  • Is there a way to tell if a file is done copying?

    The scenario is this: Machine A has files I want to copy to Machine C. Machine A can't access C directly, but can access Machine B that can access Machine C. I am using scp to copy from Machine A to B, and then from B to C. Machine B has limited storage space, so as files come in, I need to copy them to C and delete them from B. The second copy is much faster, so this is no problem with bandwidth. I could do this by hand, but I am lazy. What I would like is to run a script on B or C that will copy each file to C as each one finishes. The scp job is running from A. So what I need is a way to ask (preferably from a bash script) if file X.avi is "done" copying. Each of these files is a different size, and I can't really predict size or time of completion. Edit: by the way, the file transfer times are something about 1 hour from A to B and about 10 minutes from B to C, if time scale matters at all.

  • VIM: How do you get the last ex command you used?

    I find that sometimes I write a really long ex mode command that do lots of stuff. They are sort of "mini-scripts" that I write in the text editor then I start ex mode and copy them into the ex line and execute. But then I always end up editing in the ex mode and then I find it difficult to get the changes i did in ex mode back to my text editing session. Using the keyboard, how do you copy the last ex command you used and paste it into your text editor? (Note: This is sort of the opposite of this question "how do I copy/paste in vim ex mode" where the user asks "how do you copy from the text editor and paste INTO the ex mode?". My question is the opposite because I wish to copy from the ex mode and paste into my text editor.)

  • Copy Database Wizard fails on creation of view into another not-yet-copied database

    Update - I found that doing a manual detach/reattach using MSDN article "How to: Move a Database Using Detach and Attach (Transact-SQL)" got around this issue. I'll just be creating a script to dettach and reattach but do the file copies manually. Any info on how to overcome the problems with the wizard would be helpful in the future. I am in the process of moving around 20 databases from our current server to a new one. When performing the copies however I have found that some databases can not copy if they have views into other databases that have not yet been copied to the target system. The log file generated says "failed with the following error: "Invalid object name" in reference to the database in the view. If I first copy just the database referenced in the view and then in a separate step copy the database over containing the view it is successful. However some other database have views into each other so can't just adjust the order in which the copy occurs. Is there any way to ignore this error and just allow everything to copy?

  • Cannot copy anything onto WD Elements 1TB External USB HDD

    I have a Western Digital 1023 Elements 1TB External USB HDD. Recently, it has started an unusual problem. I cannot copy any file of any size on to that 1TB hard-drive, eventhough it has more than 400 GB free (out of 931GB actual size). I tried copying movies from one friends laptop, which did not work. I also tried another desktop to copy some study material e-books (in PDF), which also did not work. I get same CRC error when I try to copy anything from a computer's hard-drive onto this WD 1TB hard-drive. Vice-versa it's working. I mean, I can copy any file from the USB HDD onto local machine's HDD on any computer. It's like one-way traffic. This HDD is only 1 year old. What are my options ? Any suggestions ?   • Photoshop: left-handed copy/paste?

    Being left-handed, I use the mouse in my left hand. In most applications I use CTRL+INSERT/SHIFT+INSERT to copy and paste (with my right hand). For some bone-headed reason, this is not supported in Photoshop, so I have to use right-click COPY sub-menus, which is a lot slower. Is there a way to configure Photoshop to use CTRL+INSERT to copy and SHIFT+INSERT to paste?

  • Copy files off FreeBSD

    I have a FreeBSD machine that I have to copy everything off the drive. The fielsystem is UFS and not readable by any other operating system. (great...) I have a USB flash drive (FAT32) I need to copy everything to from the SATA in the bsd machine. I looked up cp commands, and got it to partially work, but it seems to copy to the wrong directory. I cannot find out the "name" of the USB drive, and if it can even copy to it.

    I have weird problem with copying files. When I copy file from network drive into C drive nothing happens but when I copy file from network drive to desktop I can copy the file. Also if I copy files from desktop into C it works fine. I have full local admin permission on this PC and the network drive.   • Linux Firefox copy/paste issue

    I'm using Firefox 15.0.1 on Fedora 17 without running gnome or kde. The problem I'm having is that whenever I select text outside of Firefox, for instance in xterm, the middle mouse button doesn't copy it inside Firefox, for instance in a text area, but rather brings up a context menu. A related problem is that whenever I middle click inside Firefox, for instance in a text input, the middle mouse button brings up a menu when I'd like it to paste. Even if I select Paste in the menu not the selected text (from outside Firefox) gets pasted but the last selected text inside Firefox. In about:config I tried "middlemouse.paste true" and also "middlemouse.paste false" together with the add-on Auto Copy but no combination worked. A middle mouse click always brings up a context menu. But the Auto Copy did help with automatically copying selected text to the clipboard. With Auto Copy the only problem I still have is pasting by middle button. Follow up: somehow the problem solved itself. After removing Auto Copy firefox works as I expect it to (as any X application). I can't figure out why it was not doing it before, probably I was messing too much with about:config and not restarting frequently enough.

  • How can I "shadow" the filesystem on Linux?

    On a Linux environment sometimes I need to run a script as root which will add/modify serveral files on my fs. Basically I'd like to know exactly which files are modified and how WITHOUT opening the script and trying to guess the code. I was thinking about using something like unionfs: the main fs would be accessible in readonly mode and all changes are written on a file used as a partition and "mounted" in write mode. Are there other ways to achieve the same goal (i.e. other than unionfs)?

  • SVN: Working with branches using the same working copy

    We've just moved to SVN from CVS. We have a small team and everyone checks in code on the trunk and we have never ever used branches for development. We each have directories on a remote dev server with the codebase checked out. Each developer works on their own sandbox with an associated URL to pull up the app in a browser (something like the setup here: Trade-offs of local vs remote development workflows for a web development team). I've decided that for my current project, I'll use a branch because it would span multiple releases. I've already cut a branch out, but I am using the same directory as the one originally checked out (i.e. for the trunk). Since it's the same directory (or working copy) for both the branch and the trunk, if for e.g. a bug pops up in the app I switch to the trunk and commit the change there, and then switch back to my branch for my project development. My questions are: Is this a sane way to work with branches? Are there any pitfalls that I need to be aware of? What would be the optimal way to work with branches if separate working copies are out of the question? I haven't had issues yet as I have just started doing this way but all the tutorials/books/blog posts I have seen about branching with SVN imply working with different working copies (or perhaps I haven't come across an explanation of mixed working copies in plain English). I just don't want to be sorry three months down the road when its time to integrate the branch back to the trunk.

  • Copy wrongs and Copyright

    Recently, a Chinese blog website copied, wholesale and without permission, a Simple-Talk article on troubleshooting locking and blocking. Our initial reaction was exasperation and anger, tempered slightly by the fact that there was, at the top, a clear link to the original, and the book from which it was extracted. On the day the copy was posted, our original article saw a 30K spike in visits, so the site clearly has a substantial following! This made us pause for thought. Indeed, we wondered whether it might not be more profitable, and certainly more enjoyable, to notify the offender of similar content and serve a "put up" notice, rather than the usual DMCA "take down" . The DMCA request, issued to protect our and our authors' assets, is a necessary but tiresome, chore. So often, simple communication and negotiation could have averted the need for it. We are, after all, in the business of presenting knowledge, information and help to the SQL Server Community. If only they had asked! Of course, one's attitude changes according to the motivation behind the copying of content. One of the motivations seems to be pure vanity; they do it to try to enhance their CV, or their company's expertise, by pretending to expertise they don't possess. There is a class of plagiariser, however, that is doing it purely for money, getting advertising revenue by attracting hapless readers to their site. Not content with stealing content, sites can invest in services that provide 'load-testing' for websites that is so realistic that even the search engines can be fooled. Stolen content, fake visitors, swindled advertisers. Zero-tolerance is really the only way of dealing with plagiarism, and action will only be completely effective once Bing, Google, and the other search engines strike out from their listings the rogue sites that refuse to take down plagiarised content.   • Correcting owner/permissions on damaged directory tree in linux

    I inadvertently made a backup copy of a directory recursively and forgot the -a (--preserve) switch when doing so. This damaged my backup directory (which contains data we need to access). The directory and all of its child folders and files comprise an installation of an application including postgress DB and solr files. The original copy was used to for a failed re-config attempt. Now I need to use the backup copy to start over, only the ownership of the backup copy is now root across everything and it is no longer usable (processes won't run due to ownership problems I created when I forgot the -a on the cp -r). I've re-installed a clean copy of the application into a 3rd location now (which has the correct owner/perms) and need to copy the owner/perms from this good directory over onto the damaged directory. What is the best way (if even possible) to do this. (I've Googled and seen things from perl scripting to setfacl/getfacl to do this but am unfortunately still confused). Apologies if this seems a dumb question. Thanks.

ERROR :Object reference not set to an instance of an object. EDIT : Only column is copied to another table, data of that column is not copied to another table.
