• What can I do to make my eService website customers feel it is a luxurious service? [closed]

  I'm developing an e-service website that its monetization model is via paid membership. Beside quality service and content, because I'm serving them for a high fee, I want to make them feel like it is a personal, unparalleled kind of service and I want to spend money for creating things that I give them after their registration such as a beautiful physical membership card so that I can use the effect of mouth-words better and beside that let them be proud about the service. I've tried my best to develop the site experience classy and I'm looking for things in real world to send them after their registration (such as membership card and a small paper tutorial). What are your suggestions? Have you seen things like this before that a website sends you some physical things for making you more loyal and/or something like that? Please kindly share your experiences/suggestions.

• Windows Service Setup issue removing the windows service

  I'm doing a windows service setup project on VS2008, it has a custom action for setting app.config values. The setup work fine installing the service and setting the app.config values but when I try to uninstall the service, it removes the files but keep the service registered, so I can install it again using the setup, I need to use "sc delete " in the vs command prompt to proper remove the service... anyone have any idea which could be the issue here? Thank you.

• SQL Server service accounts and SPNs

  Service Principal Names (SPNs) are a must for kerberos authentication which is a must when using sharepoint, reporting services and sql server where you access one server that then needs to access another resource, this is called the double hop. The reason this is a complex problem is that the second hop has to be done with impersonation/delegation. For this to work there needs to be a way for the security system to make sure that the service in the middle is allowed to impersonate you, after all you are not giving the service your password. To do this you need to be using kerberos. The following is my simple interpretation of how kerberos works. I find the Kerberos documentation rediculously complex so the following might be sligthly wrong but I think its close enough. Keberos works on a ticketing system, the prinicipal is that you get a security token from AD and then you can pass that to the service in the middle which can then use that token to impersonate you. For that to work AD has to be able to identify who is allowed to use the token, in this case the service account.But how do you as a client know what service account the service in the middle is configured with. The answer is SPNs. The SPN is the mapping between your logical connection to the service account. One type of SPN is for the DNS name for the server and the port. i.e. MySQL.mydomain.com and 1433. You can see how this maps to SQL Server on that server, but how does it map to the account. Well it can be done in two ways, either you can have a mapping defined in AD or AD can use a default mapping (this is something I didn't know about). To map the SPN in AD then you have to add the SPN to the user account, this is documented in the first link below either directly or using a tool called SetSPN. You might say that is complex, well it is and thats why SQL Server tries to do it for you, at start up it tries to connect to AD and set the SPN on the account it is running as, clearly that can only happen IF SQL is running as a domain account AND importantly it has permission to do so. By default a normal domain user account doesn't have the correct permission, and is why so many people have this problem. If the account is a domain admin then it will have permission, but non of us run SQL using domain admin accounts do we. You might also note that the SPN contains the port number (this isn't a requirement now in sql 2008 but I won't go into that), so if you set it manually and you are using dynamic ports (the default for a named instance) what do you do, well every time the port changes you need to change the SPN allocated to the account. Thats why its advised to let SQL Server register the SPN itself. You may also have thought, well what happens if I change my service account, won't that lead to two accounts with the same SPN. Possibly. Having two accounts with the same SPN is definitely a problem. Why? Well because if there are two accounts Kerberos can't identify the exact account that the service is running as, it could be either account, and so your security falls back to NTLM. SETSPN is useful for finding duplicate SPNs Reading this you will probably be thinking Oh my goodness this is really difficult. It is however I've found today in investigating something else that there is an easy option. Use Network Service as your service account. Network Service is a special account and is tied to the computer. It appears that Network Service has the update rights to AD to set an SPN mapping for the computer account. This then allows the SPN mapping to work. I believe this also works for the local system account. To get all the SPNs in your AD run the following, it could be a large file, so you might want to restrict it to a specific OU, or CN ldifde -d "DC=<domain>" -l servicePrincipalName -F spn.txt You will read in the links below that you need SQL to register the SPN this is done how to use Kerberos authenticaiton in SQL Server - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319723 Using Kerberos with SQL Server - http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2005/10/12/479871.aspx Understanding Kerberos and NTLM authentication in SQL Server Connections - http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2006/12/02/understanding-kerberos-and-ntlm-authentication-in-sql-server-connections.aspx Summary The only reason I personally know to use a domain account is when you can't get kerberos to work and you want to do BULK INSERT or other network service that requires access to a a remote server. In this case you have to resort to using SQL authentication and the SQL Server uses its service account to access the remote service, and thus you need a domain account. You migth need this if using some forms of replication. I've always found Kerberos awkward to setup and so fallen back to this domain account approach. So in summary to get Kerberos to work try using the network service or local system accounts. • Automated Error Reporting = More Robust Software

  I would like to tell you how to revolutionize your software development process </marketing hyperbole> On a more serious note, we (Red Gate's .NET Development team) recently rolled a new tool into our development process which has made our lives dramatically easier AND improved the quality of our software, and I (& one of our developers, Alex Davies) just wanted to take a quick moment to share the love. I work with a development team that takes pride in what they ship, so we take software testing rather seriously. For every development project we run, we allocate at least one software tester for every two developers, and we never ship software without first shipping early access releases and betas to get user feedback. And therein lies the challenge -encouraging users to provide consistent, useful feedback is a headache, but without that feedback, improving the software is. tricky. Until fairly recently, we used the standard (if long-winded) approach of receiving bug reports of variable quality via email or through our support forums. If that didn't give us enough information to reproduce the problem - which was most of the time - we had to enter into a time-consuming to-and-fro conversation with the end-user, to get scrape together the data we needed to work out where the problem lay. As I'm sure you're aware, this is painfully slow. To the delight of the team, we recently got to work with SmartAssembly, which lets us embed automated exception and error reporting into our software with very little pain, and we decided to do a little dogfooding. As a result, we've have made a really handy (if perhaps slightly obvious) discovery: As soon as we release a beta, or indeed any release of software, we now get tonnes of customer feedback through automated error reports. Making this process easier for our users has dramatically increased the amount (and quality) of feedback we get. From their point of view, they get an experience similar to Microsoft's error reporting, and process is essentially idiot-proof. From our side of things, we can now react much faster to the information we get, fixing the bugs and shipping a new-and-improved release, which our users rather appreciate. Smiles and hugs all round. Even more so because, as we're use SmartAssembly's Automated Error Reporting, we get to avoid having to spend weeks building an exception reporting mechanism. It takes just a few minutes to add reporting to a project, and we get a bunch of useful information back, like a stack trace and the values of all the local variables, which we can use to fix bugs. Happily, "Automated Error Reporting = More Robust Software" can actually be read two ways: we've found that we not only ship higher quality software, but we also release within a shorter time. We can ship stable software that our users are happy to upgrade to, and we then bask in the glory of lots of positive customer feedback. Once we'd starting working with SmartAssembly, we were curious to know how widespread error reporting was as a practice. Our product manager ran a survey in autumn last year, and found that 40% of software developers never really considered deploying error reporting. Considering how we've now got plenty of experience on the subject, one of our dev guys, Alex Davies, thought we should share what we've learnt, and he's kindly offered to host a webinar on delivering robust software with Automated Error Reporting. • What quality standards to consider for software development process?

  Hi, i'm looking for metrics/standards/normatives to evaluate a given "Software Development Process". I'm NOT looking to evaluate the SOFTWARE itself (trough SQUARE and such), i'm trying to evaluate software development PROCESS. So, my question is if you could give me some pointers to find this standard, considering that "evaluation objetives" would be documentation quality, how good is the customer relation, how efective is the process, etc. Very much like a ISO 9000, and like CMMI on a sense, but much lightweight and concrete and process oriented, not company oriented. Please help, i'm trying to stablish the advantages of our development process as formal as i can.

• Isn't GPL enough to make a software free as in free speech?

  I have read people rebutting the fact that a certain software is free as in free speech, even when it is licensed under GPL. Some say Java isn't free because to obtain a professional certification you must get it from Oracle. Some say Java JDK is not free to re-distribute. Some people even say the openJDK is not free or open. But Java is officially GPL. Doesn't GPL explicitly mean you are free to re-distribute ? Isn't GPL enough to make a software free as in free speech ? How can Java be both GPL and not-free as in free speech ? Is there is any license that trully makes a software free beyond any possible subjetive point of view? EDIT: These question is not about names or trademarks, it's about the code.

• Can I customize the appearance of the Ubuntu Software Center?

  I just opened software-center for the first time since ages(am an apt-get kinda guy) an my first taught was, Meh. Design of it, is not my only issue! the overall look and feel is a bit, Meh. It looks like everything has been thrown in to a direction, and thats it. It works! But it looks, Meh. • Why isn't Japanese software industry as strong as their hardware technology?

  I admire Japanese technology and their innovation. They always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else. But why isn't their software industry just as developed? Why aren't there any Japanese operating systems, high-end game engines, 3D digital content creation applications? I would like to see their take on these and I think it could bring alot of innovation. Btw I mentioned 3D software because the animation industry is strong there as well, but they are using North American software for this.

• How do I specify a string to display in the Ubuntu software-center when creating a package with dpkg-deb?

  When I open *.deb packages downloaded from the internet in the Ubuntu software-center, it displays a "nice" name for the package (including upper- and lowercase, spaces, special characters, ...). When I create a *.deb package from binaries only using dpkg-deb -b, Ubuntu Software Center displays the "technical" package name (the one specified at the Package: field in the control file, limited to lowercase only, no spaces, ...). Is there any way to provide a string different from the "technical" package name (including upper- and lowercase, spaces, special characters, ...) for display in the Ubuntu software Center? Unfortunately, this can not be done via the short description (that is displayed below the "technical" name, but not replacing it).

As I get closer to my senior year I have noticed that continuing my studies is the best choice right for me now. I see that several universities offer an Computer Science Master's Degree and an Software Engineering degree. What are their pros and cons? I feel that while the Computer Science master's degree seems a little too broad the Software Engineering is too restrictive. I did not decide yet between an career of Software development or research ( algorithm development among other things ). Any advice would be greatly apreciated!

I feel like my resume is totally inappropriate for my current career goals. Listing laboratory skills and accomplishments is not the same as listing software development skills and accomplishments. Oddly enough, I can't seem to find any resources for writing a engineer's resume online that aren't older than 5 years. GitHub and StackExchange profiles seem like as important resume items as anything, yet I don't know how to list them on a resume, or whether they are appropriate at all. So what is a modern software engineer's resume supposed to look like?

E.g like: LibreOffice | I use Google Doc etc. RhythmBox | I use Google Play Music Thunderbird | I use Gmail, don't like client Videos | Watch online Messaging | Hangouts And other softwares like Remmina Client, BitTorrent Client. Can I simply remove it in Ubuntu Software Centre? I like my Laptop clean and having unmessy software that I never use. I normally use Chromium Browser to do all the stuff, I think I am heavy user of Google, and love the simplicity of Ubuntu. Lol! Can anyone tell or guide me? Thanks!

• Problems migrating software RAID 5 to new server (linux)

  I have a CentOS setup with sw RAID5 that holds my data. Well, the server died, so I bought another box to migrate my drives to. Only thing is, I cannot get the RAID array rebuilt (not even sure it needs rebuilding, might just need the /dev/md0 mapping created... but I don't even know how to determine what I need!) Some details: RAID5 software (used mdadm) 4x 250GB drives (2 are SATA, 2 are EIDE -- would this matter? It worked fine in the other box...) latest CentOS distro built using mdadm I've got a decent amount of experience with standard linux stuff, but the hardware level stuff runs me in circles. I've spent some time googling and elsewhere here on SF, so please be kind for my newbie questions :). My question is this: how can I diagnose the problem? For all I know, I'm using the wrong device blocks when I try to rebuild the array, but I can't find the command to display only the devices that have some physical attachment. Is there some simple way for me to run mdadm, having it scan over all my physical drives, and say "hey, drives 2,5,6,7 are a software array, want me to mount it?" I basically just took the drives from my old box and put it into my new one. They show up in the BIOS. What steps do I need to take in order to get the array up, running, and mounted? • Are Windows Domain Service Accounts Really Necessary?

  One of the biggest problems we have in automating application deployments is the idea that running IIS AppPools and Windows Services under domain service accounts is a 'best practice'. Unfortunately, this best practice sometimes causes deployment headaches in that either we need to provision a new domain level service account quickly, or once we have the account, we now need to manage the account credentials. I had a great conversation about not making domain level service accounts a requirement and effectively taking one of two approaches: Secure at the node level using machine account(domain\machine$) and add the node to appropriate ActiveDirectory/Sql groups/roles Create local app specific accounts on each machine (machine\myapp) and add that account to appropriate ActiveDirectory/Sql groups/roles (the password here can change per deployment, it doesn't need to be stored) In both cases, it seems that its easier to manage either adding an account to appropriate group/role, or even stand up new, local account, than it is to have to provision a new domain level account and manage those credentials. This would hopefully ease the management burden on ActiveDirectory, Sql Server and Operations teams as there would be no more password management. We've not actually been able to implement this in practice yet. I am coming from a development background, so I'm curious as to how many ways this approach could go wrong? Can we really get rid of domain level service accounts with this direction? I'd appreciate any thoughts from anyone who has taken this path! Thanks! Zach

• Alternative software for Pinnacle PCTV 100e

  I have a Pinnacle PCTV 100e external USB cable television receiver. I've been using Pinnacle's software that came with the card (TVCenter Pro) to record things at given times. Things I don't like is an extremely high CPU load, and that it doesn't seem to halt the screensaver from running when watching in full screen. Also, I was away the last two weeks, and the schedules went terribly bust. Some items were recorded hours before or after the actual scheduled time (and now I missed some shows), and some recurring schedules weren't converted into the next occurrence correctly! Is there good alternative software that would work with my PCTV 100e? (Preferalby cheap or free) I've tried VLC Player, which gets video, but no audio. I've tried MediaPortal, which crashes when trying to scan for channels. When I select a channel manually, the stored mpg has big errors in encoding and is also missing audio. There's VirtualDub, but that doesn't have ready-made scheduled-recording options. This I can conjure some scheduled scripts for, but I've noticed the sync gets awfully wrong after some time. I've tried Windows Media Center, but it doesn't seem to support the PCTV 100e.

  Every day I realize how much I love Visual Studio for .NET development.... but, I believe that Resharper, may hold a value that surpasses Visual Studio's (I am using VS 2005 for WPF/WCF development). I decided it would be great to compile a list of the most valuable tools for software development. These can be applications/plug-ins anything that you think holds GREAT value. Also, please explain the benefits of the tool that you are posting. Resharper: Intergrated Unit testing "Camel Hump" code auto completion Find "usings" (inverse of "Go to Deceleration") Code formating and member rearranging Assembly and namespace inclusion (based on your code) Check for common optimizations and possible bugs in code and suggests/rewrites the code for you (things like null checking, redundant delegate creation, inverting if statements, etc...); Tells you when code and be more generic (may suggest things like "use this interface instead" if your code never refers to something specific on an object) Helps you see code that is not being used and will clean any unused members. File structure view helps you jump around the regions of your file (this is really awesome and clean). Class searching (you can use things like camel humps) Asks you which partial file to open once you find a class. It also has it's own plugin support, so you can do things like FxCop, documentation and relfector (all free). This thing has so much I don't think I hit 10% of it yet :) [When I get time, I will try to add more... feel free to help me out]

• Calling a WCF service from another WCF service

  Hi ! I have a WCF service hosted on a windows service on my Server1. It also has IIS on this machine. I call the service from a web app and it works fine. But within this service, I have to call another WCF sevice (also hosted on a windows service) located on Server2. The security credentials are set to "Message" and "Username". I have an error like "SOAP protcol negociation failed". It's a problem with my server certificate public key that doesn't seem to be recognise. However, if I call the service on the Server2 from Server1 in a console app, it works fine. • Android: restful API service

  Hey, I'm looking to make a service which I can use to make calls to a web based rest api. I've spent a couple of days looking through stackoverflow.com, reading books and looking at articles whilst playing about with some code and I can't get anything which I'm happy with. Basically I want to start a service on app init then I want to be able to ask that service to request a url and return the results. In the meantime I want to be able to display a progress window or something similar. I've created a service currently which uses IDL, I've read somewhere that you only really need this for cross app communication, so think these needs stripping out but unsure how to do callbacks without it. Also when I hit the post(Config.getURL("login"), values) the app seems to pause for a while (seems weird - thought the idea behind a service was that it runs on a different thread!) Currently I have a service with post and get http methods inside, a couple of AIDL files (for two way communication), a ServiceManager which deals with starting, stopping, binding etc to the service and I'm dynamically creating a Handler with specific code for the callbacks as needed. I don't want anyone to give me a complete code base to work on, but some pointers would be greatly appreciated; even if it's to say I'm doing it completely wrong. I'm pretty new to Android and Java dev so if there are any blindingly obvious mistakes here - please don't think I'm a rubbish developer, I'm just wet behind the ears and would appreciate being told exactly where I'm going wrong.   This error is logged once I create a website: The World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWW Service) did not register the URL prefix http://*:80/ for site 6. The necessary network binding may already be in use. The site has been disabled. The data field contains the error number. I followed this link but there is no ListenOnlyList, instead I saw UrlAclInfo which contains this: Any ideas to fix this?
