• Only some windows shell commands work via ruby?

  Hi. I'm trying to use a script to control my power options since XP doesn't give you an intuitive way to change CPU Frequency options. Here's my script so far: meh = `cmd.exe /C POWERCFG.EXE /QUERY Portable/Laptop` puts "" puts meh case input when 1 then system('cmd.exe /C POWERCFG.EXE /CHANGE Portable/Laptop /processor-throttle-ac NONE') when 2 then system('cmd.exe /C POWERCFG.EXE /CHANGE Portable/Laptop /processor-throttle-ac ADAPTIVE') when 3 then `cmd.exe /C POWERCFG.EXE /CHANGE Portable/Laptop /processor-throttle-ac CONSTANT` end The problem is that the changes simply don't take place. If I run the same commands directly into a cmd.exe prompt, they work. It's very strange, but nothing works after the initial powercfg query. I feel like I'm missing something incredibly obvious. How can I get the above script to run correctly?

• Problem with Replacing special characters in a string

  Hi, I am trying to feed some text to a special pupose parser. The problem with this parser is that it is sensitive to ()[] characters and in my sentence in the text have quite a lot of these characters. The manual for the parser suggests that all the ()[] get replaced with \( \) \[ \]. So using str.replace i am using to attach \ to all of those charcaters. I use the code below: a = 'abcdef(1234)' a.replace('(','\(') however i get this as my output: 'abcdef\\(1234)' What is wrong with my code? can anyone provide me a solution to solve this for these characters?

  How do I override a class special method? I want to be able to call the __str__() method of the class without creating an instance. It's only working when it's Foo().__str__() instead of Foo.__str__().

• Clean way to perform commands in the Emacs minibuffer

  Consider the following example: I want to read a file using ido from the minibuffer, but merge in all of the directories I use often. I can't just execute (ido-find-file) (ido-merge-work-directories) Because the second sexp will only execute after the user is finished selecting the file. The question then is: what is the best/cleanest way to execute commands in the minibuffer's command loop? The only way I know to do this is to bind my desired command to a key sequence, and add that sequence to unread-command-events so the key runs once we enter the minibuffer command loop: (setq unread-command-events (append (listify-key-sequence (kbd "M-s")) unread-command-events)) ; std key-binding for ido-merge-work-directories (ido-find-file) But that is very hacky, and I would like to know if there is a better solution. • the commands ls and get of ftp are not working in vmware

  Hi, Iam using vmware player version 3.1 to boot a minix 3 os image. After booting the minix os I want to get some files from a server using ftp. the ftp connection to the server works but when i use the commands "ls" or "get" nothing happens except it says "200 PORT command successful" and it hanges in there. The only thing i can do after typing ls+enter or get+enter is to exit the ftp by using ctrl+c. If anyone knows a solution to this? please help. Thank you

• Apple Magic Trackpad Gestures carried out as personalized Commands in Windows

  I want to have the Apple Magic Trackpad to work on Windows, but NOT as a regular Mouse! I will need the normal Trackpad Gestures to work with a c# Application (i.e. when carring out a 2 finger swipe to the left, it will start playing a song...). I guess I´ll have to write my own driver? Is there a way to use Apples MAgic Trackpad Driver for Windows and re-write that one? OR is there any way (API, self-written driver), so that I could just hook the gestures to my Commands? Or any RAW Input examples? Does anybody know how to do that, or where to start? Thank you so much, I´m really lost.

• Simplest way to use isdigit and isalpha commands ?

  Hello, Can anyone briefly explain how do these two commands work ? isdigit and isalpha .. Ofcourse I read online sources before asking the question, but unfortunately I tried them and didnt get them to work. What is the simplest way ? I know it gives back a value, so im assuming I can use it like this : if(isdigit(someinput)==1) return -1; Is that correct ? can I use this for any number ? Can I compare it with a float number ? Can I compare arrays ? Can I also use it when scanning documents or files ? For example, if I want to scanf a text file that has numbers and letters, and determine is what im scanning (isdigit) or (isalpha) ?? Thanks :)

  I want to remove all special characters from a string. Allowed characters are A-Z (uppercase or lowercase), numbers (0-9), underscore (_), or the dot sign (.).   Hi, I am using the listings package for latex. I am using the SQL language definition and am adding some new keywords that I need, using morekeywords=. I have trouble defining some special characters as keywords, for example, I need [], <, &, and - to be considered as keywords and use the keyword style.   Hello I'm building a Spring MVC web application that runs on Tomcat 6.0.20 and JDK 1.6.0_19. When I send some special characters through an HTML form some of them are stored as question marks ? For example these symbols are stored correctly: €, á, é, í, ‰, etc But some symbols are replaced with ? like: £, ?, ? MySQL tables charset is utf-8. My jsp also use utf-8 <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" pageEncoding="UTF-8" %> I have included org.springframework.web.filter.CharacterEncodingFilter in web.xml as suggested here When I debug the POST request when sending 3 characters €a£ with firebug I get: %E2%82%ACa%E2%82%A4 which is correct since E2 82 AC is the code for € and E2 82 A4 is the code for £ but £ is stored as ? in the database. When I save £ directly into the database it is displayed correctly in the webpage. How can I fix this?

  I am attempting to make a program in C which presents a GUI and allows the user to select from a list of applications, which to install on the computer. I can manage the gui, but I've never been taught how to actually issue command line commands. I know with bash its just apt-get install firefox for example, but how do I do such a thing with C? i.e. on click, the program runs 'apt-get install The other problem is I'm not familiar with the proper name for this interaction, so it is hard to search.   Hey guys, I am following the tutorial on PHP with MySQL. In that tutorial ebook, they recommend us to use commands to set password for the MySQL. The command goes something like this, "mysqladmin -u root -p status" Now, I am using Windows XP and whenever I enter the command, the dos screen flashes and terminates. I am unable to note down the results, so the question: is there any way to stop command prompt from terminating on Windows machine? Looking forward to hear from you guys, thank you!

  I got some pretty messy urls that i got via scraping here, problem is that they contain spaces or other special characters in the path and query string, here is some example http://www.example.com/some path/to the/file.html http://www.example.com/some path/?file=path to/file name.png&name=name.me so, is there an easy and robust way to escape the urls so that i can pass them to urlopen? i tried urlib.quote, but it seems to escape the '?', '&', and '=' in the query string as well, and it seems to escape the protocol as well, currently, what i am trying to do is use regex to separate the protocol, path name, and query string and escape them separately, but there are cases where they arent separated properly any advice is appreciated

  Hi, I have a "super" makefile which launches two "sub" make file: libwebcam: @echo -e "\nInvoking libwebcam make." $(MAKE) -C $(TOPDIR)/libwebcam uvcdynctrl: @echo -e "\nInvoking uvcdynctrl make." $(MAKE) -C $(TOPDIR)/uvcdynctrl uvcdynctrl uses libwebcam... I noticed that those two builds are launched as separate threads by make ! Thus sometimes the lib is not available when uvcdynctrl starts being built, and I get errors. By default, make should not launch commands as threads since this is available only through -j (number of jobs) and, according to the make manual, there is no thread by default. I run this on an Ubuntu. Did someone face the same issue ? Apple92

• Throwing special type of exception to terminate unit test

  Assume I want to write a unit test to test a particular piece of functionality that is implemented within a method. If I wanted to execute the method completely, I would have to do some extra set up work (mock objects expectations etc.). Instead of doing that I use the following approach: - I set up the expectations I'm interested in verifying and then make the tested method throw a special type of exception (e.g. TerminateTestException). - Further down in the unit test I catch the exception and verify the mock object expectations. It works fine but I'm not sure it is good practice. I do not do this regularly, only in cases where it saves me time and effort. One thing that comes to mind as an argument against using this is that throwing exceptions takes long time so the tests execute slower than if I used a different approach.

• Is there any special tool for interactive GUI development

  Hi, Currently I am preparing exercises about networks and mobile communications for students. I was thinking about creating an interactive user-interface which enables the user to drag&drop predefined elements and then implement a logic based upon element distances etc. An example would be to place two base stations (a predefined element with several properties), set the scale in the interface and then check the signal interferrence in the environment (user-interface). The first part might be too abstract whereas the example might be too specific, but I was wondering whether there already exists any friendly framework or language which enables developers to create interactive interfaces (for teaching/learning purpouses) in short ammount of time. Usually I write applications for PC environment in .NET but in this case it would take too much time to create a specific interface for every exercise. I would appreciate if anyone could suggest any way to create interactive user-interface in short ammount of time. Are there any special programming languages or development tools for this kind of applications or are there any useful frameworks for .NET, Java or any other language to speed up the development of user-interfaces?   Hello, I am trying to find every "a - b, c, d" pattern in an input string. The pattern I am using is the following : "^[ \t]*(\\w+)[ \t]*->[ \t]*(\\w+)((?:,[ \t]*\\w+)*)$" This pattern is a C# pattern, the "\t" refers to a tabulation (its a single escaped litteral, intepreted by the .NET String API), the "\w" refers to the well know regex litteral predefined class, double escaped to be interpreted as a "\w" by the .NET STring API, and then as a "WORD CLASS" by the .NET Regex API. The input is : a -> b b -> c c -> d The function is : private void ParseAndBuildGraph(String input) { MatchCollection mc = Regex.Matches(input, "^[ \t]*(\\w+)[ \t]*->[ \t]*(\\w+)((?:,[ \t]*\\w+)*)$", RegexOptions.Multiline); foreach (Match m in mc) { Debug.WriteLine(m.Value); } } The output is : c -> d Actually, there is a problem with the line ending "$" special char. If I insert a "\r" before "$", it works, but I thought "$" would match any line termination (with the Multiline option), especially a \r\n in a Windows environment. Is it not the case ?

• Cygwin Cruisecontrol cannot execute commands

  I'm having what I hope to be a simple problem. However, it's had me stumped all day. I'm working with cruisecontrol in windows, being set up through Cygwin. I have some CC experience in the linux platform and much of what I'm doing is very similar. However, most any command I try to execute in the config.xml file's Schedule section is giving an error. Here's the exception: ExecBuilder - Could not execute command: /cygdrive/d/Program\ Files/Subversion/bin/svn net.sourceforge.cruisecontrol.CruiseControlException: Encountered an IO exception while attempting to execute 'net.sourceforge.cruisecontrol.builders.ExecScript@b80f1c'. CruiseControl cannot continue. at net.sourceforge.cruisecontrol.builders.ScriptRunner.runScript(ScriptRunner.java:133) Here are some examples of commands I've tried to run which give this type of error. <exec command="${CCLoc}/projects/${project.name}/IOSdllScript"/> -Runs a script that I tested outside of the cruisecontrol.bat and it runs. Includes #!/bin/sh as the first line <exec command="${CCLoc}/projects/${project.name}/EmptyFile"/> -Essentially an empty text file, proving that the problem had nothing to do with my script. <exec command="/cygdrive/d/Program\ Files/Subversion/bin/svn" args="cleanup" workingdir="${svndir}"/> -Trys svn cleanup on a directory. I double checked the pathing and spelling. One command that I tested worked and didn't give this error. That command was touch. <exec command="touch" args="ABC.txt"/> I'm not sure why only touch seems to work and nothing else does. Thank you for your help.

• latin1/unicode conversion problem with ajax request and special characters

  Server is PHP5 and HTML charset is latin1 (iso-8859-1). With regular form POST requests, there's no problem with "special" characters like the em dash (–) for example. Although I don't know for sure, it works. Probably because there exists a representable character for the browser at char code 150 (which is what I see in PHP on the server for a literal em dash with ord). Now our application also provides some kind of preview mechanism via ajax: the text is sent to the server and a complete HTML for a preview is sent back. However, the ordinary char code 150 em dash character when sent via ajax (tested with GET and POST) mutates into something more: %E2%80%93. I see this already in the apache log. According to various sources I found, e.g. http://www.tachyonsoft.com/uc0020.htm , this is the UTF8 byte representation of em dash and my current knowledge is that JavaScript handles everything in Unicode. However within my app, I need everything in latin1. Simply said: just like a regular POST request would have given me that em dash as char code 150, I would need that for the translated UTF8 representation too. That's were I'm failing, because with PHP on the server when I try to decode it with either utf8_decode(...) or iconv('UTF-8', 'iso-8859-1', ...) but in both cases I get a regular ? representing this character (and iconv also throws me a notice: Detected an illegal character in input string ). My goal is to find an automated solution, but maybe I'm trying to be überclever in this case? I've found other people simply doing manual replacing with a predefined input/output set; but that would always give me the feeling I could loose characters. The observant reader will note that I'm behind on understanding the full impact/complexity with things about Unicode and conversion of chars and I definitely prefer to understand the thing as a whole then a simply manual mapping. thanks
