  If you have a web page served from https://mydumbwebsite.com, and it has an iframe in it that serves from https://subdomain.mydumbwebsite.com, should I expect a significant number of browsers (like 1% of the current browsers in use) to show a security warning? Please don't guess at this. I would like an answer based on real-world experience, if possible.

  Hi all, After hours of reading about and experimenting with DNS records I can access my Google app engine app via these URLs: myappid.appspot.com www.myappid.myowndomain.com What does not work: myowndomain.com www.myowndomain.com I want to be able to serve my app directly off my domain and not a subdomain.   I have SSL enabled for subdomain.mydomain.com so I can access files via https://subdomain.mydomain.com. Now please tell me if I'm right.. if I have file somwhere in subdomain.mydomain.com called index.php I can securely access it via: https://subdomain.mydomain.com/someFolder/index.php but I can also access it via http://subdomain.mydomain.com/someFolder/index.php This time communication won't be encrypted though. So now it comes down to links only if I access files in subdomain.mydomain.com securely or not? I will have another related question (and many more probably), but will post it as separate topic to keep things clean :)

  My website has an SSL cert (example url: https://subdomain.example.com). Under Apache it's set up for both port 80 and port 443. So under the following configuration, anyone who goes to http://subdomain.example.com is sent to https://subdomain.example.com . But for visits from Internet Explorer, the redirect doesn't happen. Instead, http visits get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page." with a list of client-side solutions to try. Any ideas on how to fix the config so IE visits have the same behavior as the other browsers (that is, send http to https automatically)?   I have a main domain being hosted through CPanel. I also have a sub-domain that I would like to appear as a path under the main domain instead of as a sub-domain. So I have: http://example.com/ pointing to the main hosted file. http://example.com/mydir pointing to the subdomain files. This is achieved by a httpd.conf include from the main domain section to set an alias: alias /mydir /path/to/subdomain/files/ Now, that works fine so far. The problem is that if a .htaccess file under /path/to/the/subdomain/files/ contains an error, the alias is completely skipped, and /mydir goes instead to the main host files. That is kind of surprising to me - I would expect an error to return an error instead. Now the killer: if I try to password protect /path/to/subdomain/files/, then trying to access http://example.com/mydir will again attempt to deliver from under the main hosted files and not from /path/to/subdomain/files/ I am not seeing any errors reported on the .htaccess file in the apache error log, so I am assuming the .htaccess is valid: AuthUserFile /path/to/valid/readable/.htpasswd AuthName "Secure Access" AuthType Basic Require valid-user This kind of behaviour does not seem right to me. Is there something obvious that could be causing it? Or is this just the way it works? Perhaps using an alias is the wrong way to go?

• How can I use VirtualDocumentRoot to serve the www subdomain with SSL enabled?

  I am able to serve http://www.domain.com and http://domain.com. Also https://domain.com works fine too. But not https://www.domain.com for some reason this doesn't work. I even created a www.domain.com in my sites-availible folder and also enabled it. I reloaded the configuration and yet it still doesn't work.   If I do an nslookup on youtube.com, no problem, if I do one with www.youtube.com, failure. See details below. If I do the same from a Windows machine its fine, its when I do it from a Mac workstation that I get the issue. I have rebooted, both server and workstation, I did a changeip, but nothing is working. Any recommendations?

• Can't get subdomain to point to working collabNet server - what am I doing wrong?

  Hello everyone, I am running a web server using CollabNet SubVersion EDGE. You can view it at 71.13.105DOT51 I also run another website, http://www.tutorialcraft.com. I went into my Cpanel, and created a DNS record as follows: svn.tutorialcraft.com. 14400 IN A 71.13.105.51 Yet, if you go to http://svn.tutorialcraft.com, it doesn't load. I tested to see if I was doing some wrong, so I created a ebay.tutorialcraft.com and pointed it to eBay servers, and it worked fine (it's not up now). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks UPDATE NOTES: I tried to point svn.tutorialcraft.com to my original IP address (the one that www.tutorialcraft.com is pointed to, and it still won't load. Also, may be worthy of note, I am running a wordpress multi-site server, and I have disabled blog redirection. • How to configure a static wildcard subdomain with dnsmasq.

  I have a network behind a NAT with a few machines. The machines are: router - NAT, dnsmasq, forwarding - directly connected to the inet server - which runs ssh, www and some other stuff clients - which do stuff on server I also have mydomain.com. server.mydomain.com is pointing to my connection's IP (single IP), which is the router, which forwards ports to server. Server, has a httpd running, which serves different sites based on vhosts. So I have site1.server.mydomain.com, site2.. The problem is that all the traffic is going thru the router, and when I check logs I always see the router's IP for everything (so it's hard to see who is running the script with the while(1)). I would just ServerAlias site1.server.local, but most of the sites have a root URL saved somewhere on top of which other URLs are built, so I can't do that. The solution for me would be telling dnsmasq somehow to answer to *.mydomain.com with server's IP. Is this possible somehow?

  I have 2 websites deployed in IIS 7.5 Express. The first website is the PRODUCTION website and the second is the TEST website. In the PRODUCTION website, I added an HTTPS binding and Require SSL so it is normal that it will force to redirect from HTTP to HTTPS. In the TEST website, I didn't add HTTPS binding and the Require SSL is disabled but I wonder why it still force to redirect from HTTP to HTTPS. Any idea why this happen? By the way, the PRODUCTION site uses the main domain (www.maindomain.com) and the TEST site uses only sub-domain (test.maindomain.com). I don't want the sub-domain to only use HTTP, not HTTPS.   Hi, I created a google app engine project. I just successfully mapped it to a new domain. The name of my project is "grape". So by default, it is published at http://www.grape.appspot.com. I mapped it to http://www.grape.com, which is terrific. Now I'd like to create a new app engine project, and have it mapped to: http://api.grape.com how do I go about doing this? I think it is possible, I'm just not sure where I would do this mapping? Since I own grape.com, I am hoping I can map a new project to t.   I’m using Google Analytics on a site — let’s call it www.domain.com. My Google Analytics website profile is for www.domain.com, and my only report is set up for www.domain.com. Requests to domain.com redirect permanently to www.domain.com. I’ve got the regular Analytics JavaScript on my index page for the domain. For some reason, it seems to be setting its cookies for domain.com instead of www.domain.com. This is unfortunate, as I’ve got cdn.domain.com set up as a CDN using Amazon Cloudfront, so I’d rather not have useless cookies (Analytics seems to set four cookies) cluttering up those requests. How can I make Analytics set cookies for www.domain.com instead of domain.com?

  I'm trying to do the following: get a cname setup so that *.subdomain.domain.com points to anotherdomain.com. Then in the anotherdomain.com DNS, I want to look for things like one.subdomain.domain.com and point it to another server and two.subdomain.domain.com pointed to a fourth server.   I want to make a virtual host in Apache with dynamic configuration for my websites. For example something like this would be perfect. <VirtualHost *:80> AssignUserId $domain webspaces ServerName $subdomain.$domain.$tld ServerAdmin admin@$domain.$tld DocumentRoot "/home/webspaces/$domain.$tld/subdomains/$subdomain" <Directory "/home/webspaces/$domain.$tld/subdomains/$subdomain"> .... </Directory> php_admin_value open_basedir "/tmp/:/usr/share/pear/:/home/webspaces/$domain.$tld/subdomains/$subdomain" </VirtualHost> $subdomain, $domain, $tld would be extracted from the HTTP_HOST variable using regex at request time. No more loads of configuration, no more apache reloading every x minutes, no more stupid logic. Notice that I use mpm-itk (AssignUserId directive) so each virtual host runs as a different user. I do not intend to change this part. Since now I have tried: - mod_vhost_alias but this allows dynamic configuration of only the document root. - mod_macro but this still requires the arguments of the vhost to be declared explicitly for each vhost. - I have read about mod_vhs and other modules which store configuration in a SQL or LDAP server which is not acceptable as there is no need for configuration! Those 3 necessary arguments can be generated at runtime. - I have seen some Perl suggestions like this, but as the author states $s->add_config would add a directive after every request, thus leading to a memory leak, and $r->add_config seems not to be a feasible solution.

  Hi! I have a machine running Apache with mod_proxy that I'm using to proxy a local Tomcat server running on another port. The problem is that Tomcat does not support wildcard sub-domains(whole reason for using apache/mod_proxy) and our app uses the subdomain to figure out what account the data should come from. So with that said, is there a way to pass the subdomain as a url parameter via mod_proxy? For example, I have this: ProxyPass / http://example.com:8080/ In a virtual host block and I can access the site from any subdomain.
