  • Draggable & Resizable Editors

    Thanks to a cool tip from Steven Yi (here in the comments to a blog entry), I was able to make a totally pointless but fun set of draggable and resizable editors: What you see above are two JEditorPanes within JPanels. The JPanels are within ComponentWidgets provided by the NetBeans Visual Library, which is also where the special border comes from. The ComponentWidgets are within a Visual Library Scene, which is within a JScrollPane in a TopComponent. Each editor has this, which means the NetBeans Java Editor is bound to the JEditorPane: jEditorPane1.setContentType("text/x-java"); EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/x-java"); jEditorPane1.setEditorKit(kit); jEditorPane1.getDocument().putProperty("mimeType", "text/x-java"); A similar thing is done in the other JEditorPane, i.e., it is bound to the XML Editor. While the XML Editor also has code completion, in addition to syntax coloring, as can be seen above, this is not the case for the JEditorPane bound to the Java Editor, since the JEditorPane doesn't have a Java classpath, which is needed for Java code completion to work.

  • Java JRE 7 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

    Java Runtime Environment 7u10 (a.k.a. JRE 1.7.0_10 build 18) and later updates on the JRE 7 codeline are now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12 Windows-based desktop clients. What do you need to do and where are the official patch requirements?   • Ubuntu 10.04 with HD flash

    Just noticed that 10.04 is out. My media server has been packed away for a few months but I might dust if off and give 10.04 a shot but I thought I'd see if anyone has any success stories with HD flash in either Chrome or Firefox. I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.10 and it was a large enough pain to get VDPAU working with my Zotac Ion-ITX-C board (eventually found an mplayer PPA that had it compiled in) From reading the 10.04 docs it looks like this is standard now, but I'm wondering about streaming HD, from, say flash or Divx. I've never been able to get HD flash to play without it being extremely choppy, and I chalk this up to the lack of hardware assisted decoding like VDPAU (a guess). My board certainly isn't a competitor in CPU power or memory, which is why i've needed the HW accelerated decoding for HD vids in the past. Just wondering if anyone has had any success stories playing HD vid online (flash, divx or what have you)

  • Synergy client drops and reconnects at UAC dialog

    I've been using Synergy for a while at work to connect my XP machine (the host) to my Win 7 laptop (the client). I previously was having issues with using Synergy and the UAC prompt, as described in this question, and have had no issues since, until recently. I upgraded to Synergy 1.4.10 and now am seeing odd behavior whenever a UAC prompt appears on my laptop. When the UAC prompt appears on my laptop, Synergy momentarily drops its connection to my laptop, causing my mouse and keyboard focus to revert to my host machine (the XP machine). After about a second or so, though, the connection gets re-established and I am able to type and use the mouse buttons in the UAC prompt. Once the prompt clears, the connection drops again for a second, and then gets re-established again. Is this something to do with configuration or perhaps should I just chalk it up to a change in behavior in version 1.4.10?

    I see people writing a function with FUNCTION instead "CREATE FUNCTION". When I saw this usage in the web I thought it was a typo or something. But in Oreilly's "Oracle 11g PL/SQL Programming" by Steven Feurenstein, the author had used the same thing. But I get errors when I execute that. Could somebody explain is it legal usage or not?.   • DIY Halloween Decoration Uses Simple Silohuettes

    While many of the Halloween decorating tricks we’ve shared over the years involve lots of wire, LEDs, and electronic guts, this one is thoroughly analog (and easy to put together). A simple set of silhouettes can cheaply and quickly transform the front of your house. Courtesy of Matt over at GeekDad, the transformation is easy to pull off. He explains: It’s really just about as simple as you could hope for. The materials needed are: black posterboard or black-painted cardboard; colored cellophane or tissue paper; and tape. The only tools needed are: measuring tape; some sort of drawing implement — chalk works really well; and scissors and/or X-Acto knife. And while you need some drawing talent, the scale is big enough and the need for precision little enough that you don’t need that much.   • ORA-00900 Super Easy Fix (for some cases)

    Here is a really easy fix for some ORA-00900 errors. Well at least the one I saw the other day. This was something that I did not come across when searching either. I found lots of other ideas on what the problem might be but not the fix. Since I am fairly new to PL/SQL (TSQL only for a long time) this one stumped me for a while. Until I asked someone and they saw the error in about two seconds. When using the Command Window to add a view I was receiving an ORA-00900 error. So I checked that everything the view was referencing was there and that the permissions looked OK. The code for the view was fairly simple and it ran just fine in a regular SQL Window. It ended up that the Command Window did not like the space I had between the list of items in the select before the from. Bad: col1,col2,                               <--- does not like the empty linefrom tblSomething Good: col1,col2,from tblSomething I will just chalk that up to my familiarity with PL/SQL.   • Creating a multi-column rollover image gallery with HTML 5

    I know it has been a while since I blogged about HTML 5. I have two posts in this blog about HTML 5. You can find them here and here.I am creating a small content website (only text,images and a contact form) for a friend of mine.He wanted to create a rollover gallery.The whole concept is that we have some small thumbnails on a page, the user hovers over them and they appear enlarged on a designated container/placeholder on a page. I am trying not to use Javascript scripts when I am using effects on a web page and this is what I will be doing in this post.  Well some people will say that HTML 5 is not supported in all browsers. That is true but most of the modern browsers support most of its recommendations. For people who still use IE6 some hacks must be devised.Well to be totally honest I cannot understand why anyone at this day and time is using IE 6.0.That really is beyond me.Well, the point of having a web browser is to be able to ENJOY the great experience that the WE? offers today.  Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr.In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like.You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. You can download it here. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be ) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor.For the people who are not convinced yet that they should invest time and resources on becoming experts on HTML 5 I should point out that HTML 5 websites will be ranked higher than others. Search engines will be able to locate better the content of our site and its relevance/importance since it is using semantic tags. Let's move now to the actual hands-on example. In this case (since I am mad Liverpool supporter) I will create a rollover image gallery of Liverpool F.C legends. I create a folder in my desktop. I have tested the page with IE 10 and the latest versions of Opera,Chrome and Firefox.Feel free to style your HTML 5 gallery any way you want through the magic of CSS.I did not bother adding background colors and borders because that was beyond the scope of this post.   • ADO Entity Framework 4 to WPF Datagrid. DatagridComboBox nightmare.

    The WPF datagrid -seems- like it's going to work, but the combobox implementation does not work straight from the designer. So I'm left wandering around in the XAML randomly changing things trying to get it to work. The problems are numerous. I want to display a foreign key relationship (with drop down) instead of a bunch of numbers for a selection. It seems like it shouldn't be this hard. I can get the right values to show up (their description instead of an ID), but the table freaks out thinking that all the values have been modified. If I select a drop down, it refuses to allow me to edit anything else. I want to chalk this up as a .NET bug, but since I'm new to WPF datagrids, it's probably just me.   • RubyQt Crashing on QTableWidget

    I'm getting some weirdness with QtRuby when using a TableWidget. The table widget loads, but when you click on the elements in the row, the app segfaults and crashes. require 'Qt4' class SimpleModel < Qt::AbstractTableModel def rowCount(parent) return 1 end def columnCount(parent) return 1 end def data(index, role=Qt::DisplayRole) return Qt::Variant.new("Really Long String") if index.row == 0 and index.column == 0 and role == Qt::DisplayRole return Qt::Variant.new end end Qt::Application.new(ARGV) do Qt::TableWidget.new(1, 1) do set_model SimpleModel.new show end exec end The backtrace seems to imply that it is bombing in mousePressEvent #6 0x01624643 in QAbstractItemView::pressed(QModelIndex const&) () from /usr/lib/libQtGui.so.4 #7 0x016306f5 in QAbstractItemView::mousePressEvent(QMouseEvent*) () from /usr/lib/libQtGui.so.4 If I override mousePressEvent and mouseMoveEvent, these kinds of crashes no longer happen. Am I doing something wrong over here, or can I chalk this up as a bug in QtRuby? I'm on fedora11, with the following packages installed: QtRuby-4.4.0-1.fc11.i586 ruby-1.8.6.369-1.fc11.i586 These crashes also happen when running the script on Windows.

  • Upgrade OpenSSL 0.9.8k to OpenSSL 1.0.1c on Ubuntu 10.04

    We're currently using Ubuntu 10.04 and based on the PCI Compliance results, we're told to upgrade our OpenSSL. I attempted to do this using this reference: http://sandilands.info/sgordon/upgrade-latest-version-openssl-on-ubuntu and http://www.lunarforums.com/dedicated_web_hosting_at_lunarpages/upgrading_openssl-t35015.0.html Unfortunately, they didn't work for me. And when I attempted to remove the old version prior to installation, it looks like it broke a few thins in the system. The article from Steve Gordon seemed like it would work for me, but when I ran the openssl version command, it still read that it was the old version. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I should do. Fix: After following the steps from Steven Gordon, make sure you restart apache and / or restart your computer (I did both, but I'm sure a simple restart will fix it right up).

    hey all, first question... we have around 30 servers in an Active Directory environment with 600 student computers and 100 staff desktops with XP SP2/3, the win server 2003 has the staff home drives on a NAS and in the last few days after some server updates is now mapping home drives to the \servername\home instead of \severname\home\%username%, its simple to re map the network drive but is annoying. we dont use login script to map home drive but use a VB script for other network drives and if we add the home drive mapping to that it works, but shouldnt the profile option in users AD account map that correctly? which do you all recommend, AD profile mapping or VB Script mapping Home drives? thanks Steven

  • How can I make sharepoint use a small URL (e.g. http://internal.com instead of http://internal.com/sites/osfc/Pages/Default.aspx)

    Hi all, I'm new to sharepoint 2007, currently the home page is htp://internal.com/sites/osfc/Pages/Default.aspx but I would like to use htp://internal.com or have htp://internal.com redirect to the long URL. How can I do this? I thought of using a 301 redirect but the permissions on the site in IIS don't allow users to view files placed in the root and I don't want to mess with the permissions. Currently if I visit http://internal.com I see a sharepouint Access Denied page (htp://internal.com/_layouts/AccessDenied.aspx?Source=%2f). Note: I've used htp:// above as serverfault doesn't allow more than 1 https:// link. Many thanks Steven

  • Looking for good Regex book

    I've been trying to get a good grounding with Regular Expressions, and am looking for a single book to do so. I've been going through Amazon.com's listings on this subject, and I've identified a few possibilities, but am unsure which would be best for a C# developer who can write very simple Regexs, but wants to learn more. On a scale of 0-9 where 0 is knowing how to spell "Regex" but nothing else, and 9 where I could write a book on the subject out of my own head, I would place myself at 2. Which of the following would be your choice: Mastering Regular Expressions by Jeffrey E F Friedl Regular Expressions Cookbook by Jan Goyvaerts and Steven Levithan Sams Teach Yourself Regular Expressions in 10 Minutes by Ben Forta Beginning Regular Expressions (Programmer to Programmer) by Andrew Watt Regular Expression Recipes for Windows Developers: A Problem-Solution Approach by Nathan A. Good Regular Expression Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach by Nathan A. Good Now, according to Amazon, "Regular Expressions Cookbook" (REC) above is rated the highest according to user ratings, but only based on 20 reviews. The first one, "Mastering Regular Expressions" (MRE) is rated second based on 140 reviews. This alone suggests that MRE might be by far the best one. But is it best for a relative beginner? Would I perhaps be better getting "Beginning Regular Expressions" (BRE) instead, to start with? Please help me resolve my confusion!

  • LLBLGen Pro and JSON serialization

So I'll post the reply here as a quote and reply on it. 'Steven' asks: What would the future be for LLBLGen Pro to support JSON for serialization? Would it be worth the effort for a LLBLGenPro user to bother creating some code templates to produce additional JSON serializable classes? Or just create some basic POCO classes which could be used for exchange of client/server data and use DTO to map these back to LLBGenPro ones? If I understand the work around, it is at the expense of losing xml serialization. Well, as described in the previous post, to enable JSON serialization, you can do that with a couple of lines and some attribute assignments. However, indeed, the attributes might make the XML serialization not working, as described in the previous blogpost. This is the case if the service you're using serializes objects using the DataContract serializer: this serializer will give up to serialize the entity objects to XML as the entity objects implement IXmlSerializable and this is a no-go area for the DataContract serializer. However, if your service doesn't use a DataContract serializer, or you serialize the objects manually to Xml using an xml serializer, you're fine. When you want to switch to Xml serializing again, instead of JSON in WebApi, and you have decorated the entity classes with the data-contract attributes, you can switch off the DataContract serializer, by setting a global configuration setting: var xml = GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Formatters.XmlFormatter; xml.UseXmlSerializer = true; This will make the WebApi use the XmlSerializer, and run the normal IXmlSerializable interface implementation.
