  How do you decrease or shrink the size of a KVM virtual machine disk? I allocated a virtual disk of 500GB (stored at /var/lib/libvirt/images/vm1.img), and I'm finding that overkill, so now I'd like to free up some of that space for use with other virtual machines. There seems to be a lot answers on how to increase image storage, but not decrease it. I found the virt-resize tool, but it only seems to work with raw disk partitions, not disk images.

• ASP.NET Session State SQL Server 2008 R2 Freezes with High CPU Usage

  Our ASP.Net website uses SQL Server as the session state provider. We currently host the database on SQL Server 2005 since it does not play well on 2008 R2. We would like to know why, and how to fix it. hardware setup Our current session state server has SQL Server 2005 with the files hosted on a single local disk. It is one of our oldest servers since it has served us well, and we never felt the need to upgrade it. The database is about 2 GB holding 6000 sessions. (The sessions are a little big, but we need it.) We have another server with SQL Server 2008 R2 with a much faster CPU, much more RAM, and a much faster hard disk. situation One day, we have a huge surge in traffic. The transaction log growth on SQL Server freezes the server for 10's of seconds, allowing only a few requests through in minutes. So we load up the new server with ASPState with very large data and log files and point all of our applications to the new server. It chugs along fine for about 5 minutes, and then the CPU usage jumps up to 50% of the 16 cores that Standard Edition can use and freezes for 10's of seconds at a time. The files do not record any autogrowth events. The disk queue is nice and low. RAM usage is low. CPU usage on our old server has never been higher than 5%. What happened on the new server? Alternatively, I would like to hear success stories with ASP.NET session state server running on SQL Server 2008 R2 with an average write load of 30MB/sec with bursts up to 200MB/sec.

• Lingering tcp connection in LISTEN state

  My java application can sometimes be killed by an external script. This can be done either with SIGTERM or with SIGKILL. The application is a server which receives many connections per second, and it can be killed while trying to serve them. I would like to restart the application whenever it's killed, so I have prepared a script for that purpose. The problem is that, once the app has been killed, the new application instance can't bind to the port used by the previous instance, because the "Address is already in use". The previous instance's process has been definitely terminated, anyway the offending listening port is still there, but it is assigned to bash (or sh on other machines). Obviouly, my goal is to restart the application and let it bind successfully to the previous address. I've tried waiting more than 200 seconds before restarting to no avail, anyway I can't afford to wait that much. I've encountered this problem on all the machines I've ran the application (which is a jetty server with java 1.6). Any suggestion is appreciated, thanks, Silvio

  Hi all, I switch between my iMac and MacBook when working on my apps. I've always used my iMac to test the apps on the actual device, but I would like to be able to do this from both computers. I cannot seem to use the profile on my MacBook as it does not have the correct Certificate Signing Request in the KeyChain. Is there a way to copy these between machines and KeyChains? :)

• Can't start my Windows XP Virtual Machine: Insufficient Disk Space

  Okay, I currently have a server with two virtual machines installed on it, a CentOS5.4 and a Windows XP. I was remote desktopping the Windows XP chatting on IRC, and all of a sudden I lost connection. I checked with my HyperVisor and tried to restart it, and it won't start at all. It's giving me this error: Message from server0297.serverpool.gnet.ba: Failed to extend swap file (fileHandle 16414) from 0 KB to 524288 KB: No space left on device. Could not power on VM : No space left on device. Failed to power on VM info 4/17/2010 9:49:20 PM root Basically I bought the set up from a host, he installed the HyperVisor and the VirtualMachines, and honestly I don't really know what I'm doing. I've looked at some of the settings, and I can't figure it out. If you need any additional information, I'll try to provide it. The CentOS5.4 is still starting and working flawlessly, if that's relevant.

I don't have any experiences with Linux yet. so there're quite many questions to ask: What is the best Linux distro(s) for load-balancing? I plan to use VirtualPC to run some virtual machines.   Are there any comparisons between Hyper-V client machines and their physical equivalent? I've looked around and can find 4000 articles about improving Hyper-V performance, but I can't find any that actually do a side-by-side comparison or give benchmarking numbers. Ideally, I'm interested in a comparison of CPU, memory, disk, and graphics performance between something like the following: Some powerful workstation (with plenty of RAM) with Windows 7 installed on it directly Same exact worksation with Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (the bare Server role) and a full-screen Windows 7 client machine Virtual Server 2005 had performance that didn't compare at all with actual hardware, but with the advances in CPU and hardware-level virtualization, has performance improved significantly? How obvious would it be to a user of the two above scenarios that one of them was virtualized, and does anybody know of actual benchmarking of this type?

• moving to a new dedicated server and need advice on the new setup

  I currently have a dedicated server that we have outgrown and we are moving to another server. Our current setup was a 8gb W2008R2 server running a W2008R2 IIS virtual machine using VMWare. We are moving to a 2 cpu 24 gb server with W2012 R2 on Hyper-V. On our virtual machine we are running iis 7.5 and sql server. Sql Server seems to want to eat up all the memory so I had to cap it at 2gb, which doesn't seem sufficient. My question is, when I move the virtual machine to the new server, should I create 2 virtual machines, one for sql server and one for IIS? Or should I leave them both on the same virtual machine? Or even, put the Sql Server on the dedicated server and run the IIS in the vm? I'd like some input on how this should be done, I've not got the experience needed to make the right call. Thanks!

But I have difficulties to set these IPs on my VMs because they are on different network. my current server ip is xxx.xxx.18.6 with MASK : 255.255.255.224 and the GW is xxx.xxx.18.1 my new ip stack is xxx.xxx.168.176/29 I can use RRAS to achieve this.   I have a PC with Gigabyte H77 motherboard with Intel I5-3550 CPU 8 GB RAM 1600MHz and a 500GB Harddisk (7200RPM) - WD Sata III disk I wish to install esx on it and run some virtual machines on it. not alot, something like 2-3 VMs. My hardisk is Sata, is it possible to install ESX Server on it ? I am not worried about loading issues. When i try loading the installation it writes it cannot detect my disk (since its not SCSI disk). How can i bypass this ? or find a solution. thanks

But is it possible to use the monitor of my secondary machine as the secondary monitor of my primary? I am on XP so from what I understand I cannot just rdc from secondary to this primary. In any case that would be a different session altogether and I would prefer to be able to extend my desktop over the two monitors. Any solutions or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

What can I do to solve this problem? my ip is unassigned and only set on vm and use bridge network mode.and gw,mask,dns is set.but not ping. i set this ip on host and without problems is worked, But I do not know why on vm not worked. my host OS Is Windows Server 2003 and firewall is off and RRAs(routing and remote access) For VPN service is Enable. • Recommendations for a cloud/hosted server environment that can run different Windows VMs?

  I currently have a colocated Win 2008 server that I use for hosting different windows VMs for testing: Win 2008, Win XP, Vista, Win7, Win 2000. I'd like to ditch the server and use something like Amazone AWS but the key thing is I need to be able to launch VMs for these different windows versions. AWS doesn't allow this currently. Can anyone recommend somewhere that I could use? The main reasons I want to get away from my own server are: administration: backup, windows updates, etc space: disk limitations mean I can't have all the VMs I want. I'd like to be able to pay for space incrementally. I'll typically only run 1-3 at a time but want lots of snapshots of different machines.

  I'd like to use m0n0wall inside a (VirtualBox) VM to play about with and see what it can do. Ultimately the goal is to have a number of virtual machines connected to a internal virtual network which goes through to the m0n0wall VM, and then the m0n0wall box connected to the internet through NAT or a bridged addaptor on my host machine. I can find out how to set the LAN and WAN addresses, but this seems to be only for using m0n0wall as a router intead of attached to another router. Let's see if I can diagram this: [Virtual Machine]---Internal (VM Only) Network ---[m0n0wall VM]---Bridged/NAT Addaptor---["real" router]---Internet. Can anybody suggest how I should do this or am I thinking m0n0wall isn't meant to be used like this?

• How to manage large number of desktop VMs?

  I'm looking at the feasibility of providing remote access to multiple virtual machines. The VMs themselves will provide user desktops. To make best use of the available resources, I'd like the VMs to hibernate when the user disconnects. Which implies being able to start them up when a user connects. Ideally each user would 'own' a VM image - but if not then I'd require that the session was terminated. Obviously this would require the remote access protocol to be tied into the VM management. Is there anything out there to provide such functionality? (extra credit for open protocols! ;)

  I am using Virtual Machine software (VirtualBox) to learn Windows Server 2008 R2 Network Infrastructure (70-642). Trouble is - I'm learning at an extremely slow pace and so the trial periods of my virtual machines are close to running out. If I delete the VMs then install WS2008R2 from scratch on new VMs is that violating the acceptable use policy of Microsoft? I am aware that I can extend the trial, but it seems I can only do that by 10 days at a time. Also I think having to re-install from scratch is a good way to reinforce the knowledge.

• Running Debian as a Virtual Machine Host

  I have a need to run a linux server to host subversion, bugzilla over Apache and also act as a file and print server. I also have a need to host Windows Server 2008 virtual machines for development purposes (I'm a .NET guy). The machine I have is a dual core AMD 2.5 Ghz w/2GB RAM. So here are my questions: 1) Should I run Debian (or some other distro) as the base AND create a Debian VM to host subversion, bugzilla and be my file/print server? or is it ok to use Debian as both my VM host and for those other reasons? 2) VMWare has a free server edition, Virtual Box also is another free option. Which one of these is better suited for what I need to do? Are there any other free (or inexpensive) alternatives out there? 3) Will I need a GUI with Debian in order to manage my VMs? 4) Can I run VMs without a GUI to conserve system resources?
