• Kubuntu 12.04 - Touchpad and keyboard stopped working at random

  As in the title, I've got this problem with my Kubuntu 12.04. At first I've thought that the whole system was hung, but it happened again 5 minutes ago and, while the keyboard and the touchpad stopped working, the music was still playing, so I guess that's just an "input" problem, because the system was still working! Any solution? Is there some data that you need to know about my setup?   So I'm going to be creating a phone app + website that will need to utilize a web service. Webservices are completely outside my domain so I'm not entirely sure where to start. Does anybody have any suggestions on the technology stack I should use? (mainly in terms of ease of use and reliability) So far what I've looked at are: RoR Python + Django + TastyPie Python + Flask Microsoft WCF 3.5 PHP + some framework I would rather not do anything with Java I'm leaning towards the Python + Django + TastyPie route as it seems like it would be easy to get up and going and learn in general. My only concern with it is the reliability of the libraries (feature breaking updates, abandonment, etc). Also I would prefer to create the website with the same framework so I wouldn't have to deal with learning and using two different ones. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

• prevent IE8 tabs from opening tabs in stack in taskbar

  This may have been asked before too... But, anyways. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, and IE 8, and have the taskbar in icon view. I'm not sure how to explain this, but I'm amazed at how each tab in IE8 seems to act like a new "process" in the taskbar (as if each tab was a window). Like... each tab acts like a different window in the taskbar although they are actually running in the same window. Now when I use IE 8 it looks (in the taskbar) like there's 15 windows open when in fact the taskbar is simply showing the 15 tabs. More simply put, it's displaying a "stack" for all of the tabs when I'd rather have the icon act like, for example, firefox so that a stack is only shown for the multiple windows. I know that they are meant to be running as separate processes to prevent crashing and the such... but is there a way to disable this strange "taskbar" effect? I'd rather have the taskbar show the main window and not the tabs individually. There has to be a simple way to do this...

• Why do my CouchDB databases grow so fast?

  I was wondering why my CouchDB database was growing to fast so I wrote a little test script. This script changes an attributed of a CouchDB document 1200 times and takes the size of the database after each change. After performing these 1200 writing steps the database is doing a compaction step and the db size is measured again. In the end the script plots the databases size against the revision numbers. The benchmarking is run twice: The first time the default number of document revision (=1000) is used (_revs_limit). The second time the number of document revisions is set to 1. The first run produces the following plot The second run produces this plot For me this is quite an unexpected behavior. In the first run I would have expected a linear growth as every change produces a new revision. When the 1000 revisions are reached the size value should be constant as the older revisions are discarded. After the compaction the size should fall significantly. In the second run the first revision should result in certain database size that is then keeps during the following writing steps as every new revision leads to the deletion of the previous one. I could understand if there is a little bit of overhead needed to manage the changes but this growth behavior seems weird to me. Can anybody explain this phenomenon or correct my assumptions that lead to the wrong expectations?

• Windows 7 doesn't show image size for all images

  On Windows 7's new file layout in Explorer. Some PNGs will show the size whereas others won't. I've tried rebooting and clearing the cache, but it doesn't work. Also, all of these images were saved with Paint.NET, so I am sure that the size isn't embeded in the file, and if it is, it appears that Windows doesn't go by it. The ones without sizes are 300x300. Is there a maximum size before it won't show the size anymore?
