnecessary memory. However, I have never seen this usage anywhere else. Do you think it is a good idea to declare variables locally in a block for a single case?

  • Why "constructor-way" of declaring variable in "for-loop" allowed but in "if-statement" not allowed?

    - by PiotrNycz
    Consider this simple example: /*1*/ int main() { /*2*/ for (int i(7); i;){break;} /*3*/ if (int i(7)) {} /*4*/ } Why line-2 compiles just fine, whilst line-3 gives the error? This is little strange to me why if-statement is in this aspect treated worse than for-loop? If this is compiler specific - I tested with gcc-4.5.1: prog.cpp: In function 'int main()': prog.cpp:3:7: error: expected primary-expression before 'int' prog.cpp:3:7: error: expected ')' before 'int' I was inspired by this question [UPDATE] I know this compiles just fine: /*1*/ int main() { /*2*/ for (int i = 7; i;){break;} /*3*/ if (int i = 7) {} /*4*/ }

  • How to write a contains statement to match a member of a class?

    - by afuzzyllama
If I have the following structure: Public Class UserData Public ID As String Public Name As String End Class How can I select it in a conditional like this? Dim myUsers As New List(Of UserData) If myUsers.Contains(.ID = "1") = True Then ... I know that myUsers.Contains(.ID = "1") is totally wrong, but I am curious how to do something like that? Is it possible? Is this a job for LINQ?

  • SQL SERVER – Select Columns from Stored Procedure Resultset

    - by Pinal Dave
It is fun to go back to basics often. Here is the one classic question: “How to select columns from Stored Procedure Resultset?” Though Stored Procedure has been introduced many years ago, the question about retrieving columns from Stored Procedure is still very popular with beginners. Let us see the solution in quick steps. First we will create a sample stored procedure. CREATE PROCEDURE SampleSP AS SELECT 1 AS Col1, 2 AS Col2 UNION SELECT 11, 22 GO Now we will create a table where we will temporarily store the result set of stored procedures. We will be using INSERT INTO and EXEC command to retrieve the values and insert into temporary table. CREATE TABLE #TempTable (Col1 INT, Col2 INT) GO INSERT INTO #TempTable EXEC SampleSP GO Next we will retrieve our data from stored procedure. SELECT * FROM #TempTable GO Finally we will clean up all the objects which we have created. DROP TABLE #TempTable DROP PROCEDURE SampleSP GO Let me know if you want me to share such back to basic tips. • SQL SERVER 2008 – 2011 – Declare and Assign Variable in Single Statement

    - by pinaldave
Many of us are tend to overlook simple things even if we are capable of doing complex work. In SQL Server 2008, inline variable assignment is available. This feature exists from last 3 years, but I hardly see its utilization. One of the common arguments was that as the project migrated from the earlier version, the feature disappears. I totally accept this argument and acknowledge it. However, my point is that this new feature should be used in all the new coding – what is your opinion? The code which we used in SQL Server 2005 and the earlier version is as follows: DECLARE @iVariable INT, @vVariable VARCHAR(100), @dDateTime DATETIME SET @iVariable = 1 SET @vVariable = 'myvar' SET @dDateTime = GETDATE() SELECT @iVariable iVar, @vVariable vVar, @dDateTime dDT GO The same should be re-written as following: DECLARE @iVariable INT = 1, @vVariable VARCHAR(100) = 'myvar', @dDateTime DATETIME = GETDATE() SELECT @iVariable iVar, @vVariable vVar, @dDateTime dDT GO I have started to use this new method to assign variables as I personally find it very easy to read as well write. Do you still use the earlier method to declare and assign variables? If yes, is there any particular reason or just an old routine? I am interested to hear about this. • T-SQL select where and group by date

    - by bconlon
T-SQL has never been my favorite language, but I need to use it on a fairly regular basis and every time I seem to Google the same things. So if I add it here, it might help others with the same issues, but it will also save me time later as I will know where to look for the answers!! 1. How do I SELECT FROM WHERE to filter on a DateTime column? As it happens this is easy but I always forget. You just put the DATE value in single quotes and in standard format: SELECT StartDate FROM Customer WHERE StartDate >= '2011-01-01' ORDER BY StartDate 2. How do I then GROUP BY and get a count by StartDate? Bit trickier, but you can use the built in DATEADD and DATEDIFF to set the TIME part to midnight, allowing the GROUP BY to have a consistent value to work on: SELECT DATEADD (d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, StartDate),0) [Customer Creation Date], COUNT(*) [Number Of New Customers] FROM Customer WHERE StartDate >= '2011-01-01' GROUP BY DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, StartDate),0) ORDER BY [Customer Creation Date] Note: [Customer Creation Date] and [Number Of New Customers] column alias just provide more readable column headers. 3. Finally, how can you format the DATETIME to only show the DATE part (after all the TIME part is now always midnight)? The built in CONVERT function allows you to convert the DATETIME to a CHAR array using a specific format. The format is a bit arbitrary and needs looking up, but 101 is the U.S. standard mm/dd/yyyy, and 103 is the U.K. standard dd/mm/yyyy. SELECT CONVERT(CHAR(10), DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, StartDate),0), 103) [Customer Creation Date], COUNT(*) [Number Of New Customers] FROM Customer WHERE StartDate >= '2011-01-01' GROUP BY DATEADD(d, DATEDIFF(d, 0, StartDate),0) ORDER BY [Customer Creation Date]  #

  • Most common parts of a SELECT SQL query?

    - by jnrbsn
I'm writing a function that generates a SELECT SQL query. (I'm not looking for a tool that already does this.) My function currently takes the following arguments which correspond to different parts of the SELECT query (the base table name is already known): where order fields joins group limit All of these arguments will be optional so that the function generates something like this by default: SELECT * FROM `table_name` I want to order the arguments so that the most often used parts of a SELECT query are first. That way the average call to the function will use as few of the arguments as possible rather than passing a null value or something like that to skip an argument. For example, if someone wanted to use the 1st and 3rd arguments but not the rest, they might have to pass a null value as the 2nd argument in order to skip it. So, for general purpose use, how should I order the arguments? Edit: To be more precise, out of the query parts I listed above, what is the order from most used to least used? Also, I'm not looking for solutions that allow me to not have to specify the order. Edit #2: The "fields" argument will default to "*" (i.e all fields/columns).

  • after BIOS splash, will not boot -- asks me to select an OS, but it just reboots

    - by user92040
I'm running Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit. Everything has been working for several weeks. Yesterday, when I tried to boot up my computer, after the BIOS screen flashes I reach a screen with a black background that reads at the top: GNU GRUB version1.99-21ubuntu3.4 Then there is a box in which I can select from the following lines: Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) -- recovery mode Previous Linux versions Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) At the bottom it reads: Use the ? and ? keys to select which entry is highlighed. Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting or 'c' for a command-line. I have no idea why it started doing this and, worse, I have no idea how to get out of here. No matter which option I select, I can't get it to boot the OS. If I select either of the first two, it reboots to splash the BIOS and then I'm right back where I started. If I choose "Previous Linux versions" I get essentially the same screen with only two choices (which are the same as the first two choices listed above, Linux 13 MATE and the recovery mode). Again, choosing either one of those results in a reboot. If I try to run either of the memtest options, it reads: error: unknown command 'linux16', Press any key to continue... Then it brings me back to the same screen Can anyone help me please? Intel Core i5-2500 ASUS P8Z68-V LX Intel Motherboard G. • Is it possible to write a Java printf statement that prints the statement itself?

    - by polygenelubricants
Is it possible to have a Java printf statement, whose output is the statement itself? Some snippet to illustrate: // attempt #1 public class Main { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.printf("something"); } } This prints something. So the output of attempt #1 is not quite exactly the printf statement in attempt #1. We can try something like this: // attempt #2 public class Main { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.printf("System.out.printf(\"something\");"); } } And now the output is System.out.printf("something"); So now the output of attempt #2 matches the statement in output #1, but we're back to the problem we had before, since we need the output of attempt #2 to match the statement in attempt #2. So is it possible to write a one-line printf statement that prints itself?

  • Why does this SELECT ... JOIN statement return no results?

    - by Stephen
I have two tables: 1. tableA is a list of records with many columns. There is a timestamp column called "created" 2. tableB is used to track users in my application that have locked a record in tableA for review. It consists of four columns: id, user_id, record_id, and another timestamp collumn. I'm trying to select up to 10 records from tableA that have not been locked by for review by anyone in tableB (I'm also filtering in the WHERE clause by a few other columns from tableA like record status). Here's what I've come up with so far: SELECT tableA.* FROM tableA LEFT OUTER JOIN tableB ON tableA.id = tableB.record_id WHERE tableB.id = NULL AND tableA.status = 'new' AND tableA.project != 'someproject' AND tableA.created BETWEEN '1999-01-01 00:00:00' AND '2010-05-06 23:59:59' ORDER BY tableA.created ASC LIMIT 0, 10; There are currently a few thousand records in tableA and zero records in tableB. There are definitely records that fall between those timestamps, and I've verified this with a simple SELECT * FROM tableA WHERE created BETWEEN '1999-01-01 00:00:00' AND '2010-05-06 23:59:59' The first statement above returns zero rows, and the second one returns over 2,000 rows.

  • In SQL, why is "select *, count(*) from sentGifts group by whenSent;" ok, but when "*" and "count(*)

    - by Jian Lin
    In SQL, using the table: mysql> select * from sentGifts; +--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+--------+ | sentID | whenSent | fromID | toID | trytryWhen | giftID | +--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+--------+ | 1 | 2010-04-24 | 123 | 456 | 2010-04-24 01:52:20 | 100 | | 2 | 2010-04-24 | 123 | 4568 | 2010-04-24 01:56:04 | 100 | | 3 | 2010-04-24 | 123 | NULL | NULL | 1 | | 4 | 2010-04-24 | NULL | 111 | 2010-04-24 03:10:42 | 2 | | 5 | 2010-03-03 | 11 | 22 | 2010-03-03 00:00:00 | 6 | | 6 | 2010-04-24 | 11 | 222 | 2010-04-24 03:54:49 | 6 | | 7 | 2010-04-24 | 1 | 2 | 2010-04-24 03:58:45 | 6 | +--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+--------+ 7 rows in set (0.00 sec) The following is OK: mysql> select *, count(*) from sentGifts group by whenSent; +--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+--------+----------+ | sentID | whenSent | fromID | toID | trytryWhen | giftID | count(*) | +--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+--------+----------+ | 5 | 2010-03-03 | 11 | 22 | 2010-03-03 00:00:00 | 6 | 1 | | 1 | 2010-04-24 | 123 | 456 | 2010-04-24 01:52:20 | 100 | 6 | +--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+--------+----------+ 2 rows in set (0.00 sec) But suppose we want the count(*) to appear as the first column: mysql> select count(*), * from sentGifts group by whenSent; ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '* from sentGifts group by whenSent' at line 1 it gave an error. Why is it so and what is a way to fix it? I realized that this is ok: mysql> select count(*), whenSent from sentGifts group by whenSent; +----------+------------+ | count(*) | whenSent | +----------+------------+ | 1 | 2010-03-03 | | 6 | 2010-04-24 | +----------+------------+ 2 rows in set (0.00 sec) but what about the one above that gave an error? thanks.

  • Is there a more elegant solution than an if-statement with no else clause?

    - by Jay
In the following code, if Control (the element that trigers Toggle's first OL) is not Visible it should be set Visible and all other Controls (Controls[i]) so be Hidden. .js function Toggle(Control){ var Controls=document.getElementsByTagName("ol",document.getElementById("Quote_App")); var Control=Control.getElementsByTagName("ol")[0]; if(Control.style.visibility!="visible"){ for(var i=0;i<Controls.length;i++){ if(Controls[i]!=Control){ Reveal("hide",20,0.3,Controls[i]); }else{ Reveal("show",20,0.3,Control); }; }; }else{ Reveal("hide",20,0.3,Control); }; }; Although the function [Toggle] works fine, it is actually setting Controls[i] to Hidden even if it is already. This is easily rectified by adding an If statement as in the code below, surely there is a more elegant solution, maybe a complex If condition? .js function Toggle(Control){ var Controls=document.getElementsByTagName("ol",document.getElementById("Quote_App")); var Control=Control.getElementsByTagName("ol")[0]; if(Control.style.visibility!="visible"){ for(var i=0;i<Controls.length;i++){ if(Controls[i]!=Control){ if(Controls[i].style.visibility=="visible"){ Reveal("hide",20,0.3,Controls[i]); }; }else{ Reveal("show",20,0.3,Control); }; }; }else{ Reveal("hide",20,0.3,Control); }; }; Your help is appreciated always.

  • How to convert a list object to bigdecimal in prepared statement?

    - by user1103504
I am using prepared statement for bulk insertion of records. Iam iterating a list which contains values and their dataTypes differ. One of the data type is BigDecimal and when i try to set calling preparedstatement, it is throwing null pointer exception. My code int count = 1; for (int j = 0; j < list.size(); j++) { if(list.get(j) instanceof Timestamp) { ps.setTimestamp(count, (Timestamp) list.get(j)); } else if(list.get(j) instanceof java.lang.Character) { ps.setString(count, String.valueOf(list.get(j))); } else if(list.get(j) instanceof java.math.BigDecimal) { ps.setBigDecimal(count, (java.math.BigDecimal)list.get(j)); } else { ps.setObject(count, list.get(j)); } count++; } I tried 2 ways to convert, casting the object and tried to create a new object of type BigDecimal ps.setBigDecimal(count, new BigDecimal(list.get(j).toString)); both donot solve my problem. It is throwing null pointer exception. help is appreciated. Thanks

  • C++: Simple data type for a variable in IF statement?

    - by Jason
I am new to C++ and am making a simple text RPG, anyway, The scenario is I have a "welcome" screen with choices 1-3, and have a simple IF statement to check them, here: int choice; std::cout << "--> "; std::cin >> choice; if(choice == 1) { //.. That works fine, but if someone enters a letter as selection (instead of 1, 2 or 3) it'll become "-392493492"or something and crash the program. So I came up with: char choice; std::cout << "--> "; std::cin >> choice; if(choice == 1) { //.. This works kinda fine, but when I enter a number it seems to skip the IF statements completely.. Is the char "1" the same as the number 1? I get a compiler errro with this (ISO-CPP or something): if(choice == "1") So how on earth do I see if they entered 1-3 correctly!?

  • PHP: PDOStatement simple MySQL Select doesn't work.

    - by Alan
    Hi I have the following PHP code doing a very simple select into a table. $statement = $db->prepare("SELECT * FROM account WHERE fbid = :fbid"); $statement->bindParam(":fbid",$uid, PDO::PARAM_STR,45); $out = $statement->execute(); $row = $statement->fetch(); $out is true (success) yet $row is null. If I modify the code as follows: $statement = $db->prepare("SELECT * FROM account WHERE fbid = $uid"); $out = $statement->execute(); $row = $statement->fetch(); $row contains the record I'm expecting. I'm at a loss. I'm using the PDO::prepare(), bindParams() etc to protect against SQL Injection (maybe I'm mistaken on that). Please halp.

  • Oracle/c#: How do i use bind variables with select statements to return multiple records?

    - by twiga
I have a question regarding Oracle bind variables and select statements. What I would like to achieve is do a select on a number different values for the primary key. I would like to pass these values via an array using bind values. select * from tb_customers where cust_id = :1 int[] cust_id = { 11, 23, 31, 44 , 51 }; I then bind a DataReader to get the values into a table. The problem is that the resulting table only contains a single record (for cust_id=51). Thus it seems that each statement is executed independently (as it should), but I would like the results to be available as a collective (single table). A workaround is to create a temporary table, insert all the values of cust_id and then do a join against tb_customers. The problem with this approach is that I would require temporary tables for every different type of primary key, as I would like to use this against a number of tables (some even have combined primary keys). Is there anything I am missing?

  • Is select() Ok to implement single socket read/write timeout ?

    - by chmike
I have an application processing network communication with blocking calls. Each thread manages a single connection. I've added a timeout on the read and write operation by using select prior to read or write on the socket. Select is known to be inefficient when dealing with large number of sockets. But is it ok, in term of performance to use it with a single socket or are there more efficient methods to add timeout support on single sockets calls ? The benefit of select is to be portable.

  • MySQL : select/join on strings as fieldnames - is this possible?

    - by Dylan
I can retrieve all column names from table 'categories' with : SELECT col.column_name FROM information_schema.columns AS col WHERE col.table_schema= database() and col.table_name = "categories" This produces a resultset like this : column_name ----------------- categoryID name description I can retrieve all values for a specific category with : SELECT * FROM categories AS c WHERE c.categoryID=12345 this results in a resultset like this: categoryID | name | description ------------------------------------------------ 12345 | test | this is a test Now I would like to get some kind of join of above selects to get a resultset that looks something like this : fieldname | value ---------------------------------------- categoryID | 12345 name | test description | this is a test Does anyone know if this is possible ? Can you do a join on strings that come from another select ?? The reason for this is that I'm writing a universal stored procedure that outputs all fields + their values from a table, without knowing what fields there are in the table. (The tablename is given in a parameter)
