• Search for partial IP address using Windows Search?

  I have a folder, c:\projects\, added to Windows Index. I know the indexing is working because I search for stuff in this folder all the time and the results come up very fast, and I've never noticed any accuracy problem until now. (I have had to tweak Indexing options to expand which file types have their contents indexed rather than just the file name, etc, but after that Search has worked pretty well for me). I've encountered a problem while trying to search for references to a particular IP address subnet. I'm trying to find all references to IP's with the pattern "192.168.220.xxx" (AKA, the 192.168.220.0/24, AKA 192.168.220.0/255.255.255.0 IP/netmask). Within Windows Explorer: c:\projects**.* is indexed c:\projects\work\project1\network_list.txt contains several "192.168.220.xxx" IP's Indexing status says all items are indexed (193,000 items). When I try to search for partial IP match, there are no search results. Tried searching for: 192.168.220, 192.168, 192.168.220., 192.168.220., 192.168.220.?, 192.168.220.??, 192.168.220.???, 192.168., 192.168.. Also tried variants of all the above surrounded with double quotes. All the searches returned 0 results. Within MS Outlook 2007: My mailbox, and all my offline .pst's are indexed. I search in Outlook pretty frequently, so I'm pretty sure indexed searches work across inbox and all .pst's. Indexing status in Outlook says all items are indexed. I also have references to these IP's in email, and I'd like to find all of them. Basically same deal as above, can't search for "192.168.220.xxx" IP's. Any way to fix this?

• Setup 2003 R2 Radius server to work on vista/seven

  Hi All, I'm currently trying to configure my 2003 R2 server RADIUS module to enable WIFI client to authenticate throught my Active Directory. The RADIUS server use MS-CHAP V2 as encryption method. I got several Access Point running DD-WRT, configured to use WPA2-Enterprise security that use Radius Server. Everything is setup, and almost working. When I say almost working, I mean, I can login using my AD Credential on my IPod or even on a MacBook running OS X, Windows XP also work with some little tweak in connection properties. The problem is Windows Vista or Windows Seven clients computers that are not inside domain. It doesn't work at all, it doesn't even prompt for user/password/domain. I already install the patch for IAS to make the certsrv compatible with Vista and Seven, but still doesn't work. Anyone ever encounter the same issue I have right now? I'm searching for a solution to this for several already and still not find anything. Looks like many people have the same issue too. Thanks all for you eventual answers.

• Poor SSL performance with vsftpd

  I'm trying to tweak vsftpd to achieve maximum performance for my usage: I have only one or two clients that connect to the server. File size is between ~15MB and 1GB. Typical transfer batch represent between 1 and 2GB of data. For testing purposes, I'm using a tmpfs on both sides (thus eliminating any disks bottleneck) with a single 1GB file. When SSL is disabled, performance is good, with a transfer rate at ~120MB/s (reaching the limits of gigabit networking). With SSL enabled only for control traffic (and not data traffic), performance drops at about 112MB/s, which is still within the acceptable limits. However, when SSL is enabled for data flows, the transfer speed drops dramatically: 6.7MB/s using 3DES & SHA (ssl_ciphers=DES-CBC3-SHA in vsftpd.conf) 16MB/s using DES & SHA (ssl_ciphers=DES-CBC-SHA) I didn't tested other ciphers, but from what I can see from the CPU usage during the transfer, it seems that vsftpd is only using a single cpu/core per client. While this can fit for large ftp sites with hundreds of clients, I'd like to avoid this behavior and use more ressources on the server. On a side note, if you have any ideas regarding other openssl ciphers...

• VMWare converter performance

  Hello, I have a question about my test lab. It's more to understand the concept more than apply this into production: I have an ESXi with few VMs linux/windows configured and I'd like to use VMWare converter to create backups. To speedup the process I decided to create a Windows VM on the same ESXi host where I've installed Windows 7 and VMWare Converter. The Host has a gigabit card but it's currently connected to a 100Mb FD port. Windows 7 sees a 1gb card connected. When I do the backup using VMWare converter I specify the host IP as source and destination, so I thought the copy could be faster then use my laptop across the network. Well, to cut a long sotry short: I get dreadful performance (4Mb/sec). I'm a buit confused on this because despite the fact that the host is running 100Mb communication between VMs and hosts shouldn't (correct me if I'm wrong) have any limitation instead. I did tweak windows 7 to optimise network performane but I got just a little improvement. i still need 4 hours to back up a 50Gb (thin) VM. Additionally I wanted to ask: Would jumbo frame help in this? I know that jumbo frame have to be supported end to end, and the network switch where the host is currently connected doesn't support this, but I was wondering: 1) Does ESXi host support jumbo frames at all? 2) Can I enable it somehow? 3) If I do so, I guess bulk transfert between VMs and host would improve, but would this affect the communication going through the real switch as this doesn't do jumbo? • Is there any way to synchronize Outlook RSS Feeds with BlackBerry?

  Does anyone know how I can view the contents of my Outlook 2007 RSS Feeds from a corporate-issued BlackBerry? Our Inbox and Calendar are already integrated with corporate exchange servers but it looks like nobody cares too much about the RSS Feeds. Is there some setting on my Blackberry or in Outlook I could possibly tweak to include these updates? I know there are many standalone RSS readers available for blackberry (Google Reader for example) but I mention Outlook RSS Feeds specifically in my question because I am subscribing to a number of RSS feeds I've setup on my intranet for various version control systems that would be inaccessible to an external RSS reader. It seems like I might have to setup some sort of email commit notifications if I want anything from my blackberry but I much prefer the 'pull' method of an RSS feed viewer over receiving streams of emails. Please feel free to suggest any alternatives! Edit: I've additionally tried moving my "SVN Repository" folder directly into my Mailbox instead of keeping it as a child of the RSS Feeds folder. This allows me to view the SVN Repository folder on my blackberry where previously the RSS Feeds folder and all children were hidden but unfortunately it never seems to get populated with the items that are displaying in Outlook. I've even made a fresh commit to make sure that the SVN Repository folder still works correctly in Outlook from outside the RSS Feeds folder but no luck on the BlackBerry end of things. • Control Panel as menu includes a blank item

  When viewed as a menu attached to the Start Menu in Windows 7 Ultimate x64, the Control Panel contains a blank item. It looks like this: This item cannot be deleted or removed. I also cannot create a shortcut to it. No error message is displayed, instead simply nothing happens. I've tried using Shell Object Editor (using Run as Administrator) to find out if there is an errant entry on the Control Panel, but many entries (almost two dozen) are blank. There are several valid entries as well. I've looked through the registry and through C:\Windows, \system32, and \SysWOW64 but have had no success. I looked at this question, but I am not using Windows XP and thus have no option to use Tweak UI's Rebuild Icons function. Please note that this is no empty entry in the Control Panel when opened normally, only when attached to the Start Menu as a menu. I have compared the list of entries on the attached menu to the normal Control Panel and other than the blank entry, they are exactly the same. Nothing is missing from one or the other. I've also compared the menu and the normal view to reference images and lists of Control Panel items and have found no irregularities. Is anyone familiar with this problem or know of a solution? I've performed virus and malware scans and found nothing. I've used CCleaner with no change. Nothing with Shell Object Editor. Nothing with Registry Editor. Certainly someone here knows how to fix this. My only guess is the many blank entries visible in Shell Object Editor, but I am reluctant to delete that many items without further analysis and guidance. I appreciate your time and consideration.

• How to pass alias through sudo

  I have an alias that passes in some parameters to a tool that I use often. Sometimes I run as myself, sometimes under sudo. Unfortunately, of course, sudo doesn't recognise the alias. Does anyone have a hint on how to pass the alias through? In this case, I have a bunch of options for perl when I'm debugging: alias pd='perl -Ilib -I/home/myuser/lib -d' Sometimes, I have to debug my tools as root, so, instead of running: pd ./mytool --some params I need to run it under sudo. My last resort is to put it into a shell script and put that somewhere that sudo will be able to find. But aliases are soooo handy sometimes, so it is a last resort.

  My shared host suspended my website stating system overload, so I moved my website to a VPS which has 4GB RAM. But for some reason the website has become very slow. • How can I make Internet Explorer 6 render Web pages like Internet Explorer 11?

  Now, I know that this may seem like a bad question in that I can just upgrade to Internet Explorer 8, but I am sticking with IE6 in that IE8 removes valuable features, like the ability to save favorites offline and the fact that a file path turns into a Windows Explorer window and typing a Web address into Windows Explorer changes it into an IE window. I know that Internet Explorer 6 does a really bad job at rendering some pages. I know of the Google Chrome Frame extension that brings Chrome-style rendering into IE, but that will soon be discontinued. So, I tried another thing: I know that C:\Windows\System32\mshtml.dll contains the Trident rendering engine that is used by IE, so I tried something: I first backed up the original file by renaming it on Windows XP to mshtml-old.dll, then I tried to copy in the DLL from a computer running Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 10. I noticed that, after copying, the system had replaced the new DLL with the old one, but left the one I backed up intact. Is there any way I can get the system to not replace the DLL like that so that I can transfer in IE11's mshtml.dll into Windows XP and make IE6 render like IE11? I'm looking for an answer that describes how to tweak my system to make IE6 render like IE11 (or IE10), not one that tells me to upgrade IE or install another browser. I don't care how tedious the method is, just as long as it works.

• Colorizing your terminal and shell environment?

  I spend most of my time working in Unix environments and using Terminal emulators. I try to use color on the commandline, because color makes the output more useful and intuitive. What are some good ways to add color to my terminal environment? What tricks do you do? What pitfals have you encountered? Unfortunately, support for color is wildly variable depending on terminal type, OS, TERM setting, utility, buggy implementations, etc. Here's what I do currently, after alot of experimentation: I tend to set 'TERM=xterm-color', which is supported on most hosts (but not all). I work on a number of different hosts, different OS versions, etc. I'm trying to keep things simple and generic, if possible. Many OSs set things like 'dircolors' and by default, and I don't want to modify this everywhere. So I try to stick with the defaults. Instead tweak my Terminal's color configuration. Use color for some unix commands (ls, grep, less, vim) and the Bash prompt. These commands seem to the standard "ANSI escape sequences" I've managed to find some settings which are widely supported, and which don't print gobbledygook characters in older environments (even FreeBSD4!) (For the most part). • Windows 7, going crazy with environment variables

  So, I am trying to learn java. I installed the JDK and proceeded to write a few programs. Each time, I have to give the path to javac.exe to compile the .java file. SO, I decided to tweak the %PATH% variable. And no matter what I change it to, it doesn't work. when I do an echo %PATH%, I get 'Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. What would I use for ffmpeg switches such that all the video settings and codec remain the same, but only the audio codec and settings change? • VPN sharing on Mac OS X 10.5 machine

  I have a rather weird problem. I want to share a VPN connection that has been established by my Mac OS X 10.5 computer with another machine in my network. This is what I did: In the /etc/hostcongig file on the main computer I added the line: IPFORWARDING=-YES- I assigned a fixed IP address to my computer (192.168.178.30), a fixed one to the other machine (192.168.178.60) and my computer's IP address as gateway on the other machine. I connected to my VPN using the internal Mac OS X VPN client (PPTP connection) I run this script: #!/bin/sh natd -same_ports -use_sockets -unregistered_only -dynamic -interface ppp0 -clamp_mss ipfw -f flush ipfw add divert natd ip from any to any via ppp0 ipfw add pass all from any to any sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1 Source: Using (and sharing) a VPN connection on your Mac Now everthing works smootly, however speed is an issue. I get 1,8 MBit/s on my main machine and only 0,3 - 0,6 MBit/s on the other one. My question: What could possibly be wrong? Do I have to tweak MTU settings, is there any packet inspection ongoing that needs time....? Any help appreciated!

• VLAN Tagging Traffic on Cisco Switch

  I have a situation where I'm setting up multiple VLANS on a pfSense firewall on the same physical interface for a client. So in pfSense, I now have VLAN 100 (employees) and VLAN 200 (students - student computer lab). Downstream from pfSense, I have a Cisco SG200 switch, and coming off of the SG200 is the student lab (running on a Catalyst 2950. Yes, that's old, but it works, and this is a poor nonprofit we're talking about). What I'd like to do is tag everything on the network as VLAN 100, except for the student computer lab. Earlier today when I was on-site with the client, I went into to the old Catalyst 2950, and assigned all of its ports to access VLAN 200 (switchport mode access vlan 200) without setting up a trunk on the Catalyst or on the SG200. Looking back on it, I now understand why internet in the lab broke. I reverted the lab back to the default VLAN1 (we're still running on a different firewall - we haven't deployed pfSense -, and the traffic is still separated physically). So my question is, what do I need to do in order to properly deploy this scenario? I believe the correct answer is: Ensure VLANs 100 and 200 are setup in pfSense, and that DHCP is operating correctly (on separate subnets) Setup a trunkport VLAN that allows both 100 & 200 traffic, and plug that port directly into pfSense. Setup a VLAN 200 trunkport on the SG200 (It's not running iOS, but if it were, the command would be switchport trunk native vlan 200), which will then plug into the Catalyst 2950. Setup a VLAN 200 trunkport on the Catalyst 2950 (that is plugged into the SG200 VLAN200 port with the same command - switchport trunk native vlan 200) Setup the rest of the ports on the old Catalyst 2950 in the lab to be access ports on VLAN200. Is there anything that I'm missing, or do I need to tweak any of these steps, in order to properly segment the network traffic?

• How to prevent Gnome-shell's Alt+Tab from grouping windows from similar apps?

  I love pretty much everything about how Gnome Shell handles app-switching through Alt+Tab. My one gripe with it, though, is how it forces the user to use Alt+` to switch between windows of the same app. This is very annoying for me, because now I have to keep in mind if the last window I was using belonged to the same app as the current window or not. Definitely a nuisance for power users who thinks in terms of "windows I'm working with" instead of "applications I'm working on". I've tried the AlternateTab extension ( https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/15/alternatetab/ ), but it's looks way too ugly for me. Not to mention that in the end all I want is to remap Alt+(key above tab) to Alt+Tab on this application. I guess one option would be to just tweak Gnome-shell. My guess is that I should tinker with the altTab.js file at /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/, but the file is too long and overwhelming for someone like me, who doesn't know JavaScript. Does anyone know how I can make Gnome Shell stop grouping windows by applications?

  I have a server that currently uses htpasswd to authenticate users. I'm migrating to using LDAP, but my LDAP server is only for user authentication, not allowing me to add groups. I still need to use groups as they are used for access control via the Apache Directory tags in my configuration. • Linux boot - stop the kernel switching to a new framebuffer mode clearing output

  I'm working on an embedded system (based onUbuntu 12.04 LTS) and I'm customizing its kernel. I'm having some problem with upstart, mountall and plymouth. Nothing unsolvable I suppose, but the real problem is that I can't diagnose properly what's going on because the kernel (or maybe plymouth) changes the video mode in the middle of the boot process. This completely wipes entire lines of log and prevents any debugging of kernel misconfigurations. • data transfer rate anomaly (internet)

  I tested my internet speed at speedtest.net. And go the result. .42Mbps Download and .21 Upload rate. My classmate got the same download speed of .42Mbps but has .87Mbps upload rate. Does upload rate affect the transfer rate?Because even though we got the same download speed. His transfer rate is about 100kbps downloading a movie from a torrent. And mine is only about 47kbps. Also the same torrent. And even direct download its always 47kbps. Is it possible to tweak something in order to have higher transfer rates. Other details: Were also both using the same ISP. The same slow ISP. And it seems that he's getting the most out of his connection even if his plan is lower than mine. I just don't know why I'm a loser at this. And when I try to complain to the ISP. They say that I'm getting the minimum speed and its okay. That really sucks. And I'm not using any router, so is he. The computer is directly connected to the internet using the modem provided by the ISP.

• Multiple Settings for One Monitor

  I have my monitor set to the way I like it, it shows colors accurately and not overly bright (white doesn't blind me). However I edit photos for the web and this is great for my screen but I have noticed when looking at other screens my photos will at times looked washed out and not a good presentation. If I manually change my monitor settings to be brighter (and a few other tweaks) I can replicate the look of other monitors close enough to help prevent washed out/blown out photos. Here is the issue, I need to be able to change settings between the two fairly easily. To manually set my monitor for one then back to the other can be time consuming and a pain to set right every time. I would like to be able to preset certain settings (in software) that I can quickly switch between by pressing hotkeys or clicking shortcut on my desktop. I have an AMD video card and have attempted to use the AMD VISION Engine Control Center to add presets then tweak the settings for each. However when I switch between the presets the settings are the same. How do I build presets using the VISION Engine Control Center that actually works (maybe I misunderstand what it is saving?) or is there a way to do this in Windows 7 or free software that actually works decently for this purpose?

• Path Environmental Variable errors

  So, I am trying to learn java. I installed the JDK and proceeded to write a few programs. Each time, I have to give the path to javac.exe to compile the .java file. SO, I decided to tweak the %PATH% variable. And no matter what I change it to, it doesn't work. when I do an echo %PATH%, I get 'Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. • Migrating from one linux install to another: How to keep the second disk around?

  I've got a linux box running Fedora 19 that I want to move to CentOS 6.4. Rather than trying to do something fancy with the current disk (which has also accumulated a lot of sludge over the years), I'm going to get a new disk, put CentOS on that, and then move the to-be-preserved bits of stuff from the old disk to the new one. I haven't done this yet, but I presume it should be semi-straightforward -- do the CentOS install on the new disk, mount the old disk on /olddisk or somesuch, and start copying. However, I'm not sure how to handle getting the machine to recognize the new empty disk as the target of the CentOS install (I suppose I can just pull the old disk during the installation), remember that this is the intended boot disk once the install has happened), and tweak /etc/fstab (right?) to set up the old disk on the desired mount point. (Both disks are, or will be, SATA.) I could probably hack it together without losing too much hair or doing too much damage, but could anyone offer some advice that would get/keep me on the right track? Thanks!

• How can I make the Firefox Password Manager more intelligent?

  I have two major gripes about the FF password manager: If I restore a session with multiple tabs with sites with saved passwords, the master password prompt pops up once for each of them, even if I correctly enter the password the first time. Sometimes I want Firefox not to use my saved passwords at all (e.g. because I want to let someone else use it without getting access to my accounts), but hitting cancel results in erratic behavior--sometimes the box just pops up again and again, or sometimes it stops and behaves as I wish (continuing to browse w/o my passwords) until it encounters another site that wants my password. Thus even when hitting cancel does leave me free to browse passwordless, it doesn't get Firefox to leave me alone for the whole session. Thus: do you know of any tweak or add-on that could (1) make Firefox smart enough to get my master password once and then leave me alone, and/or (2) add an option (checkbox-style, toggle button, etc.) to browse "for now" (until I toggle the option) or even "for this session" (until I restart) without using any of my saved passwords? I'm running Firefox 3.5.6 on Mac OS X 10.5; thanks.

  After using my external hard drive on another Windows 7 computer to tweak photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery then upload them to Facebook I found the modified images were now not visible on the original Windows 7 computer. I'm not sure if the things I tried to get it working subsequently changed anything, but I do know this is the sequence of actions that makes the permissions of the modified files match those of the unmodified files: Right click on broken image file, select "Properties" On the "Security" tab press the "Advanced" button In the "Permissions" tab press the "Continue" button with the shield icon on it Tick the box marked "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent Click the "Remove" button to remove the only current entry "Type: Allow, Name: Administrators (XYZ\Administrators), Permission: Full control, Inherited From: OK on the "Permissions" tab. OK on the "Security" tab. Now this same procedure does not work at the folder level. It results in "access denied" dialogs. I'm looking for some way to perform this exact modification on all the images I edited on the other computer. I'm happy to use the Windows GUI in Explorer or any other included tools. I'm happy to use the Windows command line. I'd prefer not to use a third-party tool since I'd have to be satisfied it's not doing anything else. I'm not looking for a different way to change permissions to other settings to make an external drive full of photos editable on multiple computers. At least not in this question.

• Disable all the idiot-checking in Mac OS X

  I am a Windows/Linux user, who is learning Mac OS X out of interest in doing dev-work for the iPad which I recently purchased. However, OS X is driving me nuts by trying to protect all it's system files, hiding all of the important OS components I want to tweak, and generally making it impossible to do any modification to the OS in general to make it more usable. Therefore, is there a way to turn off all the idiot-checking in Finder? On XP, I can disable "Hide Protected Operating system files" and set "Show Hidden Files". On linux, there really aren't many hidden files, and changing the configuration for .files is easy enough in Gnome and XFCE. How can I set up OS X in a similar way. I am not new to computers, and I am fully aware that deleting system files can damage or even irreparably disable a OS install. Therefore, If I intentionally try to delete a file, or move something, it's probably intentional, and I am willing to accept the consequences in any case. At this point, I have fallen back to doing everything through the command line (which takes forever), because Finder is practically unusable. (As for what I am attempting to do, I also asked about GUI changes here.)
