  • What will happen if on my DB server I'll run out of space?

    I'm seeing a hugh difference of free disk space between df -h and du -sxh / I've understood in my question Resolving unix server disk space not adding up that du -sxh / is a better estimation as to when I will run out of disk space. Having said that, assuming in my case the above sentence will prove to be wrong and I will run soon out of disk space, what will happen? I assume the MySQL will fail INSERT queries, but other than that, will I just need to delete some files or will it be a problematic situation?

  • Mono vs .NET Interop curiosity

    I'm developing a huge console application for Unix using C# via Mono. If I develop that app using M Visual Studio and .NET 3.5 and I carefully neglect to use win32 specific API calls, should I expect that application to automatically work in my Unix box? Or should I just get MonoDevelop and go the Mono way?

  • Redirect C++ std::clog to syslog on Unix

    I work on Unix on a C++ program that send messages to syslog. The current code uses the syslog system call that works like printf. Now I would prefer to use a stream for that purpose instead, typically the built-in std::clog. But clog merely redirect output to stderr, not to syslog and that is useless for me as I also use stderr and stdout for other purposes. I've seen in another answer that it's quite easy to redirect it to a file using rdbuf() but I see no way to apply that method to call syslog as openlog does not return a file handler I could use to tie a stream on it. Is there another method to do that ? (looks pretty basic for unix programming) ? Edit: I'm looking for a solution that does not use external library. What @Chris is proposing could be a good start but is still a bit vague to become the accepted answer. Edit: using Boost.IOStreams is OK as my project already use Boost anyway. Linking with external library is possible but is also a concern as it's GPL code. Dependencies are also a burden as they may conflict with other components, not be available on my Linux distribution, introduce third-party bugs, etc. If this is the only solution I may consider completely avoiding streams... (a pity).

    Running RSH commands on a Windows box against a Linux box works only for the administrator user. Is there a file somewhere that has a list of users that can run commands remotely? More Info The server configuration is automated by VMware's product... There's no /etc/hosts.equiv file setup but there is a /root/.rhosts file with an entry of [IP ADDRESS] +. The SUA client C:\Windows\SUA\bin\rsh can login when run as the local administrator account but no other user can login. The error is: rcmd: unknown user: [username]. The command I'm trying to run is: rsh -l root [IP ADDRESS] ls.

    I use a VPN to connect my development machine to my school's CS dept. The development machine is Ubuntu as we do C programming in Unix. I used vpnc to do that. The school uses some DNS entries that only resolve on their DNS servers, i.e., internalserver.csdept.school.edu I am normally attached to the VPN whenever booted for convenience. However I noticed the other day that when I disconnect the VPN all my DNS queries fail. This obviously means that vpnc set up the school's DNS to be used. However I'd rather not use their DNS all the time (tracking and privacy and whatnot). Is there a way I can restore my ISP's DNS and then if the lookup fails, have it use my school's DNS?

    I am working on an export tool from Blender to Libgdx, exports like custom attributes and other information (Almost completed), this is a very cool tool that will speed up a lot your works, after I completed I will send to public to contribute forum, Export format is uses python's Standard Json module and readable text, it of course works fine, but I wanna also have a Binary Json export for faster load, so users can Export Straight to Libgdx, but after I search I found that UBJson with draft9.py (simpleubjson 0.6.1) encode is seems matches with one FBXConverter's UBJsonWriter( Xoppa wrote), but when I export, I am not able to read the file, and send this errors (Java heap space) seems this is a different between byte sizes in UBJson(python) and UBJsonReader. how can I write a correct one in python that matches with Libgdx's UBJsonReader, and would be cross-platform?   • Search files for text matching format of a Unix directory

    I am attempting to search through all the files in a directory for text matching the pattern of any arbitrary directory. The output of this I hope to use to make a list of all directories referenced in the files (this part I think I can figure out on my own). I have looked at various regex resources and made my own expression that seems to work in the browser based tool but not with grep in the command line. /\w+[(/\w+)]+ My understanding so far is the above expression will look for the beginning / of a directory then look for an indeterminate number of characters before looking for a repeating block of the same thing. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    I have a project directory that contains source code and subdirectories of source code. I want to use the Unix program find to search recursively for the names of files of certain extensions. The versions of find on Linux and Mac OS X behave differently. # Works in Linux find . -type f -regex ".*\.\(py\|html\)$" # Neither of these works in Mac OS X find . -type f -regex ".*\.\(py\|html\)$" find . -type f -regex ".*\.(py|html)$" How do I write this command so that it will run on Mac OS X (and hopefully on Linux too)?

  • Trying to mount NFS share on Windows Machien at startup with Z: letter for all users

    Windows Server 2008 We are trying to mount a specific drive letter on a windows machine from a unix machine. We need the mount to be available to the server even if no users are logged in and to users who are logged in with If we run the command from the command prompt manually it conencts and we have access to the NFS share, and can open it and see and edit files. mount -o fileaccess=777 anon \\127.0.0.1\nav z: (ip address replaced with 127.0.0.1 for security reasons) However if we try to automate the task by making an entry in the task schedule for boot time, to execute the batch script, it adds a disconencted drive to the list in 'My Computer' but it is disconencted and when trying to access the drive an error is produced: Z: is not accessible The data area passed to a system call is too small.| Tried as administrator with highest privelidges, as SYSTEM (group) and as my user (adminstator level user) same results. Is there another way to do this? Most of the help I have found online suggest this way but it keeps failing.

  • Linux/Unix MTA with the smartest queue?

    I am looking for an MTA that will allow me (a script, really) to proactively manage it's send queue in response to status codes returned by the remote servers I am delivering to. Basically, for each mail sent I would like to be able to react to the SMTP reply code returned by the remote server, ex. '250 OK', or to any error conditions like connection timeouts. Additionally, I would like to be able to manage the send queue moving forward based on this information, e.g. 'example.com has timed out the last 5 connection attempts, so no longer queue mail for recipients @example.com'. I am currently using postfix and perl to parse it's logs for this information, but I am playing a game of catchup that is prone to errors (out-of-order log entries etc.) and it's starting to get messy (some real ugly regexes ;). I really don't want to reinvent the wheel and use some language's smtp library; i would prefer to use a proven/fast/reliable MTA. I am however open to suggestions if what I need just isn't possible.     I've got a bash script that would be nicer if when I prompt the user, rather than just asking for input, if it provided a line that the user could edit (but a full text editor would be overkill, it's only one line) What tool provides this? dialog's inputbox is almost right, but I'd rather it didn't paint the whole screen.

    I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and I am a bit of a robotics enthusiast. I have used KiKS (in MATLAB for simulating Khepera robots), MobotSim (in Windows, simulates a point like robot using a BASIC editor) and Player/Stage (with C/C++ on Ubuntu 9.04). My question, can MS Robotics Studio be installed in Ubuntu Linux using Wine (I am using 1.1.31) ? Has anyone done it ? Any other way to install MS Robotics Studio in Unix (Any flavour) ?     I learned recently (on superuser) that Mac OS X uses the bash shell. I also know that OS X has a UNIX core. I was searching for information about OS X and Open Source on google, but what I found was this site: http://www.opensource.apple.com/ Which seems to include the source code for OS X. For instance, one of the links reads: Mac OS X 10.5.7 Source So, is OS X open source? There's an Apple Public Source License, but I'm bad at understanding legalese. Update Extra/Bonus question: Besides the kernel, What about the various other pieces? The X server? Window Manager? File explorer? etc. What's open source and what's not?

    Hello, I'm having a strangely difficult time setting up a subdomain (x.example.com). The main site works fine, but I get 404 errors attempting to hit x.example.com no matter how I set up the VirtualHost config.     I have a directory structure composed by: iTunes/Music/${author}/${album}/${song.mp3} I implemented a script to strip my mp3 bitrate to 128 kbps using lame (which works on a single file at time). My script looks like this 'normalize_mp3.sh': #!/bin/bash SAVEIFS=$IFS IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b") for f in *.mp3 do lame --cbr $f __out.mp3 mv __out.mp3 $f done IFS=$SAVEIFS This works fine, if I go folder by folder and execute this command. But I'd like to have a "global" command, like in 4DOS so I can run: $ cd iTunes/Music $ global normalize_mp3.sh and the global command would traverse all subdirs and execute the normalize_mp3.sh to strip all my mp3 in all subfolders. Anyone knows if there is a unix equivalent to the 4dos global command? I tried to play with find -exec but I just managed to get an headache.

  • Open source command line tools for indexing a large number of text files

    I'm looking for any open source command line tool or tools which will allow me to index and search a large number of plain text files. Approximate search would be a plus. The tool only needs to print the files that match, although some match context would be useful. A GUI tool isn't useful for my application, nor is anything that searches files one by one (grep for example). I'm basically targeting unix platforms (osx, linux, bsd). EDIT: I'm not interested in any sort of tool that is system-wide, or needs to run in the background. Basically, I want to build an index for a directory tree full of text files and then later be able to search against it. Preferably the index is one or a few files that I can specify the location of. Any ideas?

  • gnu screen - mouse does not work in nested screen session

    I started a screen session inside another screen session, both on my local machine. This is using cygwin, but I don't think it matters. I have tried via ssh to a real unix machine but the behaviour is the same. Mouse works great in the first screen session, I'm able to open vim with :set mouse=a and I can click to move the cursor or switch tabs, and the mouse wheel scrolls. But in the nested session it does not work, mouse is only useful for selecting terminal text that gets put in the clipboard, but is not able to interact with vim. I want this to work because I usually work with a local screen session, then ssh to a remote server and have a remote screen session running too (hence the nesting) and I like to scroll swiftly in vim by using the mouse wheel. Can anyone tell me why the mouse works in the first layer of screen but not in the second, nested screen session, and how I can make it work? Thanks in advance, Matthew

  • LPR Printing InputSlot Issues

    I am printing from a Unix system to a Xerox Phaser 4510 (altho I have also had issues printing to a Xerox WorkCentre 7765). I am using LPR and trying to choose the InputSlot The lpoptions show the following options: InputSlot/Paper Tray: Tray1 *Tray2 Tray3 Tray4 ManualFeed Tray6 And here is a sample command that I am using: lpr -P printer -o InputSlot=Tray1 test.pdf.ps Here is the problem: Tray1 = Gives me Tray2 Tray2 = Gives me Tray3 Tray3 = Gives me Tray4 Tray4, ManualFeed, Tray6 = Tray2 (the default tray) If I change the default tray in either LPR, the printer settings, or both. LPR still sends tray2 as the default, where as printing from a windows machine or mac, would use the new default tray. I have also tried Tray0, and several other things, but I have not found a way to get it to print on tray 1. Any Ideas?

  • How to properly set up a network bridge using bridge-utils using wlan0 as the internet "source"?

    Hey everyone this is my first post so go easy on me. I currently have a laptop with Ubuntu Studio 12.04 Beta 2 that is supplying a wireless internet connection to a windows 7 desktop computer that's connected directly to the laptop through Ethernet. I'm using the "shared to other computers" method in network manager but I believe it doesn't work with what I want to do. I would like to have the windows computer on the same subnet as every other computer in my house (192.168.1.x) so I can use LAN applications (MIDI over WiFi, Bonjour etc.) on the windows computer without having to run a massive cable to the router. I've been googling endlessly and tried multiple configurations in the /etc/network/interfaces file without success. All of them would report "cannot add wlan0 to bridge" Is there a specific way to make this work? What am I missing? Thank you
